England ace Daly says playing at Elland Road for the Lionesses would be a poignant moment

RACHEL DALY reckons playing for England at Elland Road would be an emotional moment — as her late father Martyn was the ‘biggest Leeds fan’.The Houston Dash captain, 30, will find out today if she is in Lionesses boss Sarina Wiegman’s 23-strong squad for next month’s home Euros.

The England chief is due to reveal her final cut with the group to be trimmed from 28 to 23 players.
Wiegman’s aces will then have a warm-up game against Belgium at Molineux tomorrow evening.
This will be followed by their sternest pre-Euros test yet against 2017 contest champs the Netherlands at Elland Road on June 24.
Daly, who played for Leeds women’s side as a teenager, said: “I need to make the squad first, but being at Elland Road will be so special for me and my family.”

“Leeds have got the biggest place in my heart. Just watching the boys come out when I watch them play is so exciting.

When asked if playing at the ground would be a poignant moment for her, Daly added: “My dad was the biggest Leeds fan I’ve ever met in my life, So it would be an emotional time.
“But anytime playing for England is an emotional time. You’re just so proud.”
Daly, whose ability to play as a full-back, wing-back or forward has earned her plaudits, made her 100th appearance for US club Houston Dash in May.
The National Women’s Soccer League star achieved the milestone during Houston’s 1-1 draw with North Carolina Courage scoring for her side.

On the international stage the Daly, whose versatility was prized by former England boss Phil Neville, is enjoying life under Wiegman’s stewardship.
The Lionesses star, who has 46 senior caps, added: “I put pressure on myself in different positions. But Sarina is brilliant.
“She’s so honest about my role and where she sees me, and I use this as a strength now.
“I’m just happy to play anywhere for the team, whether that be in whatever position I’m put in.
“I just want to be the best I can be and help the team.”

Her planned Euros squad announcement was delayed as a result.
All eyes will be on the squad list released with Wiegman expected to reveal a trimmed-down total of 23 players on Wednesday, a day before England’s pre-tournament duel with Belgium.
Mead, who was voted Arsenal’s Player of the Season by Gunners’ fans, said: “Sarina is keeping us on our toes and she’ll always expect more.
“No team is perfect but she’s striving for perfection and that’s what we want as well.

ENGLAND WOMEN’S Euros squad announcement has been pushed to next week after Sarina Wiegman suffered ‘a close family bereavement’. The Netherlands-born Lionesses chief will be absent from her side’s training camp this week.

The FA say news of England’s final squad for this year’s European Championship will be delayed until the week commencing June 13.
And it is expected Wiegman will return to coach her players in person then.
In the England chief’s absence, assistant Arjan Veurink will take charge of training this week with the team set to face Belgium, the Netherlands and Switzerland later this month.
The provisional squad will continue their preparations this week with one month to go until the start of the Euros.

DEMI STOKES reckons she might not be playing at football’s highest levels were it not for her ‘rough and ready’ grassroots experiences.The Manchester City ace, 30, who became a mum for the first time in May, has fond memories of featuring in a girls’ team battling in a boys’ league.

A journey that has seen the Citizens defender included in Sarina Wiegman’s provisional Lionesses squad ahead of the Women’s Euros in England this July.

“It was rough and ready, but we loved it and I’m grateful we had that opportunity to really push ourselves.

The resort was chosen as the best out of a number of options for the squad after Wiegman was left impressed by the “facilities and accommodation”.
