Penalties are needed when the scores are still level after extra time, with the team who scores the most, winning the match.
SunSport has all the information on the format and when extra time and penalties are used at the World Cup.
Is there extra time and penalties at the World Cup?
During the group stage of the tournament, extra time and penalties are not used.
If the score is level when the final whistle is blown, a single point is awarded to both sides.

However, from the knockout stages onwards, teams are eliminated and therefore extra time and penalties can be required.
A whopping 66 matches have gone to extra time in the tournament’s history, with 30 of those leading to penalty shootouts.
During the 1998 and 2002 world cups, the ‘golden goal’ rule was in place, meaning the first team to score in extra time would in the match.
The normal format returned in 2006 and has been in place ever since.

That first game takes place at 7pm on Monday November 21 so it will be outside school hours.

“We’ll be using the sports hall, the main lecture theatre hall and other televisions will be dotted around classrooms as well.
“I’ve been in the school six years and I’ve seen a transition from rugby to football in that time over both participation numbers and interest.”
He added: “I’m also in a group chat with teachers in England and they were really surprised we were coming off the timetable during school hours.
“They’re not doing anything at all. I don’t know if they’re just used to being in tournaments.

Why isn’t Javier Hernandez playing for Mexico?
Scoring 18 goals in the MLS season as LA Galaxy finished fourth in the Western Conference, Chicharito had an impressive season in North America.
However, this was not enough to earn a recall to the Mexico national team squad for the 2022 World Cup.

Instead, Henry Martin, Santiago Gimenez, Rogelio Funes Mori, RAul Jimenez and Alexis Vega have been named in attack.
The most shocking inclusion is that of Wolves striker Jimenez, who has only made three appearances all season after suffering a long-term injury.
Speaking earlier in the year, Mexico head coach Tata Martino opened up on the future of Chicharito with his national team, stating: “In the case of Chicharito, we are simply going with other centre forwards.
“We will try to choose the 26 players who are closest to our game.” More

According to the Telegraph, the Blues’ Todd Boehly-Clearlake Capital ownership put two members of Tuchel’s staff on gardening leave, allowing them to remain in England with their families.
Being placed on gardening leave means they are technically still contracted to Chelsea.

Tuchel was happy in Surrey, where his daughters have attended school, the report says.

Tuchel arrived at Chelsea in 2021 on a post-Brexit Governing Body Endorsement visa and attempts to get clarity on different options or get help to apply for an alternative visa have proved unsuccessful.
Despite not being allowed to permanently stay in England, Tuchel intends to travel back to London regularly and split his time between the capital and Munich.
Tuchel is said to be waiting for the right opportunity to return to coaching.
