Before the grudge match, he had signed a new contract which made him one of the UFC’s highest-paid stars.
And even after his most heartbreaking of setbacks, Masvidal warned it would not be the last of him.
He tweeted: “Far from over. I will be back.”
Talk soon turned to what could be next for Masvidal, now beaten in his last three fights.
The Cuban-American, 37, was in 2020 linked with a fight against McGregor, having enjoyed a meteoric rise the year before.
But he would instead fight Kamaru Usman, 34, losing by decision in July 2021 before suffering a knockout in their rematch last April.

McGregor, 33, having also lost consecutively to Dustin Poirier, 33, in 2021, was once again raised as a potential opponent for Masvidal.
UFC president Dana White once said the welterweight contender was ‘too big’ for former two-weight champ McGregor.
But Masvidal’s manager Malki Kawa shot down any suggestion of a size discrepancy having seen McGregor at a recent Bellator event in Ireland.
Kawa tweeted: “I saw McGregor in Dublin. He’s not small. He looked like he walks around 195-200lbs jacked.”
White admitted he does not know what is next for Masvidal or Covington, 34, who secured bragging rights with a points win.
The UFC chief said: “I don’t know, that’s a good question. We knew tonight, whoever lost, ‘What would be next?’ and ‘Where would they go?’
“And I don’t know, sitting right here, right now, I don’t know. On either one of them, even Colby, who won.”

The welterweight contender signed a lucrative new UFC contract before the grudge match but his next fight now remains unclear.
YouTuber Paul named McGregor – who was knocked out by Dustin Poirier last year – as the perfect opponent.
It comes amid rumours the Irishman, 33, is in talks for a trilogy bout against Nate Diaz, 36.
Paul, 25, tweeted: “We already know Conor can’t finish Diaz. Right fight to make is Masvidoll vs Macgregor. 50/50 fight, ends in KO.
“Both can throw and both have weak chins.”
Paul, who is 5-0 as a boxer, has called out the two UFC superstars before but looks unlikely to fight either any time soon.

UFC president Dana White admitted he does not know what is next for Masvidal, or Covington, who beat his former friend-turned rival on points.
White said: “I don’t know, that’s a good question. We knew tonight, whoever lost, ‘What would be next?’ and ‘Where would they go?’

Masvidal’s new contract makes him one of the highest-paid UFC fighters currently.
But White revealed they did not have a plan for the American when agreeing the deal.
He said: “We don’t think that far ahead.
“We sign the kid and you never know what the hell – it’s like you guys will ask me every f***ing press conference what’s gonna happen after this?
“I don’t know. I have to see how the fight plays out. What kind of a fight is it, how did it go?
“And then I decide with the team what’s gonna happen next.”

It has motivated the YouTube star to go one further as he confirmed plans to fight again this year.
Logan told TMZ Sport: “I just started training again, bro. I’m a little sweaty. I’ve been training the last four days.
“Hopefully, I have a fight by the end of the year. I gotta one-up my brother dude, he did a bad thing to Tyron Woodley.
“He’s made it very hard to one-up him, but I will do my best.”
Logan, 26, first boxed in 2018 against online rival KSI, 28, drawing with the Brit in a white collar bout.
But the American lost the rematch by scrappy split-decision when they turned professional a year later.

Logan only returned last June but did so in a shock exhibition bout against Floyd Mayweather, 45, which went the eight-round distance.
He has since alleged the boxing legend has not fully paid him – and claimed to be currently chasing it up.
Logan said: “We’re figuring out the paycheque.
“I’m going for Floyd’s chains, he got two around his neck, two big ones that I like. Those are the ones that I’m going for.”
Brother Jake, 25, is now 5-0 as a boxer after knocking out Woodley, 39, four months after initially beating him on points.
It added to KO’s over YouTuber ‘AnEsonGib’, ex-NBA player Nate Robinson, 37, and retired UFC welterweight Ben Askren, 37.
The Paul brothers used to tease an unprecedented fight against EACH OTHER – but Logan is ready to put that to bed.
He joked: “Man he does, because he’s a psychopath but I’m grown and I’m mature and I will do no such thing.”

Canelo puts money as the only motivation for the callout – but has at least left the door open for talks.
He said on the MMA Hour: “Maybe. Why not? You never say no. My trainer told me about it and I said, ‘Well, if you say.’”
Canelo, 31, added: “It’s not really on my mind. I want a really good legacy for my career and we can talk about other things later.”
UFC legend Conor McGregor, 33, in 2017 was given permission to fight boxing icon Floyd Mayweather, 45, but lost in ten rounds.
Usman, welterweight UFC champ since 2019, eyes a similar bout with Canelo, after returning to the octagon in the summer.
He told told TMZ Sports: “In 2022, I’m gonna shock the world. July, International Fight Week, I’m gonna fight Leon Edwards.
“God willing I get through Leon Edwards, September, Mexican Independence Day, I will stop Canelo Alvarez.”

Tyson Fury claims he would weigh career-heaviest 21 STONE in crossover fight with UFC champ Francis Ngannou

TYSON FURY claimed he would weigh a career-heaviest 21 STONE against UFC heavyweight Francis Ngannou. The champions of boxing and the UFC respectively have gone back and forth for the past few years, fuelling talk of a crossover fight.

Fury recently mapped out a plan to retire after his title defence to Dillian Whyte on April 23, but it would not affect a ‘special fight’ with Ngannou.
And the Gypsy King would pile on the pounds for a bout under boxing rules but in a cage with the smaller 4oz gloves on.
Fury said on the MMA Hour: “We’ve got Francis Ngannou, he’s a big guy, a big dangerous guy.
“I’d love to see, people going on, ‘Oh, it’s not a fair fight in 10oz gloves,’ and that’s correct.

Fury, 33, has called to fight Ngannou, 35, in Las Vegas next year but first returns to the UK in a homecoming at Wembley Stadium.
He had promised to win the undisputed crown after the Whyte fight – only to backtrack and say he will retire after his mandatory defence against Whyte, 33.
But even if he does hang up his boxing gloves, Fury will make an exception to face Ngannou.
He said: “I don’t count that as a real boxing fight.

Wyss, 86, told Blick newspaper: “Abramovich is one of Vladimir Putin’s closest advisers and friends. Like all other oligarchs, he is also in a panic.
“Abramovich is trying to sell all his villas in England. He also wants to get rid of Chelsea quickly.
“I and three other people received an offer on Tuesday to buy Chelsea from Abramovich.”
Abramovich put Chelsea up for sale as Government sanctions threatened his fortune amid Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
He vowed to give any profits from an expected £3billion deal to the victims of the Ukraine war — but he refused to condemn the actions of tyrant crony Vladimir Putin.
The billionaire also revealed he would be writing off the £1.5billion debt Chelsea owed him.

Tyson Fury says he will make exception for ‘special fight’ with UFC star despite retiring after Dillian Whyte bout

TYSON FURY will make an exception to fight UFC champion Francis Ngannou after vowing to retire with a win over Dillian Whyte. The WBC heavyweight king returns to the UK in a homecoming grudge match against Whyte on April 23 at Wembley.

Fury had promised to target the undisputed crown this year before agreeing a mega-money deal to face UFC champion Ngannou in 2023.
But the eccentric Gypsy King has now switched up his plans again, so he claims, by saying he will instead retire after his fight with Whyte.
Fury did however confirm it will not disrupt his goal of fighting Ngannou next year.
And he called for it to be an unprecedented boxing match inside a cage with 4oz gloves on.
Fury said on the MMA Hour: “I don’t count that as a real boxing fight.
“That’s not a boxing fight. That’s gonna be a ‘special’ fight. That will be in a cage in 4oz gloves, in Las Vegas, at the Raiders Stadium.

Ngannou, 35, has no fights left on his current UFC deal but as champion he is still contracted with them for another year.
But should he fail to agree an extension it would allow him to become a free agent and pursue his boxing ambitions.
Fury, 33, last fought in October with an epic 11th round stoppage over Deontay Wilder, 36, which rounded out their trilogy in style.
Challenging Ngannou after his three bouts with Wilder would see the Brit facing arguably the two biggest punchers in the world.
But he is keen to have the spectacle fight competed in the smaller 4oz MMA gloves, evening up the playing field.

“I’d love to see, people going on, ‘Oh, it’s not a fair fight in 10-ounce gloves,’ and that’s correct.
