Man Utd star Jadon Sancho suffers knock on England duty and doubtful for World Cup 2022 qualifiers

JADON SANCHO picked up a knock in England training on Wednesday morning. The Manchester United winger is now a doubt for England’s World Cup qualifier against Hungary on Thursday, Gareth Southgate has confirmed.

The Three Lions boss did not elaborate on the nature of the injury but admitted he’d need assessing before the match in Budapest.
Southgate said: “We’ve got a small knock with Jadon this morning.
“So we’re going to assess him and everybody else I think is fine for the game.”
England have qualifiers against Andorra and Poland following the Hngaty clash.
Earlier this week, Southgate told Sancho and his fellow Three Lions stars who missed penalties in the Euro 2020 defeat to Italy to expect jeers.
Sancho and Marcus Rashford were taunted with ridiculous chants of ‘you let your country down’ by Leeds fans this month.

Southgate, who missed a spot-kick at Euro 96, said: “I’m obviously in a good place to be able to help them with that because I experienced that myself.
“But there’s been some fabulous receptions.
“I was at Brentford when Bukayo got an amazing reception.
“I think even some of the supporters who were singing those things were saying, ‘We know it’s not the case but they’re our rivals, we’re into club football now and we’re going to try to put those players off their game’.
“I think there are different strands of that sort of response and it’s something the players will have to work through.”

Sancho has had a slow start to life at Man Utd after his £73million switch from Borussia Dortmund.
He came off the bench in the Reds’ first two games of the season before starting for the first time at Wolves on Sunday.
But he had to be consoled on the bench after failing to impact the game and being subbed off after 72 minutes.

Assistant ref who failed to give Cristiano Ronaldo’s ‘goal’ vs Serbia DROPPED from Holland’s Euro 2020 officiating team

THE assistant who failed to give Cristiano Ronaldo’s ‘goal’ for Portugal against Serbia has been DROPPED from Holland’s Euro 2020 officiating team – by the man who was refereeing the same game.Mario Diks’ blunder made him the centre of attention in last month’s controversial World Cup qualifier that ended 2-2.

And his crucial mistake has now resulted in exile from the Dutch Euro ref squad, with the decision made by Danny Makkelie – who was in charge of the fiery fixture.
The incident happened when Ronaldo, 36, appeared to put the ball over the line with just seconds on the clock to make it 3-2 to Portugal.
Serbia skipper Stefan Mitrovic pulled off a desperate clearance to prevent the ball from hitting the back of the net.
But linesman Diks, who was unable to call upon goal-line technology, did not raise his flag to confirm it had gone in.
That led to a furious outburst from Ronaldo, who was adamant the ball had crossed the line.
He marched over to Diks to argue his case but his protest fell on deaf ears as the whistle blew for a 2-2 result.
Replays showed Ronaldo had every reason to be dismayed, with multiple angles showing the ball was over the line.
Dutch ref Makkelie, promptly booked a raging Ronaldo, who walked off the field waving his arms in disbelief before ripping off his captain’s armband and launching it to the floor.

However, Makkelie later apologised to Ronnie for Diks’ mistake that cost Portugal the win.
And Makkelie has now axed assistant Diks from his officiating team for this summer’s Euros.
It remains to be seen if Ronaldo is appeased though, with the veteran refusing to say sorry for his behaviour in the game.
He explained: Ronaldo was unapologetic after the final whistle, writing on social media: “Being captain of the Portugal team is one of the greatest privileges of my life.
“I always give and will give everything for my country, that will never change.
“But there are difficult times to deal with, especially when we feel that an entire nation is being harmed.
“Lift your head and face the next challenge now! Strength, Portugal.”
But Ronnie’s actions were labelled ‘unacceptable’ and ‘setting a bad example’ to kids who idolise him.
However, there was some good news to come from the incident, with Ronnie’s discarded captain’s armband put up for auction to raise money for a sick child in Serbia.

Mason Mount one of first names on teamsheet.. England boss Southgate’s only issue is where to play him

MASON MOUNT is one of the first names on Gareth Southgate’s team sheet.  The England manager’s only decision is where to play him.
Mason Mount has become an important player for England – his versatility is key for Gareth SouthgateCredit: Getty
Yet this is not a problem but instead, a massive plus. Wherever you put Mount on the pitch, is like putting a square peg in a square hole.
And on Wednesday night, the Chelsea player underlined what an enormous talent he is providing England’s midfield with an energetic heartbeat.
Just when Southgate’s team were running out of ideas, he caused some major panic in the visiting defence to win a corner with Harry Maguire hammering the winner.
All of a sudden, the group seemed a lot easier again.
There was a day when the so-called utility player was someone not really good enough to start anywhere.
But Mount’s versatility and class – as he displayed in abundance here – has already been enough to impress Thomas Tuchel at Chelsea.
Mount was tagged as the teacher’s pet when Frank Lampard was Chelsea manager and we have a similar situation with England.
This was Mount’s eight successive start and this was only his 16th cap.

Southgate has known for a long time here is a serious quality player, even though England fans are only just realising it.
Particularly in the first half for England last night, he was unplayable on the left of a central three.
In a clear tactical ploy, he pushed wide out towards Raheem Sterling to such an extent that at times, the pair could have kept exchanging fist bumps. Poland were swamped.
It was down the left where Sterling caused mayhem with a brilliant run to win a penalty for Harry Kane.
Equally, there were various occasions where Mount and Sterling enjoyed a telepathic understanding.
Pushing for a second goal before half-time, Sterling was released by his partner in crime and while the shot was blocked, Mount delivered an attempt and believed he was fouled in the process screaming in agony.

Mount, you can be certain, will be used in different positions in the two warm-up games against Austria and Romania before Croatia arrive here at Wembley for the first game of Euro2020 on June 13.
Against Albania, Mount played the left of the attacking three with Kane the lone striker.
He made it 2-0 and became the first Chelsea player to score or assist in three consecutive England appearances since Frank Lampard, in 2013.
In the 5-0 win over San Marino, Mount was back where he was here last night, to the left of the midfield three.
Previously, Southgate has not been afraid to put Mount deeper in a defensive two alongside close pal Declan Rice, West Ham’s increasingly impressive midfielder grafter.
It will not be long before both Mount and Rice are the official captains of their respective clubs.
England boast the most-valuable squad of all Euro 2020 nations
Despite his outstanding first half Mount, like his team-mates, were nowhere near as effective after the break.
They were not helped by the cock-up between Nick Pope and John Stones which led to Poland’s leveller through Jakub Moder.
Yet Mount was on a mission to change the game and he did just that, delivering a good run and attempting a shot before forcing the corner expertly taken by Phil Foden.
With Stones and Maguire also involved, the winner was certainly made in Manchester.
Yet this promising England team, which is by no means perfect and has some worrying issues, is not simply a northern powerhouse.
There are a few southerners doing their bit for Southgate with captain Kane still the main man. But Mount is not far behind.

England 2 Poland 1: Watch Harry Maguire spare John Stones’ blushes with late goal after Man City ace’s gaffe at Wembley

TWO assists for John Stones, then – one for Poland’s equaliser and one for England’s winner.Gareth Southgate had regarded Stones’ resurgence at Manchester City as a game-changer, allowing him to rip up his unpopular back five and pair him with Man United captain Harry Maguire in a flat back four.

Maguire smashed in a fine strike to make it three straight World Cup qualifier wins for EnglandCredit: Reuters
So what to make of this? Stones and Maguire looking shaky in defence as Poland gave Southgate’s side a serious second-half scare, yet the two Yorkshiremen combining for the late winner.
At least this victory puts England firmly in control of their World Cup qualifying group.
But they are surely going to need to tighten up at the back to have any chance of success at this summer’s Euros.
Stones has been a mainstay of a quadruple-chasing team and returned to the England side last week after a gap of almost 18 months.
But despite all of his fine attributes, Stones can be a proper old scatterbrain.
And one such moment allowed Poland’s Brighton midfielder Jakub Moder to equalise Harry Kane’s first-half penalty.
England had bossed the first half but as soon as the Poles showed some ambition, they were seriously rattled.
And you can bet that Stones’ blunder will frighten Southgate back into his comfort blanket of three central defenders and wing-backs. You could hardly blame him.

The last time Stones played for England against a decent team, the Dutch in the 2019 Nations League semi-final, he made two howlers which condemned Southgate’ side to defeat.
And the City man does not look quite so assured without the brilliant Ruben Dias alongside him.
Southgate has had some good fortune with opposition absentees in his time – his two 2018 World Cup knock-out wins came when Colombia’s main man James Rodriguez was injured and against Sweden when the mighty Zlatan Ibrahimovic was in temporary retirement.
Eden Hazard missed Belgium’s Nations League defeat here in the autumn and here came Poland without their one world-class player, Robert Lewandowski, and with another attacking threat, Arkadiusz Milik surprisingly left on the bench until half-time.
Southgate made only one change from Sunday’s 2-0 win in Albania, Ben Chilwell replacing Luke Shaw at left-back – and he stuck with a flat back four.

Poland’s new boss, the former Leicester and Swansea manager Paulo Sousa, has been talking about possession-based football but there was little sign of that as the visitors sat deep early on.
England probed around patiently, Mount and Foden passing and moving and flitting and floating, Sterling dribbling and driving.
And it was an alert piece of play from Foden which set England on their way to a 19th-minute opener.
Foden nicked possession and released Sterling who surged forward, ran out of space, decelerated and ‘invited contact’ from Barnsley defender Michal Helik.
Cunning? Streetwise? Cheating? Take your pick but ref Bjorn Kuipers pointed to the spot, there was no VAR to overturn it and, even when there is a VAR at the Euros, he’d have probably upheld it in the same way you’ll get done for doing 45mph on an empty stretch of the M1.
Kane leathered the spot-kick straight down the middle and he is now England’s leading penalty-scorer with 11, surpassing Frank Lampard.

All hope looked lost after Stones’ blunder at the backCredit: Andy Hooper-The Daily Mail
The Spurs man is lethal from the spot. Perhaps he ought to move to Manchester United. He’d score 50 goals a season there, 32 from penalties.
Every time Sterling darted at them, the Polish defence seemed to panic – though he might have squared for Foden rather than shooting himself on his next foray.
The next time, Sterling went on a Ricky Villa run, zig-zagging through the Poles like a slalom skier, only to be denied by a last-ditch tackle.
Then a sweet inter-change – a Mount pass, a Foden lay-off and a thumping Kane shot pushed away by keeper Wojciech Szczesny – a man whose name we had learned how to spell before he left Arsenal, but had since forgotten.
Declan Rice was bossing midfield again, alongside him Kalvin Phillips would have been boosting his pass completion rate by playing a lot of safe, obvious passes.
Sousa sent on Milik at half-time and Poland looked livelier – Stones and Nick Pope getting muddled and almost allowing in the newcomer.
It was down to Maguire to keep England on track for Qatar 2022Credit: AFP
Gareth Southgate was sure to be a relieved man at the final whistleCredit: Reuters
That was a warning for Poland’s 57th-minute leveller – Pope passed out, Stones absent-mindedly played a loose ball, which Moder pounced upon, shoulder-barged the Manchester City man out of the way, exchanged passes with Milik and hammered into the far corner.
It was the first goal Pope had conceded in his seventh England appearance – not that he’d had too many saves to make before this.
The Poles had scrapped their back five and were looking full of it now – Milik off-target with a free header which he should have buried.
England’s defence were often being pulled apart at will but they still possessed a threat going forward.
And when they won an 85th-minute corner, Foden delivered from the left, Stones cut back header from beyond the far post and Maguire thumped home a winner.
Relief for Southgate, but more questions than answers.

Arsenal hero Thierry Henry hired bodyguard to protect daughter after receiving death threats for Ireland handball goal

THIERRY Henry hired a bodyguard to protect his daughter after facing death threats over his handball goal for France that stopped Ireland going to the 2010 World Cup.The former Arsenal and Barcelona ace admitted he is still ‘not proud’ of the goal and defended it as something that happens in the game, just like Diego Maradona’s infamous Hand of God goal.
Furious Irish fans felt cheated by him handling a ball and setting up the goal in the crucial 2009 play-off game before going on to win 2-1Credit: AFP
But he told for the first time how he feared for his family, especially model ex-wife Nicole Merry and their daughter Tea, 15, who was four at the time.
Furious Irish fans felt cheated by him handling a ball and setting up the goal in the crucial 2009 play-off game before going on to win 2-1.
Thierry, 43, said: “Am I proud of it? No. Do I get abused by the Irish fans sometimes? Yes I do.
“And it’s hard to take because this is not the type of player I am but when you have a bad instinct or reaction, it’s difficult to explain.
“I can’t explain it because it happens, but this is where it becomes difficult.
“And I’m not saying that for people to say, ‘Oh my God’. No.
“But then after that, the abuse that I got – I received letters, death threats, my daughter had to go to school with a bodyguard for two weeks because I was scared: ‘We know where you live.’
Henry pictured with his daughter at a football gameCredit: News Group Newspapers Ltd
“I was in Barcelona, don’t get me wrong. But my daughter was still here (in England).
“And I’m not trying to make it sound better than what it is because it happened.
“But the impact that it has on your family sometimes, this is where it becomes difficult.
“Because on something that I didn’t think about doing, it was an instinct reaction, a bad instinct reaction that players do often when they are in and around the ball.
“You extend your arm and it comes out – I’m not saying it is right at all – but it comes out.
Thierry Henry has said he got a bodyguard to protect his daughter after death threats were madeCredit: Getty Images – Getty
“But after? I’ll be honest with you, it was hard.
“It was hard because you’re receiving stuff like that at my ex-wife and because I got scared I put a bodyguard for my daughter – I never shared that, but you know, I’m sharing it now.
“Understand me well – please, understand me well – I’m not saying this to make what happened better or not better, it has nothing to do with anything.
“But that was hard. This is the stuff that people sometimes don’t understand, you don’t want to receive death threats.
“You don’t want to receive whatever – you don’t want your daughter to be targeted. You don’t want that.”
    TRAPATTONI’S REFUSAL
At the time, then-Irish boss Giovanni Trapattoni refused to label Thierry Henry a cheat despite the France captain admitting to the Republic of Ireland’s players that he had handled the ball in the build-up to the goal.
But defender Richard Dunne had complained: “The World Cup is run by people who want to decide who gets there.
“Big teams get big decisions. The referee says he was 100 per cent certain that Henry didn’t handball it but Henry said [to me] that he did.
“He said that he handballed it but he didn’t mean it and we deserved to win.
“It is there for all to see but that’s not going to change anything. It’s not a difficult one to see. The linesman was in line with it.
“We deserved to win. We could have got a couple of goals but theirs knocked the stuffing out of us.”

    HANDBALL
Henry handled twice after appearing to be in an offside position at the free-kick that led to the incident from which he squared for William Gallas to score France’s extra-time goal, which gave them a 2-1 aggregate win and took them to the finals in South Africa.
Afterwards, Henry said: “I am not the ref. The ball hit my hand and, I will be honest, the ball hit my hand. It was a handball.
“What did I say to Richard Dunne? I told him. And he told me the same, you are not the ref.
“That’s why the Irish players didn’t run to me, they ran to the ref.
“You can clearly see the opportunity. [Sébastien] Squillaci went to jump with two Irish players and then the next thing I know, the ball hit my arm, I played it, and the ref allowed it.
“It could have been better to do it in another way but like I said, I am not the ref.”
Looking back on the incident more than a decade later, Henry told ex-Liverpool star Robbie Fowler on his podcast that it was a life-changing moment.
But he defended it as something that happens in the game and claimed that while Lionel Messi was praised for a similar goal, he was seen as “the Devil”.

    ‘SHAPES YOU’
He said: “I think you go through a moment in life that shapes you.You can’t go back and say, ‘I would have done this.’ I would have been the same person.
“It is what it is and I said it at the time. Remember Stephane Henchoz holding the ball on the line when we played in the final (the 2001 FA Cup final between Liverpool and Arsenal).
“They got a goal kick and Henchoz put his arm out to save the ball.“That’s what you do as a player, sorry, you have that bad reaction, that bad moment where you extend your arm.
“I did not think about it – it happened.
“Was I proud of it? No I wasn’t proud of it – it happened.
“The referee didn’t blow the whistle. I wasn’t proud of it. I’m still not proud of it.
“But things happen in the game, like I said we lost the FA Cup final against Liverpool that night, nobody remembers that Henchoz handballed the ball on the line, pretended to go with his head and pushed it with his hand.
“I didn’t hear anyone crying for Arsenal at the end of the game. Liverpool scored two goals at the end with Michael Owen and I didn’t hear a peep about the handball of Henchoz.
The Irish Sun’s front page following the infamous handball goalCredit: News Group Newspapers Ltd
“Regardless of what happened, it is what it is – it’s just something that happened in the game.
“It’s a game of football and this is when a game of football goes really far.
“After with all the abuse that I got – whether I deserved it or I didn’t deserve it – it’s still something that happened on the football pitch.
“Maradona. Lionel Messi scored a goal like that against Espanyol for Barcelona with his hand. He scored it. I didn’t hear anyone killing Lionel Messi.
“Anyway, it happened to me. I had to take it. I took it. But was I proud of it? No.

“I nearly didn’t even go to the World Cup because a lot of stuff happened, it became a political problem.
“Ministers and Prime Ministers talking about it, the President talking about it.
“When Messi scored his goal they were like, ‘Oh my God, he’s getting closer to Maradona, what a genius.’ I was the Devil.”

Watch as Donny van de Beek puts United despair behind him to score in Holland’s 7-0 thrashing of Gibraltar

Van de Beek has featured only 13 times in the Premier League for United, making just two starts.
But he took full advantage after coming off the Holland bench in Tuesday’s World Cup qualifier against Gibraltar.
Van de Beek scored the second-last goal in a 7-0 thrashing for Frank de Boer’s men.
And the Netherlands have now won two on the bounce having suffered a dismal 4-2 defeat to Turkey in the first match of their qualifying campaign last week.
Steven Berghuis opened the scoring minutes before half-time as the Dutch struggled to break down their opponents.
But the floodgates opened in the second half as Luuk de Jong made it 2-0 ten minutes after the break.
Memphis Depay and Georginio Wijnaldum then scored within a minute of each other.
And Donyell Malen made it three goals in three minutes with a strike soon after.

Van de Beek then got his moment in the spotlight with an 85th minute effort, before Depay bagged his second of the night just before full-time.
Van de Beek will be hoping his performance did enough to impress Ole Gunnar Solskjaer ahead of Sunday’s Premier League clash with Brighton.
United have some injury problems in attack and may need to shake things up.
Marcus Rashford and Mason Greenwood were both forced to withdraw early from England’s senior and Under-21 squads.

Captain’s armband Cristiano Ronaldo threw away in disgust after goal row on sale to raise money for sick Serbian child

Humanitarian organisation Together for Life hopes to raise €2.5million (around £2.1m) needed for his treatment.
And they are now selling Ronaldo’s Portugal armband to the highest bidder over the next three days in an online auction to help reach that target.
It was taken from the pitch of Belgrade’s Rajko Mitic stadium by a worker, who donated it to Together for Life and baby Gavril, after Portugal’s 2-2 World Cup qualifier against Serbia on Saturday.
The charity auction marks an incredible twist to the tale.
