Cristiano Ronaldo spotted walking down the tunnel as Portugal team-mates stay on pitch to celebrate famous World Cup win

CRISTIANO RONALDO left his team-mates celebrating on the pitch as he walked down the tunnel at the end of Portugal’s win over Switzerland.Portugal won 6-1 in the last-16 clash to set up a tie with Morocco.

Ronaldo was dropped by manager Fernando Santos after throwing a strop following his substitution against South Korea.
Santos was not happy with his captain’s behaviour and left him on the bench, instead handing a first ever international start to Goncalo Ramos.
The switch paid off as Ramos scored a hat-trick as Ronaldo watched on from the dugout.
The superstar was brought on with 17 minutes left with his side already 5-1 up.

He managed to put the ball in the back of the net, but he was yards offside and the goal was disallowed.
But he did not stay on the pitch for long after full-time and was the first Portugal player down the tunnel.
Ronaldo did applaud Portugal fans quickly before heading to the dressing room, while his team-mates stayed on the pitch to soak up the adoration.
After the game Santos denied he dropped Ronaldo because he had an issue with the former Manchester United star.

Santos said: “Cristiano and Ramos are different players.
“There is no problem with the captain of the  team.
“I have known Cristiano since he was 19. We have a strong relationship.
“Ronaldo and I never confuse the human and personal aspect with being manager and player.
“Cristiano set the example of a captain.”
Ramos was asked about the atmosphere in the dressing room after Santos’ big call and whether Ronaldo had said anything to him.
The young striker replied: “Honestly, in our team, no-one talked about it.

“Cristiano, as our captain, did what he always does.
”He helped us, he encouraged us, not only me but also my team-mates.
“Never in my wildest dreams did I think of being part of the starting 11 in the knockout stages.
“Cristiano Ronaldo was one of my role models, along with Lewandowski and Ibrahimovic.
“He’s a captain, the leader, and we always look forward to playing side by side with him.”
Portugal midfielder Otavio added: “We are 26 players. Everyone’s important and it was no surprise  Goncalo  did the job.
“But we know what Cristiano’s value is — he’s a star, the best in the world. He also helped us from the bench.”

Veteran defender Pepe, who headed  the second goal after Ramos’ brilliant finish opened the scoring, said  “Ronaldo knows perfectly well  the  important thing is the ‘We’.
“The coach’s choice  must be respected.”
Before the match, Santos insisted Ronaldo’s omission was not linked to his dissent after being subbed in the group-stage defeat by South Korea.
Santos said: “It has nothing to do with it.
“It is a strategic issue that was already being prepared for this game.”
But despite Portugal’s amazing display without Ronaldo, the crowd started chanting his name on the hour.
The biggest roars of the night were heard when he came on with 17 minutes to go and when he put the ball in the net — only to be ruled well offside.
Ronaldo disappeared down the tunnel while his team celebrated with the Portugal fans.

‘I’m the dog of war’ – England star Jude Bellingham fires France warning ahead of World Cup quarter-final showdown

JUDE BELLINGHAM warned England’s World Cup rivals: I’m the dog of war!The teenage sensation is ready to show France his bite is worse than his bark when the Three Lions unleash him in Saturday’s quarter-final.

Bellingham, 19, is now the most wanted midfielder on the planet after his superb displays in Qatar — with French giants Paris Saint-Germain last night declaring their interest.
And Borussia Dortmund star Bellingham said: “I go into games knowing every one is a war and you’ve got to be up for it.
“When you’ve got the dog, you’re just born with it. The way I was raised in football, you had to have that dog in you.
“That’s something I have. Off the pitch I’m a nice guy but, on it, something takes over me.

“I feel like you’ve got no friends out there except those wearing the same kit.
“Anyone not wearing that — it’s no beef — but there is something that’s personal.”
Prem top dogs Liverpool and Manchester City, plus Real Madrid, are already tracking Bellingham.
But PSG president Nasser Al-Khelaifi says they will join the race for the ex-Birmingham whizkid.

Al-Khelaifi said: “Everyone wants him, I’m not going to hide it. I respect him and his club. If we want to talk to him, we’ll talk to the club.
“He’s amazing, what a player. England are lucky to have him. He is one of the best players of the tournament.
“It is his first World Cup and he is calm, relaxed and confident.”
Bellingham scored the first in the 6-2 win over Iran then set up Jordan Henderson in the last-16 triumph over Senegal.
After Henderson’s opener on Sunday, Bellingham collared the Liverpool captain in an “iconic” head-to-head celebration.
Jude Bellingham was a key figure against Senegal
Bellingham said: “That was completely off the cuff. We’re spending a lot of time with each other but it’s turned into something iconic.
“Hopefully people will remember it for a long time.
“He’s always the loudest on the pitch, which I love. You know you’re in a game. He doesn’t let you switch off for one second.
“The best thing is he will give you detail to help you, maybe after you’ve done something negative, but he’s also first to let you know if you’ve done something positive.
“Against Senegal he was incredible. Ran the game, scored a key goal. He was a pleasure to play with.”
England keeper Jordan Pickford, 28, says he and Henderson, 32, bark out orders because they came through Sunderland’s academy with Kevin Ball.
Pickford told the Lions’ Den: “You’ve got Bally, our youth-team manager, to blame for that.
“He got us here today. It’s where we’re bred — up north, different breed.”
Pickford is set to earn his 50th cap against the defending champions.

England’s secret weapon vs France is mastermind who shut down Messi in 2012 – now he’s turning attention to Mbappe

A DECADE ago, Steve Holland was hatching a masterplan to snuff out the threat of Lionel Messi in a Champions League semi-final and it worked a treat.Ten years on, Gareth Southgate’s trusted No 2 is working out a scheme to combat Kylian Mbappe in Saturday night’s World Cup quarter-final.

Gareth Southgate’s No2 Steve Holland has been there and done it all with ChelseaCredit: Richard Pelham / The Sun
Mbappe has been the great individual talent at this World Cup — a ‘devastating’ player with ‘super strengths’ which England must stifle if they are to progress to the semis.
But England are the tournament’s top scorers with 12 goals – level with Portugal after their 6-1 mauling of Switzerland – and arguably, the best team in Qatar so far.
So, while former Chelsea No 2 Holland admits he and Southgate will change tactics specifically to counter Mbappe’s pace, skill and finishing ability, he insists England cannot retreat into their shells.
The Mbappe conundrum reminds Holland of that 2012 semi-final when Messi failed to score over two legs and the Blues progressed courtesy of a 1-0 home win and a 2-2 draw in the Nou Camp, when John Terry was sent off and the great Argentinian missed a penalty.
    READ MORE ON WORLD CUP
Holland said: “In 2012, with the Champions League semi-final between Barcelona and Chelsea, there are a handful of players on the planet that you need to consider special attention to.
“Messi has been one and probably still is. You’d have to put Mbappe in that category.
“We do need to look at trying to avoid leaving ourselves in situations where he is as devastating, as we’ve all seen.
“I remember a conversation with Jose Mourinho about it when he was with Real Madrid, they were playing Barcelona and had Cristiano Ronaldo.

“Dani Alves would be the right-back for Barcelona and flying forward in attack, Jose would play a ‘soldier’ against him to try to stop him but then you don’t get any threat from your team from the soldier as you’re just stopping somebody, not actually hurting them.
“Then he would try to play Ronaldo against him, one against one, because Alves was fantastic going forwards but maybe not as good defensively.”
Chelsea had Ashley Cole, one of the best left-backs in the world, directly up against Messi on those nights in 2012.
But it was Brazilian midfielder Ramires who shut down the space in front of Cole to deny Messi the room to drift in field as Alves strode forward from right-back.
Chelsea played a midfield five that night and needed brilliant communication to stop any spaces between them that Messi would drift into.
Holland added: “It’s that cat and mouse of ‘yes, we have still got to try to deal with him’ but we also have to try to exploit weaknesses.
“I’d like to think we won’t just be looking to stop a player but would be looking to do everything possible to limit his super strength whilst still trying to focus on our strengths.
“Because we have good players, as likely to cause France trouble as Mbappe would to us.”
    THE CHELSEA WAY
Holland was working under Roberto Di Matteo back in 2012 and also assisted Andre Villas-Boas, Rafa Benitez, Mourinho, Guus Hiddink and Antonio Conte at Stamford Bridge.
His wealth of experience makes him a perfect sounding board for Southgate — with whom he has worked since 2013, initially with England’s Under-21s.
While Holland is happy to discuss the options, he will not reveal England’s anti-Mbappe plan.
With the Paris Saint-Germain superstar wreaking havoc down the left, it might seem obvious for Southgate and Holland to switch to a back five — with the pacey Kyle Walker on the right of the central three and Kieran Trippier at right wing-back.
But there is a feeling England have become emboldened enough about their own strengths to stick with a back four, with Walker continuing at right-back and Jordan Henderson having added defensive responsibilities.
That has much to do with the emergence of Jude Bellingham and the belief that England have their midfield balance right with the Borussia Dortmund teenager in front of Henderson and Declan Rice.
Henderson’s experience and ability to read the game will be key in getting numbers around Mbappe and stop him being isolated against Walker as often as possible.
    BELL TOLLS FOR FRANCE
On 19-year-old Bellingham, Holland said: “He’s unique. When you’re categorising really top players there are physical attributes, technical attributes and we’ve talked about Messi and those techniques that make you special.
“My experience is that what makes the top, top ones is the mentality . . . the self-belief, confidence, drive and ambition to push every day.
“There were a few at Chelsea I felt were always there every time in training — Ashley Cole, Frank Lampard, Didier Drogba, John Terry — players that weren’t super-gifted physically or technically but the mental aspect took them to a different level.
“Jude has those mental attributes and there has been an evolution physically in the last 12 months.
“His impact in this tournament, for a player of 19, is already hugely unusual.
“I’m always balanced, as Gareth is, with the amount of praise you give because we’ve seen so many where so much goes wrong because they believe in their publicity.
“I don’t think that will happen with Jude. His potential is through the roof.
“Provided he keeps working, he has an incredible career at the absolute highest level.
“There’s only three things you can do in football. Stop goals, make goals, score goals. Jude can do all of those things.
“Recently, he’s begun to score, which makes the biggest players big-matchwinning ability.”
    SOUTH OF HEAVEN
Holland is adamant he is not ‘the bad cop’ to Southgate’s good cop, although some England players might disagree, but he is an outstanding tactician.
So what about the perception of over-caution under Southgate?
Especially if England switch to a back five, as they did against Germany and Italy at last year’s Euros.
Holland said: “The perception has been that the five is more negative than the four, which I don’t completely agree with.
“Against Germany at the Euros, they played 3-4-3 and we felt if we matched them individually all over the pitch that we could be superior — so it was a good way to win.
    Read More on The Sun
“The final against Italy, we had a choice. They had a way of playing where they get five players high in attack. If you’ve got four at the back, you get overloaded and that can cause a tactical problem.
“But no two tournaments are the same. We have a group that are 18 months further from the Euros — and one or two of our younger forwards have definitely evolved.” More

Eagle-eyed fans work out why Bernardo Silva did NOT celebrate with Portugal pals in World Cup thumping of Switzerland

BERNARDO SILVA did not join in with Portugal celebrations as he feared conceding a goal.Goncalo Ramos fired Portugal in front in their World Cup last-16 clash against Switzerland with a cracking strike.
Bernardo Silva had initially been involved in the celebrations
Bernardo Silva then waited on the pitch as his team-mates celebrated Portugal’s first goal
But Silva waited on the pitch to congratulate the striker while the rest of his team-mates celebrated near the stands.
And quick-thinking fans have pointed out the Manchester City star did so because he wanted to avoid conceding a goal.
It has been suggested that under Fifa laws, play can resume after a goal once all members of the scoring team are no longer in the opposition half.
And the claim is that if players are not on the field of play, that counts as them not being in the opposite half.
READ MORE ON THE WORLD CUP
The same fan theory was circulated in the 2018 World Cup, when Kieran Trippier was the only outfield England player who failed to join in the team celebrations after Harry Kane’s late winner against Tunisia.
However, Law 8 states that for play to restart “all players, except the player taking the kick-off, must be in their own half of the field of play.”
That means Silva could have joined in with the celebrations without fearing a Switzerland restart.
But the 28-year-old still won plaudits from viewers who were impressed by his presence of mind.

Fortunately for Silva he did not miss out on the celebrations for long as Portugal hit six past Switzerland to set-up a quarter-final tie with Morocco.

There was more bad news for France yesterday as Mbappe, 23, missed training with a suspected ankle inury, sparking fears he could miss the quarter-final.
Sun man Joe Hadden yesterday evaded security at Paris’s Grevin Museum to deck out the striker’s effigy in a Three Lions scarf and hat, with a St George’s flag wrapped around his waist.
English ex-pats in Paris said Mbappe’s Three Lions makeover suited the £250million PSG striker, who has banged in five goals already in the tournament.
Property developer Kyle Bridges, 37, who has lived in the French capital for two years, said: “That’s brilliant work by The Sun. They’ve been giving us loads of stick so we’ve got to give it back to them.”

Bugsy’s Bar bartender Luke Blackford, 23, added: “Great of the Sun to do it on their own soil. He looks better than ever in an England scarf.”
They were also confident of England’s chances of getting to the semi-finals, bolstered by players who have played in overseas leagues, including Jude Bellingham, Eric Dier and Kieran Trippier.
Kyle, who was in English boozer The Bowler, said: “We’ll smash them, I have absolutely no doubt about it.
“The players know how much this fixture means to the fans.

“Lads like Bellingham, Dier and Trippier have played abroad.
“They know what it’s like to be the only Englishman in the room.
“There’s an understanding of what it means to be English amongst these boys that we haven’t seen before.’’
Luke also believes they can beat the reigning world champs, though he is dreading the aftermath, regardless of the result in Qatar.
He said: “We’ll beat them 2-1. My French mates think they’ll win but I can’t see it.
“Either way, France is the worst country to be in for this – if we win they’re not going to be happy and if they beat us they’re going to be even more condescending.”
Mbappe became the youngest person to be immortalised in waxwork when the Grevin Museum unveiled his statue in 2018, aided by the man himself.
The striker is one of the quickest players in the world, clocking around 23.6mph.
