Ronaldo was a second half substitute and was unable to save his country from disaster, like he has so many times before.
The Portuguese FA has announced Ronaldo and nine other team-mates, including United duo Fernandes and Dalot, will stay in Qatar.
Other names include Bernardo Silva, Ruben Neves, Rui Patricio, Raphael Guerreiro, Rafael Leao, Joao Cancelo and  Maheus Nunes.
Only 14 players will be returning to the Portuguese capital of Lisbon following their World Cup disappointment.

The tournament was a complete disaster for 37-year-old Ronaldo.
On what could be his final World Cup, he managed just one goal, which came from the penalty spot against Ghana in the group stages.
He also found himself benched by Euro 2016-winning boss Fernando Santos for the knockout stages, and he may well end up without a World Cup knockout goal.
The disaster in the Middle East followed his explosive interview with SunSport columnist and TalkTV main man Piers Morgan.

Ronaldo slammed Man Utd, accusing his then employers of betrayal, while declaring he did not respect manager Erik ten Hag.
The interview pushed Ronaldo beyond the point of return and United ripped up his contract before Portugal’s first group game.
Where he plays his club football next is yet to be decided.

Declan Rice thinks the ‘negativity’ around England will only end when they win something as he backs Southgate to stay

DECLAN RICE reckons the “negativity” surrounding England will only disappear once the Three Lions actually win something.Yet with the next major tournament in Germany just 19 months away, the West Ham midfielder is desperate for Gareth Southgate to stay as manager.

England’s next game is on March 23 and a trip to Naples to face Italy in a Euro2024 qualifier.
Rice said: “We’ve come so far. I think that’s credit to the manager, the spirit that he’s brought to this team and togetherness that we’ve got. Personally, I hope he stays.
“There’s a lot of talk around the manager. I think he’s been brilliant for us. I think there’s a lot of criticism that’s not deserved. I think he’s taken us so, so far. Further than what people expected.
“I really hope he stays because of the core group that we’ve got and what he’s made for us. It’s so special to be a part of, I love playing under him and I love playing for England.

“We weren’t overly-confident over here but we were confident enough that we really could win this tournament and that is not the mentality England have had over the years.
“I think we’ve handled it so well, if you look at the squad we are so young, but we’ve got so many top players.
“We’ve got to a semi-final, Euros final, obviously crashed out here at a quarter-final but in my opinion the better team lost and that shows how far we have come.
“I think sometimes the negativity surrounding us will go away once we have won something again. I think there will always be that pressure on us but I feel like it’s starting to sway that way that we’re getting back to a level where people are believing in us and the country is backing us.

“A few years ago, it wasn’t like that. So we can be really proud of ourselves as a group. But we need to go again because ultimately, international football is based on what you win, we haven’t won for years so that is what we want to try and do.”
Rice, 23, who already has 39 caps, delivered a strong midfield performance against France after a difficult start.
Asked about what Southgate said to the players afterwards, he said: “He was so proud of us as a group because of how we’ve been, how we’ve applied ourselves to the last month and what we’ve given in training sessions. Some of the lads that haven’t even had a minute, every day around the group.
“Against France, he got everything spot on again. It’s not on him. It’s not on him at all – the tactics were right, we played the right way.
“I think you can see on my face right now that I’m distraught because we really believed this year that it could be a year.”
Defender Harry Maguire also backed Southgate to stay.
He said: “Over the last six years, with Gareth in charge, you can really see the development. I know being an England manager is so tough, they get every decision they make scrutinised, every squad they make it is ‘he should be in’ or ‘he shouldn’t be in’.
“Every team he picks it is ‘he should play’ or ‘he shouldn’t play’. That is being an England manager. He knows how to handle it and tactically he gets all the big decisions right and he has proven that again this tournament. Gareth has been amazing with myself. Amazing with every player in the team.

“I know we lost. But it’s probably the best performance we’ve had against a big team. They are the world champions and I feel like they will go on to lift the cup. And if we are being totally honest, we were a lot better than them in a lot of areas.
“This is tournament football and you can only look after the performance. Four years ago against Croatia we didn’t play well enough to progress through to the final. In this game we lost but we did everything right and sometimes this in football, the best team doesn’t win. That is why everyone loves the game.” More

Adrien Rabiot says Harry Kane’s penalty miss was ‘justice’ as France star makes bizarre claim about penalty

FRANCE midfielder Adrien Rabiot has bizarrely claimed “justice” was served when Harry Kane missed his second penalty. The world champions saw off Gareth Southgate’s Three Lions with a 2-1 victory in the World Cup quarter-finals.

Aurelien Tchouameni opened the scoring early on in the first half.
Kane grabbed the equaliser from the penalty spot but Olivier Giroud later restored France’s lead with an expert header.
But with six minutes left on the clock, England were handed the chance to draw level, again from the penalty spot.
Theo Hernandez went through the back of Mason Mount but it took for VAR to intervene for the spot-kick to be awarded.

This time, Kane made a mess of his effort and sent his shot flying over the crossbar.
Such an outcome was “justice”, according to France ace Rabiot, who says “hundreds of actions” similar aren’t awarded.

How England won the tactical battle with France but lost the World Cup war, as one player made the key difference

ENGLAND have crashed out of the World Cup yet again in devastating fashion, losing to reigning champions France.Harry Kane will go to bed with nightmares of his late penalty miss after previously converting which would have put the game level once more.

Gareth Southgate’s side were defeated 2-1 but for much of the match England were the better team – so what went wrong?
Many were critical of England and Southgate or struggling to come out on top in big games, especially on the grandest stage at the World Cup.
Defeat to Les Blues didn’t help to silence critics and now supporters are further divided over the future of the Three Lions manager.
England were unfortunate not to progress into the semi-finals, but tournament football can be cruel and takes no prisoners.
    read more on england
Here are three key tactical details where this quarter-final was won and lost between the two European titans – and one player who made the difference.
    French counterattacks
Heading into the clash, transitions were regularly cited as one way both sides are very similar.
England and France are excellent on the break and have pace and power to cause significant damage to backlines.
Within the opening 20 minutes, the match proved to be a tussle between the two for possession.
    Most read in Football
However, transitions looked to be the most likely way one team was going to score.
Didier Deschamps’ men in particular looked to hit England on the break throughout the match as the Three Lions managed to dominate the ball which was an unprecedented turn of events.
Kylian Mbappe, Ousmane Dembele and even Theo Hernandez were always targeted when France would win the ball. Deschamps wanted his wide players to take on England’s fullbacks and carry the ball directly to the goal in transition.
Luke Shaw had licence to get up field against France
Aurelien Tchouameni’s early wonder-strike was certainly one of the main factors behind England’s possession-dominance as the champions looked to protect their lead for most of the game.
Nevertheless, Southgate knew he had to concoct a plan to ensure that England were secure when France would win back the ball.
Mbappe and Hernandez on the left are so threatening on the break due to their frightening speed and telepathic link-up play, while Dembele on the opposite side can go either way against any defender due to his ability to use both feet comfortably which makes the Barcelona winger so difficult to predict and stop.
At the World Cup so far, when England have had settled possession of the ball against an opponent’s established defensive block, the fullbacks have pushed high into advanced positions.
Southgate knew that Deschamps would try and take advantage of this space on the flanks when the fullbacks moved forward and so he held his wide defenders back.
When the Three Lions had possession, both Kyle Walker and Luke Shaw would sit deeper.
England managed to keep Kylian Mbappe at arm’s length for most of the game
If either Shaw or Walker wanted to advance forward, the other would tuck inside closer to the centre-backs, forming a temporary back three.
This meant that if France recouped the ball, they would already be in position to stop the wide players during counterattacking moments.
Shaw was given more of an attacking license than Walker as Mbappe was seen as a greater threat on the left than Dembele.
Southgate had to think of another plan to help Bukayo Saka on the right.
    Henderson’s overlaps
Jordan Henderson divided opinions prior to kick-off at the Al Bayt Stadium.
The Liverpool skipper put in a pretty decent shift on Sunday versus Senegal, bagging the first goal for England which turned out to be the winner.
A big talking point in the days leading up to the quarter-final was whether Henderson would keep his place or drop back down to the bench.
Southgate named an unchanged lineup, meaning Henderson kept his place alongside Declan Rice and Jude Bellingham in the middle of the park, operating on the right of the trio.
Jordan Henderson played most of the match in the French half
Henderson struggled to help Rice to progress the ball from deep to higher areas of the pitch, leading many to call for him to be taken off.
However, the experienced midfielder was vital to England’s attacking setup in a role that may have gone unnoticed amid Bellingham’s superlative display.
With Walker sitting deeper to ensure he was always within touching distance of Mbappe, Henderson would constantly underlap and overlap Saka on the right side so that the Arsenal winger wasn’t isolated on the flank.
It was Henderson’s lovely ball to Saka from the right side into the box which led to the penalty for England’s only goal of the game.
Henderson performs this exact role really well at Anfield, often combining with Trent Alexander-Arnold and Mo Salah on the wing so it was quite an obvious tactical selection from Southgate.
This worked well for England, not because Henderson proved to be a menace in the final third for the Three Lions, but because the Liverpool player’s movement was dragging French defenders astray, creating space for Saka to do some damage.
Saka was cutting inside and shooting, whipping balls into the box and linking up well with Henderson while Shaw and Foden did the same on the left, meaning England had balance in attack.
    Revitalised Antoine Griezmann
In 2019, Antoine Griezmann signed for Barcelona, ending his illustrious spell in Madrid under Diego Simeone.
Unfortunately, his time at the Nou Camp was disastrous and in the most recent summer window, Griezmann moved back to Atletico on a permanent basis with his tail between his legs.
The French attacker looked way off the pace and couldn’t adapt to life with La Blaugrana.
Antoine Griezmann has been reinvented as France’s playmaker
Many were surprised to even see him in the starting lineup for France’s first World Cup bout against Australia.
But the World Cup winner’s time in Catalonia wasn’t as career-halting as it once seemed.
Spending every day training and playing with players such as Lionel Messi and Sergio Busquets switched a lightbulb on in Griezmann’s mind.
Maybe he wasn’t ever going to be the striker he once was five or six years ago, but he could perfect a whole new position, reinventing his game.
In Qatar, the 31-year-old has been exceptional for Les Bleus has a playmaker, sitting between the lines and creating chances for others rather than trying to finish them off.
Against England, the Atletico Madrid star was found in really good positions in pockets of space and managed to create numerous opportunities for the world champions.
When Griezmann would receive the ball between the lines, facing forward, Giroud, Mbappe and Dembele would begin darting in behind expecting to be slipped in.
The most scintillating created chance from Griezmann was his whipped cross towards Olivier Giroud for the winning goal, a truly excellent ball from the revitalised attacker.
It is this creative nature that led Deschamps to trial Griezmann out as a No10, allowing him to roam freely in the final third, drifting from left to right to pick up the ball and attempt to find others to potentially score.
So what does this all mean?
Well, without sugar-coating the issue, England have exited the competition and further questions will now be asked about whether Southgate truly is the right man to bring home another international trophy for the men’s team.
What could have been a night that the Three Lions proved to the world that they are a force to be reckoned with, ended in yet another disappointment.
France, on the other hand, were possibly second-best throughout the match but winning teams find a way to win, and Deschamps’ men proved why they are the reigning champions.

But the man in the middle came under fire for his performance.
Four years ago at the World Cup in Russia Sampaio was on VAR duty and he had already caused controversy this tournament before Saturday night’s display.

Sampaio gave Saudi Arabia a penalty in their group game against Poland after checking the VAR monitor at the side of the pitch.
He penalised Krystian Bielik for a challenge on Saleh Al-Shehri, despite there appearing to be little contact.

Pundits also reckoned right-back Matty Cash should have been shown a second yellow card in the sane game, which Poland won 2-0.
Then last night Three Lions skipper Harry Kane was denied a first-half penalty despite appearing to be tripped by France defender Dayot Upamecano.
Sampaio also waved play on after a robust Upamecano challenge on Saka in the build up to France’s opener.
He did award England a penalty when Aurelien Tchouameni blatantly tripped Saka on the box, but was initially unmoved when Mason Mount was barged over by Theo Hernandez later in the game.

“I’m not saying that was all down to England’s defeat because that’s making excuses, he was just a bad referee, rank bad.”
England defender Harry Maguire said: “I can’t really explain his performance, the amount of decisions he got wrong was actually incredible. Really poor.”
Pranksters even changed Sampaio’s Wikipedia page after a number of his debateable decisions.
