      When speaking to BBC Sport, the England skipper said:
      “What an occasion. We connected with the fans really well. The three points is all I care about, though.
      “I kept the emotion at bay and focused on the pitch.
      “The communication with each other becomes harder [when the noise is so loud] but I’d take this.
      “We were definitely not at our best but we have something to work with for the next game.
      “Tournament football is different. We should have scored more but it’s knowing that you grow as the tournament goes on.
      “We’re off to a good start and we’ll be ready for the next game.”

      When speaking to BBC Sport, the England boss said:
      “It’s the first game in the tournament and so important to win the game and get a good start.
      “We have shown different faces in this game. Some good, some not so good.
      “In the second half we were too sloppy on the ball and not good enough in the transition.
      “We should have scored a few times but we didn’t put the chances away.
      “Don’t underestimate Austria, they are a very strong team. Overall I’m just happy.
      “It was a great goal [by Beth Mead] and a great finish. Staying calm was the hard part as the ball bounced and she had to control it.
      “I’m not frustrated [that we didn’t score more goals] but we can do better than this.
      “We had some huge plays but we have to be a little calmer in the final stage.
      “We have to recover and then we will review the match and see Norway and prepare for them.
      “The atmosphere was so incredible. It’s what we want.”

      After a nervous start, England gradually grew in confidence before Beth Mead scored the decisive goal to gift them the three points.
      They arguably could’ve scored a few more to earn a comfortable lead, but the Lionesses held on until the end.
      Millie Bright, Lucy Bronze and Lauren Hemp all gave stand-out performances and all three substitutions made a positive impact when they came on late in the game.

      Despite the scoreline there’s no denying that Sarina Wiegman has got a fine-tune out of the squad, who are looking to get their mitts on a first major trophy. 
      The important win continued their redhot unbeaten run of 15 games since she took charge in September 2021.
      She has also got Mead bossing it again as the forward outfoxed her Arsenal team-mate Manuela Zinsberger with an audacious 16th minute chip to put England top of Group A.
      The Gunners star has hit a staggering 13 goals and 12 assists in the nine games she has played under the ex-Netherlands boss.

      Their toughest test is still set to be against dark horses Norway next Monday, with former Ballon d’Or winner Ada Hegerberg back in the fray after a five-year exile from the side.
      England have also cruised past the group stages of the last two major tournaments but yesterday’s win hopefully laid down a marker of what is to come. 
      You could barely see the players to begin with as the smoke from the opening ceremony settled on the pitch. 
      And there were little fireworks from England in the opening stages as they hoofed the ball about with no real end product due to nerves.

      Not that you could blame them with the record pairs of eyes peering down on them.
      Manchester City’s zippy winger Lauren Hemp, 21, was causing havoc in midfield early on. 
      Her twinkle toes were mowed down early on by Arsenal’s Carina Wenninger, setting up an inviting free-kick for the hosts. 
      Hemp stood over it and rifled it over to Ellen White who must have been licking her lips as it was in prime position for the no nonsense centre-forward – but it fired just beyond her.
      The Lionesses still hadn’t quite settled and even the normally cool–as-a-cucumber Lucy Bronze, was easily dispossessed by Laura Feiersinger. 
      It was no surprise England’s all-time top-scorer, White, was responsible for the first shot on target with a bullet header,  but Zinsberger mopped up the danger with ease. 
      England were building and they fired another warning shot, this time with Hemp blazed a header over the bar after being teed up by Bronze’s dipping and curling cross.

      The opener had been coming, but boy was it a desperate scramble.
      Fran Kirby picked out Mead who used ice-cool control with her chest to bring it down before outfoxing her onrushing Gunners teammate Zinsberger with a delicate chip. 
      Initially it looked as though it was hooked clear by Carina Wenninger but goal-line technology gave it and VAR, in use for the first-time ever at the Women’s Euros, concurred.
      There was almost a quick-fire second goal from Hemp after a pretty passing sequence by Millie Bright and Bronze but Zinsberger did well to clear the danger. 
      Hemp pulled the strings again and pinged a cross onto White’s noggin to flash a bullet header inches away from the far post just before the break.
      There was no messing about by Wiegman who hauled off Kirby, Mead and White for United fan Toone, Chloe Kelly on 63 minutes to find another spark.

      But it was actually Austria who had the best chance in the second half. 
      Barbara Dunst pulled the trigger with a jaw-dropping long-range strike to sting the hands of Manchester United shot stopper Mary Earps.
      VAR checked for a potential penalty as two Austria players went down in the box during a scramble to get a shot off – but nothing came from it. More

      “Sarina Wiegman is a massive factor in that. She is a fantastic coach. She has the know-how. She was a player with more than 100 caps for the Netherlands.

      HOPE POWELL – ‘THEY’VE GOT A CHANCE’
      Hope Powell knows exactly what it takes to reach a major final — she just wishes she had shouted her mouth off about it more!

      “The expectation now is so different. The expectation is for this England team to get to the final and win it.
      “The level of pressure on the players and management is so  different to when we got to the final.
      “With Sarina Wiegman, they have a boss who has won the Euros, got to an Olympic final and has such a good pedigree.
      “You need some decisions to go your way. If they get that and everybody stays fit, they’ve got a chance.”
      But Powell warns more support for the grassroots game is needed to  sustain our “conveyor belt of talent”.
      The Brighton chief also claims a lack of diversity at certain levels is concerning. Powell, who managed the national side for five years from 1998, hopes these Euros will help to raise the sport’s profile.
      A recent report warned 6,000 grassroots clubs are at risk of closure between now and next season. The Price to Play study also said  2,600 clubs have already shut.
      And Powell added: “The grassroots game needs to be taken care of.
      “England’s current players won’t play forever — you need the next generation coming through. 
      “It’s really important that pathways are right for them because you need a conveyor belt of talent.
      “The lack of diversity in squads is concerning. But the FA are trying their best with the clubs to address that, so it’s not being ignored, which is the most important thing.”
      LIANNE SANDERSON – ‘NO REASON WHY WE CAN’T WIN IT’
      Ex-England Lianne Sanderson is backing the Lionesses to reach our first Women’s Euros final since 2009.
      But she knows there will be huge heat on Wiegman’s team playing on home soil.

      “We get to a tournament — whether it be the men’s or women’s team — and there is an expectation we’re going to win, which is fantastic.
      “But we should be able to reach the final and there have been previous years when we made the semis of major tournaments.
      “They have everything at their disposal to do well. The fact it is on home soil is an extra incentive.
      “There are players like Beth Mead and Ellen White who’ve been in these situations before and they can help the younger players.”
      Breaking new ground in football while in the spotlight is familiar territory for Sanderson.
      At 14, she became the youngest female professional player in England after joining Arsenal.
      The forward was also part of the legendary Vic Akers side who became the first English club to win the Women’s Champions League back in 2007.
      And the former Gunner — now a  pundit — was one of the youngest stars of the last England squad to reach a Euros final 13 years ago.
      The then 21-year-old came on as a second-half substitute as they were beaten 6-2 by Germany.
      Ex-striker Sanderson added: “Now players are fully professional, they don’t need secondary jobs and the facilities are there.
      “There is no reason why we can’t win it, but I’d be mindful of saying we’re going to based on the quality of some of the other teams.
      “You have France and there’s Norway with Ada Hegerberg back.
      “Spain will also be difficult to beat but I don’t see why England can’t do really well.
      “Since Wiegman has come in, the team has become much more ruthless in front of goal and I think Sarina is more ruthless as a head coach.”
      Asked to compare this Euros campaign with 2009, Sanderson added: “There’s more media coverage now and I kind of like that because I love pressure.
      “I was always the type of player that if we won a penalty in a game, or if it went to a shootout, I’m taking one as I love pressure and seem to thrive on it.

      Bright, 28, is set to earn her 53rd cap for the Euros hosts.
      The journey will begin with England – unbeaten in 14 games under Wiegman – facing Austria at Old Trafford on Wednesday.
