Prince William makes awkward comment to Harry Kane ahead of World Cup

PRINCE William risked an awkward clash with Harry Kane — by saying England defeats have helped him deal with life’s disappointments. The royal sat down for a chat with the England skipper and fellow Three Lions’ ace Declan Rice, a fortnight from their opening World Cup match in Qatar.

Discussing football’s effect on mental health, William told them that England crashing out of previous tournaments had taught him valuable life lessons.
He also revealed he loved the “carnage” of school football matches, and how he modelled his own game on former England defender Rio Ferdinand, though far less successfully.
Meanwhile, Rice spoke about the current England squad’s positive mindset — and revealed the Euro final loss to Italy at Wembley last year had brought them closer together.
William, 40, told the pair: “You learn by playing a number of times, and many other things in life, that disappointment is part of life and how you handle it is crucial.

“Handling some of those really disappointing England results in the past, that was hard.
“I found that really difficult, because again the same euphoria that we had comes crashing down.
“You feel high and all together, and then normal life just gets on again.”
William told how at school he would sometimes join in four games with 60 pupils playing at the same time.

He said: “Some of the greatest friendships are born from playing games and being pushed together in slight adversity.
“The sheer size and scale and just the fun of everyone running around chasing each other, I loved it.
“I was a defender, I was stuck at the back and told to just tackle.”
The prince said he looked to former Man United defender Rio for “inspiration” but joked: “He was ahead of me just a little bit as time went on.”
He added it was a “big moment for me” when then-boy wonder Wayne Rooney made his first England appearance at the age of 17.
West Ham captain Rice, 23, told how the heartache of losing to Italy on penalties in the Euro 2020 final at Wembley last summer was eased by manager Gareth Southgate.
The prince said it was a ‘big moment’ for him when Wayne Rooney made his first England appearanceCredit: PA
He said: “There was a special moment after that game, the togetherness when we all came into a huddle after we’d lost that, and Gareth said some really important words.
“As a group, I think that brought us forward together because then we had to qualify for a World Cup in the next round of games.
“We really overcame that setback of losing that final, showed our togetherness and our strength and I feel that we are in a really good place as a national team.”
In the 25-minute video chat – released a fortnight before England play Iran – William praised the work of Shout, a free and confidential 24-hour text messaging service for people struggling with their mental health.
Kane, 29, revealed his love of football began when his dad gave him a fiver after he scored his first goal aged five.
And he was now trying to help youngsters himself, as Shout has worked with his charitable Harry Kane Foundation.

The Spurs forward said: “My aim is to, especially to the younger generation, talk to them and try and provide ways of talking about mental health and wellbeing.
“The more we talk about it and open up, it will definitely help solve and hopefully encourage people not to be afraid to ask for help, especially when you are feeling a little bit lower.”                    More

Gary Neville reveals why Gareth Southgate can’t trust Liverpool’s Trent Alexander-Arnold for England World Cup squad

GARY NEVILLE has insisted that England manager Gareth Southgate cannot trust Liverpool defender Trent Alexander-Arnold.The Three Lions boss is set to name his final squad for the World Cup in Qatar and the right-back position has been one for debate.

Defenders Reece James, Kieran Trippier, and Kyle Walker have all had injury issues which have led to calls for Alexander-Arnold to be given a chance in the national team.
However, the 24-year-old has struggled defensively this season and has been labelled as untrustworthy by the former Manchester United defender.
Neville told Sky Sports: “It’s a really tough one because his brilliance going forward is out of this world.
“How are England going to win or lose in the World Cup? It is going to come down to one moment, and at this moment in time, I can’t see how Gareth can go into a knockout game at the World Cup with Trent.

“I want this player to be the greatest right back of all time, but at times today, he looked like he could have cost Liverpool.
“I think at the World Cup, he is giving away a penalty. I don’t think Gareth will trust him in a knockout game and that may influence his decision as to whether he goes or not.”
Despite helping the Reds to their first away win in the Premier League this season over Tottenham, he was lucky not to be penalised for a penalty that could have cost his side.
The Reds star has been backed by former club stars Jamie Redknapp and Graeme Souness, who has both said that they would like to see him go to Qatar due to his ability going forward.

Redknapp said: “The flip side of it is if you’re struggling, and he is not starting you can bring him on to create a bit of brilliance going forward.
“I just don’t see how we can afford to not take a player of that capacity that can produce something so vital in important moments.
“We have got obsessed with right-backs over the years, and Walker and James are under pressure because of their injuries and you have to take a risk.
“At times today Trent looked like he was in a tumble dryer he was getting thrown around everywhere, but the flip side of it is someone that can do something incredible with the football.”
Souness added: “100 per cent. I understand why there is a nervousness, but you must take him.

This injury led to major concerns as injured just one month before France’s opening game of the tournament against Australia.
However, the team’s vice-captain is now reportedly on track with his recovery and is already doing running exercises, according to GFFN.
The report also says that the former Real Madrid defender underwent treatment at the French national base at Clairefontaine.
Didier Deschamps will be happy to have one of his stars back as France are set to go into the competition without Paul Pogba and N’Golo Kante.

There also concerns over the form of Atletico Madrid attacker Antoine Griezmann, who has not hit the level of his previous highs.
Varane is likely to be used in the back line as part of a defensive three alongside Arsenal star William Saliba and AS Monaco rising star Benoit Badiashile.
Red Devils manager Erik ten Hag will be keen to get the 29-year-old back in his team, especially after the 3-1 defeat to Aston Villa on Sunday.

Fifa team of tournament for World Cup 2018 revealed… and you’ll NEVER guess starting XI that includes Liverpool flop

WITH the 2022 World Cup less than two weeks away, fans will find themselves casting their memories back to the previous tournament. The 2018 edition in Russia threw up a number of surprise performers that made for an incredible team of the tournament.

England reached the semi-finals before crashing out in heartbreaking fashion to Croatia in extra-time.
But the Three Lions still had two representatives in Fifa’s World Cup team of the tournament.
Kieran Tripper, then at Tottenham, was an unsurprising inclusion at right-back after a superb campaign which included a stunning free-kick in the semi-final defeat to Croatia.
Ashley Young was also named in the team of the tournament after being a regular in the team that reached the semi-finals.

The ex-Manchester United man even provided an assist for Harry Maguire in the 2-0 quarter-final win over Sweden.
There was no place for Harry Kane in the team of the tournament, despite the Three Lions talisman scooping the golden boot.
Instead Kylian Mbappe nabbed the striker spot in the team of the tournament after scoring four goals on his way to lifting the trophy with France.
Antoine Griezmann was also included for his four goals and two assists in just seven games.

But one of the more surprising names from the XI is Dejan Lovren.
While the unpredictable defender never really proved his worth at Liverpool, the Croatian was superb in helping his nation to the final.
And Lovren was rewarded for his performances with a place in the team of the tournament.
Spurs flop Paulinho is another name not many would have guessed as one of the best 11 stars from Russia 2018.
Then on loan at Chinese side Guangzhou Evergrande from Barcelona, Paulinho started all, five of Brazil’s games before they were beaten in the quarters by Belgium.
He even chipped in with a goal in the 2-0 group stage win over Serbia.
World Cup winners Hugo Lloris and Raphael Varane joined France team-mates Griezmann and Mbappe in the XI.
Luka Modric was named in the team after starring for Croatia in their incredible run to the final, with the midfielder also scooping the Ballon d’Or later that year.

The England XI which should start World Cup based on form this season including shock defence with Ben Mee at back

GARETH SOUTHGATE is set to name his 26-man England squad for the World Cup on Thursday. The Three Lions boss has trimmed his options down to a provisional 55-player roster ahead of the final selection later this week.

But there are a couple of Premier League stars who are expected to be overlooked ahead of the final squad.
That is if Southgate was to select it purely based on players’ form so far this season.
And SunSport has taken a look at England’s most in-form XI, according to WhoScored.com.
    Here is the team…

England’s starting line-up based on form so far this season
    GK: JORDAN PICKFORD
England’s No1 Jordan Pickford has been in fine form for Everton so far this season and would keep his place in between the sticks even if it came down to current form.
The 28-year-old has been Southgate’s first choice for five years now and is showing no signs of letting it slip.
Pickford is continuing to produce stunning performances in between the sticksCredit: Getty
    RWB: KIERAN TRIPPIER
Newcastle full-back Kieran Trippier is another of Southgate’s favourites and has built on the manager’s belief with some impressive club form.
The former Spurs and Atletico Madrid man has been an instrumental part of Eddie Howe’s side’s success and is surely a starter against Iran later this month.
    CB: REECE JAMES
Chelsea defender Reece James may be facing a race to be fit for the World Cup, but he has already shown he deserves a place on the plane.
The 22-year-old has played as a left and right wing-back, while also filling in at the heart of a back three.
His versatility and form make him a certainty in Southgate’s squad… if he can recover from his injury setback.
    CB: JAMES TARKOWSKI
Frank Lampard’s Everton were struggling to keep things tight before the start of this season.
But the arrival of Conor Coady and James Tarkowski have stabilised their back line. And Tarkowski has been the standout man – even if Coady is closer to the England team.
He is not even in the conversation for a place on the plane, but the ex-Burnley man can feel aggrieved about that.
    CB: BEN MEE
Perhaps the most surprising player in this team is Tarkowski’s former Burnley team-mate Ben Mee.
The Brentford centre-back has been thriving since arriving in west London, but has not been considered for an England cap.

    LWB: SOLLY MARCH
A very underrated part of Roberto De Zerbi’s superb Brighton team, Solly March can count himself unlucky for not being considered for England.
The 28-year-old can play as a wingback on either side of the pitch and has been brilliant for the Seagulls of late.
March is a surprise inclusion in the in-form England XICredit: Reuters
    CM: DECLAN RICE
It’s no surprise that West Ham captain Declan Rice is in this England XI.
The Hammers talisman, 23, is the second name on Southgate’s team sheet after skipper Harry Kane.
And he has continued to perform this season despite being surrounded by an underperforming side.
    CM: JUDE BELLINGHAM
Teenager Jude Bellingham already has 17 caps to his name. But now most England fans see him as a non-negotiable starter for the World Cup.
The Borussia Dortmund star has nine goals and two assists already this season.
    RW: JAMES MADDISON
One of England’s best-performing players going into the World Cup is Leicester playmaker James Maddison.
Yet despite his six goals and four assists in 12 games this season, the 25-year-old faces the very real possibility of missing out on the squad altogether, with the likes of Raheem Sterling, Bukayo Saka, Jack Grealish and Phil Foden all seemingly ahead of him.
Maddison has been outstanding for Leicester for more than 12 monthsCredit: Getty
    LW: PHIL FODEN
Manchester City star Foden is fighting for a place in Southgate’s starting XI for the first game against Iran. But he could not have done much more to prove he is deserving of a spot.
The 22-year-old has seven goals and three assists so far this season and would be City’s standout player if it wasn’t for Haaland.
