BETH MEAD surpassed Jimmy Greaves’ record of 13 England goals in a single season as the Lionesses demolished the Netherlands 5-1 at Elland Road.The forward’s brace and a Lauren Hemp volley were among the highlights of a dream night for Sarina Wiegman’s aces – and a miserable one for the Euros 2017 champions.

The game saw Mead take her England goal tally to 14 this term, beating Jimmy Greaves’s record set in the 1960-61 season.
Of her efforts, the forward told ITV4: “I am enjoying my football right now, that is showing on the pitch – just glad I can help the team today.
“We didn’t play great in the first half. We were sleepy and sloppy on the ball, but we reacted really well to the penalty.
“It is tougher opposition, Netherlands haven’t won a Euros and got to a World Cup final for no reason, so it shows the quality.
“These games are for learning but winning and playing well is the confidence we need heading into the Euros.”
It was a case of the future is bright, the future is orange in a dramatic second half as England dazzled in a new away kit reminiscent of the Netherlands’ famous 1970s strip.

And they punished the reigning Euros champs after an evenly matched first half.
The result led Netherlands boss Mark Parsons to describe the hosts as Euros favourites.
But Wiegman insists they are many contenders for the contest’s crown this year.
The England boss said: “I think there are many favourites for this tournament and we are one of them.
“Whether we would lose or win now, we’re not going to sit on a pink cloud, we stay grounded.

“We want to improve what we do well and take the next step in our style of play.
“I think we’re in a good place but we still need to improve.

The second half saw Beth Mead come on for Chloe Kelly with the hosts conceding a penalty a little later, after a VAR check on Alex Greenwood’s foul on Danielle van de Donk.
But the visitors missed the chance to go 2-1 up as Sherida Spitse’s spot-kick hit the post on her 200th appearance for her national side.

MARK PARSONS has no qualms about getting a ticking off from loved ones if his Netherlands aces defeat the Lionesses this evening.And the England-born coach, 35, says his family will be supporting the Euros 2017 champions when they play Sarina Wiegman’s side tonight.

Among the crowd watching the Elland Road duel will be a few of Parsons’ close relatives.
Fans include his eight-year-old daughter who is an admirer of the Dutch side currently ranked the fourth-best international team in the world.
It will be the first time the Netherlands have faced England under the ex-Portland Thorns chief, who enjoyed a trophy-winning six-year spell coaching Chelsea Women’s reserves from 2004 to 2010.
And the team will face off against their old boss Wiegman for the first time since she took charge of the Lionesses last September.

Online abuse of sports figures on social media has been an ongoing issue with many urging tech firms to take tougher measures against accounts posting vile messages.
Fifa research examining racist trolling during Euros 2020 and this year’s African Cup of Nations, found almost half of players from both contests’ semis were targeted.
Last July Bukayo Saka, Jadon Sancho and Marcus Rashford were subjected to horrific racist abuse following the Three Lions’ Euros final loss to Italy on penalties.

Chelsea ace Kirby reflects on relief at earning Lionesses’ squad spot after battling against extreme fatigue

FRAN KIRBY says it was a relief to be selected for Euros duty for England after reflecting on her battle with fatigue last season. And the Chelsea star, 28, has been making use of an oxygen tent in her home as she worked her back to fitness before the tournament.

The Blues forward has not played for the WSL champions since February with the club, at that stage, ruling her out of action for the “foreseeable future”.
The Kingsmeadow ace, voted the PFA Women’s Player of the Year 2021, missed England’s World Cup qualifier wins against North Macedonia and Northern Ireland in April.
However, Kirby featured as an unused substitute in her club’s 3-2 FA Cup final defeat of Manchester City in May.
And she returned to action for England as a sub in their 3-0 defeat of Belgium last time out.
The Reading-born playmaker, who has 54 senior international caps has been training at St George’s Park under the watchful eye of boss Sarina Wiegman.

When asked about her battle to back to fitness the Chelsea star said: “It’s been a journey, especially these last few months.
“But I think as soon as I started to feel better, I was training every day with the mind of being ready for when Sarina announces her squad.

“For me, I was lucky enough to be able to start to feel better towards the end of the season, and hopefully I can use all the advice that I’ve been getting to really push on and go forward.”
In late 2019 Kirby, who began her senior playing career at Reading 2012, was diagnosed with a heart condition known as pericarditis.
This saw her miss much of the 2019-20 term before she made a storming return to match action the following season, earning her 50th England cap last October.

And the forward has turned to a variety of methods to manage her health including the use of oxygen equipment at home.
Kirby added: “There were no specific answers on the tests where they could go it was extreme fatigue and extreme exhaustion.
“I got an oxygen tent put in my house and just learning different things that can help, has opened my eyes and not just to the recovery you may see, but other aspects that go alongside it.
“Throughout my career, I’ve been learning many different things with my journey.

The WSL player added: “I had some amazing people reach out to me and speak to me, not just women’s football fans, other sports, other competitors who have gone through very similar things to me.
“Psychologists have reached out saying that they’re working with players who have the exact same feelings.
“It was helpful in a way that I got to learn so much from other people.
Next month could see Kirby playing for England in a major tournament for the fourth time in her career.
And the player praised the support she received from her club and England staff after winning her fitness battle.
Kirby added: “For me, the biggest drivers are family and friends.
“But I have to say the club (Chelsea) and England were incredible.
“I was seeing a different specialist every day to pinpoint exactly what was going on and getting the oxygen tent getting to go to Barcelona to meet some of the best doctors in sport.

“The doctor messaged me when it got announced I was in the squad and he was like, ‘You deserve this, you’ve worked so hard to get to this point where you are’.

DREW SPENCE is looking to bring a title-winning attitude to Tottenham after leaving Chelsea as a free agent. The former Kingsmeadow ace joins Spurs – who finished fifth in the WSL last term – on a two-year deal.

And the contract includes an option for the Jamaica international to extend her Tottenham career for another year.
The move sees Spence become the first summer signing for Rehanne Skinner’s team, who have aspirations to finish in the league’s top three.

LUCY BRONZE could not ‘say no’ to a Barcelona move with the defender set for a stunning switch to the LaLiga Women’s giants.Spain’s top-flight champs confirmed the shock move via their Twitter account with a photo of the full-back in the club’s famous kit.

It comes ahead of the expiration of the free agent’s Manchester City deal at the end of June, with the player joining Barca on a two-year contract until June 2024.
The former WSL star had reportedly been linked with a move to the USA’s National Women’s Soccer League, 13 years on from playing college football in North Carolina.
However, the England ace, 30, passed her medical for a transfer to the record LaLiga champs at a hospital in Barcelona today.
Of her move, Bronze said: “I’m very happy to play for a club like Barcelona, one of the biggest teams in the world. I really want to start working with the team.”

The switch for Bronze, who won Fifa’s 2020 Best Women’s Player of the Year gong, comes after a two-year stint at Man City, her second spell at the Academy Stadium side.
The player made 31 top tier City appearances from 2020 to 2022 and helped the club to an FA Cup win in 2020 and a league cup silverware this year.
During her first Citizens spell the England star helped the club to league title and cup wins in 2016 and FA Cup triumph in 2017.
Bronze’s switch comes after Barca confirmed the signing of left-back Nuria Rabano and Laia Codina’s return from an AC Milan loan spell.
Her transfer will also see her join a Champions League-winning side for the second time in her career following a trophy-laden spell with French giants Lyon from 2017 to 2020.
During her time in France, the player helped the French side to win nine major trophies including three Champions League crowns.

The England chief is due to reveal her final cut with the group to be trimmed from 28 to 23 players.
Wiegman’s aces will then have a warm-up game against Belgium at Molineux tomorrow evening.
This will be followed by their sternest pre-Euros test yet against 2017 contest champs the Netherlands at Elland Road on June 24.
Daly, who played for Leeds women’s side as a teenager, said: “I need to make the squad first, but being at Elland Road will be so special for me and my family.”

When asked if playing at the ground would be a poignant moment for her, Daly added: “My dad was the biggest Leeds fan I’ve ever met in my life, So it would be an emotional time.
“But anytime playing for England is an emotional time. You’re just so proud.”

On the international stage the Daly, whose versatility was prized by former England boss Phil Neville, is enjoying life under Wiegman’s stewardship.
The Lionesses star, who has 46 senior caps, added: “I put pressure on myself in different positions. But Sarina is brilliant.
“She’s so honest about my role and where she sees me, and I use this as a strength now.

BETH MEAD says Sarina Wiegman is keeping the Lionesses on their toes with the England chief set to name her Euros squad.And the forward, 27, is relishing the possibility of going up against her club team-mates on the national stage should she make Wiegman’s final cut.

A close family bereavement kept the head coach away from the camp for her provisional 28-strong Lionesses group last week.
Her planned Euros squad announcement was delayed as a result.
All eyes will be on the squad list released with Wiegman expected to reveal a trimmed-down total of 23 players on Wednesday, a day before England’s pre-tournament duel with Belgium.
Mead, who was voted Arsenal’s Player of the Season by Gunners’ fans, said: “Sarina is keeping us on our toes and she’ll always expect more.

Last term Mead put on some eye-catching performances for her country as well as the Gunners.
The forward netted 12 goals in eight of England’s World Cup qualifying matches with the team yet to lose a match since Wiegman’s commenced her role in September.

It comes as a report published in May claimed the rising cost of living has led 2,600 grassroots clubs to fold in the past year.
In addition, 58 per cent of parents say affordability had gotten the way of play.
Mead said: “It’s sad to think there are parents who are stressed about whether their kids will be able to play football or if they will have to miss out because of costs.
