And Messi, 35, is buzzing that his eldest, ten-year-old Thiago, is now old enough to appreciate his dad’s magic.
After his stunning opener set the South Americans on their way in front of wife Antonela and their sons, he said: “From the beginning to the final whistle I was thinking about my family.
“My children especially, as they are growing older and understand more.
“We have had families before at World Cups – Thiago has been there but wasn’t aware what it meant.

“I now see how they suffer and enjoy it. It’s something spectacular.
“They are excited as all Argentinians – it’s amazing to share this with them.”
Messi put La Albiceleste ahead 35 minutes in with a beautiful low shot before Julian Alvarez doubled their lead following Australia keeper Mat Ryan’s clanger.
Enzo Fernandez’s own goal gave the Aussies a chance but Argentina are now three wins away from their first World Cup title since 1986.

They face the Netherlands in the quarters on Friday, where they will once again be backed by their incredible support.
The fanatical fans serenaded their heroes for ten minutes after the final whistle – and Messi believes they can make the difference.
He said: “It’s unbelievable what they transmit – the passion, energy and joy.
“It’s unbelievable. There is a bond we have, a union – it’s beautiful. That’s what the national team should be. These are amazing feelings.”
The Aussies leave with head held high after pushing Argentina all the way in their first last-16 game since 2006.

Coach Graham Arnold said: “I said to the boys that I could not be more proud.
“Everyone said we were the worst Socceroo team to qualify for the World Cup. That’s gone now. We are the only Australian side to win two World Cup games in a row.

“It’s all been about making the nation proud, and I’m pretty sure we did that.”

Wayne Rooney names his England XI to start vs Senegal warns stars not to fall into same traps he and former players did

WAYNE ROONEY has named what his starting XI would be for England against Senegal – as he warns the team about knockout football pitfalls. The Three Lions play the African side for the first time ever later today, with the winner taking a place in the World Cup quarter-finals.

Rooney would stick to the side that beat Wales for today’s game
Gareth Southgate has a selection headache after multiple players put themselves in the frame with an impressive second-half showing against Wales.
And Rooney believes Southgate should keep faith with that side as he reserved special praise for Manchester pair Marcus Rashford and Phil Foden.
He said in his Sunday Times column: “I would stick with the side that beat Wales and keep Rashford and Foden in.
“Foden gives you better control and helps you play a lot more and you could see Rashford’s confidence grow after his goals against the Welsh. Confidence is the key with him.”

On Harry Kane’s lack of goals, Rooney insisted there was nothing for fans to be worried about.
He said: “Harry Kane is made for these games. The games that are tighter, where the pressure is higher, where the football has to be more calculated – they are where Harry steps up.

“He hasn’t scored in the tournament yet but I think there will be a shift in his mindset. He’ll think, “right, it’s on me now to make sure we progress”, and I think this is when he’ll come alive.'”
Rooney, who is currently boss at MLS side DC United, has plenty of tournament experience from his England days but has warned the current crop about falling into the same traps his era did.

The Golden Generation famously underperformed at most World Cups and Euros.
The former United striker played all the way up until the humiliating defeat to Iceland in 2016, a game he pinpointed in his column as England responding badly to setbacks..
He added: “I played in five knockout matches for England and we only won one – against Ecuador at the 2006 World Cup.
“Our exit against Iceland at Euro 2016 was the biggest example of what can go wrong. Negative thoughts going into the match were not a problem that time – I never thought we would lose.
“The issue was how we reacted to setbacks during the game. When we went 2-1 down after 18 minutes we didn’t recover and with about 30 minutes to go we panicked, changed how we played, gambled too early and lost our discipline and shape.
“Once you do that against a team that’s stubborn and hard to beat, like Iceland were, there is no way you are going to get back in it.” More

    France 1-0 Poland
    50. Poland need to try and find a way to get Lewandowski into the game more.
France will try and make it difficult for that to happen.
The Barcelona striker is having to get all around the pitch looking for the ball, not in areas where he can hurt France.

    France 1-0 Poland
    48. Griezmann takes the free kick from a wide position.
He goes for goal but Szczesny is equal to it.
Varane nearly got an awkward touch to that.
France 1-0 Poland – Bereszynski yellow card
    46. More of the same is required of Poland in this half.
They will be hoping to create the number of chances they did in the first half.
Bereszynski is given a yellow card for a foul on Dembele.
    Kick-off: France 1-0 Poland
Poland get the second half started.
They have it all to do.
    Big 45 minutes ahead.
Inside the ground – half time analysis
SunSport’s Mark Irwin reports from Qatar:
Well we’ve just seen history being made by Olivier Giroud netting his 52nd international goal to become France’s all-time record scorer.
The veteran striker took Kylian Mbappe’s through ball on the turn to beat his former Arsenal team-mate Wojcicech Szczesny and to put the world champions on course for a potential quarter-final clash with England.
As we expected, Mbappe and Ousmane Dembele have been running riot down the wings but it hasn’t all been one-way traffic.
Piotr Zielinski had a glorious opportunity to fire Poland into a 38th minute lead, but Hugo Lloris marked his own piece of French history with a terrific point-blank save before Raphael Varane cleared the follow up off the line.
Lloris is winning his 142nd cap tonight, another French national record, but there’s still plenty of work to be done before he can be certain of extending that appearance record here in Qatar.
    HT: France 1-0 Poland
The tables have turned for Poland now.
No time to try and massage your goal difference in the knockout rounds of the World Cup.
Czesław Michniewicz has to rethink his tactics now as they need to find a way back into this game.
The positive for Poland is that they have created more chances in that first half than they have in the rest of the tournament.
Sadly, their chances so far have fallen to everyone bar Lewandowski.
    Credit: Reuters
    HT: France 1-0 Poland
France lead at half time at the Al Bayt Stadium.
They have shown some defensive weakness in that first half but a moment of magic from Mbappe and Giroud separates the teams.

    HT: France 1-0 Poland
The referee brings the half to a close.
We have witnessed a piece of history here.
Olivier Giroud is France’s record goalscorer.
France 1-0 Poland – Kaminski chance
45+1. As the cross comes in, it falls at the feet of Kaminski.
He gets a shot away which deflects and misses the post by inches.
    Lloris was scrambling there.
    France 1-0 Poland
    45. Mbappe plays a neat pass through to Giroud.
He knows where the goal is as he spins and shoots.
The ball nestling into the bottom corner, clinical.
We are going to have two minutes added.
    Goal – Olivier Giroud (France)
    France 0-0 Poland
    43. Kounde holds up play as he has to take his gold chains off.
Fortunately he is not like Mr T or we could have been here all day.
Added time has been quite a player in this tournament already.
    France 0-0 Poland
    41. Well Poland certainly gave France a scare there.
It should give the Poles some confidence to attack Les Bleus.
They are not made of stone and do look nervy when under pressure at the back.
    Credit: AP
France 0-0 Poland – Zielinski chance
    39. What a chance for Poland.
The ball is cut back from the byline and Zielinski meets it on the penalty spot and puts his foot through it.
    Lloris makes a great save.
The ball allows a second effort for Poland but Varane clears the ball from behind his keeper.
    France 0-0 Poland
    37. Corner comes in from France but Poland cannot clear the ball completely.
It drops to Giroud with his back to goal, so obviously he tries an overhead kick.
The ball loops up for Szczesny to gather but he is taken out by Dembele.
    France 0-0 Poland
    35. This is the best phase of play I have seen in this World Cup from Poland as they spend some time in French territory.
Aston Villa’s Matty Cash meets the ball on the edge of the box but his effort goes well wide.
    Positive stuff from Poland.
    France 0-0 Poland
    33. Poland have a free kick after a foul by Tchouaméni which also results in a yellow card.
    Lewandowski stands over the ball.
His effort is driven straight into the wall, terrible effort.
    France 0-0 Poland
    31. Poland have no doubt achieved their first goal.
30 minutes and no goals conceded.
Side note, pretty sure I have seen my last three Wi-Fi passwords on the back of the Polish tops.
    Credit: Getty
    France 0-0 Poland
    29. The empty seats seem to be full now.
Dembele is fed into space in the box and all he has to do is find Giroud on the back post.
The Barcelona man puts too much pace on his ball and Giroud cannot convert.
    France 0-0 Poland
    27. France clear the ball and manage to find Mbappe.
The speed when he gets going is just insane.
It is like the Polish defenders are wading in quick sand.
    France 0-0 Poland
    25. Poland are starting to get forward more.
They have looked negative in the tournament to date.
Maybe they were waiting for the knockout rounds to impress.
    France 0-0 Poland
    23. It seems it is Kounde’s turn to test Szczesny.
All too easy for the Juventus keeper.
Not sure if they are looking to test the Polish shot-stopper or simply cannot get closer to the goal.
    Credit: Reuters
    France 0-0 Poland
    21. Midfield could be an area where this game is won today.
Poland are dropping so deep when France have the ball that their centre midfielders have all the time in the world.
The Poles counter attack and the ball finds its way to Lewandowski who shoots from distance with Lloris at full stretch.
Not too far wide that one.
    France 0-0 Poland
    19. From what we have seen from Poland so far, their best bet of getting a result today is to take this to penalties.
They struggle to connect play in the final third yet again.
Poland just look disjointed when they are doing anything but defending.
    France 0-0 Poland
    17. Rabiot is penalised for a foul on Krychowiak.
Poland gift away possession again and France attack.
Dembele cuts inside and looks to shoot but does not connect well enough to test Szczesny.

When was Cristiano Ronaldo’s first World Cup?

CRISTIANO RONALDO is considered one of the best footballers in the world, having won several titles and six Ballon D’Or awards. The Portuguese captain expects the 2022 World Cup in Qatar to be the last of his long career – we take a look back at Ronaldo’s first-ever World Cup.

When was Cristiano Ronaldo’s first World Cup?
Cristiano Ronaldo was just 21 years old when on June 11, 2006, in Germany, he made his debut in what is considered the biggest football tournament in the world.
Portuguese legend Luis Figo was leading the team as they entered the group stage having to face Angola, Iran and Mexico.
Cristiano Ronaldo was wearing the number 17 at that time and already had eyes on him from his breakthrough in the Premier League with Manchester United.
Referee Jorge Larrionda from Uruguay kicked off the match and Ronaldo suffered a yellow card on his debut in the 26th minute.

After an hour of game time, Luiz Felipe Scolari decided to take him off and bring Costinha in.
Not the best start for Ronaldo, however, the best was yet to come.
Did Ronaldo score in his first World Cup?
Up next was Iran and Ronaldo made history by becoming the youngest Portuguese player to ever score in a World Cup at 21 years and 132 days.
In the 80th minute, he converted a penalty into a goal to extend Portugal’s lead to 2-0 and earn them another three points in Group D.

Ronaldo didn’t play the final group match against Mexico, as Portugal topped the group with three wins.
Portugal beat the Netherlands to make it to the quarter-finals and face England.
The match finished in a 0-0 draw at 90 minutes and went all the way to penalties.
Ronaldo secured his country a place in the 2006 World Cup semi-finals as he scored the winning penalty and sent the English home.
Portugal would go on to finish fourth that year, as they lost out to finalists France and then to Germany in the game for third place.
How many World Cup’s has Cristiano Ronaldo played in?
Ronaldo represented his country five times in the World Cup.
By 2010, he had inherited the number seven jersey and the captaincy moved forward to him from Figo.
He was Portugal’s best player, having won a Ballon D’Or, a Champions League title and made a move to La Liga club Real Madrid.
In Brazil four years later, Ronaldo didn’t have the best World Cup because of an injury he picked up before the tournament.
Despite his late winning goal against Ghana in the final group match, they still hadn’t earned enough points to progress and went home early.
Then came the 2018 World Cup in Russia.
At the time, Portugal were European Champions, having beaten France on their own turf in the EUROs final in 2016.
In the first match against Spain, Ronaldo became the oldest player to score a hat-trick in World Cup history.

On November 11, 2022, Ronaldo broke the records again after he became the first-ever player to score a goal in five consecutive World Cups.

We flew an England flag from highest statue in Senegal ahead of Three Lions clash – as footie fans admit ‘we fear Foden’

The bronze statue, which was completed in 2010, marks 50 years of independence from France.
It was commissioned by Senegal’s then president Abdoulaye Wade and depicts an idealised African family.
The stunt comes after Senegalese footy fans yesterday said that while they were confident in their own Lions stars, they feared England’s young Three Lions, particularly Marcus Rashford.
Trainer Ernest, 34, said: “We fear Marcus Rashford, Harry Kane and Phil Foden.

Fans are set to gather hours before the match starts to secure good spots to watch the last 16 grudge match.

I’m England’s most loyal fan… I’ve watched 377 games and been to 8 World Cups – it’s cost me more than a HOUSE

DURING his 34-year odyssey to witness England lift the World Cup, Brian Wright has loyally followed the team over land and sea to 377 games. From the Amazon Jungle to the deserts of Arabia, he’s fled marauding ultras, wrestled a sumo, swam with sharks and caught deadly piranha fish during his England adventures.

Brian with celeb footie fans, Alan Davies, Frank Skinner and David Baddiel
Now – in a pirate’s hat and clutching his replica World Cup – Brian stares out over HMS Wag from his luxury cruise ship moored in the warm Gulf waters at its bow.
“What a life,” says Three Lions-crazy Brian. “I’m out here in Qatar with some of my best friends in the world watching my country at the World Cup.
“If England win it, it will complete my journey.”
The superfan’s Three Lions obsession has cost him over £140,000 – and, he says, contributed to the breakdown of two marriages.

The dad-of-two joked: “This is the first World Cup that I’m going as a single man. I’ve come back from a couple single!”
From the luxury MSC Poesia – where Brian is sharing a cabin with fellow England fan Kevin Booth – he has been waving towards the England wives and girlfriends’ ship the MSC World Europa.
He said of his neighbours – who moved from the £1bn ship to luxury hotels and villas this week: “It was nice having the Wags next door.

“I was sending subliminal messages saying ‘Foden must start’.”
    Most read in Football
Since he began following the team in 1988, Brian has notched up more England games than Bobby Charlton, Gary Lineker, Wayne Rooney and Harry Kane have in combined caps.
It hasn’t come cheap. Brian added: “£140,000 sounds like a lot of money. You could buy a house or a decent car with that.
“But I don’t think about the cash, it’s about life experiences and the friendships I’ve made. You can’t put a price on that.”
The Coventry City fan, 53, has watched England home and away at 16 tournaments and eight World Cups.
He’s rarely missed an England game in three decades with exceptions made for funerals, a wedding and when Covid restrictions applied.
Brian, whose home in Rugby, Warwickshire, is rammed with Three Lions memorabilia,  revealed: “I see going to watch England as my calling.
“Wembley is my church and following England across the world has been a privilege. It’s a passion which may even be an obsession.”
Along the way, he’s met England luminaries Sir Geoff Hurst, Gareth Southgate, Harry Kane and It’s Coming Home co-song writers David Baddiel and Frank Skinner.
Coventry-born Brian revealed: “It was my dad Brian senior who gave me my love of football.
“He was a Leicester fan who passed away five weeks before they won the Premier League title in 2016.
“I put a league table in the coffin with him and a copy of the Sporting Life as he liked a bet.”
    MANE MAN
Brian’s first tournament was Euro 88 held in West Germany when football was still tainted by rampant hooliganism.
England lost all three games and went home after the group stage – but Brian had fallen in love with the “camaraderie” and was hooked.
The dad remembered: “It was special. Fans singing and drinking in a group, I loved that feeling of togetherness.”
Yet the so-called English Disease of hooliganism was still rife in 1988 with 381 Three Lions fans arrested during the tournament.
Brian added: “There were scraps going on all over the place. I didn’t want to see that and definitely didn’t want to be involved in it.
“It made me feel sick and ashamed to see fans being sent home bloodied and bruised.
“Now England fans have a reputation where people want us to be in tournaments. We spend money and have a good time.
“I want us to be ambassadors when we travel abroad. We represent our country.”
Since then he’s followed England to footballing outposts including Lichtenstein, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Moldova and North Macedonia.
At the 2002 Japan World Cup Brian ended up taking on a sumo wrestler after England had beaten Argentina following a David Beckham penalty.
The one-time football referee explained: “We were partying after the game in a park and came across a 25st sumo wearing only what looked like a nappy.
“Fans were taking it in turns to fight him. I couldn’t even get my arms around him and he picked me up and threw me in a fountain. It was good natured and we were all laughing.”
Even when the football was dire Brian made sure he lapped up
At the South African World Cup in 2010 he stayed in a safari lodge and was immersed in the sea in a cage to swim with great white sharks.
“All I could hear in my head was the ‘de da, de da’ theme tune from the Jaws film,” he remembers. “I was terrified but loved it.”
During the Brazil World Cup in 2014 he fished for piranhas in the Amazon, saying: “We used bamboo sticks, a bit of string and a slice of raw meat.
“I caught one and still have the teeth. We had hammocks beside the river and had a piranha barbecue. It tasted like chicken.”
The football wasn’t quite as enjoyable.
    STRAIN ON HIS MARRIAGE
Brian – whose favourite England player is Paul Gascoigne – explained: “In Brazil we didn’t get out of the group – we were out in six days, my malaria tablets lasted longer.
“But I still had a great time. It’s not just the 90 minutes, it’s the build up, everyone meeting up, having a sing song, having a drink, enjoying life.”
Brian married Dolores, now 54, and had daughters Alex, 25, and Stella, 22.
But his England trips were putting a strain on the marriage.
When he returned from Euro 2004 in Portugal he says his belongings – including England memorabilia – had been dumped in a skip. The pair divorced.
Later Brian proposed to new girlfriend Lisa at World Snooker Championships at the Crucible Theatre, Sheffield in 2012 before marrying her in 2019.
In 2016 he took Lisa to Marseille in the south of France to watch England take on Russia in the European Championship in what he imagined would be a romantic break.
The Three Lions obsessive said: “We were having a nice meal and a glass of wine and all of a sudden we heard glass smashing, tables flying and saw people running.
“The owner of the little cafe said, ‘Come in’ and pulled the shutters down. You could see it all kicking off.
“Russian ultras were smashing into the England fans, who tried to defend themselves but the ultras were all tooled up.
“We went back to our hotel balcony and it was like overlooking a triage. Blood was splattered everywhere.
“England fans have moved on violence decades ago but other nations haven’t.”
He’s currently going through a divorce from Lisa, 45, saying: “She never actually said, ‘It’s me or England’. She just said, ‘You can’t have your cake and eat it’.”
“I’ve had ups and downs in my life but England have always been there for me. It’s what I do.”
Brian – whose new business venture Sporting Legend Events arranges for fans to meet their heroes – says his best game was England’s 5-1 crushing of Germany in 2001.
His worst ever game following the Three Lions was the mortifying defeat to footballing minnows in the 2016 Euros.
The revealed: “I’ve seen many crushing defeats but that was dire. It was so depressing, it even made me question why I was going to games.
“I questioned myself if I could carry on. I’m glad I did. We’ve started to be good.”
This year Brian was invited to St George’s Park – the FA’s national football centre – to meet Gareth Southgate and the players.
“I had a good chat with Gareth,” Brian said. “I thanked him for getting to the 2020 Euros final when the country was going through coronavirus.
“I said that if we win the World Cup I’ll stay on MSC Poesia and go on a world cruise.
“He replied: ‘Keep a space for me, I’ll be coming on it with you.’
“I thanked Kane for his Round of 16 goal against Germany at the 2020 Euros. There were absolute limbs everywhere.
“He said: ‘You’re more than welcome. I hope to give you all that feeling in Qatar’.”

So will Brian end his obsessive globetrotting if England finally lift the World Cup for the first time since 1966?
With a wry smile, he added: “Absolutely not. I’d like to see us defend it.”

Watch Argentina stars go wild in their PANTS in dressing room as Lionel Messi inspires narrow Australia World Cup win

ARGENTINA stars went wild in just their pants as they celebrated victory over Australia in the World Cup. After scoring in his 1000th professional game, Lionel Messi ran the show as he helped his side get over the line to spark the amazing dressing room scenes.

The South American side are now through to the quarter-finals as they look to claim the Jules Rimet trophy for the first time since 1986 in what will be Messi’s last World Cup.
After an unconvincing start to the group stages, Argentina now look in the groove.
And the players are certainly enjoying the journey as they went crazy in the changing room following the win.
Video footage from SportsCenter shows the players singing, chanting and dancing alongside their coaches after the match.

With several players wearing just their underwear, they bounced in unison as they chanted together.
One coach blew a whistle repeatedly while some players banged on tables and other launched clothes and water up into the air.
The happy Argentine stars then form a smaller huddle and get even louder.
And at one point, a player can even be seen giving a coach a piggybank ride amid the chaotic scenes.

The video appears to sum up the mood in their camp as Argentina go from strength to strength.
While Australia offered brilliance resistance in the first-half, Lionel Scaloni’s side found the breakthrough thanks to magic from one man.

Messi picked up the ball from inside the penalty area to slip the ball into the far corner on his milestone match.
A shocking clanger from Aussie keeper Mathew Ryan allowed Julian Alvarez to double the Argentina advantage before the hour mark.
