World Cup could be held every TWO years after Fifa vote to back controversial plans

THE prospect of the World Cup coming every TWO years took a huge step forward after Fifa voted to back the idea.Fifa President Gianni Infantino is a supporter of the concept, which is bitterly opposed by European chiefs.

But a proposal to establish a feasibility study into the idea of holding both the men’s and women’s World Cups on a two-year cycle passed by a substantial margin at the virtual Congress of the 211 member associations.
Saudi Arabia’s proposal was supported by 166 nations, with only 22 opposed and 21 abstaining – Pakistan and Chad are currently suspended by Fifa.
Only the Saudis, backed by Morocco, spoke about the motion, although a smiling Infantino promised: “This will be looked at by the Fifa administration and all stakeholders.”
But Infantino also signaled he will use the study to look at significant changes to the number of international matches played in qualifying campaigns.
Infantino, in his earlier address to the world game, said: “We face challenges and questions about how many matches can a player play per year.

Gareth Southgate fears Euro Super League will hurt his England plans with players facing BANS for playing in rebel comp

GARETH SOUTHGATE is concerned that a breakaway European Super League could ruin his England plans.Uefa have threatened that players from the 12 clubs who signed up to the controversial scheme will be banned from international football.
Gareth Southgate could be without captain Harry Kane and many more at the EurosCredit: Getty
And England boss Southgate has asked FA chiefs to update him – although it is not thought likely that any such ban would come into place until after the Euros this summer.
Around two-thirds of Southgate’s likely 23-man squad play for the Premier League’s ‘big six’ who have all signed up for the Super League – which could see them thrown out of English football.
That would force a series of legal battles as well as the prospect that all players from breakaway clubs would effectively be out of contract, as their current deals are ratified by the Premier League.
They would then have to choose between signing lucrative new deals with Super League sides or opt for clubs within the existing Fifa structure, which would allow them to continue to represent their countries.
Uefa are taking a hard-line approach to the Super League threat and president Aleksander Ceferin said yesterday: “We will take all the sanctions we can and will inform you as soon as we have a clear answer.
“As soon as possible they have to be banned from all our competition and the players from all our competitions.

Here’s how England could line up if European Super League players are banned

    MORE ON SUPER LEAGUE OUTRAGE

“The players who will play in the teams that might play in the closed league will be banned from playing in the World Cup or Euros and not be able to represent their national teams at any matches.”
It is believed Uefa will not allow this summer’s tournament to be so badly damaged.
Should a full breakaway occur, though, most of Southgate’s squad may have a difficult decision to make.
And that eventuality could ruin Southgate’s plans for next year’s Qatar World Cup.
If Southgate were robbed of ‘big six’ players, plus Atletico Madrid’s Kieran Trippier, his team would be significantly weakened.

Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo among best XI of European Super League players who could be BANNED from World Cup

LIONEL MESSI and Cristiano Ronaldo headline the best XI of players in the European Super League who are facing a World Cup ban.Twelve of Europe’s top clubs are leading a ring-fenced, closed-shop breakaway league with no relegation.
This is arguably the best XI of players who as it stands would play in the European Super League

The Premier League’s so-called ‘Big Six’ made up half of the 12 teams already signed up, with a £4.6billion pot backed by JP Morgan.
Real Madrid, Atletico Madrid, Barcelona, Inter Milan, AC Milan and Juventus are the remaining six at this stage.
Uefa and Fifa slammed the proposed plans and suggested the players involved in the ESL could be banned from international football.
That may mean many of the world’s best players are expelled from World Cups and European Championships.
But who would get into the best XI from the 12 ‘founder’ teams of the ESL?
Between the sticks there are plenty of candidates with Marc-Andre ter Stegen, Ederson and Alisson in with a shout but Jan Oblak is arguably the best of the bunch.
The Atletico Madrid and Slovenia stopper has been in fine form since moving to the LaLiga side in 2014.
A back three includes Real Madrid skipper Sergio Ramos, £75million Liverpool hero Virgil van Dijk and Juventus star Matthijs de Ligt.

But there is no room for Ruben Dias, Raphael Varane or Harry Maguire.
An attacking midfield quartet is dominated by the Premier League.
Manchester City pair Kevin De Bruyne and Raheem Sterling are joined by Liverpool’s main man Mo Salah and Manchester United’s current hero Bruno Fernandes.
Messi and Ronaldo – with 11 Ballons d’Or between them – line up in attack in this all-star team… but may end their careers failing to lead their countries to World Cup glory.
And it is Harry Kane who gets the nod as the No9 leading the line, with Romelu Lukaku missing out.

There are, of course, still plenty of top players missing out including French World Cup winners Paul Pogba, N’Golo Kante and Antoine Griezmann.
Rising English stars Phil Foden, Bukayo Saka and Mason Mount join Trent Alexander-Arnold and Marcus Rashford on the sidelines.

Fifa president Gianni Infantino said: “Building on the incredible success of France 2019, the Women’s World Cup 2023 and nine host cities across Australia and New Zealand will not only showcase the world’s very best players but will also provide a powerful platform to unite and inspire people.

The next World Cup will be the first in the competition’s history to see 32 teams battle it out for the most prestigious trophy in women’s football.

Watch Chelsea’s Werner miss SITTER as Germany suffer shock defeat to North Macedonia to lose for first time in 20 YEARS

TIMO WERNER looked more like a flop learner than a top earner as he missed an absolute sitter in Germany’s stunning 2-1 home defeat to North Macedonia. The striker transferred his disappointing first season with Chelsea to the international stage as Germany lost a World Cup qualifier for the first time since England’s 5-1 Munich victory in September 2001.

Joachim Low’s men were sniffing a winner with 10 minutes left when Manchester City midfielder Ilkay Gundogan rolled the ball across for the incoming Werner.
The ex-RB Leipzig hero, on as a sub for Chelsea team-mate Kai Havertz, seemed to get his feet tangled up as he mis-hit a left-footer wide.
Werner stooped down in embarrassment and disbelief, holding his head in his hands.
And it got worse for Germany when Eljif Elmas fired a late clincher for the visitors.
Goran Pandev had put North Macedonia in front on the stroke of half-time, before Gundogan levelled with a 63rd-minute penalty for a foul on ex-club colleague Leroy Sane.
Elsewhere, Barcelona hitman Antoine Griezmann became France’s fourth-highest scorer ever on 35 goals as his bullet header saw off Bosnia 1-0.
Dani Olmo and Ferran Torres scored within three minutes late in the first half of Spain’s 3-1 win over Kosovo.
The visitors pulled one back when Spanish keeper Unai Simon charged up to the halfway line and Besar Halimi netted from 35 yards, but Gerard Moreno then headed Spain’s sealer.

Arsenal hero Thierry Henry hired bodyguard to protect daughter after receiving death threats for Ireland handball goal

THIERRY Henry hired a bodyguard to protect his daughter after facing death threats over his handball goal for France that stopped Ireland going to the 2010 World Cup.The former Arsenal and Barcelona ace admitted he is still ‘not proud’ of the goal and defended it as something that happens in the game, just like Diego Maradona’s infamous Hand of God goal.
Furious Irish fans felt cheated by him handling a ball and setting up the goal in the crucial 2009 play-off game before going on to win 2-1Credit: AFP
But he told for the first time how he feared for his family, especially model ex-wife Nicole Merry and their daughter Tea, 15, who was four at the time.
Furious Irish fans felt cheated by him handling a ball and setting up the goal in the crucial 2009 play-off game before going on to win 2-1.
Thierry, 43, said: “Am I proud of it? No. Do I get abused by the Irish fans sometimes? Yes I do.
“And it’s hard to take because this is not the type of player I am but when you have a bad instinct or reaction, it’s difficult to explain.
“I can’t explain it because it happens, but this is where it becomes difficult.
“And I’m not saying that for people to say, ‘Oh my God’. No.
“But then after that, the abuse that I got – I received letters, death threats, my daughter had to go to school with a bodyguard for two weeks because I was scared: ‘We know where you live.’
Henry pictured with his daughter at a football gameCredit: News Group Newspapers Ltd
“I was in Barcelona, don’t get me wrong. But my daughter was still here (in England).
“And I’m not trying to make it sound better than what it is because it happened.
“But the impact that it has on your family sometimes, this is where it becomes difficult.
“Because on something that I didn’t think about doing, it was an instinct reaction, a bad instinct reaction that players do often when they are in and around the ball.
“You extend your arm and it comes out – I’m not saying it is right at all – but it comes out.
Thierry Henry has said he got a bodyguard to protect his daughter after death threats were madeCredit: Getty Images – Getty
“But after? I’ll be honest with you, it was hard.
“It was hard because you’re receiving stuff like that at my ex-wife and because I got scared I put a bodyguard for my daughter – I never shared that, but you know, I’m sharing it now.
“Understand me well – please, understand me well – I’m not saying this to make what happened better or not better, it has nothing to do with anything.
“But that was hard. This is the stuff that people sometimes don’t understand, you don’t want to receive death threats.
“You don’t want to receive whatever – you don’t want your daughter to be targeted. You don’t want that.”
    TRAPATTONI’S REFUSAL
At the time, then-Irish boss Giovanni Trapattoni refused to label Thierry Henry a cheat despite the France captain admitting to the Republic of Ireland’s players that he had handled the ball in the build-up to the goal.
But defender Richard Dunne had complained: “The World Cup is run by people who want to decide who gets there.
“Big teams get big decisions. The referee says he was 100 per cent certain that Henry didn’t handball it but Henry said [to me] that he did.
“He said that he handballed it but he didn’t mean it and we deserved to win.
“It is there for all to see but that’s not going to change anything. It’s not a difficult one to see. The linesman was in line with it.
“We deserved to win. We could have got a couple of goals but theirs knocked the stuffing out of us.”

    HANDBALL
Henry handled twice after appearing to be in an offside position at the free-kick that led to the incident from which he squared for William Gallas to score France’s extra-time goal, which gave them a 2-1 aggregate win and took them to the finals in South Africa.
Afterwards, Henry said: “I am not the ref. The ball hit my hand and, I will be honest, the ball hit my hand. It was a handball.
“What did I say to Richard Dunne? I told him. And he told me the same, you are not the ref.
“That’s why the Irish players didn’t run to me, they ran to the ref.
“You can clearly see the opportunity. [Sébastien] Squillaci went to jump with two Irish players and then the next thing I know, the ball hit my arm, I played it, and the ref allowed it.
“It could have been better to do it in another way but like I said, I am not the ref.”
Looking back on the incident more than a decade later, Henry told ex-Liverpool star Robbie Fowler on his podcast that it was a life-changing moment.
But he defended it as something that happens in the game and claimed that while Lionel Messi was praised for a similar goal, he was seen as “the Devil”.

    ‘SHAPES YOU’
He said: “I think you go through a moment in life that shapes you.You can’t go back and say, ‘I would have done this.’ I would have been the same person.
“It is what it is and I said it at the time. Remember Stephane Henchoz holding the ball on the line when we played in the final (the 2001 FA Cup final between Liverpool and Arsenal).
“They got a goal kick and Henchoz put his arm out to save the ball.“That’s what you do as a player, sorry, you have that bad reaction, that bad moment where you extend your arm.
“I did not think about it – it happened.
“Was I proud of it? No I wasn’t proud of it – it happened.
“The referee didn’t blow the whistle. I wasn’t proud of it. I’m still not proud of it.
“But things happen in the game, like I said we lost the FA Cup final against Liverpool that night, nobody remembers that Henchoz handballed the ball on the line, pretended to go with his head and pushed it with his hand.
“I didn’t hear anyone crying for Arsenal at the end of the game. Liverpool scored two goals at the end with Michael Owen and I didn’t hear a peep about the handball of Henchoz.
The Irish Sun’s front page following the infamous handball goalCredit: News Group Newspapers Ltd
“Regardless of what happened, it is what it is – it’s just something that happened in the game.
“It’s a game of football and this is when a game of football goes really far.
“After with all the abuse that I got – whether I deserved it or I didn’t deserve it – it’s still something that happened on the football pitch.
“Maradona. Lionel Messi scored a goal like that against Espanyol for Barcelona with his hand. He scored it. I didn’t hear anyone killing Lionel Messi.
“Anyway, it happened to me. I had to take it. I took it. But was I proud of it? No.

“I nearly didn’t even go to the World Cup because a lot of stuff happened, it became a political problem.
“Ministers and Prime Ministers talking about it, the President talking about it.
“When Messi scored his goal they were like, ‘Oh my God, he’s getting closer to Maradona, what a genius.’ I was the Devil.”

Wales 1 Czech Republic 0: Dan James heads winner to boost hopes of qualifying for World Cup in fiery clash

DAN JAMES nodded in the late winner to leave the 10-man Czechs as Schick as a parrot. The visitors were completely in charge of the game until the red card for their striker Patrik Schick early in the second half.

Connor Roberts had also seen red for the Dragons by the time James popped up to seal a huge win.
Gareth Bale atoned for a disappointing first half miss by swinging over a delicious cross from the left wing.
And Manchester United’s James climbed highest to power a header into the ground and past the dive of Tomas Vaclik.
It was the perfect tonic for the Dragons to take into this summer’s Euros after a nightmare few months for the FA Wales.
And whatever happens in the summer, they will resume the qualifiers in September with genuine hope of reaching next year’s World Cup.
Czech defender Ondrej Kudela – accused of racially abusing Rangers’ Glen Kamara earlier this month – started the game at centre back.
And during the warm up, Wales players wore T-shirts with the Show Racism the Red Card slogan on the front.
It was also noticeable that the visitors did not take a knee after the whistle was blown before the match.

Instead their players – including Kudela – had pointed to the UEFA respect badges on the sleeve of their shirt.
Once the game started though, it was clear the visitors were in the mood – buoyed by their draw with group favourites Belgium at the weekend.
After a neat passing move, Jakub Jankto curled a shot just wide from the edge of the box.
The Sampdoria ace got in again soon afterwards after some indecision in the Wales area but blasted his shot into the side netting.
While clear cut chances were at a premium, the Czechs were dominating possession and nullifying the Dragons.
Robert Page’s men were having to work hard to stay in the game although when they did get a chance it was a huge one.
Neco Williams did superbly to find space on the left and whip over a cross.
Skipper Bale arrived at the back post but his volley into the turf bounced up and was tipped over by Tomas Vaclik.

It was nearly a frustrating night for Gareth Bale and CoCredit: PA
The on loan Tottenham man has done it for his country so many times – he would have expected to score from there.
His last goal for his country was back in October 2019. By his high standards that’s a long time.
Back at the other end, Jankto was the provider as he played in Patrik Schick but his shot was deflected into the hands of Danny Ward.
Wales were starting to at least cause the Czech some problems and Dan James burst into the box before going down under a challenge from Tomas Soucek.
Replays showed the West Ham man just got a nick on the ball first so it was a correct call by the Romanian ref not to give the penalty.
Having lost their first qualifier in Belgium last week, they were in real danger of slipping right off the pace.
However within three minutes of the re-start, Wales were given an unexpected boost when the visitors were reduced to 10 men.
Schick and Connor Roberts wrestled each other as a free-kick was lobbed into the Welsh box and the Bayer Leverkusen man appeared to swing an arm.

Bale, 31, delivered a superb assistCredit: PA
Once Ward had collected the ball, Schick stuck his hands into the face of Roberts.
It was fair to say the Swansea man made the most of it – and it was hard not to feel some sympathy for the Czech forward.
Having booted plenty of hopeful balls forward, Page threw on his giant forward Kieffer Moore as Wales suddenly had the upper hand.
The Cardiff man got in behind the Czech defence straight away but Bale saw his shot blocked.
Yet the visitors were still looking dangerous as Lukas Provod skipped around ward only for a timely challenge by James Lawrence to deny him.
The Czechs wanted a penalty when the same two players collided in the box but again there was nothing in it.
Then Vladimir Darida tried his luck from 25 yards but his effort dipped just over the bar.
Another Hammers man Vladimir Coufal nearly got in at the back post but was denied by some superb defending by James.
United star James provided the match winning momentCredit: Getty
The extra man advantage had not done the Dragons much good for almost half an hour – and the numbers were levelled up on 77 minutes.
Roberts had been booked for his role in the sending off of Schick and led with an arm in a challenge with Soucek
Again it looked very harsh but there would have been nobody on the Czech side feeling sorry for him.
Bale slipped a pass through to James who tried to go round Vaclik who did well to get in the way.
However the same combination linked up to get the winner nine minutes from time.
And in injury time another Spurs man Joe Rodon did his bit at the other end to deny Ondrej Celustka with a superb block.
You could tell at the end of the game how much this means to Wales going into a huge few months for them.

Gareth Bale reveals he does suffer from lack of confidence after early season struggles at Tottenham

GARETH BALE admits that he DOES suffer from a lack of confidence. The Wales captain has had a mixed season at Tottenham, with form and fitness issues under boss Jose Mourinho.
Bale trains ahead of tonight’s game against the Czech RepublicCredit: PA
Even though superstar Bale won trophies galore at Real Madrid,  former Spurs boss and SunSport columnist Harry Redknapp said recently that the Welsh legend is really a confidence player — and the 31-year-old certainly agrees.
Bale has an eye on this summer’s Euros but he reckons he has finally reclaimed his form and speed.
Wales gained  a major lift from a 1-0 friendly win over Mexico on Saturday and Bale’s admission that he is finally back in the groove should worry the Czech Republic ahead of tonight’s  2022 World Cup qualifier in Cardiff.
Bale – who has ten goals in 25 games for Spurs so far this season – explained: “Confidence is a massive thing in football.
“Whether you are the best player or the worst, having confidence as a footballer — especially for me — is one of the most important things.
“Playing in the final third you need to take risks. You really need to feel good about yourself and to be able to beat a defender, shoot and score goals.
“I’m building my confidence up slowly which has been good — and that has shown in my performances and with scoring goals.
“I  need to keep improving, keep putting in good performances. And then hopefully they can keep on getting better and better to lead into the Euros.”

Bale has shown signs of his old self in the last six weeks — after overcoming a  knee injury on his arrival to Spurs in September.
When asked to assess his own season, Bale added: “It’s been OK. I had a slow start, I came into Tottenham with a little problem in my knee, not having played football continuously for a year and a half, so it took a bit of time to get going.
“The last couple of months I’ve felt stronger and stronger, my form and speed has been there and I’ve scored some goals.”

After an opening Group E defeat to Belgium last Wednesday, Wales must now register points against the Czechs to keep their dream of reaching the Qatar finals alive.
And Bale, set to win his 90th cap, hinted that this could be his last campaign before he retires.
He will be 33 when the 2022 finals come around and, after seeing Chris Gunter become the first Welsh star to reach a ton of caps at the weekend, he admits his international career is drawing to a close.
Bale, who has revealed he will have talks with Real about his future after the Euros, said: “There’s no hiding we are getting older — and possibly it is the last campaign.
“If it is, then it won’t change my mindset. I’m going to be 100 per cent committed like always.”
