France make double substitution BEFORE half-time of World Cup final with Giroud and Dembele hooked

FRANCE made a double substitution BEFORE half-time in a desperate attempt to rescue their World Cup dreams.Didier Deschamps’ side found themselves 2-0 down thanks to Lionel Messi’s penalty and Angel Di Maria’s team goal after just 36 minutes.

And the French boss wasted no time in making the changes to try and claw their way back into the contest.
He hooked off Olivier Giroud and Ousmane Dembele and sent on Marcus Thuram and Randal Kolo Muani with just 41 minutes on the clock.
Giroud was absolutely livid, launching a water bottle to the ground as he furiously took his place on the bench.
Viewers at home were split on the brave call by the French boss – but Roy Keane backed the “gamble” he had to make.
Michael Owen tweeted: “Huge decision that by Descamps. Needs to change the course of the game but with three mins to go until half-time? Dembele I get but Giroud?”
France have had a virus in the camp this week but is unclear if any players are still feeling the effects of the illness.
Dembele and Giroud made no impact going forwards as no French player managed a shot in the first half – meaning Les Bleus had more subs than shots in the first half.
However, Dembele gifted Argentina the spot-kick when he tripped Di Maria in the area.

Gary Neville slammed for launching into political rant over crippling strikes during World Cup final coverage

GARY Neville has been slammed for launching into a political rant over the UK’s crippling strikes during ITV’s World Cup final coverage. The Manchester United legend attacked the British government in the run-up to the Argentina vs France kickoff.

It comes as the World Cup in Qatar has been dogged by scandals.
It has been marred by controversy – from allegations of corruption to outrage over the country’s human rights practices.
Thousands of migrant workers have reportedly died in the Qatari construction industry since the World Cup was awarded to them in 2010.
Concerns were also raised over the rights of fans travelling to the event – especially LGBT+ individuals and women, who rights groups say Qatari laws discriminate against.
    MORE ON NEVILLE
And today Labour party member Neville, 47, likened the human rights disgraces in the Arab country to the strikes taking place in the UK.
He said: “The working system of Kafala which obviously through football the conversation has started and it’s been removed here now in Qatar but it is abhorrent and we should detest low pay, we should detest poor accommodation and working conditions.
“We can never accept that in this region or any other region and it is just worth mentioning we’ve got a current government in our country that are demonising rail workers, ambulance workers and terrifyingly nurses.
“In our country we’ve got to look at workers’ rights but when football goes, we have to pick up on workers’ rights wherever it goes because people have got to be equal and treated equal.

“We can’t have people being paid an absolute pittance to work, we can’t have people in accommodation that is unsavoury and disgusting. It shouldn’t happen here.
“That shouldn’t happen here with the wealth that exists.
“But it shouldn’t happen with the nurses in our country either where our nurses are having to fight for an extra pound or two pounds.”
Fans rushed to social media to blast his claims.
One fumed: “Had to switch World Cup over earlier due to Gary Neville’s rant about the government.
“A champagne socialist there to talk about the World Cup. Thinks he’s now a third-rate politician.”
Another said: “Switched to BBC despite wanting to watch Keane.
“You have Neville being thick forgetting about the estimated 6500 migrant deaths equating that with strikes in U.K.”
A third said: “Turned off as soon as you went all hypocritical again. Picking up millions for working in Qatar while justifying it because nurses are on strike. Not the brightest are you.”

However, some people praised the former footie star for speaking out.
One person said: “Well Gary Neville was being asked about Human Rights. Surely he’s entitled to state his opinion. It’s been a big part of the World Cup background.” More

He coolly stroked the ball into the back of the net after sending Hugo Lloris the wrong way following Ousmane Dembele’s pathetic attempt to stop Angel Di Maria.
Messi’s goal was his sixth of the tournament – placing him one clear of Kylian Mbappe in the race for the Golden Boot.
It took his overall tally to 12, level with three-time winner and Brazil icon Pele.
And with eight assists, he now has 20 goal involvements – the most of any player in World Cup history since 1966.
Messi also became the first player to score in every round of a single World Cup tournament.
He found the net against Saudi Arabia and Mexico in the group stages then did the same to see off Australia in the last 16, Holland in the quarter-final and Croatia in the semis to reach the final before his final finish.
Messi played a part in Argentina’s second goal, too, with his gorgeous flick allowing Julian Alvarez to play Alexis Mac Allister in and set Di Maria up for 2-0.

Things started perfectly for Les Bleus, with Malouda winning a penalty that was subsequently converted by Zidane.
But after being pegged back by the Italians the French were forced into extra time – where things began to go drastically wrong.
After a war of words Zidane infamously headbutted Materazzi in the 110th minute, receiving a red card in what was the final match of his career.
Malouda received a booking for dissent shortly after, but has now admitted that he didn’t know what had actually happened.

Speaking exclusively to Ladbrokes: Halftime Quiz, the 42-year-old said: “In terms of the final and the famous incident with Marco Materazzi, I was on the pitch at the time.
“Myself and Franck Ribery had swapped wings during extra-time so I was close to the incident.
“But honestly, at that stage in the game, the ball was going from box-to-box, the tempo was so fast and us players were just following the ball. Everybody was paying attention to the other end of the pitch.
“We were all surprised why the game had been stopped, at that time there was no VAR so no one knew what had happened!

“I was just wondering why the referee had stopped the game and then, when the referee gave Zizou the red card, we just couldn’t understand. We didn’t even notice there was an incident.
“But it happened, Zizou left the pitch and we carried on. We tried to win the game, that was all we were focusing on.
“We regrouped and sorted our shape out but to be honest, at that stage in the game there were no real positions; everyone was just trying to win the game before it went to a penalty shoot-out.
“After the final whistle, there’s just disappointment. You’ve lost a World Cup final. You’re not thinking about the incident that much, it’s only when you go back home and you read about it, you see the replay of it.
“I’ve been asked what really happened by many people since that day, but the honest answer is that I don’t know.
“On the pitch, things were happening so fast, and there were so many emotions flying around, we just don’t know what led to it.
“I’ve seen Zidane a few times since that happened and I’ve never considered asking him about it. It’s done and we lost a World Cup final.”
France lost 5-3 in the penalty shoot-out, with villain of the piece Materazzi converting his spot-kick.
David Trezeguet missed Les Bleus’ second effort, with Fabio Grosso going on to score the winning penalty.

Marciniak was in the middle for France’s 2-1 win over Denmark in the group stages and Argentina’s last-16 win over Australia.
    Who is Szymon Marciniak?
Born in Plock, Marciniak had an odd path into refereeing.
Starting out as a player, he was so incensed at being sent off in one match that he told the referee in a foul-mouthed tirade that he was the worst he’d ever seen.
And the official replied: “If you think you can do better – you try it!”
    So he did.
Marciniak rose through the amateur ranks to make his Ekstraklasa debut in 2009.
He become a Fifa-listed referee in 2011, which made him eligible for selection at Europa League, Champions League and internationals.
After taking charge of the Under-21 Euro 2015 final, he made his major championship bow the following summer in France.
There Marciniak reffed Spain vs Czech Republic, Iceland vs Austria in the group stage, as well as Germany vs Slovakia in the knockout phase.
