“I know they left it as late as possible to see if it could be played, but it looked dangerous to me.

But their 11am flight was cancelled due to bad weather and technical problems.
That means the squad has had to resort to a coach to travel the 106 miles to St James’ Park just hours before their 8pm kick-off.
The journey is expected to take three hours if there is no further disruption from traffic or bad weather.
The Met Office is predicting freezing temperatures in Newcastle this evening, which could dip to -1 Celsius.

Erik ten Hag and Rasmus Hojlund already appeared to be feeling the cold as they boarded the coach ahead of their trip north.
United will be looking to bounce back from their disappointing 3-3 draw with Galatasaray in mid-week which left them on the brink of Champions League elimination.

However United are the in-form team in the Premier League over the last five matches with four wins and one defeat.
They have won three on the bounce without conceding and thrashed Everton away from home last time out.

Newcastle also have several key players missing through injuries and suffered their own European setback in mid-week, cruelly conceding a controversial last-minute penalty to draw with Paris Saint-Germain.
But they did dominate Chelsea last week with a 4-1 win at St James’ Park and have won six out of seven games on their home turf.

Following the qualifying session, in which Max Verstappen claimed pole, the Dutchman labelled the weather as “insane”.
He said: “We didn’t know when the rain would hit in qualifying. We thought it would hit… but this is insane weather.”
The dramatic change in weather caught out McLaren drivers Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri, who looked quick enough to challenge for pole, with the latter not even able to register a time in Q3.
Meanwhile, honorary Brazilian citizen Lewis Hamilton came in at P5 behind Aston Martin duo Lance Stroll and Fernando Alonso.
    Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc finished second.
Hamilton’s team-mate George Russell – who came in P8 after being given a two-place grid penalty – said: “It was absolutely crazy. I have never seen a change in weather as drastic as that.”

Back in 2008, wet weather caused a dramatic end to the Brazilian GP which ended up resulting in Hamilton claiming his first ever world title to pip Felipe Massa to the crown in dramatic fashion.
Massa opened legal proceedings over the championship result of the 2008 season owing to the infamous “crashgate” scandal when Nelson Piquet Jr crashed into the barriers at the Singapore GP.
The Brazilian belives F1 authorities did not take appropriate action despite knowing about it.
Massa, 42, urged Hamilton to have his say on the matter, considering it is his F1 title at stake.
He told Planet F1: “No, we haven’t had any communication. Everything that we are doing is not against Lewis.
“I mean, I really respect Lewis as a driver for everything that he’s done, he’s one of the best drivers in the history of Formula One. So many records, with many titles.
“But what I’m doing is against the result of a manipulated race. At the point in the race where the manipulation happened, I was leading, I was first in that race. So it’s nothing against Lewis.
“I really like Lewis as a driver and he’s doing a lot of things for justice, so many different kinds of justice in the world.

Brazil GP qualifying ABANDONED early after freak storm engulfs Sao Paulo as Verstappen beats ‘insane’ rain to grab pole

It was Max Verstappen’s 11th pole of the season while Charles Leclerc will start Sunday’s race in second place.
Aston Martin’s Lance Stroll and Fernando Alonso locked out the second row while it was an all-Mercedes third row with Lewis Hamilton lining up fifth and George Russell sixth.
Hamilton said: “It’s fifth, and fifth is never that great. I did the best I could and hopefully we will have a better race.
“The car was showing signs of decent performance but generally we are a couple of tenths off the top guys.

“But the conditions at the end have us a little bit further back on the grid, but it is difficult to say.”
Russell added: “It was absolutely crazy. I have never seen a change in weather as drastic as that.
“The target is still the podium. Aston Martin seem to have found their form but I am hoping our race pace is better than theirs.
“It will be a difficult fight with Max, but I expect it to be a two of three-stop race, so it is all to play for.”

Verstappen, who is again the favourite, said: “We didn’t know when the rain would hit in qualifying, we thought it would hit but this is insane weather.
“It was all quite hectic in the last lap. It seems that it’s all very close. Last year we didn’t get that right but I think we are a bit better this year.”
Ferrari’s Leclerc, who had been on pole in the previous two races, added: “In my whole career I have never experienced something like that.
“From Turn 4 onwards there was no rain. But the car was extremely difficult to drive, no grip.
“I was thinking about coming in at the end of the lap but I finished it and it was P2. So a really good surprise. A very weird one for everyone at the track.”
The result was hard on McLaren duo Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri, who had looked quick enough to fight for pole position.
But they were caught out by the rain and did not get out on track with enough dry running to set a lap time.
Norris said: “The car was amazing. Easily quick enough to be quickest and on pole. So I am pretty gutted for that to end the way we did.

“Obviously delivering the lap and putting it together in Q3 and everything is a different job, but easily quick enough.
