West Ham to stand behind David Moyes and refuse to sack him despite fan unrest amid Premier League struggles this season

WEST HAM are reportedly set to stick with manager David Moyes despite their struggles in the Premier League. The Hammers conceded a stoppage-time winner against Crystal Palace on Sunday as they were beaten 2-1 at the London Stadium.

West Ham fans booed their team off the pitch at the end of the game, with the club two points above the relegation zone following just four wins from their opening 14 matches.
The home supporters also jeered substitutions made by Moyes towards the end of the clash.
But, according to The Athletic, the east London outfit will keep their faith in the Scottish coach.
Moyes has guided West Ham to sixth and seventh place finishes over the past two Premier League seasons.

He also led them to a Europa League semi-final back in May – which they lost to eventual winners Eintracht Frankfurt.
The former Everton and Manchester United boss has a contract with the Hammers until the end of the 2023/24 campaign.
And he hit back at the booing of fans on Sunday, in particular in response to their anger at Manuel Lanzini replacing Said Benrahma.
Speaking to BBC Sport, he said: “I thought he scored a good goal, but I don’t know if he had much of an impact after.

“There’s a lot of experts out there, isn’t there?”
Moyes’ West Ham have won just one of their last five Premier League games.
And captain Declan Rice admitted after the match that the supporters were right to boo their performance.
He said: “Fans can voice their opinions. They pay their hard-earned money.
“They’re probably right to boo us in a way because we weren’t good enough.
“From the way I’m feeling and the way I saw the lads, I’m devastated. That was a game we had to win.
“Two big games before the World Cup and you lose one of them so you’re counting on the next game.
“In the last couple of years we’d have won a game like this and been comfortable in the table.
“It’s really frustrating. I feel like we’re two different teams [from last season].
“We can keep the ball for fun in some away games and then at home we look a different team.
“It’s been good in Europe but we’re too inconsistent in the Premier League. We’ll bounce back for sure.”
West Ham are five points adrift of the top half of the table, with their final league match before the World Cup break coming at home to Leicester on Saturday.

West Ham midfielder Downes admits he needs to ‘get a lot better’ if his dream of playing for England is to come true

WEST HAM midfielder Flynn Downes has admitted he needs to “get a lot better” if his dream of playing for England is to come true. The 23-year-old joined the Hammers from Swansea for £12million in the summer.
Downes is hoping to play for England one dayCredit: Getty
He came with an impressive stat of being the most accurate passer of the ball across all of England’s top-five divisions.
But he was made to wait for his chance in Europe and the Premier League.
Impressive games in the Europa Conference League forced boss Moyes’ hand and Downes was handed his first Prem start in the 1-0 loss to Liverpool.
Downes was played in an unfamiliar position, but he impressed nonetheless, with the Hammers unlucky not to leave Anfield with at least a point or three.

But Downes is keen to not take his position for granted and insists he has to “get a lot better” if he’s to stay in Moyes’ team.
He is hoping to make a third consecutive league start when the Hammers travel to Old Trafford to play Erik ten Hag’s Manchester United on Sunday.
Speaking to Sky Sports, Downes said: “I just enjoy it.

“I’m not in my prime, I have so much to give. I’ve got to get a lot better.”
Downes has been likened to captain Declan Rice, with both possessing outstanding passing and defensive capabilities.
He is hoping to prove he can be the long-term successor to Rice’s throne should the England mainstay move on for big bucks in the next summer or two.
Downes is also hoping to follow in Rice’s footsteps and play for his country.
The midfielder continued: “I want to play for England.
“That’s my dream. Dec is doing that now – I am learning a lot from him.”
Downes’ move to West Ham moved family members to tears.

West Ham 2 Bournemouth 0: Watch Zouma’s ‘volleyball’ opener as VAR lets goal stand after calls for handball in build-up

KURT ZOUMA scored his first goal since THAT shameful cat-kicking video as West Ham benefited from two PURR-fect VAR calls. In the summer, the controversial Frenchman was sentenced to 180 hours of community service after pleading guilty to kicking and slapping a fragile feline in a social-media post that went viral.

Though he stole the headlines last night for the right reasons, the Hammers defender had a nervous wait to find out if his goal against Bournemouth would stand – as the visitors complained about a ‘volleyball-style’ handball in the build-up.
But having recently chastened Stockley Park officials – he said they should have gone to Specsavers – boss David Moyes was grateful they did not cave into the Cherries protestations.
The usually-beleaguered men in front of the TV screens rightly agreed with the on-field decision by referee David Coote – and even gave West Ham a late spot-kick for handball.
This hard-fought result means West Ham lie in tenth place now, having risen SEVEN places in a congested table.

And reaching their highest position in this stop-start campaign will ease any anxieties there may have been about their previous close proximity to the bottom three.
Under the tutelage of interim boss Gary O’Neil – who played in midfield in West Ham’s promotion-winning season a decade ago – Bournemouth have become a hard side to defeat.
It is all a far cry from the 9-0 annihilation at Liverpool – a record Prem loss – in late August which left Scott Parker’s job untenable.
Since coming in, O’Neill has witnessed three Premier League managers get sacked, two Monarchs sit on the Buckingham Palace throne and three Prime Ministers take up office.

What O’Neill has done impressively in his time in the South Coast hot seat is tighten up a leaky defence, particularly on their travels.
It was clear from the beginning that Bournemouth came here with the sole purpose to counter-attack and frustrate the opposition front line.
And until he came off with an injury, their centre forward Dominic Solanke had two chances to score on the break for the visitors but was both times stopped by West Ham goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski.
Down the other end, two brilliant saves in three first-half minutes from Brazilian goalkeeper Neto thwarted the claret-and-blue troops.
One was a fine fingertip save to turn over a thunderous strike from Aaron Cresswell.
The next was a solid block from Tomas Soucek from close range even though Gianluca Scamacca was flagged offside in the build-up.
The West Ham opener arrived shortly before half-time – to great relief around the London Stadium – but Bournemouth stars marched straight to the ref because the Jarrod Bowen corner struck the hands of Thilo Kehrer.
In the midst of the pinball shenanigans in the Bournemouth box it was Zouma who applied the final touch.

And once VAR correctly ruled in West Ham’s favour – it was not deliberate and did not lead directly to the goal – the French defender celebrated for the first time since scoring against Liverpool in November 2021.
While the poor cat felt the full force of his boot, ten of his 11 Prem goals have now come via his head.
O’Neil was furious and received a yellow card during the break when he told Coote: “That’s a handball, that’s a fact.”
For the second half, Neto did not reappear, having pulled a muscle in his right leg in innocuous fashion as he hoofed upfield a clearance.
In his place came Mark Travers – his last appearance was THAT Anfield mauling – and he was tested on the hour mark by Declan Rice’s chested volley from distance.
Bournemouth made some subs in the second half and gave the home side a few scares with some forays forward.

But Bournemouth substitute Jordan Zemura had his head in his hands when a penalty was awarded against him for handball in stoppage-time from a Vladimir Coufal cross following VAR intervention.
Said Benrahma, who took over the duties from Bowen, did not miss from 12 yards as Moyes’s team won for the fifth time at home in all competitions, a record since the days they used to play at Upton Park.

West Ham’s shocking away record against the ‘Big Six’ isn’t good enough – David Moyes must be more bold

THEY say the definition of insanity is “doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results” – not to David Moyes. The Scotsman could only help but fall to his knees as his West Ham team squandered another opportunity to take points off a Big Six side away from home on Wednesday.

A first half Darwin Nunez header helped Liverpool see off the Hammers, who missed a penalty through Jarrod Bowen and a sitter via Tomas Soucek.
But Moyes played into Liverpool’s hands, fielding eight defensive-minded players from the off, leaving West Ham’s goal hopes solely on Gianluca Scamacca and Bowen.
Moyes lined up with a 4-4-2, deploying Pablo Fornals and defensive midfielder Flynn Downes on the wings.
Despite having pace, power and trickery in his squad, as well as undoubtedly analysing Liverpool’s weaknesses, which would have included right-back Trent Alexander-Arnold, Moyes snubbed Said Benrahma and/or Michail Antonio for Fornals.

The Spaniard is in the team for his undeniable defensive work rate and to cover left-back Aaron Cresswell, who at times, has proven to be defensively vulnerable.
However, despite his defensive pros, Fornals showed at Anfield he offers very little going forward, and one of the keys to winning football matches is scoring goals.
And Downes, who has proven to be an accomplished central midfielder in Europe, made his full Premier League debut out of position, with the aim of neutralising the threat of Fabio Carvalho and Konstantinos Tsimikas.
A trademark safety-first Moyes approach, showing far too much respect to his opposition, which is starting to frustrate.

Moyes has the tools to change the Hammers’ style and play a more expansive, fearless brand of football against the Prem’s big boys but he chooses not to.
Yes, starting Brazil No10 Lucas Paqueta missed the trip to Liverpool through injury, but he could’ve called upon Benrahma or Antonio to put the Reds under the cosh from the first whistle.
The Hammers seeing defeat on the road at the likes of Liverpool, Chelsea, Manchester United, Manchester City, Arsenal and Tottenham under Moyes should come as no surprise.
With Moyes as manager, West Ham have not won an away league game against the Prem’s best.
They’ve taken just FOUR points from an available 72.
To make matters worse for Moyes, he has not won away at Man Utd, Chelsea, Arsenal and Liverpool in 69 attempts in his 24-year managerial career.
Yes, that also includes his 518-game stint as Everton manager, as well as spells at Man Utd and Sunderland.
With polls showing the United Kingdom moving towards ditching Conservatism, maybe it’s time Moyes did the same.

But things went from bad to worse for Moyes’ men as Jarrod Bowen missed a vital spot-kick ahead of the half-time break.
West Ham came out for the second half at Anfield inspired and had more possession than Jurgen Klopp’s Reds as they searched for an equaliser.
The chance to draw the Hammers level fell to Soucek, who was once regarded as one of the best goal-scoring midfielders in the Premier League.
However, the out-of-form Czech fluffed his lines a few yards from goal and Liverpool keeper Alisson made the save with his feet despite diving the other way.

Flynn Downes can help David Moyes change West Ham’s style and aid the evolution of captain Declan Rice

“I HAVE to change the way West Ham play”, said boss David Moyes determinedly ahead of the season. And so the Scotsman signed off on £163million worth of summer transfers to help, acquiring the likes of Brazil’s starting No10 in Lucas Paqueta, and Italy’s up-and-coming No9 Gianluca Scamacca.

Other established international footballers were also brought to East London.
Morocco’s Nayef Aguerd joined from Stade Rennes, Italy’s Emerson from Chelsea, Ivory Coast winger Maxwel Cornet from Burnley and Issa Diop was shipped out to make way for Germany regular Thilo Kehrer.
France 2018 World Cup-winning goalkeeper Alphonse Areola’s loan move from Paris Saint-Germain was also turned permanent following a successful spell at the club last season.
One signing, however, flew under the radar in the Premier League, but the mystery surrounding the player made West Ham fans excited nonetheless: Flynn Downes.

The 23-year-old lifelong Hammer was snatched from under the noses of London rivals Crystal Palace at the last minute with West Ham paying Championship club Swansea £12m for the midfielder.
West Ham had longed for an additional body in the middle of the park to help out Hammers captain Declan Rice and Czech Tomas Soucek, who had run themselves into the ground since Moyes’ December 2019 return to the club, as well as replace the retired Mark Noble.
Despite showing promising signs in pre-season, Downes had to wait for his chance to impress in a competitive game.
It meant watching on as Moyes stuck with the old guard and fall to four defeats in their opening six Prem games.

Downes was also made to wait in West Ham’s Europa Conference League campaign.
He played a grand total of 29 minutes in the qualifiers against Viborg before he was handed his first start against FCSB in the Conference League group stages.
They say, “while you see the chance take it”. And take it he did.
Downes buzzed across the pitch at the London Stadium, effortlessly breaking up play while also showcasing his impressive passing ability – something Swansea fans hailed as some of his best attributes.
But he was mercilessly dropped for the next group game against Silkeborg. Tough love? Perhaps.
He then sat out three Prem games before returning to the midfield in West Ham’s third group game against Anderlecht in Belgium where he turned in another Man of the Match performance.
After the 1-0 win, Moyes hailed: “He played really, really well.
“He’s starting to show us a little bit more. He started a little bit slowly, but he’s really put a marker down tonight.
“I thought he played very well tonight.”
Public praise from the gaffer… Result.
But such a “marker” saw Downes only be handed an additional minute of Prem action in the Hammers’ next league game against Fulham to add to the 60 seconds he got on the opening day against Manchester City.
    Anderlecht at home? No problem.
Downes did the business again last Thursday, reminding fans of a young Rice, despite being born just six days apart.
This weekend’s reward? A seat on the substitutes bench at Southampton as Moyes persisted with Soucek, hoping the once goal-scoring midfielder would play himself into form.
Soucek turned in another lacklustre performance, fluffing his lines for the Saints’ opener but was bailed out by the individual brilliance of midfielder partner Rice, who netted a worldie of an equaliser.
The Czech completed just 64 per cent of his passes at St Mary’s, which has become a recurring problem in the last year when West Ham are in possession, and compared to Rice, who consistently reaches the 90s, it’s not a pretty sight.
If he’s not scoring goals, Soucek struggles to make an impact in a game and his appearances are littered with misplaced passes and flat-footed touches, slowing play down.
It’s also important to note that Soucek’s role has changed with the evolution of Rice, with the England mainstay becoming more of a box-to-box midfielder rather than a holder, bringing his long-term future alongside the £150m midfielder into question.
And despite West Ham being on a five-game unbeaten run, it’s still not too late for Moyes to “change the way West Ham play”.

    Brentwood Busquets
Downes arrived in East London the most accurate passer in England’s top four divisions.
He completed an impressive 92.6 per cent of his passes attempted at Swansea last season.
Now Hammers team-mate Rice came in at second with 91.6.
Downes also played in a side with the highest average possession in their division at 63.8 per cent.
The Hammers managed just 47.7 last term.
Downes also made 78 tackles and interceptions in the second tier, proving to be effective in recovering possession.
The No12 could be the ideal lynchpin in first phase build-up and he will help to keep the ball under pressure.
Downes playing behind Rice and Paqueta in a midfield three could prove to be one of the most dominating combinations in the division.
A midfield three of robust workers with a dash of Brazilian flair.
And with a bit more pace at the back, it could allow the Hammers to play a few yards higher up the pitch.

Downes’ stats in Europe are impressive
    Evolution of Rice
Regular watchers of West Ham would’ve known about Rice’s abilities both on and off the ball way before the rest of the football world started to cotton on.
The former Chelsea academy ace was even branded a centre-back playing in midfield by Gary Neville, which the Manchester United legend has now admitted was wrong.
A defensive rock with dancing feet and the power of a Lokomotive once up and running.
Rice can simply be unstoppable at times, and he’s key to switching defence into attack.
He is one of the best with carrying the ball at his feet and ranks high for successful dribbles as a midfielder.
Rice is also regarded as one of, if not THE best, strikers of the ball at West Ham.
His goals for the Hammers have shown that, including Sunday’s equaliser against Southampton.
Although, Scamacca might pip him to that title with the Italian able to rattle off a thunderous strike at any given time.
Rice checked his shoulder, played a one-two with Said Benrahma, ran into the space and fired a curling effort into the bottom right corner, sending the away end into pandemonium.
Funnily enough, he seems to be better at shooting from outside the box rather than the penalty spot.
Rice himself has admitted he needs to score more goals and by playing with Downes, it could free up some of his defensive responsibilities allowing him to focus more on the attacking aspects of his game.

    Paq a Hammer
The Hammers splashed out £50m Paqueta in the summer, taking him off the hands of last season’s Europa League quarter-final opponents Lyon.
A player with a big reputation. Typical Brazilian ginga style. Flicks, tricks and loose hips.
But he’s also able to do the dirty work, ranking among the top attacking midfielders with defensive actions last term.
Which is why Moyes was delighted to snap up Paqueta and throw him straight into the team.
But like Rice, Paqueta could also be a beneficiary of Downes’ inclusion.
Downes’ snappy approach and pin-point passing would get the ball to Paqueta quicker, helping the midfielder grow his influence in games.
Paqueta also appears to have a good understanding with fellow trickster Benrahma and Scamacca, assisting the Italian with both of his last two goals.

But he has shown glimpses of why boss David Moyes was so keen to get him through the doors at the London Stadium.
Paqueta has picked up an assist in each of his last two appearances with both clever flicks finding in-form striker Scamacca, who made light work of the finishes.
His most recent involvement came in the 3-1 Premier League win over Fulham.
Paqueta was found by Hammers captain Declan Rice deep inside Fulham’s half, and the tricky Brazilian instinctively flicked the ball in behind Fulham’s backline finding Scamacca.

Paqueta also had 66 total touches and impressively recovered the ball seven times, showing he’s more than willing to do the dirty work, making him the ideal Moyes player.
And Scamacca, who’s in rich goal-scoring form having netted six goals from seven starts across all competitions, says “brilliant” Paqueta is one of the keys to keep West Ham winning.
Speaking to WHUFC.com, Scamacca said on Paqueta: “Lucas Paqueta and I have a good connection.

Boss Moyes is as equally in awe of his Brazilian Magnifico, who is a nailed-on starter for Brazil at the 2022 Qatar World Cup.
The Scotsman said: “I think it would be difficult to be a centre-forward who wouldn’t want to play around Lucas Paqueta.
