Shock moment referee forced to use PHONE to check VAR penalty call.. before changing his mind on decision

A REFEREE was forced to use a mobile phone during a VAR check in bizarre and chaotic scenes. The Portuguese Primeira League match between Porto and Arouca ended 1-1 but was dominated by controversy with the hosts demanding the result is “cancelled”.

Arouca scored first via Cristo Gonzalez in the 83rd minute before things took a hectic and unique turn.
Porto were awarded a penalty in the 90th minute with VAR deciding to review the decision.
Referee Miguel Nogueira was then called over to the pitchside monitor but seemed unable to communicate with the VAR hub due to a technical error.
After a lengthy delay, the official was then handed a mobile phone and discussed the possible penalty with his fellow officials.

Nogueira decided to overturn his own call and no spot-kick was given.
The drama continued as Porto were then awarded with another penalty in the 106th minute.
This time the spot-kick stood, but Wenderson Galeno saw his effort from 12 yards saved by Ignacio De Arruabarrena as Arouca thought they had held on to the three points.
Porto continued to pile the pressure on and eventually equalised when Evanilson netted with the clock at 90+19.

Eventually, the final whistle was blown with 22 minutes of stoppage time played.
This all came after Porto striker Mehdi Taremi saw his first-half goal chalked off for offside after a VAR check.
The actions of Nogueira has left Sergio Conceicao’s side raging and they released a shock statement after the game asking for the match to be annulled due to misconduct by the ref.
They claim using the phone and not looking at images of the foul on Taremi for the overturned penalty violated league rules and impacted the outcome of the match.
It is Porto’s second week of drama in a row following their 2-1 win away at Rio Ave last weekend.
Porto trailed 1-0 only to find the back of the net twice in injury time to seal an incredible comeback victory.
The Dragons sit third in the league table after four matches and are in this season’s Champions League Group H with Shakhtar Donestk, Barcelona and Royal Antwerp. More

Arsenal 3 Man Utd 1: Rice and Jesus turn game on its head in stunning late drama to see off Ten Hag’s patched up side

DECLAN RICE and Gabriel Jesus propelled Arsenal to a dramatic late victory on a day of raging VAR controversy at the Emirates.Rice, the £105million summer signing from West Ham, lashed home his first goal for the Gunners in the 96th minute after both teams had been spewing about decisions from Stockley Park official Jarred Gillett.

And sub Gabriel Jesus raced clear to thump home the killer third with a gorgeous finish in the dying seconds to secure a deserved victory for Mikel Arteta’s side.
First Arsenal were convinced they had been denied a penalty on the hour when Kai Havertz was upended by Aaron Wan-Bissaka, only for an overly-busy Gillet to overturn the decision of ref Anthony Taylor.
Then Manchester United saw an Alejandro Garnacho 87th-minute strike chalked off by Gillett for a fag-paper offside decision which looked far from certain.
But Rice, who had been excellent in his deep-lying midfield role, chested down a Saka corner and beat United keeper Andre Onana at his near post with help from a Jonny Evans deflection to secure Arsenal’s third win in four games.
Then Jesus latched on to a Fabio Vieira pass and swivelled past Diogo Dalot before he leathered in the third.
Earlier Martin Odegaard swiftly cancelled out Marcus Rashford’s first-half opener on a day when Arsenal enjoyed the better chances but often looked vulnerable.
Here were two sides who had failed to convince in their opening three fixtures and the early exchanges were suitably disjointed.
Arsenal did most of the attacking but after a crunching challenge from Rice had won possession, Havertz – already infuriating a large section of the Gunners support – completely duffed his shot from six yards out before Lisandro Martinez denied Eddie Nketiah an easy chance.

It got worse for Havertz when the £65million German’s lazy pass was intercepted by Christian Eriksen, who broke forward and found Rashford with an angled through-ball.
Rashford cut inside from the left and, as Ben White stood off him, curled a delicious shot inside the far post.
You wondered what Roy Keane and Patrick Vieira, from the golden age of this fixture, would make of Havertz wafting around this midfield.
Still, Arsenal were level within a minute when England new boy Nketiah fed Gabriel Martinelli and his cut-back found Odegaard in space, allowing the skipper to ram his shot past Onana.
Victor Lindelof was soon booked for mowing down Nketiah with an ugly challenge by the touchline to halt an Arsenal break.
Saka was then cautioned for a nasty lunge at Bruno Fernandes, while he was being fouled by Dalot.
It was fractious and feisty, like Arsenal-United fixtures of old. All that was missing was any sustained degree of quality.
United, bang-average overall, always possessed a counter-attacking threat.
Earlier in the second half, Anthony Martial’s shot was pushed out by Aaron Ramsdale, with Rashford’s follow-up effort expertly blocked by the excellent William Saliba.
Then, just before the hour, raging controversy arrived – and you had to feel for poor old Havertz.
The German finally put a fut right with a neat touch from a cute Nketiah and he appeared to be clipped on the ankle and nudged over by Aaron Wan-Bissaka, as Casemiro also converged on the German.
Taylor pointed to the spot but, bizarrely, his VAR Jarred Gillett claimed a clear and obvious error and the ref went to his monitor and sucked it up.
The ‘high bar’ on VAR overturns this season was now being lowered to world limbo championship levels.
Arteta fumed, along with the vast majority of the Emirates, but United were buoyed by their let-off.
Martinez, their best player for the opening hour, had injured himself in a wild challenge on Nketiah, and was replaced by Harry Maguire as Rasmus Hojlund arrived for a debut in place of Martial.
And Ten Hag’s team began to show greater attacking ambition.
Havertz was put out of misery, hooked to make way for Fabio Vieira, while Jesus arrived up top.
United, though, were opened up by a precise passing move, White feeding Saka, who shot straight at Onana from close range when he ought to have buried the chance.

Garnacho thought he had won it for United in the 87th minute, yet after running on to a Casemiro through-ball and firing past Ramsdale, VAR found him marginally offside when the naked eye suggested Gabriel had been playing him on.
Then came the late, late drama as Rice and Jesus nailed the victory and Ten Hag’s shocking away record against leading Premier League sides continued. More

Fulham furious as Man City goal allowed to stand despite Mike Dean raging ‘it has to be disallowed, it can’t stand’

FULHAM furiously slammed VAR once again as Nathan Ake’s controversial goal was allowed to stand. And Mike Dean raged it simply “has to be disallowed”.

Manchester City defender Ake – completely unmarked – headed in from a corner on the stroke of half-time in their Premier League clash at the Etihad.
And the ball bounced beyond Bernd Leno into the bottom corner of the Fulham goal, restoring City’s lead after Tim Ream cancelled out Julian Alvarez’s opener.
But the Fulham goalkeeper, defenders and coaching staff all reacted angrily when the goal was allowed to stand.
That is because they were adamant Manuel Akanji was interfering with play as he stood in an offside position.
    READ MORE ON FOOTBALL
VAR looked at lots of replays and deemed that the fellow defender did not touch it or impact play.
That is despite Akanji moving towards the ball and missing it with his boot – as Leno waited to dive until after the ball had gone past the Swiss ace.
Therefore, by the letter of the law, Akanji was committing an offside offence by challenging for the ball and attempting to play it.
But VAR Tony Harrington did not instruct referee Michael Oliver to take a look at the replay and the goal was given, prompting further fury from Marco Silva and his team as the gaffer risked yet another yellow card.

Ex-Premier League ref Mike Dean let rip at his former colleagues in the Sky Sports studio.
He said: “In my opinion, no, it just can’t stand.
“He’s jumped over the ball, he has to be interfering.
“The player is there and Leno has hesitated. It just has to be disallowed.”
And fans on Twitter also piled in on the “shocking” refereeing by the VAR.
One said: “Pointless having VAR if they’re allowing goals like that. This is pure cheating.”
Another wrote: “Fulham robbed. That should be given offside. Akanji obstructs Leno’s view clearly.”
A third added: “Akanji in an offside position and blocking Leno’s view, yet Ale’s goal is still given. What a disgrace. VAR is a joke.”

A fourth fumed: “Akanji clearly interfering with the ball and Man City have been given the goal. The league is fixed 100 per cent shocking officiating yet again.”
And a final user commented: “How on earth is that goal given? Akanji is definitely interfering. Leno can’t dive until the ball goes past him! Utter nonsense.”

Fans joke VAR at Luton is ‘just a bloke with an iPhone in row Z’ after it is used for first time against West Ham

FOOTBALL fans hilariously poked fun at a VAR camera angle at Kenilworth Road as Luton hosted a top flight game for the first time in 31 years. The Hatters brought Premier League action to the 10,000-seater ground on Friday night as they took on West Ham.

This was the camera angle football fans found hilariousCredit: SKYSPORTS
It came after a prolonged wait for their opening home match – with the stadium not deemed to be ready to host Burnley last month.
But there were certain quirks that showed why the stadium delay had occurred.
One of those was seeing people working on the turnstiles just hours before kick-off.
And another was the location of one VAR camera.

It appeared to be from the back of one of the stands behind a couple of pillars near the pitch.
It came on Sky Sports’ coverage when the officials were judging whether Michail Antonio was offside before Emerson Palmieiri scored – and he was.
But fans on social media were far more interested in the unusual location of the camera.
One said: “Luton VAR is just a bloke with an iPhone in row z…”

Another added: “Luton’s VAR set-up is just some Nokia 3310s cellotaped to the beams.”
A third replied: “Proper fan cam in the stands at Luton for VAR 😂 Love it.”
While a fourth responded: “That VAR angle at Luton was a camera attached to the first floor window of the small chippy five doors down from the corner flag.”
Luton fans would have been cursing VAR at the end as they were deinied what looked like a clear penalty and a chance to equalise before losing 2-1. More

I’m a former Premier League ref – Sir Alex never gave me the hairdryer but it’s absurd to say Man Utd get more decisions

FORMER Premier League referee Mike Dean has rubbished claims that Manchester United get favourable decisions. The former official has labelled the idea that United get more decisions than other teams as “absurd”.

Dean insists that all teams are treated the same and even admitted that he has got on the wrong side of former Red Devils boss Sir Alex Ferguson during his time as a referee.
But despite Sir Alex’s infamously fiery temper, Dean has said he was never on the end of one of his “hairdryer treatments”.
The VAR and former man in the middle has been speaking about Stuart Attwell’s decision to give United a penalty at the weekend.
Bruno Fernandes converted from the spot with the penalty crucial in the Manchester club’s 3-2 win over Nottingham Forest.

Speaking to the Mail Online, he said: “It’s absurd to think that an official would walk out on to that pitch feeling as if he has to do United any favours. That includes Saturday’s referee Stuart Attwell.
“You may think their penalty against Nottingham Forest was harsh, but there was enough in Danilo’s challenge on Marcus Rashford for it to be awarded.
“Attwell saw that Rashford was caught by Danilo and VAR Robert Jones verified that it was not a clear and obvious error.”
Dean even said that he used to love refereeing at Old Trafford and dispelled any rumours of favouritism towards United by labelling it as a “myth”.

But he admitted he was thankful he was never on the end of one of the Scots’ telling offs.

Spiky Mike Dean is quizzed live on Sky Sports Soccer Saturday after fury over ‘pathetic’ VAR call for Chelsea clash

FORMER Premier League ref Mike Dean became defensive when questioned live on Sky Sports over his “pathetic” VAR call last season.Dean has hit back at criticism after his comments referring to a VAR incident sparked outrage.
Former VAR official Mike Dean says the reaction to his confession has been blown out of proportionCredit: twitter @SkySportsNews
The former referee received a live TV grilling on Soccer Saturday following his revelations about a Premier League game last season.
Dean admitted this week that he made a “pathetic” error in the clash between Chelsea and Tottenham last August.
The now retired official confessed that he failed to correct an on-pitch error because he didn’t want to cause close friend Anthony Taylor “grief”.
He was on VAR duty and chose not to recommend an on-field review after Cristian Romero had pulled Marc Cucurella’s hair in the build-up to Harry Kane’s 96th-minute equaliser.

Dean claimed that he decided against the referral due to the fiery nature of the derby and that his “mate” Taylor didn’t deserve further pressure.
PGMOL chiefs responded to Dean’s comments with a strongly worded statement on Friday afternoon.
But Dean has now defended himself, insisting that his use of the word “mate” has been blown out of proportion.
Dean, 55, said: “It’s funny because that’s all been blown out of context.

“What I’ve said is old news, it’s been out in news reports before maybe four or five months ago, so it’s not new news.
“I refer to him [Taylor] as a mate, I mentioned before that what you’ve got to look at in context is that you might not like some guys in your refereeing group.
“But at three o’clock on a Saturday afternoon, they’re your mates and you want your mates to do well, so the mate thing has been blown all out of proportion.
“I want to support the referee as much as I can; that’s what you do as a VAR.
“Yes, he was wrong and I should have sent him to the screen but to say I didn’t send him over because he’s a mate is an absolute farce.
“And it’s just been blown out of proportion. It’s just people trying to make a story.”
Chelsea fans have come out again to ridicule the bizarre justification.
One fuming fan wrote: “Can’t hide now after admitting you manipulated a game”.
Another added: “‘Blown out of proportion’ 😂 he admitted his decision was influenced by his mate”.
A third wrote: “Absolute disgrace. We’re supposed to believe it isn’t corruption”.

FA refs chiefs break silence on Mike Dean row after ex-official revealed reason for ‘pathetic’ VAR decision

REFEREES bosses have broken their silence after Mike Dean admitted he made a “pathetic” mistake while on VAR duties last season. The former ref revealed that he did not correct an on-pitch decision during the heated clash between Chelsea and Tottenham at Stamford Bridge.

Dean admitted to not sending Anthony Taylor to review an incident between Cristian Romero and Marc Cucurella last seasonCredit: Reuters
Dean did not get Anthony Taylor to review an incident between Cristian Romero and Marc Cucurella.
Romero was spotted pulling the Blues ace’s long-hair during a corner which should have led to a penalty.
However, Dean did not want to cause Taylor any more “grief” and did not call him to review the moment on the monitor.
The game would then end in a draw thanks to Harry Kane netting a goal moments after the incident.

And now PGMOL – the Professional Game Match Officials Ltd – have issued a statement on Dean’s comments insisting that “strongly refute” Dean’s claim that VARs do not intervene.
A PGMOL spokesperson said: “VARs undergo extensive training with the focus centered entirely around effectively working with the on-field team of officials to rectify clear and obvious errors.
“When VARs identify a clear and obvious error by the on-field team and match officials, they should intervene and recommend a review by the referee.
