England have a ‘good chance’ of WINNING World Cup despite horror run, declares victorious Italy manager Roberto Mancini

ITALY boss Roberto Mancini believes England still have a “good chance” of winning the World Cup later this year.Gareth Southgate’s men lost 1-0 to Mancini’s side in Milan on Friday night, extending their winless run to five matches as they were relegated from their Nations League group.

England have just one game left before the World Cup in Qatar – a clash with Germany on Monday.
They have not tasted victory since March, drawing two and losing three since then and scoring just one goal in the process.
But Mancini, whose Italy side have not qualified for the World Cup, still believes England remain one of the favourites to lift the trophy despite their poor form.
Speaking after the match, he said: “You [England] are in the World Cup and that is the most important.

“My opinion is that England is one of the best teams in the world even if they lose the game.
“They can have a good chance in the World Cup.”
Southgate received criticism from the likes of Gary Lineker during the defeat to Italy.
The former England striker disagreed with the decision to leave James Maddison out of the squad and Trent Alexander-Arnold on the bench.

But Southgate continued to see the positives in the performance, albeit while acknowledging the concerns around the winless run.
He said: “I understand the reaction at the end because that’s the results we’ve had in this competition. It’s an understandable emotional reaction.
“There’s going to be a lot of noise but that will be around me and that’s absolutely fine. It’s my job to take that pressure for them.
“I personally thought the performance was a step in the right direction but I perfectly understand that because of the result that’s not going to be the reaction.”

Five problems Southgate must fix with desperate England in disarray just 56 days before the World Cup starts in Qatar

ENGLAND’S preparations for the World Cup in Qatar are going from bad to worse. The 1-0 defeat in Milan against European Champions Italy on Friday night means Gareth Southgate’s side are on a run of FIVE GAMES without a win.

England haven’t had such a barren run since 1992 when the late Graham Taylor was manager.
Not only have they forgotten how to win, they can’t even score any more, despite having England hero Harry Kane up front.
The Three Lions have not scored from open play in 450 MINUTES and have gone three games without a goal for the first time in 22 years.
They were booed off the park by the England fans in the San Siro, and a Sun Twitter poll showed 83% of fans want him sacked before the World Cup starts in 56 days’ time.

Southgate’s side will now be relegated from League A of the Nations League so will play against weaker nations in 2024.
But it’s the World Cup that’s the major concern, with England’s first game against Iran on November 21.
Southgate is facing a desert storm of problems ahead of his trip to Qatar.
They have gone into reverse since losing the Euros finals on penalties a year ago.
Here are five key issues he must fix between now and then.

    Too cautious
England went with their tried and tested back five against Italy, with three centre-backs in Kyle Walker, Harry Maguire and Eric Dier.
This means fewer places for creative players, and perhaps helps explain England’s current goal drought.
Southgate is naturally cautious, so he’s unlikely to change formations so close to the tournament.
But his desire to keep it tight at the back limits England’s options in attack. They have not scored from open play for 450 minutes now, despite having so many options in attack.
Gary Lineker slammed Southgate for leaving Trent Alexander-Arnold on the bench against Italy, claiming he’s the most creative player England have.
    Key players struggling for form
Several of Southgate’s key performers in recent tournaments are struggling at club level this season.
Top of the list is Harry Maguire, who was picked in the starting XI in Milan despite just five appearances for Man Utd this season.
At left back, Ben Chilwell and Luke Shaw are out of their respective teams at Chelsea and United, meaning Bukayo Saka was crow-barred into the side against Italy as left wing-back.
Mason Mount’s form at Chelsea has fallen off a cliff, while Raheem Sterling is finding his feet at the club following his summer transfer.
Kalvin Phillips has hardly played since he moved to Man City.
Southgate has to decide which trusted players to stick with, and which ones to ditch for players in better form.

    Relying on Kane
England looked stale in attack, with Harry Kane in the middle, and Raheem Sterling and Phil Foden either side of him.
Kane has 50 goals for his country, but was denied service in Italy and was forced to drop deeper.
England don’t have a Plan B if it’s not working with Kane, with Ivan Toney and Tammy Abraham too inexperienced at this level.
Marcus Rashford’s timely return to form at Man Utd will at least give Southgate another option.
It’s a pity he picked up a muscle injury and missed meeting up with the squad.
    Trust his young stars
Saka is one of England’s brightest talents, but he spent much of the game on defensive duties.
Jude Bellingham too was shackled in midfield. The teenager needs to be give more freedom to attack and impose himself on the game.
Phil Foden has become a key figure for Pep Guardiola at Man City, but Southgate has yet to work out how to get the best out of him at international level.
    Get the nation behind him
Southgate has been brilliant at getting fans on his side since he took the job in 2016.
However he was booed off the pitch at Molineux after a 4-0 home defeat to Hungary.
And he was greeted with more abuse when he went over to salute the 4,000 travelling supporters in the San Siro on Friday.

Afterwards he said: “I understand the reaction at the end because of the results we’ve had in this competition. It is an understandable emotional reaction.”
Southgate needs to flip the mood. Victory over Germany at Wembley on Monday in their final game before Qatar would do much to lift the gloom. More

Giacomo Raspadori’s second half strike was the difference.
To make matters worse, England are without a win in five games and haven’t scored a goal in open play in over 450 minutes of football.
It’s also England’s worst run in 22 years.
All of this, of course, is unfolding just months ahead of a World Cup that not long ago England were considered one of the favourites to win.

Give Gareth Southgate some slack, critics.. England were a penalty shootout away from being European champions under him

SOME of the flak being aimed at England manager Gareth Southgate has been unfair. After two shocking defeats to Hungary, some of it has also been fair.

But, whichever side of the Southgate fence you sit on, one fact is undeniable — the national team is in far better shape than it was six years ago when he took over.
Rewind to 2016 and we had the shambles of a defeat to the might of Iceland, followed by the brief Sam Allardyce reign.
Let’s face it, we were really the laughing stock of Europe.
Southgate has transformed the fortunes of the Three Lions and, OK, we haven’t managed to win anything tangible — unlike the Lionesses — but at least we have been contenders, if not champions.

A World Cup semi-final, followed by a first appearance in a major final since the heady days of 1966, means progress has been made.
Southgate doesn’t need me or anyone else to defend him, he is big enough to do that himself but some of the recent sniping has been below the belt.
This England team may not be feared, but at least it is respected, and a lot of the credit for that must go to the manager.
Football fans could say Southgate has been lucky in that a stack of talented youngsters are coming through on his watch, yet do you remember the so-called ‘Golden Generation’ of David Beckham, Steven Gerrard and Frank Lampard?

Yes, I do too. And what exactly did we do back then? To borrow a phrase belonging to Norman Stanley Fletcher in Porridge, ‘Naff all Godber, naff all’.
Jack Grealish has defended Southgate’s record — and who can blame him?
But I don’t agree with Grealish’s “this is what you get if you’re English” comment.
I think if any national side of reasonable stature lost 4-0 at home to Hungary then there would be some stick.
Southgate is a well-balanced human being and he will know that the only guide to managerial success or failure is results.
His results have been excellent, until recently. That doesn’t make him a bad manager, as his team has lost only 12 games out of 74.

The players can use Southgate’s mangling as a motivator.
Thumped in the Molineux mauling by the Magyars, they now have the perfect stage to come out fighting for their country and their manager.
Only Harry Kane seems certain of his starting place when we kick off our World Cup campaign against Iran on November 21 — and the striker’s 50 goals in 73 international appearances suggests Southgate is right to ink his name in.
As for the rest, places are up for grabs and surely that must create real competition?
If we crash out early in Qatar, you can be sure Southgate’s contract until the end of 2024 won’t be worth much. But it is only right we wait to see how he does.
We were a penalty shootout away from being crowned kings of Europe, so instead of the flak, give Southgate some slack. He earned that much at least.

IT was a special moment on Thursday as we welcomed Mark Noble back to West Ham as our new sporting director.
A true legend of the East End, Mark has always been and will always be part of the fabric at West Ham, having made 550 senior appearances across 18 incredible years of devoted service.
Mark will start his important role in January — a new position which will see him work closely in support of manager David Moyes, as well as the board, providing input, advice and help across the football operation.
In addition to the role he will play with the men’s and women’s teams, we’re delighted that his new position will see him continue his close affinity with the academy.
Respected throughout the game, he is undoubtedly one of the crown jewels of our academy, a one-club man who gave his all for the shirt every time he stepped out on to the pitch.
He will now work tirelessly to ensure the pipeline that has made West Ham renowned throughout the world continues and that we attract, develop and retain great players.
And importantly, help us build great characters who understand what West Ham stand for.

Anyone who saw Mark take a penalty knows he relishes responsibility and is never flustered under pressure.
I know from my own dealings with Mark — particularly when we were going through the hugely challenging Covid-19 pandemic — he possesses all the skills, attributes and the right character, to be a huge success.
Fans know Mark as the man who ran through brick walls for West Ham United and always put the club first.
What many won’t know about Mark is his business acumen — he’s sharp, entrepreneurial, forward-thinking and knows his own mind.
He also has that rare knack of being able to speak to anyone from royalty to the man on the street.
We have huge ambition — on and off the pitch — and Mark will play a key role in helping us achieve great things.
No one knows our philosophy and the things that make our great club truly special more than him.

The result saw them RELEGATED from League A of the Nations League for the first time ever.
After an underwhelming first half from both teams, Italy broke the deadlock in the 68th minute thanks to a fantastic strike from Giacomo Raspadori.
The striker brought the ball down on the edge of the box following a cross from Leonardo Bonucci before cutting inside and unleashing a an excellent shot into the bottom right corner.
Southgate reacted quickly by making a double substitution.

Italy 1 England 0: Three Lions RELEGATED from Nations League A and face horror Euro 2024 draw after lacklustre display

SO have you got World Cup fever yet? Are you hanging up your wallchart, buying England’s hideous new shirt, and belting out World In Motion and This Time (We’ll Get It Right)?

    Nope? Thought not.
Not after England were condemned to Nations League relegation, without a win – or a single open-play goal – in five matches and with just one more game to go before a corrupt and immoral tournament in Qatar.
England’s millionaire footballers may have got themselves a hefty tax cut from the Chancellor yesterday but Gareth Southgate’s stock is dropping faster than sterling on the currency exchanges.
This Three Lions side lacked identity and was seriously short on entertainment value as they stank out the San Siro and were beaten by Giacomo Raspadori’s thumping second-half finish.

The biggest roar of the night from the England fans came when a paper plane – national symbol of boredom – was sent onto the pitch from way up in the nosebleed seats at this vast old stadium.
Southgate will recall similar scenes before the last World Cup in Russia – and that campaign went well enough.
But on the basis of this Nations League campaign, nobody should be complacent about England even progressing from a World Cup group which features Iran, USA and Wales.
This bloody great crumbling ruin of a stadium is condemned to the bulldozers but it still holds a great mystique.

England hadn’t played here since 1939 and they haven’t beaten the Azzurri on Italian soil since 1961.
Southgate gave Eric Dier his first England cap for two years and employed Bukayo Saka in the problem left-wing-back position.
The England manager’s favoured back five was rolled out – at least until Italy scored – and it is likely to be his Plan A in Qatar.
When Southgate spoke on the eve of this match of having  ‘compromised’ in his decision-making during a miserable stretch of games in June, he was probably referring to the fact that he has frequently used a crowd-pleasing flat back four – which has rarely produced their better performances.
The Italians – champions of Europe but absent from Qatar after a shocking play-off defeat by North Macedonia – had West Ham’s Gianluca Scamacca leading the line.

The Napoli striker bagged a brilliant goal to undo England’s defenceCredit: Getty
After a stripping opera singer – who tore off her cloak between God Save The King and the Italian anthem – the hosts made a rapid start.
England, in that God-awful kit, were sluggish – Maguire making an early error and then Federico Dimarco crossing to the far post where Scamacca skyscraping header was clawed away by Nick Pope, deputising for the injured Jordan Pickford.
It was scratchy stuff from England. They gave away far too many free-kicks in their own half – a trait which Southgate will be keen for them to ditch at the tournament.
There were moments when the Three Lions threatened on the break, especially when Saka – strangely voted as England’s Player of the Year by supporters – led a charge but Kane boomed his shot way over.
And by half-time, the match appeared to be dying a death. It was as bad as the goalless draw between the same two sides at Molineux in June – and those of us who lived through that one can assure you that that is saying something.

Dier looked solid in the centre of the back three, as he has done for Tottenham ever since Antonio Conte’s arrival, and there were moments of promise from Jude Bellingham, yet the Borussia Dortmund kid wasn’t seeing enough of the ball.
But we were grasping at straws of positivity. As a spectacle, it was an abysmal 45 minutes.
The second period had a lively start – Dier making a fine saving tackle to deny Bryan Cristante a crack on goal, then a Raheem Sterling burst stopped by Leonardo Bonucci’s foul on the edge of the box.
But Reece James, taking most of the set-pieces, blazed the free-kick well over.
England’s set-pieces, such a strength at the last World Cup in Russia, have been largely poor for some time now.
Southgate has three of the best dead-ball merchants in world football in James Ward-Prowse, Kieran Trippier and Trent Alexander-Arnold – perhaps he need to find a way of getting one of them into his team.

From a James corner, Kane suffered a horrible clash of heads with Rafael Toloi but after lengthy treatment, the England captain continued.
But on 68 minutes, the Italians scored with a classy goal but one which will not have filled Kyle Walker with any great pride.
A gorgeous ball over the top from Bonucci caught England’s defence dozing and Raspadori teased Walker this way and that before he thumped a belting finish into the bottom corner.
Southgate sent on Grealish and Luke Shaw for Saka and Walker, moving back to a back four.
And there was suddenly more spark about England – Kane forcing a double save from Gianluigi Donnarumma with two angled drives.
But Pope had to be alert to deny Manolo Gabbiadini with his legs and then Dimarco drove against the inside of the post with Italy looking far more incisive than their visitors.
