Arsenal ace Williamson named as England captain for Women’s Euros with Millie Bright confirmed as vice-skipper

LEAH WILLIAMSON will captain the Lionesses at the Euros in July with the team looking to win the tournament on home soil.And Chelsea defender Millie Bright has been confirmed as England’s vice-skipper with Ellen White next in line.

The news comes seven months after Williamson, 25, was named England skipper in the absence of Steph Houghton.
The long-serving Manchester City ace has been out of international action since last September following an Achilles injury.
Before then Houghton, 33, has served as the Lionesses captain since she first donned armband back in January 2014.
And the WSL veteran led the team to the World Cup semi-finals in 2019 where they were defeated by eventual tournament winners USA.

Williamson, who made her senior international debut in a World Cup qualifier win against Russia in 2017, said: “This is an incredibly proud moment for me and my family and I am honoured to be asked to lead us at the Euros.

The Lionesses, who are top of their World Cup qualifier group, face North Macedonia away on Friday before a clash with Northern Ireland at Windsor Park on Tuesday.

Chelsea aces Charles and England withdraw from Lionesses duty after positive Covid test results

BETH ENGLAND and Niamh Charles are set to miss the Lionesses’ duel with North Macedeonia with both testing positive for Covid-19. The news comes after their Chelsea team-mate Maren Mjelde returned a positive coronavirus test result on arrival for international duty with Norway.

The FA say Charles, 22, and England, 27, were asymptomatic following pre-camp checks.
And an official statement says the Blues duo have not come into contact with their Lionesses team-mates at St George’s Park.
England and Charles have been in fine form for Chelsea in recent weeks.
The pair have helped the club to win six of their last games across all competitions with the WSL leaders conceding just one goal.

Now the Rotherham-bred sleep therapist has been drafted in to help the Hammers who face Manchester City the WSL later.
The co-founder of Beingwell, a firm of neuroscientists and behaviour experts, said: “At West Ham Women it’s about helping players, coaching and support staff, understand what their actual sleep type is.
“If the team plays a night game that finishes late, they might find it hard to sleep because they have lots of adrenaline, cortisol and wake-up hormones rushing through their bodies.

The turnout is the largest to EVER watch a women’s club football game and is thought to be biggest crowd at football match in Europe this term.
It surpassed the 90,185 at the 1999 World Cup final between the USA and China at the Rose Bowl.
An estimated 110,000 are reported to have attended Denmark’s defeat of Mexico at the 1971 World Cup Final.
However, the tournament was unfortunately not officially recognised at the time.

And Forbes reports that very few tickets are currently on sale for the match which kicks off at 5:45pm this evening.
It is thought the game at the ground, which has a 99,534 capacity, could break the record for the highest number of spectators at a women’s football match.
That record was set back in 1999 at the Rose Bowl in the United States, when a 90,185-strong crowd turned out to watch the USA defeat China in the Women’s World Cup.
For Putellas, 28, playing in front of tens of thousands of fans at a stadium she often visited as a child, is a dream come true.

Barcelona, who defeated Madrid 3-2 in the first leg of the contest’s quarter-final tie, have been on a storming run on the domestic front.

SARINA WIEGMAN is keeping a watchful eye on Chloe Kelly’s comeback with the winger in line for a long-awaited return from injury.The England chief insists the forward needs time to ease back into action with the Manchester City player in line for an appearance at West Ham.

City’s trip to the Hammers’ turf could see the former Everton ace, 24, play her first match following a serious knee injury she suffered last May.
The England boss, 52, said: “We know how good Chloe was when she got injured, and what form she was in.
“She’s doing well at her club, there’s contact all the time (with them), but she hasn’t played a game yet (this season) and first she needs to start playing.
“She’s had a pretty tough injury with her ACL and she needs rhythm now.
“And that’s where it starts, playing at your club, getting consistency at your club level, and then you can take the next step.
“Hopefully she’ll get to her level that she’s capable of. That will probably take a little more time but, yes, we keep a close eye on her.”
Wiegman was speaking after naming her 24-strong squad ahead of the Lionesses’ World Cup qualifiers on the 8th and 12th of April.
