The 2010 finalist had battled back from 2-0 down to force extra-time thanks to Wout Weghorst’s late brace.
But the Dutch were unable to complete the comeback in the extra 30 minutes and were beaten after Virgil van Dijk and Steven Berghuis missed from 12-yards.
It left Lautaro Martinez to score the winning penalty and send Argentina through to the last four.
After the game there were scuffles between the two sets of players, with Dumfries at the centre of things.

Speaking on his future after the game, Neymar admitted: “Honestly, I do not know. I think talking now is bad because of the heat of the moment. Maybe I’m not thinking straight.

“I want to take this time to think about it, think about what I want for myself. I will not close the door to playing with Brazil, nor do I say 100 per cent that I’ll come back.
“I need to think a bit more about this, about what is the right thing for me and for the national team.”
Neymar put Brazil ahead in the first half of extra-time after the game had originally finished 0-0.
But Bruno Petkovic responded with three minutes left to play to send it to penalties.

Why is Cristiano Ronaldo not playing for Portugal in their World Cup quarter-final against Morocco?

CRISTIANO RONALDO is one of the most famous players in the history of football and arguably the most famous person in the world. He has scored eight goals in 20 World Cup matches and holds the world record for international goals scored.
Cristiano Ronaldo holds his head in his hands after being dropped to the bench for Portugal against SwitzerlandCredit: Rex
Over 20 years, his record has been simply stunning.
Therefore it was a surprise that he was not in the Portugal team for their last-16 World Cup tie against Switzerland.
However, the decision by Fernando Santos to bench Ronaldo was fully vindicated – as they went on to win 6-1, with the striker coming on with 17 minutes of normal time to go.
He had started all three of Portugal’s World Cup group games previously but dropped against the Swiss – and now the same is the case against Morocco.

Why is Cristiano Ronaldo not starting against Morocco?
The Portuguese icon, 37, has been dropped again for their game against Morocco.
The same happened in the stunning 6-1 win over Switzerland.
Fernando Santos has opted to go with Benfica forward Goncalo Ramos, 21, instead.
Incredibly, Ramos went on to score a stunning hat-trick for Portugal.
    Most read in Football
It meant Ronaldo found himself on the bench again, a place he got all-too familiar with for Manchester United earlier this season.
That is, before he and the club mutually agreed to tear up his contract.
Perhaps Santos was hedging his bets, knowing that if the tie went to extra time and penalties, it would have been more useful having Ronaldo come off the bench and score a penalty.

Weghorst, who is on loan at Besiktas from Burnley, scored an IDENTICAL goal two years ago while playing for Wolfsburg.
In a 2-1 Bundesliga win over Arminia Bielefeld in 2020, Weghorst opened the scoring from a cheeky free-kick routine.
With Max Arnold stood over the ball in a dangerous position, he tricked the defence by rolling it into the feet of Weghorst.
The striker then turned on a sixpence, before firing into the back of the net.

Fast forward two years, Weghorst scored the EXACT same goal for Holland on Friday night, in a World Cup semi-final no less.
His equaliser against Argentina was on the other side of the box to his goal for Wolfsburg, but the routine was the same.
Teun Koopmeiners looked for all the world as he if he was going to have a crack at goal, only to roll the ball into Weghorst’s feet.
Weghorst had originally got Holland back into the game with an 83rd minute header after Argentina had gone 2-0 up.

His goal from the free-kick then came in the ELEVENTH minute of time added on to send the World Cup quarter-final to extra-time.

And, despite some mind games from Weghorst, his dramatic brace turned out to be in vain.
