England manager Gareth Southgate refuses to discuss Qatar World Cup with contract running down after Euros heartbreak

GARETH SOUTHGATE refused to be drawn on England’s World Cup chances in the aftermath of Sunday’s Euros defeat. The Three Lions boss saw his side fall agonisingly short of delivering a first ever Euros win as they lost on penalties to Italy.

England were playing only their second ever major final and first since the 1966 World Cup final 55 years ago.
Southgate led the Three Lions to the World Cup semi-finals three years ago and went one step further this time.
He is expected to sign a new contract as England manager after the tournament to stay until the next Euros in 2024.
His current £3.5m-a-year deal is due to expire after next year’s World Cup in Qatar.
But the Three Lions manager was in no mood to look ahead to the winter World Cup right after seeing his side lose on penalties.
When asked about the World Cup, he said: “That feels a million miles away. For certain this team can be better and can improve.
“You have seen the young players we have blooded in this tournament and been absolutely fantastic.
“The players have been incredible to work with and tonight is going to be extremely difficult of course and you have to feel that disappointment because the opportunities to win trophies like this are so rare in your life.

“But when they reflect what they have done they should be incredibly proud of themselves.”
Southgate took the blame for England’s penalty nightmare as three players missed their spot-kicks.
Jadon Sancho and Marcus Rashford were brought on in the dying moments of extra-time to take penalties.
But both of them failed to convert, as did 19-year-old Arsenal prospect Bukayo Saka.

Southgate said: “It was down to me. I decide on the penalty takers from what we have done in training and nobody is on their own.
“We have won together as a team and it is on all of us for nothing being able to win the game tonight.
“In terms of the penalties it is my call and it totally rests with me. We were well prepared but unfortunately the guys weren’t able to convert tonight.
“They can’t look at themselves in terms of how they practiced because they could not have done any more or any better.”

England’s 1966 World Cup stars as rich as Kane and Co? No, their lives were much Moore modest

WHEN, God-willing, England lift the Euro trophy tomorrow, the heroes who ended 55 years of hurt are assured fame and fortune.Five decades may have passed, but the players who won the World Cup in 1966 seem to have been living on another planet.

Agents for Harry Kane and his team will long ago have negotiated eye-watering bonuses from bosses at the English FA for taking the honours at Wembley tomorrow night.
But in 1966, in the bowels of the famous London stadium while the rest of the team were recovering after their 4-2 extra-time win over Germany, team captain Bobby Moore slipped out of the dressing room.
He went to meet FA chiefs who told him — with no negotiations back then — that the players would share a total bonus of £22,000.
Moore decided each man would get £1,000, whether they had played in the tournament or not. He told his teammates: “We were all in this together and that’s how it will stay.”

While our present-day England stars earn millions, have lucrative sponsorship deals and live in gated mansions, things were very different back in 1966.
    ‘Players of the people’
Then, they were on around 80 quid a week — and felt LUCKY. Because only four years earlier the £20-a-week cap on players’ wages had been lifted — and they were now earning five times the average worker’s pay.
The team’s youngest member, winger Alan Ball, was one of the few players with a kit deal.
    Bobby Moore vs Harry Kane
MOORE: Aged 22 (died 1993). Pay:  £80 a week. Home: £3,000  semi in Chingford, Essex. Car: Jaguar. Family: Divorced wife Tina in 1986 after 22 years, two kids. Honours: OBE.
KANE: Aged 27. Pay: £180k a week – likely to rise to £300k.  Home: Rented London apartment for £15,000 a week. Car: Range Rover, Jaguar, Bentley. Family:  Married to childhood sweetheart Kate Goodland, three kids. Honours:  MBE  – but knighthood if we win.

At 9.30 on the morning of the ’66 game, he went to see an Adidas rep staying at the team hotel.
Ball, who only 45 minutes earlier had learned he was playing, collected £1,000 —  enough for a new car —  for wearing Adidas boots in the game.
Centre back Jack Charlton, on the other hand, got just £100 from his bootmaker. The FA had done a  deal with Marks & Spencer and the team travelled to the game in St Michael suits.
In ’66 Arthur Edwards was a young photographer on the local East London paper and took pictures of Moore and World Cup final goal scorers Geoff Hurst and Martin Peters. Arthur, now The Sun’s royal photographer recalls: “They’d invite me to their homes to take pictures and never asked for a penny and there was no agents making demands.
“It was a different world back then. They were players of the people.”
Hurst was living in a £3,000 semi in Chigwell and returned home to wife Judith after England’s victory — and mowed the lawn.
Moore’s wife Tina recalled: “After the match, we went back to our semi in Essex and held a party for some of our close friends. It wasn’t anything fancy, just a few drinks and a bit of music for a couple of hours.
    Gordon Banks vs Jordan Pickford
BANKS: Aged 28 (died 2019). Pay: £60 a week with Leicester, plus gate money. Home: £3,000 1930s  semi. Car: Ford Consul. Family: Wife Ursula, a West German who supported England, three kids. Honours: OBE.
PICKFORD: Aged 27. Pay: £150,000 a week at Everton. Home: £2.1million  mansion in Cheshire. Car: £160,000 Lamborghini Urus 4×4. Family: Wife Megan Davison, one son. Honours: None.

“After everyone left, it all felt a bit flat. Bobby poured himself a lager while I cleared away the glasses.
“I suppose Bobby and I did start to experience some things similar to footballers and their wives nowadays.
“After the World Cup, people wanted to take photos of us, and we had offers coming in from every direction.
“We got a telegram from composer Lionel Bart, inviting us to a party with Tom Jones and Joan Collins.
“Bobby got a contract modelling for Hornes Brothers, a men’s outfitters. He bought us a Jaguar — a car he had always longed for — and we had the house of our dreams built on a plot of land on the best street in Chigwell.”
Hurst, who was later knighted, also bought a bigger house — for £12,750. Liverpool striker Roger Hunt returned to his home in Culcheth, near Warrington, to find his lawn had been trampled by 600 fans chanting ‘Eey aye adio, we won the Cup!’
    Geoff Hurst vs Declan Rice
HURST: Aged 24 (now 79). Pay: £80 a week at West Ham. Home: £3,000 three-bed semi in Chingford. Car: Ford Anglia. Family: Married Judith in 1964, three daughters. Honours: Knighted in 1998.
RICE: Aged 22. Pay: £60,000 a week at West Ham. Expected to double after Euros. House: Mansion in Surrey. Car: Range Rover. Family: Girlfriend Lauren Fryer, no kids. Honours: None.

In 1966, Bobby Charlton also lived in Cheshire, in a modest detached home in Knutsford.
Today’s team are staying at England’s posh St George’s training facilities at Burton on Trent with its pools, gyms and even an oxygen chamber. A huge staff including chefs and nutritionists tend to their needs.
In July 1966, England’s squad plus two coaches and manager Alf Ramsey, stayed at the Hendon Hall Hotel, where the team ate the same menu as the other guests. For lunch before the final, the players had chicken, apart from Moore who had beans on toast.
To relax, they went shopping and played cards and cricket or sunbathed in the grounds.
There was no ring of steel around the players, like today.
    Wags ate burgers
Back then fans could stop and chat to them in the grounds, or hail them in the streets nearby while they went shopping.
The players’ wives had to stay at home and wait for their husbands or boyfriends to phone after training.
Fulham full-back George Cohen’s wife Daphne was left at home with their baby  Andrew for eight weeks while England trained for the tournament. She recalled: “I couldn’t call George at the team hotel — I didn’t even know the number.
“I had to write letters and wait for him to call. Alf Ramsey made it clear wives should keep away.”
The night before the big match, Ramsey took his team to the local cinema in Hendon to see the film Those Magnificent Men In Their Flying Machines.
    Alf Ramsay vs Gareth Southgate
RAMSEY: Aged 46 (died 1999). Pay: £4,500 a year. Home: Mock Tudor semi in Ipswich. Car: Austin 1100. Family: Married to Rita Norris, one dachshund. Honours: Knighthood, statues at Ipswich and Wembley.
SOUTHGATE: Aged 50. Pay: £3million a year. Home: £3.5m haunted 16th Century mansion near Harrogate. Cars: Bentley and Aston Martin. Family: Married to Alison, two girls. Honours: OBE – but Sir Gareth if we win.

On the day of the match the wives, who were given two tickets each, had to make their own way to Wembley.
Pat Wilson, wife of left-back Ray, left their two children with her mum in Liverpool to drive to London for the final.
She said: “I picked up Bobby Charlton’s wife Norma on the way, but halfway down the motorway the exhaust went on our Ford Zephyr.”
Following the victory, the team were whisked to a banquet at the Royal Garden Hotel in Kensington. Their wives and girlfriends made their own way there to discover they were not allowed in — although Pickles, the dog that found the stolen World Cup trophy four months earlier, was.

Instead, they ate burgers in a restaurant downstairs.
Daphne Cohen, who had hitched a lift to Wembley said: “I remember passing the banqueting suites and feeling a little fed up that we didn’t even get a ticket for the tearoom.”
But the FA did thank the Wags for their sacrifice during the tournament —  presenting each with a pair of scissors in a box.

Boris Johnson makes World Cup 2030 bid to bring football home to UK and Ireland

BORIS Johnson has been lobbying to bring a World Cup home ahead of England’s semi-final clash with the Danes today. The Prime Minister has wished Gareth Southgate’s team the “best of luck” in getting to the Euro 2020 final as he stepped up his efforts to get a home soil World Cup.

Mr Johnson lobbied for a joint British and Irish based competition during a meeting at No 10 with the president of Uefa, Aleksander Ceferin on Tuesday.
But wishing the Three Lions luck tonight, the PM said: “Gareth Southgate and the England squad have done the nation proud in the Euros, and tonight we will all be wishing them the best of luck in getting to the final. Bring it home!”
Previously Cerefin, whose support is vital to the winning country, has stated that he would want a single European candidate for the 2030 World Cup so that the vote is not split.
In January Boris pledged that he would pump £2.8m towards a joint bid, adding that it was the “right time” to “bring football home”.
In an exclusive interview with The Sun in March, the Prime Minister said: “We are very, very keen to bring football home in 2030. I do think it’s the right place.
“It’s the home of football, it’s the right time. It will be an absolutely wonderful thing for the country.”

Mr Johnson hopes the image of plucky Brexit Britain, fresh from its vaccine success, hosting the European tournament this summer would be a great advert for the UK’s 2030 bid.
And he hopes it will encourage us all to play more sport so the country can “build back fitter” from Covid.
Britain and Ireland’s main competition is Spain and Portugal, who launched their own official bid last week.
After two failed attempts to host the tournament, the joint bid is thought to be more likely to get the contest on home soil.
The Chinese had also reportedly been planning a strong counterbid, but reports suggest that they are likely to back down.
The decision to allow up to 2,500 Uefa VIPs quarantine exemptions to attend the semi-finals and final at Wembley has been regarded as helpful in securing support.

The bid comes ahead of England’s biggest game on home soil in 25 years, with the Duke of Cambridge attending tonight’s match.
Southgate’s squad will have to battle with the pressure of performing on the big stage at Wembley – the biggest since losing the semi-final of Euro ’96 to Germany on penalties.
A source also said that the Prince of Wales and Duchess of Cornwall would be “closely following the outcome”.

Gareth Bale ‘planning to RETIRE from club football but 31-year-old wants to play for Wales at World Cup 2022 still’

GARETH BALE is reportedly planning to retire from club football when his Real Madrid contract runs out next year. But it has been claimed that the ex-Tottenham winger, who turns 32 next week, is still keen to keep playing for Wales.

According to the Mirror, the former Southampton man is open to playing for Wales at the World Cup in Qatar in 2022 should they qualify for the tournament that starts in November.
They also state that Bale has no intention of playing for another team once his £600,000-a-week deal comes to an end in Spain.
He is said to have told family and friends that Los Blancos will be the last club he competes for.
With former boss Carlo Ancelotti back in the dugout at Real, Bale believes he will be given more first-team opportunities.
Bale was frozen out under Zinedine Zidane, resulting in him returning to Tottenham on loan for the 2020-21 campaign.
He showed flashes of brilliance as he chipped in with 16 goals in 34 games, with 11 of his strikes coming from 20 Premier League outings.
The forward was asked about his international future following Wales’ Euro 2020 exit at the hands of Denmark.
After being asked whether it would be his last game, Bale stormed off from his TV interview where he refused to answer the question.

Following criticism from fans for how he reacted, Bale later vowed to carry on playing for Wales until he stops playing football.
He told Welsh TV channel S4C: “I want to continue to play.
“People ask stupid questions all the time, but obviously I love playing for Wales.
“I’ll play for Wales until the day that I stop playing football.”
Wales, who haven’t featured in a World Cup since 1958, have three points from their opening two qualifying games in Group E.
They face Belarus and Estonia in their next two games before pitting their wits against Czech Republic.

Didier Deschamps to continue as France manager until at least 2022 World Cup despite shock Euro 2020 flop

And he could remain at the helm for even longer as the French do a bit of soul searching following Monday’s defeat to Switzerland.
Despite falling behind, the world champions were 3-1 up with ten minutes to go.
But Switzerland managed to score twice to send the game to extra time, before an additional stalemate resulted in penalties.
With Switzerland 5-4 up, it was on star man Kylian Mbappe to keep the French dream alive.
However, the PSG ace fluffed his effort, resulting in France crashing out of the tournament despite being strong favourites.
It has now been claimed that a bitter squad division emerged before a ball was even kicked.
L’Equipe says Mbappe and Olivier Giroud fell out.
And a number of others were fed up with Mbappe’s ‘sulking’ attitude around the camp.

While 1998 World Cup winner Emmanuel Petit took aim at Paul Pogba, claiming the Man Utd star ‘lost the plot’.
But Deschamps will get the opportunity to repair his damaged national side, who stormed to World Cup glory in Russia just three years ago.
And with 18 months to go until Qatar 2022, there is plenty of time for reflection across the Channel.

England line up bid to host 2030 World Cup and European Super League farce could help bring it home

FA chief executive Mark Bullingham believes that the European Super League farce could help England secure hosting the World Cup in 2030.The 50-year-old footie supremo is hoping Uefa back England and Ireland’s submission to bring the game’s biggest competition home for the first time since 1966.

And with Spain and Portugal looking to co-host the tournament, Bullingham is hoping Uefa fails to back their proposal.
All six English clubs involved in the European Super League proposal pulled out following fan pressure.
And they all agreed to massive fines from Uefa should they be involved in another future plot.
Meanwhile Real Madrid and Barcelona are yet to withdraw from the hated competition.
Uefa may have halted disciplinary proceedings into the clubs, but Bullingham is hoping their poor relations prove to be a stumbling block over a World Cup held on the Iberian Peninsula.
England on the other hand boast good relations with Uefa following the government’s decision to allow 60,000 fans to attend the Euro 2020 semi-finals and final at Wembley.
Uefa will back only one European bid with its 55 member-nation votes and the FA is overseeing a feasibility study about whether to throw its hat in the ring.
Confirming England’s bid, Bullingham said: “I think we have got lots of credit from lots of different parts of football from around the world for the way in which the European Super League ended.
BETTING SPECIAL: GET ENGLAND TO BEAT GERMANY AT 14/1
FA chief Mark Bullingham is hoping all six English clubs pulling out from the European Super League improves their chances of Uefa backing their bidCredit: News Group Newspapers Ltd

“And that’s great and we were a key part of that and we’re proud of the role we played.
“I think overall our relationship with Uefa, not just from from a Government point of view, but from an FA point of view is massively important.”
Before adding: “We’re doing a feasibility study at the moment to ascertain what would a bid look like, what’s the governance of it and, fundamentally, can we win it?
“I think our fundamental question is can we win it, have we got a genuine chance?
“I think all of us would like to host a World Cup here. It would have a massive impact on everything we’re trying to achieve, from grassroots participation to impact on our own finances.
“It would be great. But we’re only going to bid if we can win.”

England legend Rio Ferdinand believed Three Lions team would be killed on World Cup flight as stars wept and prayed

FORMER England captain Rio Ferdinand has revealed he once feared the Three Lions team would be wiped out during a terrifying World Cup flight. The ex-Man U, 42, defender has told how players including Wayne Rooney and Steven Gerrard were crying and praying for their lives as their plane hit severe turbulence.

The drama followed our elimination from the 2006 World Cup in Germany and has never before been revealed.
Opening up for the first time, Rio said: “We’d just been knocked out of the competition by Portugal in the quarter finals and we had the worst flight back you can imagine. We got caught up in some terrible weather and everybody thought we were going to crash. We were all crying.
“I was sat near Wayne Rooney and Steven Gerrard and their wives and everyone was screaming. It was turbulence on another level. It was mental and people and luggage were all over the place and no one knew what was going on.
“I definitely thought, ‘This is it,’ especially when I looked at the air stewardesses. You can always gauge how serious things are by their expressions and I looked at them and they were all sat down in their seats stony faced and clearly thinking, ‘F***, we’re in trouble.’

“I’m usually quite calm but then I looked at them and I was properly scared.”
If the private jet had crashed it would have wiped out what has been branded a golden generation of footballers that included Rooney, Gerrard, Frank Lampard,  John Terry, and David Beckham.
Famous Wags including Coleen Rooney, and Liverpool star Gerrard’s then girlfriend Alex Curran that had set tongues wagging with their glamorous antics at the Baden-Baden base would also have met a shocking end.
English hopes were high ahead of the 2006 World Cup but the team was eliminated after losing the penalty shoot out with Portugal after the game was tied 0-0 at full time.

Rio, who won 81 caps for his country, believes former Chelsea midfielder Lampard’s toilet habits were another reason the Three Lions were not more successful – as they ruined his sleep.
The widower and father-of-three said: “When I got called up for England I used to share with Frank Lampard.
“He didn’t snore or anything and he was mostly good but the only thing that was a bit of a bummer was that at midnight he would go to the toilet and it was quite loud.
“In fact it was really loud. So loud that it used to wake me up. This long, loud p*ss.”

Chelsea star N’Golo Kante one of six players to have won Champions League, Prem and World Cup… can you guess others?

CHELSEA midfielder N’Golo Kante has become one of SIX players to win the Champions League, Premier League and World Cup.The French midfielder played brilliantly in the Blues’ 1-0 win against Manchester City last night to join the exclusive club.
N’Golo Kante, 30, was part of the France squad that won the World Cup in 2018Credit: AFP
Since the old First Division and European Cup were both re-branded into the Premier League and Champions League in 1992, only half-a-dozen players have won both competitions and the World Cup.
Kante joined Fabien Barthez, Thierry Henry, Juliano Belletti, Gerard Pique and Pedro in that club with his man of the match performance against Pep Guardiola’s side.
Other players had achieved the feat before 1992, most notably Manchester United legends Bobby Charlton and Nobby Stiles – part of the England team that won the World Cup in 1966.
    Fabien Barthez
Barthez endured an indifferent time at Manchester United as he struggled to meet the standard set by predecessor Peter Schmeichel – but he still won two Premier League titles.
That achievement came a decade after he and his Marseille team-mates became the first ever winners of the re-branded Champions League, beating AC Milan 1-0 in the final.
And he was in goal for France when they hammered Brazil 3-0 in the 1998 World Cup final – a game remembered for Ronaldo suffering a seizure the day before.

    Theirry Henry
Henry became a hero in North London when he inspired Arsenal to two Premier League titles, including their ‘invincible’ triumph in 2004.
The forward, who was part of France’s squad in 1998, thought his Champions League opportunity had gone when the Gunners lost to Barcelona in the 2006 final.
But Henry, who moved to Barca a year later, realised his dream when Guairdola’s side defeated Manchester United 2-0 in the 2009 final in Rome.
    Juliano Belletti
Henry’s anguish was Belletti’s joy as the Barca star scored the winning goal in the 2006 final to break Arsenal hearts.
Belletti had already won the World Cup by this stage, sitting on the Bench as Cafu’s understudy in Brazil’s victory against Germany in 2002.
He then picked up a Prem medal by making 11 appearances for Chelsea in the 2009-10 title-winning campaign.

    Gerard Pique
Pique was in the right place at the right time when he became a Premier League AND Champions League with Manchester United in 2007-08.
The Spanish legend made just 13 appearances in all competitions that season before beating Alex Ferguson’s side 12 months later as a Barca player in Rome.
His transformation from Old Trafford reserve to World Cup winner was complete in 2010 when he inspired Spain to victory against Holland in South Africa.
    Pedro
Pique’s Spain team-mate Pedro was also in the squad for their 2010 triumph and won three Champions League titles at Barcelona before deciding it was time for a new challenge in 2015.
The talented winger joined Chelsea and, at first, it seemed a horrible decision as they finished 10th in the Premier League in his first season at the club.
But Pedro was vindicated when Kante arrived at Stamford Bridge, going on to win the 2016-17 title with ease.
    N’Golo Kante
Champions League winner Kante became a household name when he inspired Leicester City to a shock Premier League title in 2015-16.
He repeated the feat at Chelsea 12 months later and has gone on to win the FA Cup, Europa League and the big one at Stamford Bridge.
Kante’s efforts at club level saw him rewarded with a spot in the France team, helping his nation beat Croatia 4-2 in the 2018 World Cup final.
