    Goodnight from us
Thank you for keeping up with SunSport’s live blog of Italy vs England in Milan.
See you on Monday for the home game against Germany.
Let’s hope things looks a bit brighter on November 21 eh?

England slump to defeat at the San Siro
Drab England looked bang off trend in Milan Fashion Week  – and were deservedly and embarrassingly relegated from the top flight of the Nations League, writes Dan King.
As a collective, Gareth Southgate’s men yet again did not do enough to create chances and have now gone five matches without scoring from open play.
There was not the same defensive mayhem as in the humiliating home defeat by Hungary, despite a nervy start.
But one mistake by Kyle Walker was enough to allow man of the match Giacomo Raspadori to grab the only goal.
Eric Dier’s return and Jude Bellingham’s continuing progress were the only significant positives from another dismal night in this competition.
The most worrying thing is that England’s starting 11 for their opening World Cup game against Iran in less than two months may well not look much different from this.
The performance will need to be.

    ‘It’s coming’, says Rice
Declan Rice insists England will come up trumps in Qatar.
He said: “It’s obviously disappointing. Every tournament we go into, we set out to win. In the Nations League we have slipped below our standards but I didn’t think it was all bad tonight.
“It’s coming. It was a much better performance tonight than we saw in the summer.
“It’s not that we’re not creating the chances. I see it in training. There are goals for fun.
“Trust me, we are going to be good.”

    Southgate booed by England fans
The England boss applauded the travelling supporters but was greeted with a mixed reaction.
    There were some clear boos.
I’m sure they’ll be cheering when he brings home the trophy in December.

    England relegated from Group 3
There’s nothing the Three Lions can do against Germany on Monday to save themselves.
It now becomes purely an experimental game and a send off for the boys at Wembley before Qatar in November.

    FULL TIME: Italy 1-0 England
It’s not to be for Southgate’s lions tonight.
Five games without a win and three matches without scoring a goal.
England are relegated from Group 3.

90 + 5 James crosses to Bellingham but he can only nod it over!
Would have been the icing on the cake of a great Bellingham performance if that had found the net.
    Italy 1-0 England
90 + 2 England have constant possession in Italy’s half for a couple of minutes.
Rice turns in and hits it!

So many shots over the bar tonight from Southgate’s side.
    Italy 1-0 England
79 – Grealish is scythed by Di Lorenzo.
    Dangerous position for the free-kick.
Italy make a change. The goal scorer goes off. Former Southampton man on.
    OFF Raspadorri
    ON Gabbiadini
    Italy 1-0 England
76 – Kane smashes the ball at Donnarumma TWICE but they are both straight at him.
Sterling with a jinking run into the box but it’s nabbed from him on the edge.
    Italy 1-0 England
72 – Donnarumma mugs off Kane in his box. Silky.
England WILL be relegated from the Nations League group if it stays this way.
    Italy 1-0 England
    70 – England win a free-kick.
Southgate responds to the goal by making a double substitution.
    OFF Saka
    OFF Walker
    ON Grealish
    ON Shaw
    Italy 1-0 England
68 – Lovely finish by the Napoli striker.
England let him wriggle in the box and create space to shoot.
He curls in to the bottom corner.
    GOAL – Raspadori
    Italy 1-0 England.
    Italy 0-0 England
    66 – Bellingham fouled again.
He’s been good tonight, such a mature footballer for his age.
    Italy 0-0 England
64 – Azzurri bombard the England goal.
Walker dives to block a shot. Pope saves. Kane then blocks.
    Italy 0-0 England
62 – Changes for the hosts.
18-year-old Gnoto comes on. He’s Italy’s youngest ever goal scorer.
    OFF Scamacca
    OFF Barella
    ON Gnonto
    On Pobega
    Italy 0-0 England
60 – Bellingham is clattered on the edge of the box.
He is first to the ball, wins the header, it falls to Dier who has a speculative effort but it flies over.
    Italy 0-0 England
57 – It’s getting chippy here at the San Siro as Dimarco and James collide.
Foden gets in a light scrap to try and claim the ball.
    Italy 0-0 England
55 – Kane is finally allowed back on after receiving treatment.
Italy miss a clear chance! Fluffed by Barella.
    But it’s offside anyway.
    Italy 0-0 England
50 – A waste from Kane as he was through but allowed Bonucci to draw him wide.
Corner to Southgate’s men. James whips it in. It amounts to nothing.
Kane has a nasty blow to the face.

Fifa say Neymar is just three goals off Pele’s record but Brazil claim PSG star has further to go

NEYMAR is three goals away from breaking Pele’s Brazilian record, according to Fifa. But the Brazilian Federation’s statistics say the Paris Saint-Germain forward is still a huge 21 behind the three-time World Cup winner.

Pele is widely regarded as Brazil’s greatest ever playerCredit: Rex
Neymar currently has 74 goals for his country, while Pele finished his international career with 77 Fifa-registered goals.
Brazil take on Ghana and Tunisia in the next four days, so Neymar could theoretically break the record in those matches before the World Cup later this year.
However, the Brazilian Federation insist Pele netted 95 times.
This is because they count 18 goals he scored in friendly matches against the likes of Malmo, AIK, Inter Milan, Atletico Madrid, Chivas Guadalajara, Leon, Bahia and Atletico Mineiro.

As a result, even if Neymar nets four times in Brazil’s upcoming two matches, his home football association is still not expected to consider him their record scorer.
Neymar’s 74 goals have come in 119 appearances – a ratio of 0.62 goals per game.
Pele managed his official tally of 77 in just 92 matches.
The 81-year-old also lifted the World Cup three times in 12 years – with Brazil’s triumphs coming in 1958, 1962 and 1970.

Paul Merson picks his England XI for first World Cup 2022 clash and goes all-out attack with just one centre-back

PAUL MERSON has selected his England XI for the side’s opening World Cup fixture. The Three Lions start their tournament against Iran on November 21.
Merson has predicted his England XI to open the World Cup 2022

And the former Arsenal and England midfielder has picked who he wants to start in Gareth Southgate’s side.
Merson, 54, lines up with a back four that features a Kyle Walker and John Stones centre-back pairing.
Trent Alexander-Arnold and Kieran Trippier are his full-backs.
Declan Rice sits in front of the defence, with Mason Mount and Phil Foden as the box-to-box midfielders.

Captain Harry Kane spearheads his team with Raheem Sterling and Marcus Rashford either side of him in attack.
But a lot of fans on Sky Sports’ social media don’t agree with the gung-ho attacking views of 21-cap Merson.
One user claimed: “We all know Southgate is going to start Maguire at center back. Even if he breaks his leg a day before our first World cup game he’ll probably start him.”
While another disagreed with Merson: “Trent would be the last pick right back in a back 4 surely?

“Maybe a back 5 but he is constantly out of position and can’t defend so that automatically makes us weaker at the back.”
And another added: “Saka was one of our best performers in the Euros and his form for club has been consistently good? Also why 1 central defender in the back 4…”
Meanwhile, Ivan Toney will be left out of England’s squad for Friday’s clash in Italy along with four other stars.
The Brentford striker received his first Three Lions call-up last week after a brilliant start to the Premier League season with the Bees.
However, he will have to wait a little longer to make his England bow with the ace not even named on the bench for the Nations League game at the San Siro.
Jordan Henderson, who replaced the injured Kalvin Phillips in the squad, will also play no part against the Azzurri despite returning from his recent hamstring injury quicker than expected.

Arsenal icon Thierry Henry may take charge of Belgium against Holland in first international management game

The French legend may be dishing out the orders from the dug-out against HollandCredit: Getty
However, they seem certain to go into the showdown without their manager Martinez on the touchline.
The Spaniard, 49, was sent off during the dying seconds of last night’s 2-1 victory over Wales.
He was given his marching orders for time-wasting after refusing to return the ball to a Welsh player as they pressed for an equaliser.
The former Everton and Wigan coach is now set to be punished by Uefa, which could lead to a touchline ban against the Netherlands.

And that could mean that Arsenal legend Henry, who is Martinez’s assistant, may get his first taste of leading an international team from the bench in his absence.
However, it all depends whether Martinez is able to launch an appeal against his dismissal.
He said: “I don’t understand this red card. I took the ball. It was worth a yellow card, but not a red. We’ll see if we can appeal.
“I admit that I was a little surprised to be excluded in this way, it was not much. But well, it is clear that I should have left the ball to the Welsh player, not to quibble with it. We’ll see what happens, I hope to be cleared by Uefa.”

Henry initially started his coaching career under Martinez with the Belgian national team from 2016.
He left that role after two years to take charge of French club Monaco, however, he was axed just months later following a dismal spell.
Henry failed to win a league home match and left the Ligue 1 outfit second bottom of the table after collecting only 15 points from his 21 games at the helm.
He then headed to the MLS when he was appointed boss of Montreal Impact at the end of 2019 on a two-year deal.
But after leading them to the “play-in” round of the Eastern Conference Play-Offs, he quit due to troubles being able to travel and visit his family in London amid the coronavirus pandemic in February 2021.
He was not out of work long, and he soon linked back up with Martinez as his assistant manager at Belgium. More

Aston Villa rocked by huge double injury blow with Lucas Digne and Boubacar Kamara set to miss World Cup

ASTON VILLA have confirmed they have been rocked with a double hammer-blow, with their French internationals Lucas Digne and Boubacar Kamara set to miss the Qatar World Cup.SunSport revealed yesterday that Steven Gerrard’s injury curse had struck again with key midfielder Kamara ruled out for two months after suffering a crippling knee injury against Southampton last Friday.

Now Villa have confirmed the serious nature of Kamara’s injury and have suffered a second blow with Lucas Digne.
Digne was ruled out of the French squad after suffering a suspected stress fracture which is also likely to end his World Cup dreams.
A statement from Villa said: “Aston Villa can confirm Boubacar Kamara suffered a knee ligament injury during last Friday’s victory over Southampton.
“The midfielder sustained the damage during the first half of our encounter with Saints and was replaced by Douglas Luiz shortly before half-time.

“As a result of the injury, Kamara was forced to withdraw from the French national squad for this round of UEFA Nations League fixtures and has begun a rehabilitation programme.”
SunSport understands the gutted midfielder is currently in Dubai starting the long haul back to fitness and he hopes to return early in the new year.
Digne’s latest setback is the THIRD major injury issue to hit Gerrard, who lost £26million summer signing Diego Carlos to a ruptured Achilles in August.
Gerrard’s side have struggled in the Premier League this season having picked up just two wins from their opening seven games.

The Villans currently sit in 15th in the table after picking up four points from their last two games – following a sequence of three defeats in a row.
Both Digne and Kamara had started every game in the league this season, with Digne playing every minute possible in that time too.
Their loss will doubtless come as a massive hindrance to Aston Villa’s chances of picking up some momentum prior to the World Cup. More
