‘What’s wrong with our Wags?’ – Germany’s top paper turns on flops’ PARTNERS as they continue World Cup KO inquest

GERMANY’S Wags have been bizarrely criticised for drinking and partying too little as the hangover from their World Cup shambles kicks in.Popular national newspaper Bild asked “What’s wrong with our Wags?” after slating their men for a shock early exit from the World Cup.

The German team’s wives and girlfriends were compared unfavourably to those of England and Wales, who would “drink Qatar dry”.
The astonishing outburst follows withering inquests into Germany’s footballing failure in Qatar.
Japan’s stunning 2-1 comeback win over Spain meant both those sides went through from Group E.
Germany’s own recovery, to beat Costa Rica 4-2, left them only in third place, well adrift of the Spaniards on goal difference.

But it seems Bild were just as unhappy with their players’ Wags.
They appeared to rate them as less joyful than the partners of other teams, even noting that they often stayed in.
Bild wrote: “Not thirsty? Dancing leg allergy? Don’t feel like lunging?”
And in a scorching summary, the paper said, “Be happy that you too are now flying home with your football dwarves!” – before adding: “It can’t go on like this…”

Wales’ Wags were seen out partying and England players’ partners were often spotted on a stroll or out shopping.
But the German squad’s wives and girlfriends stayed out of the spotlight… mostly.
Centre-back Matthias Ginter’s wife Christina reportedly described air conditioning at the stadiums as too cold.
Gemany’s Wags, were, though, invited to stay with their men for two nights.
But that “reward” for drawing 1-1 with Spain was followed just days later by a sudden departure from Qatar following Thursday evening’s incredible drama on the field.

How Argentina lined up against Poland
The South Americans have put together a good run of results after losing to Saudi Arabia on the opening group match.
And they must be in form if they are to progress past a resilient Australia side, with a solid defence marshalled by Harry Souttar.
This will be the first time since 2006 that Australia have reached this stage of a World Cup, and only the second time in the nation’s history.
Graham Arnold’s men will be hoping to go one step further than 16 years ago however which saw them narrowly lose to eventual winners Italy at this stage.

    How did they get here?
Argentina fell victim to the first of many huge upsets in the tournament as far, with Saudi Arabia stealing a shocking 2-1 victory from the grasps of the Lionel Scaloni’s side in their opening fixture.
However they bounced back impressively winning their next two games 2-0 against Mexico and Poland respectively to finish on top of Group C
Australia began their campaign in similar fashion, losing 4-1 to reigning champions France after going a goal ahead.
But like their opposition, consecutive wins in their final two games over Tunisia and Denmark meant Australia qualified in second place, just missing out on top spot due to goal difference.

    Team news
Both sides are set to have fully fit squads to choose from when they face off in the last-16.
However, with such a short turnaround to games, the managers could opt to make several changes ahead of the clash.
Lisandro Martinez could return for Argentina while Nicolas Tagliafico will also aim to start ahead of Marcos Acuna at left-back.
Enzo Fernandes has impressed in recent games and will be hoping to beat Leandro Paredes to a place in the starting XI.
For the Socceroos, Aaron Mooy will be hoping to keep his place while Mitchell Duke will look to lead the line after impressing during the tournament so far.

How Australia lined up against Denmark
Who will be the star men?
Lionel Messi, who will be playing his 1000th career game, has undoubtedly been Argentina’s star man for the last decade, and the PSG forward has continued to impress during the tournament, winning the man of the match award against Mexico.
Premier League duo Alexis Mac Allister and Julian Alvarez will also be looking to capitalise on their good performances against Poland which saw them grab a goal each.
Australia’s Harry Souttar has been their star man of the tournament so far, with the defender keeping a tight ship at the back.

Messi has two goals and an assist for Argentina at the World Cup
Despite conceding four goals to France in their opener, Souttar has played an integral part in helping Australia keep consecutive clean sheets for the first time at a World Cup.
    What’s the head to head?
The last-16 clash will be the first time the two sides have met in 15 years, with their 2007 match ending in a 1-0 victory for Argentina.
It’s the South American side who have the better record between the two, coming out with five wins from seven matches as well as one draw and a single Australia victory in the first meeting between the pair in 1988.

Turkish commentator sacked at HALF-TIME of World Cup clash after reminiscing about fastest goal in tournament history

A TURKISH commentator was sacked during half-time in the World Cup Group F clash between Morocco and Canada.Morocco ran out 2-1 winners to top the group and send Belgium’s “Golden Generation” packing.

But commentator Alper Bakircigil had his viewing of the Morocco spectacular cut short at half-time for mentioning to viewers in Turkey that the fastest ever goal in World Cup history was scored by Hakan Sukur.
The mere mention of Sukur didn’t go down well with his employers TRT and he was replaced mid-match.
Bakircigil was right – Sukur did score the fastest ever goal in World Cup history, in 2002 against South Korea.
However, Sukur’s post-retirement antics make him a controversial figure.

During his career, ex-Blackburn ace Sukur was one of the biggest stars in Turkish football, scoring 51 goals in 112 appearances for his country.

Sukur and his family then fled to the United States after he was accused of playing a role in a failed coup attempt in 2016.
The 112-capped Sukur is now said to be an Uber taxi driver.

Fans all say the same thing as Cristiano Ronaldo has hand in South Korea World Cup equaliser against Portugal

CRISTIANO RONALDO played a key role in South Korea’s equaliser against Portugal at the World Cup.The 37-year-old free agent has just one goal to his name in Qatar but it hasn’t stopped Portugal booking their place in the knockouts.

Wins over Ghana and Uruguay booked the Euro 2016 winners’ spot in the last 16 with a game to spare.
But they face a South Korea side still in with a chance of qualifying for the knockouts.
Ricardo Horta handed Portugal the lead but South Korea drew level just before the half-hour mark.
A corner was swung in from the left-hand side and the ball hit off Ronaldo’s back and fell to Kim Young-gwon.

The defender swept the ball past Diogo Costa keeping his country in the hunt for a knockout place.
But Ronaldo’s involvement has all fans saying the same thing: Great assist.

A third added: “Class assist by CR7.”
Ronaldo won’t be as keen to claim his involvement in South Korea’s goal as he was for Portugal’s first against Uruguay.
The five-time Ballon d’Or winner claimed to touch the ball from Bruno Fernandes’ cross that ended up in the back of the net.
But upon closer inspection, Ronaldo didn’t touch the ball and the goal was awarded to ex-Manchester United team-mate Fernandes.
Ronaldo will also be hoping to have his shooting boots on to attract new suitors.
He had his United contract ripped up on the eve of Portugal’s World Cup group opener after his bombshell interview with Piers Morgan.
Ronaldo took aim at United as well as past and present figures, including manager Erik ten Hag. More

Fans in disbelief as Ghana miss ANOTHER World Cup penalty against Uruguay 12 years after Luis Suarez handball

GHANA fans were left with a feeling of deja vu after Andre Ayew missed a first half penalty in their crucial World Cup clash with Uruguay. The blockbuster Group H clash comes 12 years after Luis Suarez’s dramatic handball and Asamoah Gyan’s subsequent spot kick miss left Ghana devastated in the quarter-finals of the 2010 tournament.

The Black Stars went on to be eliminated by the South Americans on penalties as Uruguay progressed through to the last four.
Ghana had the chance for redemption 17 minutes into the game in Qatar on Friday after Mohammed Kudus was brought down by Uruguayan keeper Sergio Rochet.
Ayew stepped up to the plate for the penalty but it was saved by the 29-year-old Nacional shot-stopper.
And while it was not quite as dramatic as the moment in South Africa, it still proved to be a major turning point.

Less than 10 minutes after Ayew’s penalty miss, Giorgian de Arrascaeta gave Uruguay the lead.
And shortly after the half hour mark, the two-time World Cup winners doubled their advantage to take control of the game.
Suarez celebrated in similar fashion to 12 years ago when he had been sent off and watched Gyan crash his penalty off the crossbar from the touchline.
The scenes will have been sickening for Ghana supporters to see as football fans lamented a second bout of disappointment.

Ghana only needed a point against Uruguay to progress through to the last-16 – providing South Korea did not beat Portugal.
But the Ayew miss from 12 yards ultimately seemed to condemn them to a group stage exit. More

11, We mustn’t forget that South Korea came back from two goals down to Ghana to get to 2-2.
This looks like a tougher task, but Paulo Bento will take some comfort from the fact his side have come back from behind already this tournament.
    South Korea 0-1 Portugal

Stay up to date with all the latest from the Group H clash…
    More penalty heartache…
We have a half-time update for you from SunSport reporter Martin Blackburn…
“More penalty heartache for Ghana at the hands of Uruguay.
“And to rub salt in the wounds, Luis Suarez once again taking centre stage with a couple of assists.
“The Black Stars revenge mission for what happened in Johannesburg 12 years ago is not exactly going to plan.
“Two goals from Flamengo’s Giorgian de Arrascaeta in the space of six minutes have put the South Americans on the brink of the knock-out stages.
“You might have guessed Suarez had a hand in both of his country’s first goals of the tournament so far.
“Yet how different this Group H showdown could have been if Ghana had scored the spot-kick given to them by the VAR for a foul by keeper Sergio Rochet on Mohammed Kudus.
“Former Swansea forward Andre Ayew – who now plays in Qatar – saw his tame spot-kick saved by Rochet.
“Ghana have a lot to do to get back in the contest while Uruguay cannot start celebrating yet. They will need to keep an eye on what is happening in the game between Portgual and South Korea as a goal for Son Heung Min’s men could change the complexion of the group again.”
    Half-time stats.
This is what the match stats are looking like at half-time, with Uruguay really dominating in the game so far…
The match stats between Ghana and Uruguay at half-time.
    HT. Ghana 0-2 Uruguay.
The referee calls the first half to a close, and it is Uruguay who are in the driving seat now, they go into half-time with a two goal lead.
    45+8. Ghana 0-2 Uruguay.
This is more like the Uruguay side that people were expecting to see at the 2022 World Cup.
They have been admittedly excellent in the first half, De Arrascaeta has had a huge part to play in that.
    45+5. Ghana 0-2 Uruguay.
It is half time in the game between Portugal and South Korea, the scoreline in that game is 1-1.
    45+2. Ghana 0-2 Uruguay.
Uruguay look like they have the blueprint set out now for the rest of this game; to be patient and work Ghana.
They play the ball around their defence, and are really going to make Ghana work to get the ball back.
    45. Ghana 0-2 Uruguay.
There will be eight minutes of added time.
    44. Ghana 0-2 Uruguay.
    That is vintage Luis Suarez.
A cheeky, cheeky nutmeg on Inaki Williams in the corner of the pitch.
He drives towards the box, but a tackle bounces back off of him and goes out for a goal kick.
    42. Ghana 0-2 Uruguay.
That looks painful on Alidou as there is a potential stamp on the Ghanian from De Arrascaeta.
He is screaming in pain, and there is not even a hint of action being taken.
    40. Ghana 0-2 Uruguay.
We have an update from Martin Lipton, who can get a real feel for the feeling inside the ground, and this is what he has to say:
“The Ghana fans cannot believe what they have witnessed.
    “Absolutely broken in the stands.
“All those hopes, fading to dust.
“They need to get a grip in the game. One goal and it’s all change.”
    38. Ghana 0-2 Uruguay.
Nunez gets through and sends Baba Rahman to the shops before looking to cut the ball back to Luis Suarez.
He wants a free-kick after feeling like he is fouled, not for the first time in his career.
    36. Ghana 0-2 Uruguay.
Kudus has a go from outside the box for Ghana, but it is wide.
Ghana games have given us nothing but entertainment so far in this tournament, and it is still only the first half.
It is not over yet for the Black Stars…
    34. Ghana 0-2 Uruguay.
Ghana are in real trouble now.
Luis Suarez picked up the ball in the box after a touch from Darwin Nunez. and he lifted the ball up high over Seidu at right back.
It fell to Georgian De Arrascaeta, who took his time and smashed the ball past Ati-Zigi.
    Great finish.

    32. Ghana 0-2 Uruguay.
It’s 2-0! De Arrascaeta has his brace, and what a strike that is!
Assisted by Luis Suarez once again!
    30. Ghana 0-1 Uruguay.
South Korea have equalised against Portugal.
That means as it stands, Portugal will top the group and Uruguay will go through in second place…
    28. Ghana 0-1 Uruguay.
That is poor defensively from Ghana…
A mess of a clearance from Seidu falls at the feet of Luis Suarez, who fires a low shot at goal.
Ati-Zigi really doesn’t do enough with it and it bounces off of the goalkeeper for De Arrascaeta to head home.
Could Ghana face World Cup agony at the hands of Luis Suarez and Ghana once again?
    26. Ghana 0-1 Uruguay.
There it is! Uruguay’s first goal of this World Cup finals!
It’s Georgian De Arrascaeta! Assisted by Luis Suarez!
De Arrascaeta celebrates against GhanaCredit: Getty
    24. Ghana 0-0 Uruguay.
Cleared off the line by Salisu!
Suarez dispossesses Amartey at the back and plays in Nunez, who dinks the ball over the top of Ati-Zigi.
It looks like it must bounce in, but Salisu of Southampton is there to clear the ball off the line.
This game has all the drama of 12 years ago!
    22. Ghana 0-0 Uruguay.
    Missed!
Andre Ayew has missed from the spot, just as Ghana did 12 years ago…
It is a really poor penalty it must be said, it is not powerful enough or precise enough.
Rochet makes the save to his left hand side.

    20. Ghana 0-0 Uruguay.
A yellow card for Darwin Nunez, who is trying to get access to the penalty spot to scuff it up…
It is going to be Andre Ayew against Sergio Rochet from the spot…
    18. Ghana 0-0 Uruguay.
    Penalty for Ghana!
    18. Ghana 0-0 Uruguay.
However it IS being checked for offside by VAR, and we could have a penalty for Ghana here, wouldn’t that be ironic?
    16. Ghana 0-0 Uruguay.
