Phillips backs ‘top professional & great player’ Harry Maguire to have last laugh in England’s World Cup clash vs France

KALVIN PHILLIPS is backing Harry Maguire to have the last laugh on any France fans mocking him.England supporters launched a passionate defence of Maguire after being told that their French counterparts — and even their media — reckon star striker Kylian Mbappe should target the Manchester United centre-half in Saturday’s quarter-final.

Midfielder Kalvin Phillips has hailed him as one of the ‘best defenders’Credit: Getty
Phillips said: “Harry’s not played as much football as he probably would have liked this season and got a lot of stick, which I think is very undeserved.
“He’s a top professional and a great footballer.
“When he plays for Manchester United he’s one of the best defenders.
“For England, he’s been one of the top defenders for a long time, especially at tournaments.

“He’s always been that player when we have set pieces or we need to block or to make a challenge, he’s always the first one to do it.
“He’s always the first one to get his head to the ball. He’s scored some very important goals as well.
“For a lot of people, because he has been mocked quite a lot, he’s the first one they go to.
“If anything bad happened in the England team, he’d be the first person anything would be said about. It’s undeserved.

“If you look at the major tournaments he has played in and how well he has done in them, you can’t really mock him because he’s been unbelievable.”
Phillips also hailed Maguire’s centre-back partnership with John Stones.
The Manchester City midfielder said: “John’s one of the best centre-halves in the world right now.
“The way he plays at City, he’s brought it into this England team. He just seems so comfortable doing that. He’s very composed on the ball. He defends really well.
“Going forward, he’s probably one of the best centre halves you can have distributing the ball.
“And his partnership with Harry’s an amazing one. They understand each other so well. They feed off each other and help each other out.
“As of now it’s been the best centre-half partnership at the World Cup.”
Phillips urged English ex-pats in the Gulf region to take advantage of relaxed immigration rules and come to Qatar.
He said: “You will be one of the many that will eventually make the difference and hopefully play a massive part in history for us.
“I urge you to come out and support us. The support during the group stages has been amazing — especially the Wales game.
“The Senegal game was massive for us — and I don’t want to sound too cliched but the fans were like the 12th man urging us on. They have been amazing.

“Seeing the reactions back home has really given us a lift so hopefully we can keep making them happy, help them party and carry on in this tournament.
“So if you do get the chance and can get a ticket, make it the first thing on your bucket list.” More

England have been rocked by dismissals in World Cup knockout ties, with David Beckham sent off in 1998 and Wayne Rooney in 2006.
Boss Southgate has put his team on red alert.
And Kieran Trippier said: “It’s important you keep 11 on the pitch.
“It’s important not to give silly yellow cards away and have important players missing massive games.
“I feel that we are a disciplined team and we’ve not picked up a yellow.
“We’ve spoken about not wanting to miss a game by picking up stupid yellows for throwing the ball away or stuff like that.
“Obviously, you might need to take a tactical foul and can’t help that.”
There is a yellow card amnesty after the last-eight ties.

So if England make it through, none of their players will be suspended for the semi-final if booked on Saturday.
At Euro 2020, Southgate left Phil Foden out of his squad to face the Czech Republic amid the looming threat of a ban for the last 16.
He had been booked for a silly foul against Croatia.
Meanwhile, Declan Rice returned to training yesterday after illness.

Sterling missed the 3-0 victory over Senegal — flying home after a break-in at his Surrey mansion.
Team-mate Kalvin Phillips said: “Once one player goes through it, there is always a thought in the back of your mind that it might happen to you.
“It’s not really a nice feeling when you are so far away and have family at home.
“Raheem feels good enough to join back up with us — and we’re very happy his family are OK. It will be a massive lift.

“Raheem’s an amazing player and obviously had to fly home with what’s gone on.
“We’re just glad everything is OK now and he can rejoin us to play a big part in the next game, which we are looking forward to.”
Chelsea ace Sterling, who turned 28 yesterday, had been waiting for final assurances over security for his family before taking a flight back to Doha.
But after missing so much training, Sterling is not likely to be in the right condition to start against France.

He had already lost his place in boss Gareth Southgate’s first-choice XI and is expected to be named on the bench.
But Sterling’s return will boost Southgate’s options for the rest of the tournament — as long as the Three Lions can conquer the world champions. More

Trippier, 32, spent 18 months in the Spanish capital — winning the LaLiga title — before joining Newcastle in January.
He said: “Griezy is a great guy. We got on really well. His English is good and he really helped me when I was there, even though he arrived after me. I’ve huge respect for him.

Incredibly, Griezmann has played the last 71 games for France and the last match he missed was the 3-2 friendly win over England in 2017.
Coincidentally, that was Trippier’s Three Lions debut. The Toon ace added: “I was lucky to play with him. He is certainly a player to keep an eye on.
“He has the individual quality to find a pass, score a goal and arrive in the box.
“You look all over the France team and they have quality everywhere.
“They have individuals. But it’s a one-off game and we are ready.”
Trippier, like Harry Maguire, yesterday spoke of the belief within this current England squad.
Maguire had claimed England have “got to win the World Cup”, and Trippier explained: “We shouldn’t be ashamed to say we want to win it.”
As for the mood in camp, Trippier added: “Everyone is relaxed, so is Gareth [Southgate].
“He takes his meeting and then we get in the dressing room and listen to some horrific songs from some of the lads!”  More

So to encourage him to give Mbappe the bum’s rush, we produced jeans emblazoned with three lions and the name Kyle Walker Jeans Co.
Under the label, Mbappe peeks out of the pocket — a sure sign the French will be legging it from the tournament after an England stitch-up.

“And we had the chance to chat to him. He’s an unbelievably talented person but also a really nice person. He got along with everyone.
“It was a pleasure to have him. Knowing how big he is in the world and how well he’s doing, it’s an honour to have met him and spoken to him.”

There was also an emotional goodbye as the Three Lions squad stars said thanks to their guardian angel — head of security Tony Conniford.
He is leaving the FA after nine years with the team. Kalvin said: “It was a good night in general. We said farewell to Tony. For me, he has been one of the guys I have always gone to when needing help. He is a massive part of the England set-up as well.”

‘Psychic’ lion with ‘90% success rate’ predicts result of England vs France World Cup quarter-final

A LION with a skill for picking winners of football games has predicted who will triumph in England’s World Cup quarter-final clash with France on Saturday.According to zookeepers in Khon Khaen, Thailand, Chao Boy has a 90 per cent success rate for picking victors on the pitch.

The nine-year-old lion chooses winners by grabbing chicken drumsticks that are hung under two competing national flags.
Earlier today, footage showed the big cat striking the French flag, gobbling down the meal and calling the Les Bleus winners of the upcoming knockout final.
At first, when the St George’s Cross and the French tricolour were ziplined into the enclosure, Chao Boy seemed undecided.
He pondered about, possibly a telling sign it will be a tight game, but eventually he parked under the hard-fought winner.

Sceptical or not, the paws of the feline have an apparent track record of success.
The Thai lion recently chose Argentina over Holland, Brazil to beat Croatia and Morocco to knock out Portugal.
Zoo boss Narongwit Chodchoy said the lion’s success rate was extraordinary.
“Chao Boy has always been considered a favourite in predicting football results,” Mr Chodchoy said.
    Most read in The Sun
“Whether it’s the World Cup, Euros, or other major football matches, he can predict accurately with 80 or 90 per cent of his guesses being correct.”
Bookies are on the side of the lion, with France currently seen as favourites, however, Harry Kane is tipped to score the opener.
England will play France at the Al Bayt Stadium in the city of Al Khor on Saturday night, December 10, with kick-off at 10pm.
As far as predictions go, another outlandish punter purporting to be a time traveller reckons he knows who will come out on top in the crunch match.
He told social media users that the Three Lions will roar to victory by bagging two goals in the game against the current World champions.
In the barmy video, he claims Didier Deschamps’ side will only net one goal, squandering the French’s bid for glory.
The ridiculous TikTok racked up a sturdy 36,500 views in just 24 hours as football fans scoured the net for predictions.
