      EMMA HAYES reckons tough memories of Chelsea’s 2014 title race heartbreak provided learning to help her drive the team forward.And the Kingsmeadow chief wants her side to remain humble as the club battles for a fifth WSL crown.

      Ahead of Chelsea’s duel with Tottenham, Hayes, 45, reflected on the feelings that followed a dramatic battle for the WSL title six years ago.
      Like this term’s chase between the Blues and Arsenal, the fight to be the top-flight’s top dogs went to the wire in October 2014.
      Back then Hayes’ aces were in a three-way battle with Birmingham City and Matt Beard’s Liverpool.
      And on October 12 – the last day of the season – just three points separated third-placed Reds from leaders Chelsea with Birmingham second and two points behind.

      But a win for Liverpool against Bristol combined with a Birmingham draw and a Blues’ loss to Manchester City, saw a dramatic Reds title triumph on goal difference.
      Hayes said: “I have horrible memories of that situation, but it’s probably a little bit like that feeling when I got sacked (from Chicago Red Stars).
      “Once you lose something from that position and you get it again, you don’t worry about it the same way.
      “Is it a memory now? I would say it’s learning. I learned so much from that situation and that learning has taken me forward.

      “I don’t stress the way I once did. To be in a position to compete is what I want.”
      Chelsea’s home game against Tottenham on Thursday comes four days after their trip to Spurs with the team overcoming a red card to win 3-1.
      But with two huge final matches against league strugglers Birmingham and top three chasers Manchester United, Hayes wants her side to remain diligent.
      The Kingsmeadow chief added: “We need to remain humble in what we’re doing and make sure we apply ourselves in the best possible way.

      “At this stage of the season getting over the line requires detail, diligence and application of the game plan.
      “I’ve got to make sure I enforce that as much as possible because as much as it was a great win at the weekend, it was just a win.
      “I’m a stickler for not looking too far ahead because that is what I’ve learned (from past experiences).
      “How everybody (in the team) is doing now is the only thing that matters to me and keeping my feet on the floor.”
      Tottenham hope to bounce back from their third loss on the bounce ahead of a trip to Everton and an Emirates clash with Arsenal.
      And Rehanne Skinner’s squad were boosted by Becky Spencer signing a new deal to stay with the club until 2024. 
      The Jamaica goalkeeper, 31, has kept four clean sheets in nine WSL games played this term.

      Spencer said: “It was a no-brainer for me (to sign) with the direction the club is going in.
      “The staff, players and fans have been amazing.”
      Spencer’s new contract follows fresh deals for three of her Spurs team-mates.
      Ashleigh Neville, Kit Graham and club captain Shelina Zadorsky have all extended their stay.
      And Canada centre-back Zadorsky is due to make her 50th Tottenham appearance on Thursday. More

      WSL gets TV audience boost with Sky Sports football director revealing higher than anticipated viewing figures

      WOMEN’S Super League match coverage is pulling in more than 120,000 watchers per game on Sky Sports this season.Its audience reach peaked during Manchester City vs Tottenham last September with around 550,000 viewers tuning in.

      Last June, the channel committed to exclusively air at least 35 games live as part of a landmark broadcast deal which commenced at the start of this season.
      Sky Sports’ director of football Gary Hughes revealed viewing figures for coverage of top tier clashes had been “dramatically up” on what was expected in its first term as a WSL broadcast partner.
      Speaking at this year’s Sports Pro Live event, Hughes said: “Our audience is up dramatically from what we anticipated and what it was on pay TV last year.
      “I think our average is around 125,000 a game — I think that’s up around 175% per cent. 
      “I believe our reach is around six million which I think is around a 200% increase.

      “That’s when all the officials from the Premier League, the EFL and 40 of my girls from the Women’s Super League and Women’s Championship come together.
      “These are the opportunities for all of the officials to get to know each other better and to speak about the challenges they are facing.”
      The potential use of VAR and goal-line technology in the women’s top tier has been a topical issue this season.
      In February EFL and WSL officials held discussions with PGMOL reps over the adoption of a low cost, light version of a video assistant referee.

      “How do you prioritise? Do you want to grow the game and have more spectators first before you go [for] technology?
      “If one of the answers is ‘yes, we want more technology in the game, to support the referees’, then (there are) a lot of questions around how many cameras, which venues, how can we do it, what do we need?
      “We are in close contact with the competition department with the league, to discover all of the possible opportunities for the future. It’s (a case of) wait and see really.”.
      Steinhaus-Webb believes more training for match officials in the WSL could one day see the league lead the way on refereeing in women’s football.
      And she believes sharing ideas on best practices with counterparts in other countries is important.
      The former Bundesliga ref added: “Progressing in our own country is important and efficient and should be our focus.
      “But that being said, you have to a look around what happens in the rest of the world when it comes to refereeing.
      “In England, we are not only watching WSL examples we are also watching international examples, what happens all around the world.
