The two TV channels are sharing the World Cup coverage rights with both hoping to eclipse the other in terms of ratings.
And following the home nations opening matches ITV have taken first blood in this contest.
As revealed by Lizo Mzimba, BBC viewing figures for England’s 6-2 thriller against Iran saw 7.38 million people tune in according to BARB overnight figures.
This does not include viewing figures from other platforms.

However, Wales’ clash against the USA on ITV1 scored even higher viewing figures.
Mzimba said: “An average audience of 9.39m TV viewers watched yesterday’s World Cup 1 -1 draw between Wales and USA on ITV (and ITV+1) between 1900 and 2100, according to BARB overnight figures.

“This doesn’t include viewers watching on S4C or on other platforms.”
A late Gareth Bale penalty saw Wales salvage a point in their first World Cup game for 64 years after Timothy Weah opened the goalscoring for the US in the first half.

ITV will be covering the next England game when they take on the USA on Friday.
Meanwhile, BBC will be taking the coverage of Wales vs Iran before they take on both of the final games from Group B.
Both channels have already had some major talking points during their coverage.
BBC’s coverage of the World Cup’s opening game was criticised after they elected to not show the opening ceremony on BBC One.
Meanwhile, on ITV Roy Keane and Graeme Souness were involved in a heated bust-up at half-time of Saudi Arabia’s shock victory over Argentina. More

Wanda Nara gets over Argentina’s shock World Cup loss to Saudi Arabia while eating ice cream in sexy swimsuit on holiday

NEWLY single Wanda Nara has brushed aside Argentina’s shock World Cup loss to Saudi Arabia as only she can – by eating ice cream in a sexy swimsuit in the Maldives. The Argentine beauty, 35, split from footie star Mauro Icardi in September.

And she’s enjoying the single life, getting back into TV presenting work while also continuing to travel the world.
Wanda was also spotted kissing rapper L-Gante, more than a decade her junior, in a bowling alley and has posted images of the pair cosying up on social media.
But with Argentina contesting the World Cup, Wanda is instead cooling off in the Maldives, where she enjoyed an ice cream.
The model was wearing a sexy pink swimsuit as she walked the beaches, while Argentina lost 2-1 to Saudi Arabia in their World Cup group stage opener.

Argentine great Lionel Messi opened the scoring in the first half from the penalty spot.
But a second half flurry stunned Argentina, who were considered one of the favourites for the tournament.
Former partner Icardi is NOT in Qatar playing for his country, with the striker now on loan at Galatasaray from Paris Saint-Germain.
Wanda has lifted the lid on why she split from the 29-year-old, who she first met aged 18.

In an interview with magazine Vanity Fair, Wanda explained: “I didn’t expect it, Mauro had never given me reason to be jealous.
“It was bad, but then I realised that we don’t live in a Disney fairytale and that certain things can happen.
“I met Mauro when he 18 years old, he wasn’t experienced. I think that’s why. In fact, after the fact, he realised even more how much he loved me. I forgave the mistake, the problem was something else
“We have already signed the separation. Mauro didn’t want to and it was very difficult, because I still love him very much.
“But things weren’t working out, the atmosphere was bad at home and at one point I told him: ‘Let’s stop’. We made love until the end, then I went to Argentina.
“I did advertising campaigns and hosted TV shows. I was away for two months. The distance didn’t help.”
Wanda says after raising five children, she wanted to get back to her old line of work.
She continued: “The truth is that I had five children, I breastfed them all, raised them and devoted myself to them for 10 years.
“I had recently told Mauro that I wanted to go back to work, and he didn’t like it. It’s rare for a footballer’s wife to work.
“For a long time I only took care of my children and my husband, but now I want to get my time back. And I’m going back to my profession: in Argentina they keep offering me programmes to host and I really like television.
“He doesn’t like the idea that it takes attention away from the family. Whereas for me independence is fundamental: it is the path to freedom.
“So every now and then he tries to win me back, the other day he came to pick me up at the airport with a car full of flowers, then he took me out to dinner and said, ‘I’m not giving up’.

“Alright, but I know that if we get together again and in two months I mention a new job offer, we’ll be back to square one.

Inside Polish Ultras who host mass brawls & hack rivals to death with machetes ahead of Mexico clash at Qatar World Cup

FROM organising bare-chested fights in the forests to rioting in the streets with knives and bats, Poland has some of the most notorious hooligan firms of any nations competing in the World Cup. While hooliganism in the United Kingdom has largely been consigned to the dustbin of history, Polish Ultras firms have drawn comparisons with the bad old days of the 1980s in Britain.

With their first World Cup match today against Mexico, Qatari authorities will be hoping the match passes off without any trouble off the pitch.
Hooligan trouble is not expected during the game with many Ultras subject to bans – but the hoolies still carry a fearsome reputation.
Murders and brutal attacks have been associated with the firms – including one hooligan was stabbed 64 time with knives and machetes, and another who had his hand CHOPPED OFF.
Famous hoolie firms in Poland include Destroyers, Sharks, Terror Corps, Teddy Boys and Young Freaks ’98.
READ MORE ON THE WORLD CUP
Poland’s most infamous ultras firms come from Krakow, where fans of rival teams Wisla and MKS Cracovia maintain an often-violent derby.
Such is the level of hostility between the two sides, that the Krakow derby is referred to as the Holy War.
Unlike the beery hooligan stereotype in England, Polish ultras often maintain a straight-edged lifestyle with no drinking or even smoking, claiming that it makes them “weak”.
In the runup to a match between England and Poland in 1999 in the Polish capital Warsaw, seven English fans were hospitalised after fierce clashes.
    Most read in The Sun
At least two supporters were stabbed after thugs threw bottles, bricks, and metal poles at each other.
The brawl in central Warsaw’s Saski Park was reportedly prearranged, with one Polish hooligan claiming the clashes were set up by mobile phone.
Two more England fans were taken to hospital following a separate incident where thugs hurled bricks and bottles at rival supporters near a pub in the Old Town.
Running battles also took place inside the stadium itself, despite a heavy police presence.
A Polish hooligan known as “Jack” said at the time: “The Polish fans will do anything for a fight. They speak to each other on mobiles all the time. It’s all pre-arranged.
“Supporters of Legia Warsaw have been going around the last two nights looking for trouble.”
Krakow is by far the most notorious city for ultras in Poland, even earning the nickname City of Knives.
This is because the Wisla and Cracovia firms are the only ones who didn’t sign the so-called “Poznan Agreement”.
The peace treaty, signed by all other Polish firms nationwide, agrees that they won’t use weapons during fights.
In 2010, police in Lodz searched a train of Wisla supporters and recovered a terrifying haul of weapons.
They included 25 machetes, a military bayonet, three axes, four knives, and two 70cm-long wooden handles.

However, despite their fearsome reputation, Polish ultras can also have a softer side.
Krzysztof, a hooligan supporter of Slask Wroclaw, met grandmother Mariola through a class, and even though she supported rival team Ruch Chorzow, the two fell in love.
They made an unlikely couple. She was a grandma and ran her own business, he was a convicted hooligan who had served eight years in prison for robbery and football-related violence.
Their romance was even the subject of an HBO documentary, “Love Without Argument”, in 2012.
But a devastated Mariola revealed last year that they had split up after her toyboy ultra lover cheated on her with an older woman.
However, with a slightly more muted atmosphere than normal at the World Cup and a strong use of a football banning orders, no hooligan trouble is expected.
Qatar has drafted in an impressive ragtag police force made up of cops from around the world – including notorious French riot police and tough Turkish commandos.
But there have already been some crowd problems – with riot police deployed to manage a fan crush outside the Fifa Fan Festival zone in Doha.
Qatar has already faced questions over organisation of the World Cup – with reports weeks before the start that the nation simply was not ready.
Confusion over the sale of beer, infrastructure problems and reports of crowd trouble at the fanzone have already surfaced.

Saudi Arabia’s historic upset over Argentina sets cat among Dream Team World Cup pigeons

A WORLD CUP doesn’t really get going until the first major upset and Saudi Arabia delivered one of the biggest in history this morning.Herve Renard’s side came from 1-0 down to beat Argentina 2-1 amid the most feverish atmosphere in Qatar yet.
Not only has the Saudis’ spirited display shaken up the outlook of the tournament – the Albiceleste were second favourites to lift the trophy before a ball was kicked – it’s sent shock waves throughout the realm of Dream Team World Cup.
Instantly one of the biggest shocks in World Cup historyCredit: getty
Lionel Messi was the most-popular player in the game just prior to kick-off and the 38% of gaffers backing him must have thought they were in for a big double-digit haul when he opened the scoring from the penalty spot in the 10th minute.
But Argentina failed to adjust to Saudi Arabia’s high defensive line and were caught offside time and time again in the first half.
Lautaro Martinez was unlucky on one occasion as he seemed to have beaten the offside trap to double his side’s lead but VAR adjudged half his shoulder to be beyond the last defender.
At the halfway stage there was already a sense that the two-time world champions would regret their indiscipline and so it proved to be as Saleh Al-Shehri and Salem Al-Dawsari scored in the space of five minutes soon after the restart to put the underdogs 2-1 up.
This was a significant blow to the 22.7% of Dream Team World Cup bosses with Emi Martinez between the sticks – the Aston Villa goalkeeper is by far and away the most-popular asset in his position right now.
The 30-year-old incurred minus one point at the end of his first outing and will probably be among the most-transferred players this week.
Lisandro Martinez owners endured a roller coaster this morningCredit: getty
This game was also a real roller coaster for Lisandro Martinez owners.
We warned gaffers that the Manchester United centre-back was likely to make way for Cristian Romero and Nicolas Otamendi but still 17.4% of you selected him.
His backers would have been thoroughly annoyed to see him named on the bench when it looked as if an easy clean sheet was there for the taking but that emotion would have switched to relief when the Saudi goals went in.
However, there was one final twist in the tale as Martinez came off the bench to replace Romero in the 59th minute, thus incurring minus points.
Argentina piled on the pressure for the last half an hour but backers of Messi, Lautaro Martinez and Angel Di Maria were left as frustrated as the players themselves as the Saudi players defended their penalty box with unwavering dedication and intensity.
Saudi Arabia showed plenty of resilience to register an historic upset
The result turns Group B on its head and already the round of 16 predictions look in need of revision.
Dream Team World Cup gaffers will now be thinking of moving away from Emi and Lisandro Martinez with Mexico and Poland to come.
Saying that, most will expect Argentina to come out strong on Saturday and, despite the torrent of offsides, there was enough attacking promise to suggest there could be points for Lautaro Martinez and Messi on offer.
The cat is firmly among the pigeons.

We spent more than £80 on TINY cold burgers & bottled beer in Qatar hotel… even the chips were dry, says World Cup fan

WORLD CUP fans have told how they spent £80 on five bottled beers and two hilariously tiny burgers at a luxury hotel in Doha. Wales fans piled into the ritzy bar and managed to drink it dry as they endured the expensive booze and food.

The high price and questionable quality of food and drink in Qatar is becoming a major talking point for fans at the World Cup.
And one group of fans revealed their experience as 1,600 fans packed into a lavish hotel bar with just two toilets, reports news.com.au.
Booze has become even more of a precious commodity after it was banned from stadium complexes on orders of the Qatari Royals.
So fans either have to wait for it to go on sale at the one of the fanzones – with the bars opening at 6.30pm.
    READ MORE ON WORLD CUP
Or they have to hunt out the licenced hotel bars dotted around the cities which can sell alcohol to foreigners and non-Muslims.
Welsh fans endured the high prices as they watched national hero Gareth Bale thump home a penalty to net them a 1-1 draw with the US.
But one group of fans paid £79 for five bottles of beer – or around £16 a bottle.
It did come with some food, but they ended up with some unappetising looking cold “mini-burgers” and a small portion of dry wedges.
    Most read in Football
“It is what it is really,” said Wales fan Ieuan.
“We’d rather pay this than walk around struggling to find somewhere to have a drink.
“We’re staying on a cruise ship where the drinks are about the same price, so it’s just nice to get off that today.”
Fans queued up from 1.30pm to get inside the bar before the Wales game kicked off at 10pm.
The tiny burgers are the latest piece of scran to cause a stir at the World Cup.
Fans were left baffled by a £9 “Greek” salad being served in a fanzone – which looked like a bag of supermarket salad with one olive.
And they were stunned by the breakfast allegedly being served at the near £200-a-night ten accommodation.
It was a hodgepodge of items that was compared to a child’s packed lunch from a school trip.
Qatar has already faced questions over organisation of the World Cup – with reports weeks before the start that the nation simply was not ready.
