      Manchester United 5 Birmingham City 0: Skinner’s aces brush Carter’s team aside to turn up heat on Spurs

      MARK SKINNER wants Manchester United to stop worrying about the battle for third after bringing Birmingham down to earth with a bump.  Leah Galton nabbed a brace in the Red Devils’ blistering 5-0 thumping of their rivals with three of their goals scored in just SIX minutes.

      The result saw United leapfrog Tottenham to third in their first game of the year with both teams vying for a Champions League place.  
      Galton, whose side play Arsenal in the Conti cup next, said: “I’ve been lacking a few goals and being a bit clinical, so it’s nice to start the year off with a goal and two assists.
      On United’s fourth straight win, boss Marc Skinner said: “It (the game) wasn’t a banana skin, but it was something that could have easily thrown us if we didn’t attack it in the right way.
      “All we have spoken about all week is our mentality. 
      “If we want to win, we need to stop worrying about the final (Champions League) places, stop worrying about being top of the table, stop worrying about getting to the finals and start concentrating on each game.
      “It’s our first game back and it’s another five goals and another clean sheet which is excellent.”
      United piled on the pressure early getting their first corner in the second minute.

      Moments later Birmingham were forced to clear the ball off the line following Emily Ramsey saving an earlier Vilde Boe Risa shot.
      But the 0-0 scoreline lasted until the 12th minute with skipper Katie Zelem putting the hosts ahead after Galton’s cut back from the byline.
      United went on to double their lead with Galton poking the ball home four minutes later.
      The hosts, who dominated possession, made it three goals close to the 20th minute with Galton burying her second following a swift cross from Ella Toone.
      The second half saw United bring on Ivana Fuso and Maria Thorisdottir for Ona Battle and player of the match Galton.
      Darren Carter’s side came close to pulling a goal back with Lucy Quinn’s effort hitting the woodwork in the 60th minute.

      But Alessia Russo’s late diving header sealed United’s second successive 5-0 victory with Birmingham facing Reading next.
      Carter said: ”I’ve played plenty (of times) in my career where you get a fantastic result one week and then the game has got a funny way of knocking on your backside the next.

      Birmingham ace Sarri says team can pose a threat to any WSL side following defeat of Arsenal in the league

      VEATRIKI SARRI has warned Birmingham’s rivals they are now a ‘dangerous’ threat after claiming the scalp of WSL leaders Arsenal.Sarri and her team-mates visit Marc Skinner’s Manchester United today following a gutsy win over the Gunners, which followed a run of just one point from ten games.

      The 24-year-old Greek international — who scored in that 2-0 victory — feels Blues are now on a high.
      Former Leeds, Fylde and Sheffield United ace Sarri told SunSport: “Giving everything and not getting the results is heart-breaking.
      “But we’ve proved we can be dangerous. Teams will start taking us more seriously. Hopefully, we can still pose a threat to our opponents.”
      Sarri, who joined Birmingham last January, started out at Greek side AO Chania aged six, before moving to England at 18.
      The striker who switched to the Midlands club under former gaffer Carla Ward, has faced a few battles with injuries during her career.
      These include a knee ligament rupture during a one-term spell with third-tier club Fylde which saw the Greece-born forward play just three times in the 2017-18 season.
      But the now fit forward has emerged as a key figure in Birmingham’s attack this season.

      And she says that a childhood Christmas present of a book on Arsenal and England legend Kelly Smith helped with her own journey to the pro game.
      Sarri said: “When I was younger, I didn’t realise you could make it as a female player. Reading about Kelly’s life story was very inspiring.
      “Her experiences helped me realise I could make it professionally.”
      Birmingham, who are coached by interim boss Darren Carter, are battling to avoid relegation from the WSL.  
      The team have been in the top tier since 2011 and are one of the division’s founding clubs.
      United boss Skinner was at the Blues helm for three years and thinks his old club can beat the drop.
      He said: “I back Birmingham to stay in the WSL — however we’re going to try and dent their efforts.”

      Arsenal confirm signing of Blackstenius with WSL leaders also linked with a January move for Brazil star Souza

      STINA BLACKSTENIUS has sealed her January move to Arsenal, ending weeks of transfer speculation.And it is thought the WSL giants are keen on Brazil defender Rafaelle Souza, 30.

      The league leaders announced Blackstenius’ arrival ahead of their duel with Reading, sharing footage of the player training with her new team-mates.
      The striker, who came to the Gunners as a free agent, will wear the club’s No 25 shirt.
      Of her move, the forward, 25, said: “It feels amazing to be here, I’m so happy to join such a big and great club like Arsenal.
      “I got a really good first impression about this club, they play really good football and I wanted to be a part of that.
      “I feel like I can become a better player in this environment.”
      Blackstenius finished last season as the highest scorer in Sweden’s top-flight, netting 17 times in 21 games for former club BK Hacken.
      Gunners boss Jonas Eidevall, 38, added: “We’re delighted to have signed Stina.
      “She is a world-class talent who will add even more quality to our team.

      “Her game is well-suited to the style we are implementing here at Arsenal, and I’m confident that she will take her game to an even higher level here with us.”
      Blackstenius began her senior playing career at 15 with Swedish outfit Vadstena.
      Prior to her Gunners switch the striker had spells with Linkoping, French side Montpellier and BK Hacken between 2013 and January this year.
      Two league crowns and a Swedish Cup are among the major honours the player won during her stints with Linkoping and Hacken.
      And the forward helped Sweden to silver medal wins at the Rio Olympics in 2016 and the Tokyo 2020 games.

      Eidevall insists Arsenal’s swoop for the highly-rated forward has nothing to do with the future of Vivianne Miedema.
      The Dutch star’s Gunners contract is due to expire this summer with Barcelona and Paris-Saint Germain thought to be interested in the player.
      The Meadow Park chief told reporters: “For me, the arrival of Stina has nothing to with the future for Viv.
      “To sign Stina and make her an addition to the squad, I think is the right way to go.
      On the forward’s attacking play, Eidevall added: “With Stina, especially with the way she has performed in the national team, it’s her ability to score goals in really big games.
      “That is down to a lot of factors, but the main one is that she is excellent at running in behind.
      “It’s a quality that we have missed in the squad. That ability to punish teams that are playing with such a high defending line, so she will help us with that.”

      Eidevall hinted Arsenal had further business to do in the transfer window with a number of their players competing in the Asia Cup this month.

      Blackstenius confirms BK Hacken exit with striker linked to Arsenal and a Women’s Super League move

      STINA BLACKSTENIUS could be set for a WSL switch this month with the striker heavily linked to Arsenal.News outlets in Sweden claim the North London side is a likely destination for the forward following her spell at BK Hacken with the club confirming her exit.

      Swedish paper Goteborgs-Posten reports Blackstenius, 25, is expected to arrive in England in days to sign for a ‘top side’.
      And the player’s contract with Hacken expired at the start of this year with the forward’s departure announced by the club earlier today.
      In her leaving interview with the team’s official website, Blackstenius said: “I am very grateful for everything Hacken has done.
      “I feel proud to have been a part of this club. I only see the club growing in the coming years.”
      In recent weeks Blackstenius was rumoured to be a Manchester United target with Tottenham also thought to be keen.
      But Jonas Eidevall’s side are reported to be leading the race to sign the forward according to BBC Sport.
      Blackstenius, who began her senior playing career at 15, in her hometown Vadstena, has emerged as one of Europe’s most talented strikers in recent years.

      In 2015 the forward was crowned the top scorer of the Women’s Under-19 Euros netting six goals in five games.
      The player joined Hacken in 2020 after stints at Vadstena, Linkopings and French Ligue 1 side Montpellier.
      Her goalscoring prowess helped Hacken win the 2021 Swedish Cup.
      And the side finished second in the race for the country’s league title last term with Eidevall leading Rosengard to the crown before heading to Arsenal.
      Blackstenius, a 2021 Ballon d’Or nominee, racked up 17 goals and eight assists in Sweden’s top division last term.
      The striker helped her nation to a silver medal win at the Tokyo Olympics with Canada claiming gold.  
      The highly-rated forward has scored 22 times in 72 international games for her country.

      Rodman, 19, will be part of the 25-strong USA squad taking part in the USA’s first training camp of the year in Texas this month.
      The forward – seen as one of her nation’s most promising talents – could feature for the side against the Czech Republic, New Zealand and Iceland in the SheBelieves Cup.
      US head coach Vlatko Adonovski told USA Today: “(Rodman) was one of the most exciting players in the league this past season, and she proved that she can be impactful at the professional level in (National Women’s Soccer League).
      “She is still a young player, but we do want to expose her to the environment where she can get her feet wet a little bit
      “And hopefully she can continue growing and show what she was able to do in the league she can do at the international level.
      “We don’t want to rush anything. We’ve got to be patient.”
      Rodman, who began her journey as a club player at the age of 10, has blossomed into a rising star of the NWSL, the top tier of the women’s game in the United States.

      The forwards – both 18 – have joined the Foxes until the end of this season with the club battling to avoid relegation and build on their first win in the league in a 2-0 defeat of Birmingham.
      Each has represented England at youth level with forward Goodwin featuring for the Under-19s and Gregory playing for the Under-17s.
      Bedford, 34, said: “The team are still riding the wave of what they felt from that Birmingham game and they’re confident.
      “The addition of these players will raise the competitiveness in the squad and help us maintain momentum going into the next few games.
      “Missy is a really technically talented forward who secures the ball, holds off players and creates space extremely well.
      “She has also got a great delivery when she gets the opportunity to do so.
      “Freya is naturally left-footed, which adds another dimension to us.

      HOPE POWELL wants better protection for sides in the Women’s Championship following Coventry United surviving liquidation. The Brighton chief was reflecting on a last-minute deal that saw the second-tier side rescued from collapse after a takeover by energy business owner Lewis Taylor.

      However, the club, who are bottom of the Championship, have been hit with a 10-point deduction for breaking the division’s competition rules.
      Before the points penalty was announced, Powell, 55, said: “It’s (Coventry’s situation) has really highlighted how vulnerable at times the women’s game still is.
      “While it has shifted and moved so far very quickly – some players are professional, full-time athletes now and on very decent contracts, there is still a wide gap between the ‘haves’ and the ‘have-nots’.
      “We really have to be mindful of the fact that this is still happening (in the women’s game) and can still happen and we need to ensure that those clubs are protected.
      “The situation that arose at Coventry is something that we don’t want to happen again.
      “If there is an organisation like the PFA (that can help) that would be fantastic.
      “We’re talking about people’s lives here. We have to try and protect the clubs and protect the players in the clubs as best we can.”
