Qatar World Cup chief finally admits horrifying death toll of migrant workers in shock Piers Morgan Talk TV interview

A QATARI chief has finally admitted the horrifying death toll of workers who helped ready the country for the World Cup. World Cup boss Hassan Al-Thawadi admitted as many 500 workmen have died when he was confronted by Piers Morgan.
Hassan Al-Thawadi confirmed the estimated death toll of workers
Piers Morgan confronted the World Cup boss on TalkTV
Piers was quizzing the him during a showdown on TalkTV, which is also available to watch on YouTube.
Qatar spent nearly £200 billion preparing the country to host the tournament after winning the bid in 2010.
Massive infrastructure projects have ranged from completely renewing a whole city to eight brand new stadiums.
But hanging over the tournament has been fears over the treatment of Qatar’s two million migrant workers.

Some estimates said as many as 6,500 had died since the successful bid – something which Qataris had previously been branded a “myth”.
The death toll reported by Qatar last year was just three.
But now, Mr Al-Thawadi admitted the death toll could be as much as 167 times higher than this estimate.
Piers quizzed him on the migrant worker deaths, during which he confessed as many as 500 people had died.

“The estimate is around 400 – between 400 and 500 – I don’t have the exact number, that is something that is being discussed,” Mr Al-Thawadi told TalkTV.
Piers pushed him, saying that this amount of deaths was a “big price to pay”.
The official however said that health and safety standards have vastly improved since they won the World Cup.
Mr Al-Thawadi said: “One is death is a death too many, plain and simple.
“Every year the health and safety standards on the sites are improving, at least the World Cup sites – the sites we are responsible for.
He described the World Cup has providing a “vehicle and catalyst” for improving the condition of migrant workers.
“These are improvements that we knew we had to do because of our own values,” he said.
    “Improvements that had to happen.”
Construction workers helping to build Qatar’s stadiums are reported to have been paid less than £1 an hour.
And some are said to have died as they worked in the blazing heat of Qatar.
Human Rights Watch compiled a report which details how migrant workers are allegedly exploited using the “kafala system”.
Workers mostly from India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal, and the Philippines find themselves in a form of “forced labour”.
The kafala system ties workers visas to a sponsorship by their employer – who is responsible for their legal status.
Migrants can end have to pay up to £2,200 just to secure a job.
And this is something that can lead to them emptying their savings or selling what little assets they have, only to them find themselves trapped in low paying jobs.
Kafala rules then mean the workers can’t even leave – with many being reported to have “absconded” by their employers, which is a criminal offense in Qatar.
Human Rights Watch have said the kafala system as “at the heart” of all abuses of migrant workers working ahead of the World Cup.
Mr Al-Thawadi said the Kafala since has since been “dismantled”.
“[Our] research has shown that abusive legislation and policies, the time pressure, and attempts to contain the exorbitant costs, have resulted in abuses against migrant workers, including work in life-threatening conditions, low wages or illegal recruitment fees,” Human Rights Watch said in a submission to the European Parliament.
“As FIFA prepares to rake in billions in revenue from sponsors and broadcasters, many migrant worker families still mourn the death of their loved ones and struggle to feed their children or pay off loans their loved ones took out to pay illegal World Cup recruitment fees.”

Reports from Spain then suggested that the 34-year-old Real Madrid star was recovering quicker than expected and could even rejoin the squad in Qatar at a later date.
Benzema was never replaced so could technically link back up with Les Bleus.
However, that looks extremely unlikely as he touched down for a ‘week-long holiday’ at a ‘secret location’ today.
A host of photographers were on hand to see the 2022 Ballon d’Or winner, who was flanked by security, make his way out of the airport and into a waiting car.

He was wearing a red baseball cap and a black shirt as he prepared to start his vacation.
L’Equipe are stating that Benzema will stay in a private rental for seven days before returning to full-time training at Real Madrid.
And they also claim to have been informed that the forward is a “long way off” being 100 per cent and that he will refrain from joining the squad until he is.
But should he make a recovery, then Deschamps will have the right to call Benzema back into the France squad.

With one round of group games to go, only three teams have confirmed their spots in the last 16 – France, Brazil and Portugal.
But the number-crunching machine at BETSiE has pieced together all the stats to throw up their estimates for the remainder of the World Cup at the halfway stage of the competition with 32 of the 64 matches played.
And incredibly, the quarter-final line-up is set to be exactly the same as the one predicted before a ball was kicked at Qatar 2022.
However, four of the last-16 teams have changed.

United States, Mexico, Senegal and Belgium were tipped to make it through their groups.
But with all four sides struggling, they have been replaced by Iran, Morocco, Ecuador and Poland who all picked up crucial early wins.
That is far as they get, though, as the quarter-finals see Holland vs Argentina, Spain vs Brazil, England vs France and Germany vs Portugal.
Lionel Messi got Argentina back on track against Mexico and they are expected to see off the Dutch, who have looked unconvincing so far.

‘Ask Alonso’ – Edinson Cavani aims huge dig at Uruguay manager after big World Cup defeat to Portugal

EDINSON CAVANI has aimed a huge dig at his manager after Uruguay fell to defeat against Portugal in the World Cup last night. While their opponents squabbled over who should get credit for goals, the South American side looked toothless up front for the second game running.

They only have a single point to show for their efforts so far and face elimination if they don’t win their last group game.
Veteran striker Cavani, playing in his fourth World Cup, was left on the bench in the opening match against South Korea but started last night in place of follow long-serving striker Luis Suarez.
Despite the switch, Uruguay could not find a way through.
Questioned about the result last night, the former Manchester United striker turned the heat on his manager in what appeared to be a dig at Uruguay boss Diego Alonso.

Asked why the country was struggling, the 35-year-old forward is quoted by Record as saying: “Sad taste for losing. We know that we have great potential to do more.
“It costs, because losing points in a World Cup is complicated. It tastes bitter.

“There are things to improve and we have to prepare the next game as a final, because it is the hypothesis that we have to take the step we want in this group phase.
“What’s going on? Ask Alonso… he can talk more tactically about what’s happening. It’s soccer, sometimes things come out, not others. It’s preparing for the next meeting. Let’s try to correct and do things better.”

But the Inter Milan star was left out of the matchday squad against Serbia.
Onana and Rigobert Song had a dispute over the keeper’s playing style which resulted in a shouting match.
Song is believed to want a more traditional goalie between the sticks but Onana, 26, is very capable of playing out from the back and refused to change his style.
As a result of their argument Onana was removed from the squad and he has flown home from Qatar.

“Representing Cameroon has always been a privilege. The nation first and forever. Thank you!”

Cameroon face already-qualified Brazil in their final group match knowing that nothing but victory will do if they are to reach the last-16.
