Ronaldo has once again been the centre of media attention in the Portugal camp.
He was blasted by boss Fernando Santos after sulking when he was substituted in the 2-1 defeat to South Korea.
He then made headlines again without even playing as he was dropped for Portugal’s Last 16 clash against Switzerland.
However, Santos’ decision turned out to be an inspired one as Portugal ran out 6-1 winners with rookie Goncalo Ramos netting a hat-trick.

Evra names two England stars who will struggle against Mbappe and reveals prediction for World Cup clash vs France

HARRY MAGUIRE and John Stones will find it nearly impossible to deal with Kylian Mbappe, according to former France left-back Patrice Evra. And the Manchester United legend says Les Bleus have what it takes to “smash” England in Saturday’s World Cup quarter-final.
Harry Maguire has been one of England’s most impressive players in Qatar, but Patrice Evra still believes he could be a weak point against MbappeCredit: Richard Pelham / The Sun
John Stones could have to change tactics against Mbappe with it still undecided if Gareth Southgate will use a back five or a back four
Mbappe is set to go head to head with lightning fast right-back Kyle Walker at the Al Bayt Stadium.
But 81-cap Evra reckons the Paris Saint-Germain superstar will turn his attention to the Three Lions’ centre-back pair if he has no luck out wide.
He said: “Walker is going to block Mbappe, he did it against Neymar very well in the Champions League for Manchester City.
“He can be confident and say he’s got him because he’s fast and strong, but Mbappe will find a way to escape. He will move into the centre.
Read more on the World Cup

“I hope he does because Stones and Maguire won’t be able to deal with him. It will be difficult for them to stop him.
“To stop Mbappe when he’s in the centre, you have to be close to him every time, frustrate him, foul him – he doesn’t like to be fouled.
“Maguire and Stones will love playing against [Olivier] Giroud though, he’s not fast, he’s strong and that is the jackpot for them.”
Evra reckons either team is capable of lifting the trophy next Sunday if they both get past their “biggest test of the tournament”.

But the 41-year-old reckons Didier Deschamps’ side could embarrass England on the biggest stage.
He told Betfair: “I am confident, but not arrogant. I’m happy with what France are doing.
“It’s a big mix. I feel like France are going to smash England.
“France will face an angry, strong team. If they play with the attitude that they are stronger and more confident than England, France can smash them.
“Playing against England is always special as a French player. It’s always an amazing game.
“It’s a nice rivalry, it’s not bitter. We’re jealous of each other in a nice way.”
Despite Evra’s confidence in France’s ability to triumph – especially if “key player” Antoine Griezmann plays well – he warned Les Bleus against underestimating Gareth Southgate’s men.
    Especially “unbelievable” Jude Bellingham.
He added: “With England, the star is the team. It’s not just one player.
“This is the best English side, as a team, not as a group of individuals. England look more of a unit than France.
“But Bellingham will be by far the best midfielder England have ever had.
“What a joy it is to see him play. He is a complete player. It’s scary he’s only 19.”
Although Evra reckons France have it in them to wallop England, he has predicted a much tighter affair.
He predicted: “I can see the game being 2-1 to France. We will score first then England will level.

“Then I can see this being another moment for Mbappe to do Mbappe things in the last 10 minutes. I don’t see it going to extra time or penalties. If it does go to penalties, it’s a risk for France.
“It’s a big game and there’s lots of banter. I really thank England for all those great years, but it’s time for you guys to lose. I’ll be eating snails and singing ‘It’s coming home’, if France win.”

Germany Wags ’caused unrest in World Cup 2022 camp’ as inquest into disastrous campaign begins

WITH Germany suffering a World Cup group stage exit for a second straight tournament, an inquest into their awful campaign took place. It saw Hansi Flick survive as boss – but German reports claim a “holiday feeling” in the camp contributed to the failure.

German FA (DFB) chiefs held a two-and-a-half-hour crisis meeting after crashing out of Group E behind Japan and Spain, according to Bild.
The same outlet reports DFB employees were “amazed” with what they saw at Germany’s plush Zulal Wellness Resort base, which was an hour-and-a-half drive away from Doha.
They booked out more than a quarter of the five-star rooms, and were given permission to invite their Wags to stay at the hotel for two nights ahead of the final group game against Costa Rica.
But that is said to have brought on problems.

Bild claim a number of the Wags spent time taking selfies in the hotel swimming pool – while their partners were left taking care of the children.
It’s suggested not all of the players “liked” the situation that unfolded.
And the “holiday feel” in the hotel, which was 111 kilometres (69 miles) away from Doha, is reported to have contributed to the failure on the pitch.
Flick’s side followed up the visit from their Wags with a 4-2 win over Costa Rica.

But it wasn’t enough to save them from an embarrassing elimination.
The Germans finished two points behind group winners Japan and level on points with Spain, but well behind the 2010 champions on goal difference.
A number of the players’ Wags were seen in the stands cheering on Germany before their premature exit.
Izabel Goulart, the supermodel fiancee of backup goalkeeper Kevin Trapp was seen in the crowd, with Kai Havertz’s partner of four years Sophie Weber also there.
And the reported Wags’ unrest could be one of the reasons DFB bosses concluded Flick remains the best person for the job going forward.
The boss declared after it was announced he was staying on: “My coaching team and I are optimistic about the European Championship in our own country.
“We as a team can achieve much more than we showed in Qatar.
“We have missed a great opportunity there. We will learn our lessons from that.”

Watch Morocco star Boufal make incredible World Cup prediction about his side… but give Portugal reason to be confident

MOROCCO World Cup star Sofiane Boufal confidently predicted the North African country would make the quarter-finals… but it could boost opponent Portugal’s confidence. The ex-Southampton ace, 29, has played a key role in Morocco’s impressive World Cup campaign.
This is wild 🤯 Morocco’s Sofiane Boufal in September: “You’re going to think I’m a crazy person. But if we get past the group stage, and we will Inshallah, we are going to the quarter-finals, we will be the surprise. We will do what Ghana did in 2010.”pic.twitter.com/Q5UIJSGxWp— Get French Football News (@GFFN) December 6, 2022

Boufal predicted that Morocco would make the quarter-finals of the World CupCredit: AP
He has started all four of Morocco’s games so far and helped them top Group F, finishing above runners-up Croatia, and sending Belgium’s golden generation home, as well as Canada.
Morocco then defeated Spain, a country they are separated from by the Strait of Gibraltar, in emphatic fashion in the round of 16.
They beat the World Cup 2010 winners 3-0 on penalties after the two sides couldn’t be separated in 120 minutes of football.
With Boufal’s help, Morocco became the fourth African country to reach this stage of the competition with Cameroon in 1990, Senegal in 2002 and Ghana in 2010 coming before them.

But Morocco’s presence in the last eight of the World Cup has come as NO surprise to Boufal.
The Angers ace predicted Morocco would reach the quarters in a viral video that has resurfaced.
Boufal said in September: “You’re going to think I’m a crazy person.
“But if we get past the group stage, and we will Inshallah, we are going to the quarter-finals, we will be the surprise.

Boufal’s insane prediction could boost quarter-final opponent Portugal’s confidence, though, with the two sides set to do battle on Saturday.
The quarters is where Boufal’s prediction ended.
Should Portugal get past the World Cup’s dark horses, a semi-final date with current holders France or England awaits.
They could then face one of Argentina, Brazil, Holland or Croatia in the final. More

‘A group too united to be broken’ – Cristiano Ronaldo breaks silence on claims he ‘threatened to quit World Cup team’

But he was then left out of Fernando Santos’ XI for the Switzerland game, before his replacement Goncalo Ramos bagged a hat-trick in a 6-1 victory.
On Thursday, Portuguese outlet Record claimed Ronaldo made a threat to leave the World Cup altogether after being benched.
The Portuguese FA categorically denied the reports in a statement.
Now the forward, who is a free agent after leaving Manchester United following his explosive interview with Piers Morgan, has delivered a statement of his own.

Sharing a snap of the squad, including himself as a sub, celebrating a goal from Tuesday, he wrote: “A group too close to be broken by outside forces. A nation too brave to let itself be frightened by any adversary.
“A team in the truest sense of the word, which will fight for the dream until the end! Believe with us! Strength, Portugal!”
Following Ronaldo’s second half substitution in the group stage match with South Korea, the ex-Man Utd forward was reported as telling Santos “you’re in a f*****g hurry to take me away”.
He swiftly refuted those claims by insisting he was actually speaking to a South Korean player who was urging him to leave the field quickly.

He said: “What happened was before my substitution, the South Korea player told me to get off quickly.
“I told him to shut up as he doesn’t have that authority. There was no disagreement [with the coach].”
But Ronaldo could not avoid the fact that he sulked while being taken off, leaving boss Santos unimpressed.
Following Ramos’ hat-trick in the last-16, he is expected to keep his place at the expense of Ronaldo.

Inside tragic stadium where England last played France that’s now shelled and gutted in the middle of a warzone

THE stadium where England last played France in a competitive match just 10 years ago is today in a miserable state, struck by shelling and in the middle of a warzone.Ukraine’s Donbass Arena was the site of four games during the Euro 2012 tournament, but today, it is essentially abandoned, caught up in Russia’s brutal invasion.

That year, the stadium was caught up in fighting with Russian-backed separatists
It suffered severe shelling when Russian-backed forces raised the flag of the DPR
Earlier this year, Russian state media claimed the stadium had been shelled again
It shared footage purportedly showing shell craters outside the arena
The stadium hosted five games at Euro 2012Credit: PA:Press Association
It hosted England’s last competitive game with France, a 1-1 draw on June 11, 2012, during the group stage.
The Three Lions took the lead thanks to a header from Joleon Lescott but were pegged back before halftime thanks to a fine finish from his then-Manchester City teammate Samir Nasri.
And the stadium would also be the sight of another England match eight days later when a single Wayne Rooney goal helped his team to a nervy 1-0 win over hosts Ukraine.
In total, the stadium would be used for five games during the tournament, the final time being the semi-final between Portugal and eventual-winners Spain.

England face France in the first competitive game between the two sides in a decade on Saturday, in the quarter-finals of the World Cup in Qatar.
Completed in 2009, the Donbass Arena was one of eight venues used for Euro 2012, which was jointly hosted by Ukraine and Poland.
With a capacity of just over 52,000, it was the third-largest stadium in the tournament.
It was one of five newly-built stadiums used, costing a total of $400million (£329m in today’s money).

Top firm ArupSport, who also designed Manchester City’s Etihad Arena and Bayern Munich’s Allianz Arena were brought in to create the complex.
With its soaring roof illuminated at night, its design was compared to a flying saucer.
The stadium was also home to local club Shakhtar Donetsk, who won the Europa League in 2009 just months before moving into their new stadium.
Fulham were the first UK team to play at the stadium when they earned a 1-1 draw in the Europa League on February 25, 2010, en-route to the final later that year.

Arsenal were beaten 2-1 at the stadium in a Champions League clash on November 3, 2010, and the team would claim another Premier League scalp in October 2012 when they beat Chelsea 2-1.
The last English side to play at the Donbass Arena was Manchester United, who drew 1-1 on October 2, 2013, in the Champions League.
As well as football, the stadium was used as a concert venue, hosting Beyonce’s first-ever Ukraine concert for its grand opening in 2009.
As a result of shelling, there are numerous damages of the northwestern facade of the stadiumShakhtar Donetsk
But the stadium was dramatically shut in 2014 after fighting broke out between Russian-backed forces and Ukraine in the east of the country.
In August 2014, less than a year after Man Utd played there, the stadium was shelled in the war, damaging its outside.
Pictures and videos showed heavy damage to the turnstiles and entrances to the arena.
The football club’s official Twitter revealed that the stadium was hit by two explosions in the early hours of the morning.
“On 23 August, at 6:00, two powerful explosions occurred at Donbass Arena,” it said.
“As a result of shelling, there are numerous damages of the northwestern facade of the stadium, communications, equipment and detached building of the energy centre, which is located in the northern part of the Donbass Arena park.
“There are no casualties among the stadium staff.”
By this point, the club had already moved out of its home, relocating more than 600 miles west to Lviv, far from the front line.
Fighting between Ukraine and Russian-backed separatists has continued on and off ever since, making it unsafe for Shakhtar to return.
In 2018, the Russian state media agency DAN claimed the turf at the arena had been repaired, quoting the stadium’s technical director Valery Gavrilov at the time.
He also said the official Shakhtar Donetsk museum was being reopened.
With Russia launching an all-out invasion of Ukraine in February this year, the city of Donetsk has seen an upsurge in shelling.
In March, Russian state TV channel Rossiya-1 claimed that the Donbass Arena had been shelled by Ukrainian forces.
The channel claimed without evidence that “dozens of people were injured” in the shelling, and that Kyiv’s forces were “targeting civilian objects” such as the stadium.
It shared footage showing shell craters just metres from the stadium, as well as a number of shattered windows on its outside.
The Donbass Arena has not hosted a game since 2014, when Shakhtar defeated Illichivets Mariupol 3-1 to secure their fifth straight league title, but barely 18,000 turned up due to the looming conflict.
Two days later the flag of the Donetsk People’s Republic was illegally raised over the city and Ukrainian forces responded with shelling.

It isn’t known when if ever the stadium will be used again, with Donetsk being declared part of Russia by Vladimir Putin in September.

And the bullish Bellingham has already sent out a stern warning to France ahead of England’s quarter-final on Saturday.
However, he has scored a major goal away from the turf after answering a public appeal on Twitter.
The classy Borussia Dortmund midfielder has vowed to send a supporter a signed shirt after the individual gave away one he had previously to charity.
Gary Williams had tweeted: “I know this sounds cheeky but does anybody know how I could get one of Judes signed shirts.

Three ways England could line up against France in World Cup quarter-final as Declan Rice faces missing out with illness

ENGLAND could be without midfield lynchpin Declan Rice for their World Cup quarter-final with current holders France. The 38-cap West Ham ace, 23, has been a mainstay in Gareth Southgate’s team since his 2019 debut with only captain Harry Kane playing more times in that three-year period.

Rice is instructed to sit in front of Maguire and Stones and barely ventures past the halfway line
Rice starred in England’s 2021 run to the Euro final and has started all four of England’s World Cup games so far.
The midfielder missed Wednesday’s training through illness, leaving question marks over his participation in Saturday’s quarter-final against Les Bleus.
But in a boost, Rice trained on Thursday.
Rice is seen as one of England’s main defensive firefighters, and would be key in sniffing out danger and extinguishing attacks before they reach Jordan Pickford’s goal.

And his absence would be a massive blow to Southgate and his Three Lions.

England do have adequate cover, though, in Rice’s former midfield partner Kalvin Phillips, who has been replaced by superstar Jude Bellingham, 19.
Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson has also impressed at the World Cup, proving to be a calming figure in the middle of the park.
Should Rice miss Saturday’s clash, Phillips is the most like-for-like replacement.

Fellow defensive firefighter Kyle Walker, who is being talked up as France star Kylian Mbappe’s Kryptonite, has suggested England could stick with a back four.
If Southgate’s sticks with a four, Walker, John Stones, Harry Maguire and Luke Shaw will protect Pickford.
Phillips will come into the midfield and take up Rice’s role of sitting in front of Maguire and Stones.
Both Henderson and Bellingham are bang in-form and would get the nod in this set-up.
Bukayo Saka and Phil Foden have also found their feet on the world stage.
Saka is being talked up as another key component of stopping Mbappe.
The Arsenal’s man’s attacking threat could drag Mbappe back into deeper positions, exploiting his defensive limitations.
Captain Kane will lead the line.
Phillips is a like-for-like replacement for Rice
    Walker could be Mbappe’s Kryptonite
    4-2-3-1
Southgate could go with a double pivot against the French.
Phillips’ defensive superiority over Bellingham and Henderson should see him start, despite limited minutes.
Southgate trusts the Manchester City ace.
Bellingham has lit up the tournament and you’d expect him to start, but it isn’t out of the realms of possibility that Henderson is preferred to partner Phillips.
A midfield two would then allow room for an added attacker.
France’s weaknesses could be down the flanks and you could bring Marcus Rashford into the fold, while allowing Foden to go head-to-head with Aurelien Tchouameni.
A double pivot could see another attacker brought into the fold
    3-4-3
Southgate’s trusted 3-4-3 could also be used, despite the Three Lions lining up with a back four for the tournament so far.
Walker would move into the back three alongside Maguire and Stones.
He’d be tasked with stopping Mbappe, with the help of Kieran Trippier, who is preferred to Liverpool’s Trent Alexander-Arnold.
