Skinner urges Red Devils to be ruthless in attack after Man United see off Brighton in top three battle

MARC SKINNER wants Manchester United to ramp up their ruthlessness in front of goal following their battling 2-0 win on the road.Strikes from Hayley Ladd and Vilde Boe Risa saw the visitors catch Brighton cold in Crawley – easing pressure on the Leigh Park Village boss.

And it led to the end of a winless run stretching back to October 9, whilst gaining ground on Albion with both level on 15 points.
The result saw United temporarily go fourth and one place behind Brighton before Tottenham leapfrogged both sides to go third after a 2-1 defeat of Aston Villa 2-1.
Skinner, whose side Everton in the Conti Cup, said: “That was one of our most dominant performances in terms of a complete package where we defended well, created numerous chances and we built up well.
“The only thing I felt that could be missing is that we have to be ruthless in that final third because it should have been six goals for us.
“We’ve got to keep putting ourselves in position to be in and around the Champions League places.
“We have to try our best to do the things that we’ve done in this game in our upcoming ones.”

Before the match, Hope Powell talked of being under no illusion of results changing quickly for the Seagulls following five wins from their first nine games.
And the hosts, who were without injured Inessa Kaagman, came under pressure early on with Boe Risa a constant threat for the visitors.
The Norway ace and Megan Walsh engaged in an entertaining duel in the game with the midfielder forcing a classy sixth-minute double-save from the stopper.
And Brighton’s Megan Connolly got into a good position on an Albion attack but blazed her 12th-minute effort over the bar.
United – who had 13 shots on target – saw a 21st minute Ladd strike easily saved by Walsh moments before Lucy Staniforth went one-on-one with the stopper before being waved offside.
And Boe Risa had a superb chance to net near the half-hour mark, latching on to a dangerous ball over Albion’s defence with Walsh blocking her shot at the near post.
Just as it looked as if the score would remain goalless at half-time Ladd put the visitors ahead with a deflected injury-time effort.
The second spell saw Powell attempt to ramp up her attack with Danielle Carter coming on in place of Fliss Gibbons.
And Brighton had a decent chance to level around the 60th minute with Victoria Williams’ attempt to bundle in a cross bravely thwarted by Mary Earp.
Vilde Boe Risa netted her first goal in the top tier following her summer switch to Man UnitedCredit: Reuters
But United solidified their lead with Russo’s whipping a ball into the box for Boe Risa to poke home her first WSL goal.
And the visitors saw out the 2-0 win with Brighton facing a tough league clash with Arsenal following a Conti Cup duel with West Ham.
Powell said: “It was not a good day for us although in the second half we did come out a bit better.
“We didn’t really string passes well together in the game.
“We weren’t at the races, but that’s a credit to United as they were very physical and moved the ball quickly.”

Bronze returns for Manchester City as Darren Carter faces first big test at Birmingham helm in the WSL

LUCY BRONZE has given Gareth Taylor a massive fitness boost with her return to action for Manchester City away against Birmingham. The England full-back is expected to make her first appearance this term after recovering from a knee op following Team GB’s involvement in the Tokyo Olympics.

Taylor said: “Lucy is available for a period of the game. Having her back is a great option for the team. We’ve missed her.
“She has proven year in, year out what a good player she is and what she brings to a team.
“To not have had her and many of the others already this season has been really tough on the squad.
“I don’t think any of us anticipated how bad the injury crisis was and we were the ones living it. It was tough.”
Bronze’s expected appearance comes with the Citizens likely to be without the defensive services with of Jill Scott and Demi Stokes
But Taylor revealed influential skipper Steph Houghton could return to training after the festive period.
The Academy Stadium chief added: “Demi’s struggling with an illness – just a normal illness; not COVID-19 – and seems to be struggling, she is a doubt and Jill had an ankle injury when she returned from England.
“Steph we’re anticipating will be back out on the pitch training with the group after the (Christmas) break.”

City’s trip to St Andrew’s will see Birmingham play their first league game under new boss Darren Carter following the club’s sacking of Scott Booth.
The former West Bromwich Women’s coach, 37, enjoyed a 20-year playing career playing for nine clubs from 2001 to this year including Blues, West Brom, Northampton and Forest Green Rovers.
Carter’s first game in the Brum dugout comes with the team currently second from bottom in the table and yet to pick up a win this term.
The St Andrew’s outfit have lost six times to City in the WSL which is their worst ever run against a rival side in the division.
However, Carter believes the team, who have picked up just a point from eight games, has enough quality to avoid relegation.

The Birmingham boss said: “We’re not naive enough to think that we’re going to go shooting up the division.
“The aim is to stay up, that’s the remit. If we can finish second from bottom, then we’ve achieved what was set out when I came in.
“I want us to get some momentum and get some confidence.
“We’ve got a talented group so where’s the ceiling? I think it can be quite high.”

Chambers backs Dowie to find best Reading form with Royals set for ‘frightening’ Chelsea duel in the WSL

KELLY CHAMBERS is backing Natasha Dowie to hit top form after the striker came close to bagging a WSL Player of the Month prize. And the Reading boss, 35, reckons Chelsea are a ‘frightening’ prospect with her side due to face the Blues at home later.

The Royals, who are eighth, have won three of their last four games in the league after a poor run of five losses on the bounce at the start of the season.
Chambers, who won November’s WSL Manager of the Month award said: “We highlighted last month as being a big window for us to pick up points and we put pressure on ourselves to do that.
“When you look at the table and the fact the league is so wide open – apart from Arsenal and Chelsea at the top – that’s what makes it one of the best leagues in the world.
“And If we can get points now going into Christmas then it only does good going up into the table.”
Last month Dowie found the net twice in three Royals games
The former Watford, Fulham, Charlton, Everton and Liverpool striker has made six league appearances so far this term.
And Chambers wants the forward, who sealed a move to England from AC Milan in the summer to ramp things up in attack.
The Royals chief added: “I don’t think we’ve seen the best of Tash Dowie right now, but I think we’re starting to see little bits and glimpses.
“She had a great November. It’s just a case of her building up confidence back in this league and I think there is more to come from her.”

Reading’s recent run of five wins from six across all competitions is a far cry from disappointing results in September that left them languishing near the drop zone.
But Chambers revealed she had no fear of facing the chop during a season in which Everton, Birmingham and Leicester sacked their managers.
The Select Car Leasing Stadium gaffer said: “I’ve got great support from the club.
“There wasn’t ever a time I was looking over my shoulder thinking, ‘what’s going to happen to me?’
“When we got to November, we felt this is our time now and it has to be our time.
“If it was not going to be then we’re going to be fighting at the wrong end of the table.
“And none of us in here wanted that, not players, staff, nobody, so for us to change that around and pick up points, we saw November being a period that we could do that.”
A surprise win for Reading against Emma Hayes’s side could see them leap up to fifth in the table
And it would put them just two points behind Brighton, who are third and occupying a Champions League qualifying spot.
Reading are yet to beat Chelsea in the Women’s Super LeagueCredit: Getty
But the Royals are yet to beat Chelsea in the league having lost eight of their previous 10 games against the FA Cup winners.
Chambers added: “With the squad quality they’ve got they could rotate in a second 11 on the pitch and they’d all be internationals.
“They’ve got some big games next week to go to, so I know there’ll be conscious of that and we’ve got to play our best at the moment.
“I feel we’ve done really well in training this week, but we’ve got to put in a top performance to try and get anything out of the game.”

Arsenal 0 Barcelona 4: Little reckons heavy home defeat for WSL leaders was an ‘honest slap in the face’

KIM LITTLE wants Arsenal to bounce back from a 4-0 drubbing dished out by Barcelona at the Emirates.A Fridolina Rolfo rocket was among the strikes that saw the Catalan side outclass and out pass the Gunners.

The match comes four days after Arsenal – who face Leicester next – fell to a 3-1 FA Cup final loss to Chelsea.
And it saw Barcelona book their Champions League quarter-final spot ahead of a domestic clash with Real Madrid.
The Gunners’ captain said: “We’re disappointed to have lost and conceded four goals at home.
“Barcelona are probably the best team right now and are very hard to play against.

“And I think we really need to go away from this performance as we did from our last one against Barca and look at what those areas are.
“These experiences can be really helpful in helping us to see where our level is at and what we need to aim for. It’s a real, honest slap in the face.”
Jonas Eidevall called for a change in mentality for his players against the best club side in European women’s football.
However, Spain’s champs had other ideas in the clash watched by a 12,232-strong crowd.
Barcelona’s men’s team may have flopped in Europe in this term.
But it is an altogether different story for the women’s side who have won 17 out of 17 games played in Spain and the Champions League.
The visitors refused to give an inch to their hosts with Vivianne Miedema surprisingly starting the game on the bench.
They dominated the ball from the early stages enjoying 74 per cent possession in the first half.
Jenni Hermoso bagged a brace for Barcelona at the EmiratesCredit: Getty
Among Arsenal’s limited chances on goal was a long-range Jordan Nobbs shot in the ninth minute that flew over the crossbar.
But the visitors made their dominance tell taking advantage of some stray passes.
These included Jen Beattie’s under-hit back pass pounced on by Aitana Bonmati who slotted home Barca’s 23rd-minute opener.
It took another six minutes for the visitors to double their lead with Jenni Hermoso netting from close range following a cross from Rolfo.
And Rolfo got on the scoresheet herself walloping a right-footed rocket into the top corner on the stroke of half-time.
The second half saw Eidevall shuffle his deck with Miedema, Lia Walti and Mana Iwabuchi all coming on for Jordan Nobbs, Frida Maanum and Caitlin Foord.
And Nikita Parris prompted a comfortable save Sandra Panos in the 66th minute.
Aitana Bonmati took advantage of a poor back pass to net Barcelona’s openerCredit: Getty
But Barca – who hit the woodwork minute in 52nd minute – went four up with a quarter of an hour of normal time remaining.
Hermoso sealed her brace by tapping in a low cross to wrap up a 4-0 win for the visitors.
And the result leaves Arsenal needing a point from their final group stage game to reach the Champions League quarter-finals.

Watch Chelsea women’s star Sam Kerr brutally BODYSLAM pitch invader to the ground…before getting booked

THIS is the moment Chelsea striker Sam Kerr brutally BODYSLAMS a pitch invader.Incredibly, she was shown a yellow card for the incident which occurred during Chelsea’s clash with Juventus on Wednesday.

The game was briefly paused in the 87th minute as a young man took to the field at Kingsmeadow to take a selfie with Chelsea player Magdalena Eriksson.
Video footage shows him being greeted by boos from the crowd as he enters the pitch, but they soon turned to cheers as Kerr, 28, took action.
As he ambled around the field, Chelsea’s Australia international saw an opportunity to take him down and RAMMED into him.
The male was sent flying to the ground.
Stewards were slow to the melee and had to chase the invader after he climbed back to his feet and ran off the pitch.
The referee did not seem best pleased with Kerr’s actions and booked her for getting involved – despite some thinking she was more deserving of a gold medal.

Eidevall demands mentality change from Arsenal in Emirates duel with Barcelona after ‘hurtful’ FA Cup final loss

JONAS EIDEVALL wants a mentality shift from Arsenal against Barcelona after claiming it was ‘hurtful’ to watch their FA Cup final loss to Chelsea. And the Gunners chief reckons less defending, and more possession could help his side in their clash with Europe’s football queens this evening.
Jonas Eidevall reckons Arsenal can ‘defend better by defending less’ against Barcelona and having more possessionCredit: Getty
The WSL leaders will play the Catalan giants for the second time in the Champions League Group stages, just four days after their disappointing 3-1 defeat at Wembley.
Eidevall, 38, said: “What was really hurtful against Chelsea is that I think if you would have put another jersey on the team and re-watched it, you could never recognise it was Arsenal that was playing the game.
“We didn’t do the things we do and that normally you would associate with us.
“And that means that we’re coming off from that game, and we didn’t even try to play the way we wanted to play. And losing like that, that just feels pointless.
“From a mentality perspective, that is what we need to change going into the Barcelona game.

Arsenal’s duel with Barcelona will take place at the Emirates home of the club’s Prem side with the team facing the Champions League winners at the ground for the first time ever.
However, the WSL aces will be without the services of Tobin Heath with the USA star currently battling to overcome a muscular problem.
The LaLiga Women’s champs come into this clash with 12 wins from 12 games in Spain’s top-flight including a 10-1 demolition of Sevilla last month.

And the club have conceded only TWICE in their last 10 matches across all competitions since their 4-1 trouncing of the Gunners at the Johan Cruyff Stadium in October.
Nevertheless, Eidevall is confident of his side getting a result if they follow their game plan to the letter.
The Gunners boss added: “Barcelona are very mature as a team in choosing the right tool at the right time. That makes them very difficult to play against.
“But I believe in our game plan and we learned things from playing against them last time and studying them.
“It’s the world’s best club team that we’re going to play against. It’s a really exciting challenge.

“We need to have a really good game plan, but we need to be excellent at executing it.
“We need to defend better and we need to defend less. By defending less, we need to have the ball more.
“Against Chelsea, we didn’t have any dangerous possession. That’s the thing we need to change

But the match was momentarily paused when a male spectator darted onto the grass at Kingsmeadow with Sam Kerr sending him tumbling to the turf.
And the Australia ace was cautioned by the ref for shoulder barging the individual who ran on late in the second half and appeared to be attempting to get a selfie with Magda Eriksson.
Hayes said: “He could have waited until the end to have a photograph if he really wanted one. But jokes aside, we do have to think about player safety.
“We’ve seen with the growth of the game there is this sense of the players being more in demand.
“It should serve as a reminder to us all in our stadiums and with our stewards that we’ve got to put player protection first.”
The scoreless result denied the Blues the win that would have seen them reach the Champions League quarter-finals after five group games played.
But Hayes is confident her side will be able to get the outcome they need to reach the contest’s next stages after their final group stage game.

The Chelsea chief added: “I’m extremely proud of the players playing a game of this magnitude so soon after the FA Cup Final
“We got a point and we’re in the driving seat going into the last game in the position we want to be in.
“We know Wolfsburg is a difficult place to go, but we believe in our ability and we’re confident.“
The Blues flew out of the blocks clocking up 14 first-half shots
Erin Cuthbert forced Pauline Peyraud-Magnin to tip her fierce right-strike over the bar inside the first minute.
Moments later Fran Kirby saw her effort smothered by the France stopper.
One of the best scoring chances fell to Sam Kerr with the forward outmuscling her marker before seeing her 27th minute shot whizz across the goalmouth

And the Australia ace thought she put the hosts ahead early in the second half only to see her goal ruled offside.
Juventus had a rare foray forward with Lina Hurtig finding space to unleash a tame shot easily claimed by Ann-Katrin Berger in the 66th minute.
And Millie Bright blazed a late shot over the bar much to her annoyance.
Tempers flared late on in the game with Berger getting cautioned after reacting angrily to Barbara Bonansea’s kick on Erin Cuthbert.
And Kerr went into the book after barging the pitch invader.
The game finished 0-0 with Chelsea staying top of Group A with 11 points and Juventus third but level on points with Wolfsburg.
Should Wolfsburg lose to Chelsea and the Serie A leaders beat Servette it would see Juve progress to the competition’s quarters.
Montemurro said: “We did what we had to do to get the point that we needed and it’s great.

“Chelsea are a fantastic team and for them not to be able to score against us shows we’re on the right track
“I’ve always enjoyed going to Kingsmeadow because you’re going to get a top-quality game.
“You’re going to get the level of football that I believe women’s football is at.”
