Manchester City boss eyes statement win against Chelsea as Citizens aim to gain ground on WSL champs

GARETH TAYLOR insists Manchester City’s duel with Chelsea will not be a revenge mission in his eyes even if his players see things differently. The Citizens’ home clash with Emma Hayes’ side is one of the biggest matches of Women’s Football Weekend with City eager to make up ground on the Blues.
Gareth Taylor says a win against Chelsea would be an opportunity for Man City to gain ground on their rivalsCredit: Rex
And a win for Emma Hayes’ team could see them reduce the gap to leaders Arsenal to just a point.
The clash comes two weeks after City, who are seventh, were knocked out of this year’s delayed FA Cup semi-finals by Chelsea.
When asked whether City will be out to avenge their Cup semis loss, Taylor, 48, said: “I don’t see it as being revenge, I just see it as being a real opportunity.
“The players might look at it slightly different, but again, our challenge has been to keep them grounded, keep them humble, keep them believing in what we do, because we realise that’s the best possible chance that we have.
“We’re coming up against a very good team who are probably ahead of us in a few transfer windows.
“The strength that they have and the depth that they have in their squad is superior to ours. I think it (a win) would be a real statement.”

Hayes, whose side are second and three points behind leaders Arsenal, have centre-back Aniek Nouwen absent and could be without Pernille Harder, who is recovering from a muscle injury.
And the Blues gaffer believes the threat posed by City’s own squad quality should not be discounted despite their injury concerns.
Hayes, 45, said: “They do have a lot of international players. I don’t think people realise that.
“They may be missing internationals, but they have a team full of internationals and we won’t underestimate that.”
This season’s Women’s Football Weekend is coinciding with the FA’s drive to draw more fans to attend WSL games.
Football authorities have set themselves a target of attracting an average crowd attendance of 6,000 at top-flight games by 2024 and 1,000 at matches in the Women’s Championship.
Emma Hayes believes the FA’s target of getting a crowd average of 6,000 at WSL games is achievableCredit: Sportimage
However, Chelsea and two other top tier sides (Arsenal and Everton) currently play at grounds with crowd capacities below 6,000.
On the FA’s targets, Hayes added: “I think it’s achievable. I also think Covid got in the way, and we have to respect that some people, there’s still not quite ready to go out to big events yet.
“But I think as consumer confidence grows and the public feel that they want to put themselves in those situations in more numbers I’m sure it (match attendance) will grow.”

Tottenham 1 Arsenal 1: Miedema’s late show denies Spurs a famous win as rivals share spoils

VIVIANNE MIEDEMA helped Arsenal snatch a dramatic stoppage-time draw with Tottenham in an enthralling Women’s Football Weekend encounter. The WSL ace’s header cancelled out a Rachel Williams goal to deny Spurs’ boss Rehanne Skinner a birthday win at The Hive.

While the result saw Tottenham break their hoodoo of WSL losses to their rivals they were denied a famous win and the chance to leapfrog champions Chelsea to second spot.
Skinner, who turned 42, said: “You come into the game with the players so focused and ready to put in a performance.
“I was just hoping as all managers do, that they pull that together and deliver on that.
“Massive credit to them. I am so proud of their performances and everything they do as a team together. It’s a great point on my birthday.”
Arsenal, who had dispatched their hosts on three previous occasions notching up 11 goals in the process, went on the attack in the opening minutes.
The visitors had some of the strongest chances in the first half hitting the crossbar at least twice in the opening half.
Miedema had an opportunity to open her side’s account following a neat exchange with Noelle Maritz.

The Dutch ace evaded her marker before cutting the ball onto her left foot and forcing a fine 21st minute save from Tinja-Rikka Korpela with her walloped effort.
And the hosts looked to get forward themselves moments later with Kyah Simon’s long ball aimed for Rachel Williams before the visitors knocked the ball out of danger.
Arsenal, who had 19 shots on target, came close to netting near the half-hour mark with Mead crashing the crossbar with a thunderous free-kick.
And an Ashleigh Neville flicked error saw Miedema twist and turn before delivering a low cross in the box which Tottenham’s defenders managed to clear.
The hosts, desperate to keep a first-half clean sheet, were willing to put their bodies on the line.
Maeva Clemaron needed treatment in the 36th minute after blocking a shot on goal with her face.
This was followed by Katie McCabe clanging the woodwork and Kim Little forcing a save from the impressive Korpela after unleashing a shot on the edge of the 30-yd box.
Tempers flared momentarily with Katie McCabe and Maeva Clemaron having an angry exchange in the second halfCredit: Getty
The second half saw Tottenham determined to attack but with their ball in the final third letting them down.
And there was an angry exchange between McCabe and Clemaron in the opening moments with the Gunners ace unhappy with a challenge from the France midfielder.
Korpela pulled off some impressive saves to keep the scoreline level including a superb 50th minute stop to deny Mead the chance to get a shot off in the penalty box.
The hosts went on to take the lead courtesy of Kit Graham shot being blocked and the ball ending up at the feet of Williams who bundled it home.
Later they missed a superb chance to double their advantage with Ashleigh Neville sending her close-range effort over the bar in the 70th minute.

The league leaders would go on to deny Tottenham the win with Miedema heading home from an injury-time corner.
The result saw Arsenal drop two points ahead of their trip to Manchester United.
Arsenal boss Jonas Eidevall said: “We should have won the game. We created so many goalscoring opportunities that we should have been able to win three or four nothing at least.
“We’re disappointed when we look at it overall, but we still need to value this point.”

Tottenham ace Williams eyes Arsenal payback and reflects on juggling Champions League with being a plasterer

RACHEL WILLIAMS is probably the only WSL ace who has had to choose between doing a plastering job or playing in the Champions League. And the genial Tottenham midfielder – who hopes to defeat Arsenal later – laughed as she recalled that moment as a Birmingham player in 2012.
Rachel Williams used to juggle football playing and training with her job as a professional plastererCredit: Alamy
Williams (pictured bending over to right) occasionally receives requests for her plastering services out of season
The Brum side had qualified for the contest for the first time in their history earning themselves a two-legged clash with Italian club Hellas Verona.
Williams, 33, told SunSport: “Back then you didn’t get paid enough (as a player).
“I remember going up to the coach and saying ‘I can’t go to Verona because I’m away for three days. I’ve got a big (plastering) job on’.
And he said ‘what if I could pay you to come away?’ I asked my boss who at the time said to me, ‘I can’t really lose my best plasterer Rach’.
“We managed to come to an agreement where I missed a couple of nights of training so I could get the (plastering) job done and then go to this Champions League game.
“Some days I used to do my plastering work from six in the morning until three or four in the afternoon and then train like a beast.
“A lot of the physical work from plastering actually helped me with stuff that I would do in the gym.
“But you can’t get away with that now with all those little nutrition changes you have to make as a full-time player.

“Now you’re professional, you’re just an absolute athlete.
“I think that’s a credit to all the previous girls and teams that have come before us, that have led the way.”
Williams, who was born in Leicester and manages a plastering business with her partner, has entered her second season as a Tottenham player following her 2020 move to the club from Birmingham City.
This afternoon Spurs, who are currently third, will go with the Gunners at The Hive in the first of six Women’s Football Weekend clashes.
The match will see Tottenham led by their boss Rehanne Skinner, who first spotted Williams’ talents during a trial at Leicester City’s Centre of Excellence when she was 13.
Tottenham boss Rehanne Skinner spotted Williams skills as a footballer when the versatile midfielder was 13Credit: PA
Williams added: “Rehanne saw me playing in the area I grew up in. She was more like a big sister type coach.
“I’ve been around the league a long time, so she knows my attributes and that I can be a bit like all guns blazing, chasing everything down.
“She’s just slowed me down a bit and taught me the game management side of things.
“The relationship we have now is very much that her door is always open.”
Williams has come a long way since those early years where her raw talent as a powerhouse midfielder with an eye for goal was nurtured by Skinner, who is a former England and Arsenal assistant manager.
In 2004 Williams, began her senior playing career at Leicester City Women with two seasons at Doncaster Rovers Belles breaking up her spell as a Foxes player.
And for nine years from 2011, she enjoyed stints at Chelsea, Notts County Ladies and Birmingham City before her 2020 move to Tottenham, who are seen as dark horses for a Champions League spot this term.
The WSL star is part of a group who have played in the division since its creation in 2011.
And she became the league’s top scorer in that historic term netting 14 goals for a Birmingham side narrowly pipped to the title by the Gunners.
This afternoon she hopes to avenge Tottenham’s 5-1 FA Cup quarter-finals loss to Jonas Eidevall’s team in September.
We’d heard a few whispers about teams saying we were going to struggle. We have a big point to prove.Rachel Williams
Williams, who was the team’s only scorer in that encounter, said: “I will reflect on that game and those emotions and the feelings I was feeling,
“I will have those feelings come back to me ready for this game.
“I beat Arsenal a few times (with other clubs) but I think when you come to a club where this is their actual big derby game, you invest in that as well.
“When I took my goal (in the FA Cup) it even surprised me, so I didn’t really do a good celebration.
“I’m saving that hopefully for this game. With our hard work and how we started (in the league) and our belief, there’s no reason why we can’t cause an upset.
“This season is about us just getting on board with the journey Rehanne wants us on.
“We’d heard a few whispers about teams saying we were going to struggle so we have a big point to prove.”

Meanwhile, Arsenal are eager to maintain their unbeaten run in this match which comes in a week in which the FA announced plans to get an average of 6,000 fans attending WSL games.
And Gunners boss, Eidevall, said: “I think our ambitions should be bold and brave in terms of how many people we should try to attract our games.
“I think the product that we have deserves a far wider audience.”

PARIS SAINT-GERMAIN have cancelled their Friday morning press conference following the arrest of Aminata Diallo in connection to an attack on a team-mate.French newspaper L’Equipe says the team are training behind closed doors with the club left stunned after masked men attacked Khiera Hamraoui with an iron bar.

Hamraoui, 31, a midfielder with 36 France caps, was set upon by two masked men in Paris on November 4, in what is thought to have been an attempt to prevent her playing.
She was left needing stitches on her legs and hands and was unable to play in the match against Real Madrid on November 9.
The former Barcelona ace and another PSG team-mate were being driven home by Diallo after a meal out when she was pulled out of the car and attacked.
Diallo, 26, was allegedly restrained by one assailant but did not suffer any physical injuries.
PSG’s press conference cancellation comes amid reports in France stating players are alleged to have received anonymous derogatory phone calls about Hamraoui.
Le Journal du Dimanche reports investigators believe the calls originated from near the prison of Lyon-Corbas.

The newspaper reports a man, who is thought to be a relative of the Diallo and is alleged to have been involved in extortion cases, is an inmate at the prison.
L’Equipe adds Versailles prosecutors granted police permission to hold Diallo in custody for a further 24 hours on Wednesday following her arrest.
The midfielder has since been released from custody without charge.
In an official statement, PSG said they ‘strongly condemns the violence committed’ and that they ‘had taken all the necessary measures to guarantee its players’ health, well-being, and safety.’
The French champions also said: “Paris Saint-Germain is working with the Versailles SRPJ to shed light on the facts. The club is attentive to the progress of the procedure and will study the follow-up to be given to it.”
Hamraoui and Diallo are in competition for the holding midfield spot in PSG’s starting 11.
Diallo has made 64 appearances for PSG following her move to the club from top-flight rivals Guingamp in 2016.

The midfielder has been on two loan spells following her arrival in Paris with stints at US club Utah Royals and Spanish outfit Atletico Madrid.
She has made seven appearances for the French national team since making her senior international debut in 2017.
Hamraoui moved back to PSG on a two-year deal in July after leaving the club in 2016 for spells at Lyon and Barcelona.
The midfielder was part of the Barca side that defeated Chelsea in the Women’s Champions League final in May this year.

On her goal, Nobbs said: “I’ve been waiting for that one. When you play midfield, you want to score goals, and it means a lot to get on the scoresheet
“But I think the main thing is to just keep trying to perform well and help the team win whenever possible.”
The WSL league leaders went on the attack swiftly in the game’s opening stages with Parris forcing a save from Kaylan Marckese within the opening ten minutes.
Arsenal seemed certain to go one up in the first quarter after the Meadow Park ace was felled in the box by Cecilie Floe Nielsen.
But the striker saw her spot-kick saved by USA stopper Marckese in the 16th minute.
However, Eidevall’s side eventually got off the mark with Parris winning a free-kick.

And Steph Catley curving the ball into the top right corner near the half-hour mark.
The second half saw Koge, who won Denmark’s top-flight title last term, attempt to battle their way back into the game.
And the hosts had a couple of decent chances to net early in the second spell.
These included an attempted chip from Maddie Pokorny with the ball sailing over Manuela Zinsberger’s crossbar in the 55th minute.
Pokorny attempted to engineer another forward drive down the right flank.
However, Arsenal countered with a move that led to Parris finding space to execute a spin before smashing in the visitors’ second with half an hour of normal time remaining.

Caitlin Foord notched up their third after latching on to a rebound after Nobbs’ strike hit the crossbar.
A momentary lapse saw Steph Catley lose the ball with Pokorny taking advantage to pull one back for Koge around the 70th minute.
But late goals from Anna Patten and Nobbs saw the Gunners seal a win with the team sitting second in their group ahead of their WSL clash with Tottenham.

Servette 0 Chelsea 7: Kerr and Kirby net braces as Mjelde returns with Blues crushing Swiss outfit

CHELSEA made mincemeat of Servette in a devastating Champions League group stage display.  The Blues shredded their opponents’ back line with four goals in 20 minutes with Sam Kerr and Fran Kirby nabbing braces in a 7-0 demolition.

And fans saw Maren Mjelde return to competitive action for the first time since sustaining a serious knee injury in the Blues’ Conti Cup final triumph in March.
After the game, Player of the Match winner Kerr said: “It was special seeing Maren on the pitch.
“It’s not easy to be injured, everyone knows how hard it is, but we’re all happy for ourselves but more pleased for her.
“It’s been a long journey and you can see it on her face after the game. It meant a lot to her to be out there.”
Blues boss Emma Hayes added: “I’ve always thought that Maren is one of the most underrated players in the world. And I think you can see that in 20 minutes she played.
“She’s a quiet leader who has been the mother hen of this group for a lot of years.”
Before their away encounter at the Stade de Geneve, Hayes spoke of her desire for the WSL champs to be a ‘bit more relentless’ when putting games out of sight.

And within half an hour her team brushed their part-time Swiss opponents aside with a goalscoring masterclass in front of a crowd of 12,782.
Melanie Leupolz opened the scoring in the eighth minute with Millie Bright setting up the Germany ace to slot in the Blues first past keeper Ines Pereira.
And it took just seven more minutes for Servette’s defences to be carved open again with Kirby netting following a through ball from Kerr.
The Australia captain got on the score sheet herself just two minutes later.
Her first came via Guro Reiten’s lofted cross to Leupolz who knocked it down in the box for Kerr to net.
The floodgates opened again moments later with Kerr notching her brace after receiving a diagonal Kirby cross.
The Blues playmaker bagged her own brace after Jessie Fleming darted into the box to tee-up her team-mate who was left unmarked close to the half-hour mark.

Kirby would later return the favour with Fleming finding space in the penalty area to wallop in Chelsea’s sixth close to half-time.
The second spell saw Hayes shuffle her deck with five substitutions with Sunday’s crunch clash with Manchester City in mind.
The changes included Mjelde for Jess Carter in the 66th minute.
But there was no let-up in attack from the visitors with Guro Reiten burying their seventh goal in the second half’s early stages before being replaced by Georgia Fox around the 55th minute.
Servette made a rare foray forward in the 72nd minute with Jade Boho evading her marker to cross into the box, but there was no one there to take advantage.
Fran Kirby was on target twice for ChelseaCredit: Rex
But the Blues held their opponents at bay to wrap up the 7-0 victory and move top of Group A.
Hayes added: “They worked their socks off in the first hour. I said to my assistants who were in the gantry you have no idea how quick that (performance) was.
“With the movement, the finishes, the execution of every action, it could have been 7-0 at half-time, so credit to the players.
“They really decided they wanted to go up a level.”

One in five women receive ‘unwanted physical attention’ at men’s football games, says supporters’ survey

WOMEN are becoming less tolerant of sexist behaviour at football matches. And one in five say they have been on the receiving end of ‘unwanted physical attention’ whilst at men’s games, according to a Football Supporters Association survey.
Fifty-nine per of respondents to the FSA’s survey want to see clubs condemn people exhibiting sexist behaviourCredit: Getty
More than 2,000 match-going female fans were questioned as part of the study carried out by the national body for supporters in England and Wales between August and September this year.
And nearly half (49 per cent) say that seeing sexist behaviour in action infuriated them.
This is a rise from one in three (29 per cent) respondents to a similar FSA survey of match goers carried out in 2014.
Back then, one in four women (24 per cent) say they would brush off sexism they saw at a game by laughing it off.
But this figure has now dropped to one in eight (12 per cent).
And four in ten women (39 per cent) say they would like to see sexists thrown out of football grounds compared to 26 per cent seven years ago.
The FSA say it is encouraging that fans are becoming less accepting of sexism and abusive behaviour at men’s football matches.

Ally Simcock, an FSA board member and Port Vale fan said: “I’ve been going to men’s football for a long time now and have heard my share of sexist comments, but a lot has changed recently.
“Things like the #MeToo movement have helped change people’s perceptions about what they’re willing to put up with, and what is or isn’t acceptable.
“It is heartening to see the change in attitudes over recent years, with fans less likely to be accepting of sexist behaviour, or willing to just brush it off or excuse it as banter.”
Other findings from the survey reveal that:

59 per cent of match-going fans who are women want to see clubs denounce people engaging in sexist behaviour at games.
Seeing sexism at matches makes one in 20 female football supporters not want to attend in future.
51 per cent of fans say high ticket prices as a barrier to going to men’s games. with 45 per cent also citing cost and distance to games as an issue.

Meanwhile, 48 per cent of respondents flagged cost and travelling as the biggest issues preventing them from going to women’s matches.
In response to the survey, the FA says it is committed to tackling discrimination at games.
It is disappointing to see so many female supporters being subject to inappropriate and unacceptable conduct from fellow fansEFL Spokesperson
An FA spokesperson told Sky Sports: “We recently launched A Game For All, our new equality, diversity and inclusion strategy, which outlines our commitment and plans to deliver a game free from discrimination.
“This commitment includes ensuring the increased inclusivity of women, as well as creating safer venues for all, by using innovative tools to deter antisocial behaviour, developing training programmes for employees and stewards, and taking appropriate action against anyone found guilty of abuse within our venues.”
An EFL spokesperson said: “It is disappointing to see so many female supporters being subject to inappropriate and unacceptable conduct from fellow fans.
“As with any insight or feedback we receive, we will consider how it can help improve matchday operations and inform steward training going forward.

“The League and member clubs have worked extensively over the years to grow the diversity of our collective fanbase and ensure that is reflective of the communities in which clubs reside.
“As ever, we will continue to work with the FSA, football’s stakeholders and campaigners operating in this space.
“Having launched our Together Against Discrimination matchday campaign at the start of the season, our message is clear: sexism and discriminatory behaviour is not acceptable – those who do not agree are not welcome.”

Chelsea boss Hayes expects Swiss rivals have learned lessons from losses to Juventus and Wolfsburg

EMMA HAYES reckons Chelsea’s next Champions League opponents may have to suffer to progress in the contest. But her WSL champs will not take Servette lightly.

The Swiss top-flight side hope to reach the competition’s last 16 for the first time and also play an English team for the first time.
However, they are currently rooted at the bottom of Group A following crushing 5-0 and 3-0 losses to Wolfsburg and Juventus in their opening two group games.
Hayes, whose Blues are second in the group, said: “To become streetwise, you have to suffer, you have to experience something. Usually, that’s when you’re defeated.
“For them, as a team, they are not going to be at our level just yet.
“But they’re worthy of being in this competition, and they will no doubt learn from their two previous games.
“From those learnings, I think they’ll add even more in this game.

“They are always a danger, unknown teams, that have lots to gain playing [at home] with a packed crowd. But competition really, really matters.”
Blues skipper Magda Eriksson added: “We know that any team in this competition can cause a threat if you’re not on it from the start.
“We have to be tidy at the back, we have to be ready for anything they might throw at us and be flexible tactically as well.”
Hayes, 45, revealed spectators are unlikely to see Lauren James make her Champions League debut with Chelsea carefully managing the Blues striker’s return to action.

The Blues starlet, 20, named in Uefa’s ‘ten to watch’ female players list this year, was included in the Blues squad that took on Manchester City in the FA Cup semi-finals.
Hayes added: “I’m probably leaning on giving her another 75 minutes on Thursday rather than the gamble for tomorrow because I think we need to just keep the long game in mind.
“Having her available for selection is great, but I think she needs more training days and more physical work.
