Lionesses set for France clash with England to return to host nation of 2019 Women’s World Cup

ENGLAND WOMEN will take on France in their second international fixture under interim boss Hege Riise. The match will see the Lionesses play on French soil in April for the first time since reaching the semis of the 2019 Women’s World Cup.

It will also be the first game the side – ranked sixth in the world – will play overseas under Riise.
And the Norway-born head coach is likely to face a tough encounter with France, currently the third-best team in the world after the United States and Germany.
Riise, 51, said: “I am looking forward to taking the team to play France.
“We all know they are one of the best in the world, but they will also recognise we are at a high level and will give them a competitive game.
“We have to use every opportunity to learn and improve, as individuals and as a group.
“With the Canada game also, this will be a great two matches and I am very happy for the players to have this opportunity.”
England’s friendly against Corinne Diacre’s France will take place on April 4, 19 days before the Lionesses clash with Canada on April 23.
And the game, to be aired on BBC Four, will kick-off at 8:10 pm at the Stade Michel d’Ornano in Caen.
Riise’s players will be eager to pick up their second international win this year after thrashing Northern Ireland 6-0 in February.
The last duel between the sides ended in a 4-1 victory for the Lionesses at the SheBelieves Cup in 2019.

Toni Duggan, Jodie Taylor, Jill Scott and Fran Kirby netted the goals for the team on that day.
Riise will be hoping for a repeat of that performance as well as a win against Canada who her team will play next in Stoke.
That game will be the first time England take on play Canada since losing 1-0 to Bev Priestman’s side in Manchester in 2019.

If Boris Johnson lands 2030 World Cup I’d be happy to hang off Wembley zip-line with him, says Karren Brady

MY guess is that Boris Johnson would be happy to hang off a zip line at Wembley should our bid for the 2030 World Cup be successful.
His enthusiasm for taking a shot extended this week to a £2.8million funding offer.

Boris Johnson greeted the 2012 Olympics with great enthusiasm while he was Mayor of LondonCredit: Barcroft Media

Baroness Brady, on a zip-line as imagined by SunSport

This can only be for starters. There would not be much change out of £25m for the overall bid.
Boris would love to take the promise of the greatest one-sport event in the world into the general election of 2024, the year the football associations of the world make their decision.
But in fairness to our Prime Minister he is a great, sometimes barely controlled, enthusiast.
Indeed, celebrating the 2012 Olympic Games was how the Mayor of London came to be stuck 15 feet above the ground, holding a plastic Union Jack in either hand.

Britain loved those games and the world watched, entranced by them — the spectacle, the handsome backdrops, the pomp and ceremony, the whole razzle dazzle of the best in sport.
In all they cost a lot but brought masses of investment and loads of joy. Just as the World Cup would.
It is 55 years since England hosted — and won — the competition and it really is time that we welcomed it again.
But this proposal will be different. England will be joined by Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland, a unification I think only football could deliver.

There are, though, drawbacks to a combined British Isles team, mainly that the five nations have separate FAs and three of them would vigorously safeguard their historic right to independence.
Opponents might also shout ‘foul’ at a five-vote headstart when the ultimate decision is made.
The corruption that we now know brought about the election of Russia and Qatar will not be repeated and certainly not in the form it took in 2010, as Fifa have had to drain their swamp of corruption.
We have to believe that Fifa’s new process will be honest. The truth is simply that if we’re not in the running, we can’t win it.
The competition already promises to be immense and because our bid would be on behalf of the five football associations there are bound to be internal tensions.
These have to be overcome. No other campaign will have our strengths but it is wise to be cautious not to over-emphasise these.
We know what happened in 2010 to our high-power submission that came to a humiliating first-round end — a massive snub to England’s delegation, which included Prince William and the then-PM David Cameron.
There’s no need to go too deeply into that defeat.

    England’s star-studded delegation couldn’t sway the votes in 2010Credit: PA:Press Association

Qatar were announced as 2022 World Cup hosts back in 2010Credit: Reuters
There was evidence within months that the vote had been rigged.
Russia in 2018 and then Qatar four years later?
How could it be otherwise when some 40 individuals and entities have been charged with corruption offences ranging from racketeering, wire fraud and money laundering conspiracies.
But the truth behind what happened in 2010 has to be put to one side.
No one likes sore losers. Fifa have introduced a new conclusion — each member country now has a vote and our appeal to them has to be much more persuasive than the chant ‘bring football home’.
I am sure we will showcase our talent at organising big tournaments this summer when London hosts the two semis and final of the newly structured Uefa European Championships.
Meanwhile, the five FAs must make an official bid encouraged by Uefa who are bound to press the case that it is our continent’s turn.

England’s bid will be bolstered by the rest of the British IslesCredit: Reuters
Already in the ring for their backing is a strong host combination in Spain and Portugal, plus another from four countries based on Romania.
Worldwide there are already two further two bids but I can’t help thinking that it ought to take something very special to beat the appeal of the British Isles.
And should we win, I’d be delighted to join Boris on a zip line waving the five flags.

Demarai Gray, Mason Holgate and Andre Gray among TEN England stars Jamaica hope to hand 2022 World Cup call-ups

JAMAICA are plotting to call up TEN England stars ahead of the 2022 World Cup.
And the head of Jamaican football has revealed a number of passport applications are already under way.

JFF chief Michael Ricketts said: “I see Andre Gray, Demarai Gray, Isaac Hayden, Mason Holgate, Liam Moore, who already has his Jamaican passport, Nathan Redmond, Kemar Roofe and Ivan Toney — all of these we are in the process of acquiring their Jamaican passports.”
West Ham striker Michail Antonio and Norwich right-back Max Aarons are also targets for the Reggae Boyz.
Antonio, 30, turned down Jamaica in 2016 and was called up by England bosses Sam Allardyce and Gareth Southgate, although he did not play.
And Southampton forward Redmond played against Germany in 2017 but it was a friendly so he is still eligible for Jamaica.

Aarons, Watford striker Andre Gray, Newcastle midfielder Hayden, Everton defender Holgate and Reading centre-back Moore have all played for Three Lions at youth level.
Norwich full-back Aarons, 20, has been rated at £30million-£35m after interest from Barcelona, Manchester United and Bayern Munich.
And winger Demarai Gray, 24, who won 26 Three Lions Under-21 caps, was linked with Southampton before leaving Leicester for Bayer Leverkusen in January.
Meanwhile, Brentford frontman Toney has been in the spotlight after claiming players are being ‘used as puppets’ in the fight against racism.

England World Cup winner Sir Geoff Hurst backs Boris Johnson’s offer to host Euros in the UK

ENGLAND World Cup hero Sir Geoff Hurst last night backed PM Boris Johnson’s offer to host the Covid-hit Euros here.
Sir Geoff declared the bid to bring football home again would “recapture the spirit of ’66” when his hat-trick saw off the Germans in the final.

Twelve nations are due to stage the Euros, with the semis and final at Wembley.
But in a move heartily backed by The Sun, Boris offered our stadia for the whole tournament amid our jabs success.
Sir Geoff said staging this summer’s European championships here would bring joy to the country’s pandemic-hit footie fans.

He told The Sun: “I know a thing or two about the joy having a summer tournament on home soil can bring.
“Winning the World Cup as the home nation — I enjoy it daily. So let’s recapture that spirit of ’66 — we could all do with that now.”
The move to hold the tournament here comes as the UK’s vaccine rollout has surged ahead of the continent’s.

Hosting the whole of the Euros could give a massive £1billion boost to the UK economyCredit: Reuters
It means while fans may not be allowed at stadia in the EU by the June 11 date of the opening game, around 10,000 supporters should be able to attend matches here.

And with all restrictions scheduled to be lifted in England, we should have full stadia by June 21.
That would include 90,000 in Wembley, which is already hosting the semis and final in July.
Staging the Covid-delayed Euro 2020 here would be a huge economic boost worth about £1billion.
And Sir Geoff, 79, who hit a hat-trick in England’s 4-2 World Cup final triumph against West Germany at Wembley in 1966, declared it could be a reminder of those glory days.
He said it could also recreate the magical summer of 1996 when Baddiel and Skinner sang Football’s Coming Home and Gazza led England’s Three Lions to the brink of triumph in the Euros.

It’s been a long time since we had a tournament and on top of it arriving at the end of the pandemic, it will be fantastic
    Sir Geoff Hurst

Sir Geoff added: “The crowds will be enormous and celebratory when they are allowed in to see the Euros.
“There’s nothing like it. It’s been a long time since we had a tournament and on top of it arriving at the end of the pandemic, it will be fantastic.”
The footie hero, one of more than 20million Brits who have already had their first jab, was speaking after the PM told The Sun the nation stood ready to host the tournament.
Sir Geoff believes the vaccine rollout will free the country to do it.
He said: “After all this pandemic nightmare we have encountered, the vaccine is fantastic news and the way we have produced the vaccine in comparison to many countries in the world is outstanding.
“That is the only way out, getting vaccines to everybody in the country and we are ahead of most people doing it.

Boris Johnson, pictured in 2010, says England stands ready to host the tournamentCredit: PA:Press Association
“We are all in this together.
“And with our world-class facilities and passionate fans we can give Europe — and the rest of the world — a tournament that everyone can be proud of and remember forever.”
The nation may have to compensate other countries for losing tournament games, estimated at around £3million per match in lost TV, advertising and other revenue.
But hosting the whole event could give a £1billion boost to the UK economy.
Mr Johnson has already told The Sun that the nation was on standby to take on more games.
He said: “Any other matches they want hosted, we are certainly on for that!”

    German tabloid jibe at Johnson

GERMANY is doubtful it can stage the Euros and tabloid Bild yesterday appeared to accept the idea of England doing so — with a jokey “You Get The Euros, We Get The Trophy” offer to Boris Johnson.

And Whitehall sources say they stand “ready and waiting” for the call from Uefa to stage the entire summer showpiece.
It would hand a much needed boost to the hospitality sector after a crippling lockdown.
British Beer & Pub Association boss Emma McClarkin said: “The Euros going ahead in the UK after a torrid 18 months would be the perfect kick-off for our recovery. The pub is the home of football.
“There would be nothing better than a home festival of football to kick off a fantastic summer in the nation’s pubs.
“We have all missed it and it would give pubs a huge boost which they need now more than ever.”
England superfan Mark Knapper, 62, who first went away to watch the Three Lions against West Germany in 1978, said supporters would be “over the moon” if it happened.

He said: “Everywhere in Europe knows the UK is doing so well with its vaccine rollout, so I think it would soften the blow as it’s not a case of, ‘Sorry lads, you can’t do it’.
“It’s a case of we think this is probably the safest option rather than having people travel all around Europe.”
“I’d love it. I think it would be fantastic and I remember how good Euro 96 was.”
Tournament chiefs at Uefa last night welcomed the PM’s offer to stage the whole tournament — or host matches that other countries are unable to fulfil.
One source told The Sun: “It is great for us that England is so keen to play its part this summer.”
    MAJOR DOUBT
Uefa plans to confirm the tournament schedule by April 7.
That is the date they have ordered the 12 planned host cities to confirm their willingness to stage games.
But Uefa is demanding all hosts commit to staging games with fans inside grounds.

Only England will be far enough advanced with its vaccination programme by the June 11 opener.
Ireland has already cast major doubt on its ability to host matches in Dublin.

Spain, Italy and Germany are all either in or facing new lockdowns.
But there could be a full house at Wembley by the time skipper Harry Kane leads England out for their final group game against the Czech Republic on June 22.
It is likely only UK-based fans would be allowed to attend games.

Only UK can get fans in grounds

By Martin Lipton, Chief Sports Reporter

THE Euros — already delayed by a year because of Covid — are supposed to be held in 12 cities across the Continent.
As well as Wembley, matches are due to be played at Glasgow’s Hampden Park, Dublin, Amsterdam, Bilbao, Bucharest, Budapest, Copenhagen, Munich, Rome, St Petersburg and Azerbaijan capital Baku.
But Uefa chiefs now insist all host nations commit to games with fans.
And by the start of the tournament on June 11 only the UK is likely to be so far advanced with its vaccination programme to be in a position to safely do so.
Nine host countries say they could take fans but have not submitted concrete proposals.
But Dublin has already said it could struggle and Spain, Italy and Germany also have major doubts.
That means at least 15 matches may shift to England — if not the whole tournament.
They would include the first game on June 11, due in Rome between Italy and Turkey.
If England does stage the tournament it is likely only UK-based fans could attend.
Last month’s announcement on crowds would mean around 10,000 allowed at Wembley for England’s matches against Croatia on June 13 and Scotland on June 18.
But if the jabs programme accelerates that could increase to around 30,000 at all grounds staging early group matches.
After all restrictions are due to be lifted on June 21, the full 90,000 capacity at Wembley could be used for England’s last group game against the Czech Republic on June 22 and all subsequent matches including the final and semis.
Fans may be asked to produce a vaccine passport or certificate to get in.
Manchester’s Old Trafford and Etihad stadiums, Anfield in Liverpool, Villa Park in Birmingham and both St James’ Park in Newcastle and Sunderland’s Stadium of Light could be used for matches.
In London Wembley, the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, Arsenal’s Emirates and the London Stadium used by West Ham are all possibles.
    Uefa decides on April 7.

    The Sun Says

IT’S impossible to imagine the Euros being held safely in full stadiums across 12 European cities this summer.

The EU vaccine rollout is in disarray. Many nations there doubt they will have fans back in grounds by then.
Here, good news keeps coming. So, as 1966 World Cup legend Sir Geoff Hurst says, why not let England host the lot?
Our jabs, almost 21million now done, are slashing hospitalisations and deaths. The case rate nationwide is the lowest since last September and falling.
Some eight million of us now live in areas with zero cases, or close to it.
PHE even reckon the vaccines may stop Covid spreading almost entirely.
The Government’s sluggish timetable for our June 21 liberation looks out of date. If our progress continues without setbacks we can shave a few weeks off it.
And Uefa should let us host a magnificent tournament before capacity crowds . . . all safely jabbed up.

World Cup 2022 tickets being sold for staggering £42,000 as Fifa launch hospitality packages for Qatar tournament

FIFA is already flogging tickets for the Qatar World Cup Final for a whopping £42,270.
Organisers have released details of hospitality packages for high-rollers for the tournament shoot-out – and the seats don’t come cheap.

Fans signing up must buy a minimum of two tickets for a total of £42,270 for the game at the Lusail Stadium next year.
Supporters meet in a lounge in the ground and fans get a four-course meal, including soft drinks, mocktails, cocktails, Champagne, spirits, wines and beer.
The service is available before kick-off, during half-time and after matches.
The price tag also entitles buyers to seats at both semi-finals and the third-place game.

Fifa’s official partner firm MATCH Hospitality is flogging the packages and the world governing body has warned fans not to deal with third-party firms offering deals to the event.
Fans are told: “Fifa has appointed MATCH Hospitality as the exclusive hospitality rights holder for the Fifa World Cup Qatar 2022.
“MATCH Hospitality is the only company in the world that is authorised by Fifa to offer and guarantee exclusive ticket-inclusive hospitality packages for every match of the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022™, directly or through its appointed Sales Agents.”

“Designed around the dance of light and shadows as seen with the fanar lanterns, the stadium is a rich representation of the Arabic and Islamic world, showcasing motifs of vessels, bowls and art pieces from the region.”
The Qatar World Cup will be the first tournament held during the winter, due to the extreme summer heat in the Middle East.

England risk being kicked out of the World Cup under barmy Labour border plans

ENGLAND risk being kicked out of the World Cup under barmy Labour border plans.
Sir Keir Starmer wants arrivals from every country to spend ten days in hotel quarantine.

There would be no exemptions for Three Lions aces.
Currently, the measures will apply to 33 countries and there are no exemptions for elite sports stars coming from nations where quarantining in hotels is required.
But if the proposals were expanded under Labour’s plans, England’s World Cup qualification games in Poland, San Marino and Albania would have to be forfeited.

Gareth Southgate’s team would be handed a 3-0 loss in each game, severely denting their chances of qualifying for Qatar 2022.
If the games did go ahead, they’d risk the Premier League’s wrath as stars would be held for ten days in hotels on their return.
The move would also throw the Euros, the Premier League, the Champions League, rugby’s Six Nations and the new Formula 1 season into chaos.
MPs will vote on Labour’s proposal which lists one exemption to the blanket ban — for hauliers.

Labour’s Shadow Home Secretary, Nick Thomas-Symonds said: “By quarantining all arrivals, we can help protect vaccines against new strains.”
But the Premier League has worked hard to make teams Covid secure, with players often travelling in bubbles.
A Tory Party spokesman said: “Labour’s plan to put 20,000 people a day in hotels is implausible.”
An insider said: “All sports have the strictest covid protocols but if these measures were introduced British teams in Europe have a real headache over how to compete.
“That in turn would have financial implication, as well as issues over future qualification.”
The source added the measures would impact the “already truncated” season which needs to finished before the delayed Euros this summer – which would also be affected by the measures, as Wembley stadium hosts all three England group games, the semi-finals and final.
Motor racing would also be affected, with the Formula 1 season set to start in weeks in Bahrain.
Races in “red listed” Brazil and Abu Dhabi are taking place at the end of the year, when organisers hope restrictions have been lifted.

The England Football team could miss out on next year’s World Cup due to Labour’s proposalsCredit: Times Newspapers Ltd
A Formula 1 spokesman said: “Last year we proved we could compete safely with over 80,000 tests and 0.1 per cent positives.
“We employ over 40,000 both directly and indirectly through supply chains and have over 25,000 highly skilled engineers.
“We cannot operate if we cannot travel and the elite sport exemption is quite simply keeping our sport and others going and saving jobs.”
A Whitehall source said: “So long as we remain confident on public health grounds, we’d support players travelling to compete.
“A blanket ban would effectively stop us playing in international competitions and be devastating for sports’ finances.
“At various points Labour have tried to disrupt sport continuing through covid, whereas the government has done everything it can to keep it going safely”.

Qatar are due to host the tournament in 2022

A Labour spokesman said: “Labour’s proposals outlined do include scope for exemptions, we have asked the Government to provide all of the basis or the decisions around exemptions.
“Every effort should be made to allow elite international sport to continue, through quarantine exemption, although the key priority has to be against importing a strain of the virus that is resistant to the vaccine.”
The Premier League declined to comment.

Rio Ferdinand thought England football team would be killed on scary World Cup flight as stars wept and prayed

FORMER England captain Rio Ferdinand has revealed he once feared the Three Lions team would be wiped out during a terrifying World Cup flight.
The ex-Man U, 42, defender has told how players including Wayne Rooney and Steven Gerrard were crying and praying for their lives as their plane hit severe turbulence.

The drama followed our elimination from the 2006 World Cup in Germany and has never before been revealed.
Opening up for the first time, Rio said: “We’d just been knocked out of the competition by Portugal in the quarter finals and we had the worst flight back you can imagine. We got caught up in some terrible weather and everybody thought we were going to crash. We were all crying.
“I was sat near Wayne Rooney and Steven Gerrard and their wives and everyone was screaming. It was turbulence on another level. It was mental and people and luggage were all over the place and no one knew what was going on.
“I definitely thought, ‘This is it,’ especially when I looked at the air stewardesses. You can always gauge how serious things are by their expressions and I looked at them and they were all sat down in their seats stony faced and clearly thinking, ‘F***, we’re in trouble.’

“I’m usually quite calm but then I looked at them and I was properly scared.”
If the private jet had crashed it would have wiped out what has been branded a golden generation of footballers that included Rooney, Gerrard, Frank Lampard,  John Terry, and David Beckham.
Famous Wags including Coleen Rooney, and Liverpool star Gerrard’s then girlfriend Alex Curran that had set tongues wagging with their glamorous antics at the Baden-Baden base would also have met a shocking end.
English hopes were high ahead of the 2006 World Cup but the team was eliminated after losing the penalty shoot out with Portugal after the game was tied 0-0 at full time.

Rio, who won 81 caps for his country, believes former Chelsea midfielder Lampard’s toilet habits were another reason the Three Lions were not more successful – as they ruined his sleep.
The widower and father-of-three said: “When I got called up for England I used to share with Frank Lampard.
“He didn’t snore or anything and he was mostly good but the only thing that was a bit of a bummer was that at midnight he would go to the toilet and it was quite loud.

World Cup 2022 odds: Brazil favourites for Qatar glory with France leading Euro side and England out at 9/1

BRAZIL are the early favourites to win the World Cup in 2022, according to the latest odds.

    BETFAIR BET £5 GET £20*
Brazil reached the quarter-finals of the 2018 World Cup in Russia.
But Tite’s men were knocked out following a shock 2-1 defeat to Belgium.
Despite not winning the last tournament, Betfair have them in pole position to lift the trophy in 2022.

France, who beat Croatia 4-2 in the final two years ago, are at 5/1 to defend their title.
Germany are 11/2, Spain are 6/1, Argentina are 8/1 and Belgium are 17/2.
England are next in line with 9/1 odds of going all the way for the first time since 1996.
The Three Lions made it to the semi-finals in Russia in 2018.

But their impressive run came to an end after a defeat to Croatia.

Gareth Southgate’s side have been drawn into Group I for the qualifying campaign.
They will be up against Poland, Hungary, Albania, Andorra and San Marino.
