I’m an employment lawyer – here are your rights if you get in trouble for having a hangover at work after the World Cup

BRITS across the nation will raise a glass while watching World Cup matches to either celebrate or commiserate the results. But if you have one too many and find yourself nursing a horrific hangover after the footie, your boss may not be too impressed.
Brits nursing a World Cup hangover could face getting into trouble with their bossCredit: Getty
Although some firms are forgiving of football fans getting tipsy, others aren’t so lenient when workers bend the rules.
An employment lawyer has now revealed the consequences you may face if you turn up to work looking worse for wear – and what rights you need to be aware of.
Victoria Schofield, a solicitor at Slater & Gordon, warned revellers they could get into trouble if they pull a sickie over the World Cup.
Bosses could be skeptical of your illness if you don’t make it to work the day after a big match – especially if everyone’s doing it.
READ MORE ON THE WORLD CUP
She explained that unless your sports-loving executive has granted permission for you to watch specific World Cup matches, you will be liable to face disciplinary action if you bunk off.
If you simply don’t turn up to work, you could face problems thanks to the fine print in your contract, according to Victoria.
For those fearful of suffering a sore head from the night before, you are likely to avoid dismissal if you turn up late as a one-off.
However, you could still be slapped with a verbal or written warning for your bad timekeeping.

But Brits who are simply too rough from the beer to physically work are liable to face disciplinary action.
Victoria explained: “A flexible employer might be willing to agree to special unpaid leave for employees to watch matches, or late starts/finishes the next day to accommodate the inevitable hangover.
“But a stricter employer might request doctors’ sick notes for absences taken during the course of the World Cup.
“As always, communication between employer and employee is key to a successful relationship.”
So instead of scoring an own goal, it’s best to try to come to some agreement regarding your shifts with your employer before skiving off work.
Footie fans who find their work life is clashing with key matches aren’t in the clear either.
Due to the stifling heat and three-hour time difference with Qatar, pivotal games are scheduled to be played at sporadic times.
This means a ton of Brits will miss out on watching England and other countries compete in the 2022 World Cup.
The first England match is against Iran – who are 500/1 to win the trophy, compared to the Three Lions’s odds of 8/1 – and it starts at 1pm.
A huge chunk of the UK’s 33 million-strong workforce will not be able to watch it as it kicks off during work hours.
But Victoria says if you simply don’t turn up to work, you are highly likely to be punished for it.
    GIVEN THE BOOT
She explained that many policies dictate employees must devote their whole time at work to their job – meaning if you sneak off to watch the match, you could be accused of “stealing” work time.
The solicitor said: “A reasonable employer should of course carry out a reasonable investigation into any alleged disciplinary offence and be careful to apply a proportionate sanction.
“In most cases, an employee has a right to be given adequate warning about a disciplinary hearing, especially where dismissal is a potential outcome, and to be accompanied at that hearing, and be able to put his or her case forward.”
If you are accused of misconduct, your employer must have a genuine belief that you are guilty following an internal probe.
But if you are threatened with dismissal, it has to be within the “range of reasonable responses” your boss could have taken.
This means that an employment tribunal would consider whether any reasonable employer would have sacked a worker in these circumstances.
If you have a clean disciplinary record, a tribunal is likely to find that getting the boot from your job was unfair.
Victoria said: “However, the cases are likely to be fact dependent and it is very hard to make any sweeping generalisations.”
The employment law expert instead suggests trying to come to an agreement with your employer regarding flexibility during the World Cup.
Pledging to make up for any work time lost may help your case.
But if your boss outright refuses your negotiation, Victoria explained there is not much else to do except using your holiday allowance.

Footie fans previously launched a petition calling for the nation to be given a half-day off to watch England’s first World Cup match.
Bosses at the Road to Victory arena in Manchester, Europe’s largest fanzone, want the workforce to be able to down tools to support the boys on Monday. More

Why is Hakim Ziyech playing for Morocco again at the World Cup?

NINE months since announcing his retirement from the Moroccan national side, Hakim Ziyech has made a sensational comeback by earning his place on the plane to Qatar.Ziyech returned to the fold in Morocco’s September friendlies against Chile and Paraguay.

And despite the Chelsea forward struggling for form at club level, he was an integral puzzle piece in the African nation as they had developed into a promising side looking to fulfil their potential.
Now back in the team, Ziyech will be looking to add to his 18 goal tally he has amounted so far in 43 appearances alongside his impressive wonder strike against Georgia.
Why is Hakim Ziyech playing for Morocco again at the World Cup?
Ziyech was dropped from the side due to falling out with the former manager Vahid Halilhodzic who accused him arriving late, refusing to play and setting a bad example to the young players.
Halilhodzic claimed “Ziyech’s behaviour in the last two matches, especially the last one, was not that of a national team player.

“As a leader of the team, he has to be a positive role model.
“He arrived late, and then even refused to work. There was no point in discussing it afterwards – as a coach the answer is right there to see”
As the door looked locked on international retirement for Ziyech, the Moroccan FA announced the sacking of Halilhodzic just three months before the beginning of the World Cup due to ‘differences in opinions’ about the appropriate preparation of the team.

In his place came Walid Regragui and he re-introduced Hakim Ziyech into the sides starting eleven.

JAMES MADDISON is facing a race to be 100 per cent fit for England’s opener with Iran on Monday. The Leicester midfielder missed training for a second day on Friday with a knee problem sustained against West Ham on Saturday.

Maddison trained with the 26-man squad on Wednesday but complained of soreness so was told by medics to manage the issue.
He was out on the pitch on Friday – although without boots – for a pep talk from assistant boss Steve Holland but then returned down the tunnel.
The Three Lions are acclimatising to the 33-degree weather and appeared to be feeling the sun.
Fortunately, temperatures will drop to around 26C by 4pm – the local time for kick-off for the Iran clash.

Harry Kane led the team out followed by goalkeepers Jordan Pickford, Nick Pope and Aaron Ramsdale and went through drills ran by former Manchester City and Wales ‘keeper Martyn Margetson.
But Kyle Walker, who will be absent for the Iran clash, again trained despite his groin injury.
Once again several stars including Declan Rice and Jordan Henderson wore sleeveless shirts and shorts in an attempt to keep cool under the watchful eye of assistant boss Steve Holland.
Kane and his team-mates took on board plenty of fluids shortly after training began, with the players also making use of “The Heat Shack”.

Bukayo Saka and Mason Mount are also pushing for a place but could struggle to fit into Southgate’s preferred 3-4-3 formation. More

World Cup referees use controversial England goal as example of what they must DISALLOW in Qatar 2022

KALVIN PHILLIPS has followed Peter Crouch into Fifa’s bad books – before kicking a ball at Qatar 2022.Ahead of the 2006 tournament in Germany, videos of Crouch’s aerial approach was used as an example of what should be penalised by referees, making the striker a marked man.

And now Phillips’ block to create the space for Harry Maguire’s early breakthrough in the 5-0 qualifying win over Albania last November was the example of play that officials should clamp down on in the World Cup.
Phillips moved back from an offside position to clear the way for Maguire to head home a Reece James free-kick at the backpost.
Refs’ chief Pierluigi Collina said: “That would be disallowed here. It would be interfering with an opponent from an offside position.”
The Three Lions’ Wembley romp was notable for Harry Kane’s “perfect hat-trick” in 27 minutes as they netted five times before the break.

Skipper Kane was the first England man since David Platt in 1993 to score in the same game with both feet and a header.
The Tottenham striker and Maguire seem certain starters for Monday’s World Cup opener against Iran.
But Maguire’s goal supplier James has missed Qatar through injury and Phillips isn’t yet fit enough to play.
The fifth scorer against Albania, Jordan Henderson, is only likely to make the bench.

Fifa’s singling out of a Three Lions’ goal comes as former England manager Sven Goran Eriksson advised current boss Gareth Southgate to quit – if he masterminds World Cup glory in Qatar.
The Swede believes playing the tournament in winter could help Southgate – as his players won’t be “half dead” like they are at the end of the Premier League season.
Eriksson told The Telegraph: “If England win it, my advice to Gareth Southgate is to go. It can’t get any better than that.
“It is unfair to criticise him for being too defensive because he’s done one final and one semi-final.
“It is very difficult to do much better than that.”

Man Utd star Luke Shaw explains heartwarming reason behind bizarre Coco Pops tattoo

Shaw, 25, says the image of the popular cereal-selling primate is a tribute to his two-year-old son Reign.
The goalscorer in the Euro 2020 Final told the Lions Den YouTube channel about the unique ink.
He said: “My son is obsessed with Coco Pops, he has a lot of them in the morning, I thought it would be quite cool because he is interested in my tattoos.”
The Red Devils star also has a cartoon drawing of him signing his first professional contract inked on the same arm.

Shaw has been on fine form for the Old Trafford club.
He has barely put a foot wrong since United have developed a new-found resilience in recent weeks.
It puts him in good contention for Gareth Southgate’s starting XI against Iran on Monday.
Especially with the injury of Ben Chilwell – who tore his hamstring during Chelsea’s win over Dinamo Zagreb in the Champions League – at left-back.

Argentina legend Lionel Messi ‘will room alone for first ever World Cup’ after best pal Sergio Aguero’s retirement

LIONEL MESSI will be bunking alone for the first major international tournament of his career this month.Messi routinely shacked up with good pal Sergio Aguero while away on international duty ever since their days playing for Argentina’s youth squads.

But their bromance won’t be on show at the World Cup following Aguero’s retirementCredit: AP
Messi had bunked with Aguero for all major international tournaments but will sleep alone for Qatar 2022
But Aguero’s sudden retirement from footy last year means Messi will now spend the World Cup nights in Qatar alone.
Such was the bond between Messi and Aguero that Argentina have opted NOT to give him a room with one of his team-mates.
Argentine footy expert Roy Nemer managed to a glimpse at the outside of Messi’s room at the team hotel on Thursday.
And unlike the room next to it – which is housing Nicolas Otamendi and Rodrigo De Paul and had the duo’s name on it – Messi’s placard was the only one hanging on the door.

Messi will no doubt be missing former Manchester City and Barcelona hitman Aguero in his Qatari digs.
The seven-time Ballon d’Or winner paid an emotional tribute to Aguero following his retirement – which came about after he was diagnosed with a heart condition.
He wrote on Instagram: “Practically a whole career together, Kun.
“We lived very beautiful moments and others that were not so, all of them made us unite more and be closer friends.

“Surely you will continue to be happy because you are a person who transmits happiness and those of us who love you will be with you.
“Now a new stage of your life begins and I am convinced that you are going to live it with a smile and with all the illusion that you put into everything.

Dream Team World Cup: Argentina’s star players, potential flops and bargain options

Much of the footballing world is hoping for a fitting, fairytale World Cup ending which sees Lionel Messi lifting the trophy in Qatar. And a fair few want him to go out at the group stage as well!
But which players are capable of helping the seven-time Ballon d’Or winner to inspire Argentina – on an unbeaten run of 35 games – to World Cup greatness?

TIME IS RUNNING OUT! CLICK HERE TO PLAY DREAM TEAM WORLD CUP NOW – £50,000 PRIZE POT

    STAR PLAYERS
We’ll start with the main man himself as he plots the ultimate sign-off from international football.
Messi is the joint-most expensive player in the game alongside Harry Kane and Kylian Mbappe — but surely it’s money well spent.
With Saudi Arabia, Mexico and Poland for company, Argentina are heavy favourites to win their group and their No10 will be eyeing big returns in the opening three games.
He has 90 goals and 51 assists in 164 caps and could make his 1000th professional appearance during this tournament.
A must-have? We think so…as do 32.9% of managers right now.
    Main man MessiCredit: Getty
One thing to bear in mind when selecting from La Selección is the abundance of Martinezs available – make sure you pick the right one!
Or in this case, pick two in Emi and Lautaro. The former has five keepers ahead of him that are more expensive, despite Argentina’s favourable group stage draw.
He only has three clean sheets to his name in the Premier League this season but that is no indication on his own personal Aston Villa form and he will get the nod in goals here with a far superior defence ahead of him.
While Inter Milan’s striker has an outside chance of claiming the Golden Boot award if his side go deep in the tournament.
Martinez has eight goals and six assists for Inter so far this campaign and 21 goals and seven assists in 40 caps – and will have Messi feeding him through balls.
At 25 years of age, this could easily be the tournament where he properly announces himself to the world.
    POTENTIAL FLOPS
Another Martinez now, this time Man United’s centre-back, Lisandro.
A flop, really? It’s nothing to do with him as a player, given he overcame a tough start at Old Trafford and is now considered one of the best purchases of the summer.
It’s more to do with his £4m price tag and the fact Nicolas Otamendi and Cristian Romero could be ahead of him in the pecking order to play at centre back.
    A benchwarmer?
Paulo Dybala is another who could have a bit-part role this winter having just returned from injury.
He came off the bench for the final 20 minutes in Roma’s draw with Torino and picked up a booking.
The 29-year-old lacks nothing in ability but he’ll probably be limited to substitute cameos so Dream Team World Cup bosses should stay clear.
    BARGAIN OPTIONS
At a reasonable £3.5m, Nahuel Molina has only been selected by just over 1% of all managers – that could be an oversight.
His form for Atletico Madrid hasn’t been great recently but he’s been a regular starter at right-back during a successful spell for Argentina.
    Rodrigo de PaulCredit: Reuters
It’s a similar story for club and country team-mate Rodrigo de Paul, who – at the same price as Molina – offers solid value for a midfield spot.
He’s one of those players who seems to take his game to another level on the international stage and has been a big contributor to his country’s unbeaten run.
