CONOR McGREGOR has backed Mike Tyson’s retirement U-turn after the heavyweight legend claimed he was ‘revived by the gods of war’.
Tyson is set to face Roy Jones Jr in an eight-round exhibition this month, marking his first fight in 15 years.

Conor McGregor has backed Mike Tyson’s retirement U-turn

The 54-year-old explained his comeback came after his passion was sparked back into life and now he wants to show age is just a number.
He told Jim Gray: “Old guys, that word don’t even make sense. Old? This is just a new time, a new thinking period in our lives.
“This is what we want to do. Sometimes the gods of war, they revive you and say, ‘You have to do more.’
“Now I wouldn’t do it if I didn’t prepare for this. You know, I box people to see if I’m able to do this stuff, so I can do this stuff.

“[My skills are] good enough for this. Good enough to go eight rounds. I’m exerting myself, and this is going to be pretty interesting.
“I’m interested in waiting to see what happens as well.”
The words of wisdom had the approval of former UFC champion McGregor, who tweeted: “Hear! Hear!”

Irishman McGregor, 32, was also vocal about encouraging Anderson Silva, 45, to continue his career after the Brazilian’s farewell fight in the UFC.

He posted: “Real fighters never lose that fire so why try to force it out?
“Simply put time into finding the correct competition and continue on. The right competition is out there, for all levels and ages.

Conor McGregor’s career earnings from £2.5million-a-fight in UFC, £80m from Mayweather bout and £750m whiskey business

WITH Conor McGregor deciding to come out of retirement for the third time in four years, it’s clear to see it’s not for the money.
Since debuting in the UFC in 2013, the Irish star – who is set to fight Dustin Poirier in January – has transcended the sport and has become one of the richest fighters in the world along the way.

But not only does McGregor rake in the cash through competing, his sponsorship deals and business ventures go a long way in making up his estimated Forbes net worth of £80MILLION.
From becoming the highest paid UFC fighter of all time, a historic crossover fight with Floyd Mayweather and a £750m whiskey business – here is how McGregor earned his cash.
    UFC CHEQUES
When the UFC sold for $4.4bn in 2016, McGregor credited his exploits as the driving force behind the deal – and he might be right.
The Irishman did not headline a pay-per-view until his sixth bout, but still landed around £400,000 through fight night purses and bonuses.

After back-to-back featherweight titles wins against Chad Mendes and then Jose Aldo in 2015, McGregor pocketed £400,000 for each fight.
In his following bout, losing Nate Diaz in 2016, he received his first million dollar pay cheque, but tripled his money after winning the rematch.
After beating Eddie Alvarez to become the UFC’s first two-weight champion, McGregor pocketed £2.4m following his purse and performance bonus.

His next two fights, against Khabib Nurmagomedov and Donald Cerrone, he was paid £2.3m, but took home an extra £40,000 for knocking out ‘Cowboy’ at UFC 246.

It takes McGregor’s total earnings from UFC purses and fight night bonuses to around £12m – but his actual profits are much higher.
A large part of his money earned through UFC fights comes in PPV bonuses.
For his loss against Nurmagomedov in 2018, McGregor revealed he made £40m, with reports suggesting he received the same for beating Cerrone.
But his crossover boxing match against Mayweather dwarfs anything he made in the octagon, with The Notorious said to have earned £80million on his ring debut.

    WHISKEY BUSINESS
In 2018, McGregor unleashed Proper No. Twelve into the crowded whiskey market, and that raked in £750m in its first year.
Before tapping out to Nurmagomedov at UFC 229, he became a one-stop promotional tool for Proper No. 12, every press conference saw him clutching a bottle gleefully.
When it finally came to launching the drink on a dry run at the end of 2018, it completely sold out.
In fact at one point it became so popular that Tesco Ireland customers were only allowed to buy two bottles at a time.
And the showman’s penchant as a salesman must’ve paid off when he revealed the official figures in its first year of business.
Taking to Instagram, McGregor wrote: “Over $1b generated in Whiskey sales in my first year! Like it or not, there is a new King in town! Proper Whiskey, liquid sunshine!”
The whiskey is such a hit in America the company sold six months’ worth of stock in its first 10 days of trading.
It eventually sold 2.4m bottles in the first six months of trading.
McGregor predicts it will overtake Ireland’s biggest distillery Jameson – which has been in business for 250 years.

    HE’S IN FASHION
Known for his sharp suits and tongue, McGregor, who once called David Beckham his fashion icon, has always enjoyed splashing his cash on fashion.
Before he boxed Mayweather in 2017, the Irishman was seen in various suits designed by David August Heil – a man responsible for ensuring the likes of Sylvester Stallone, Will Smith, and Robert Downey Jr are red carpet-ready.
At one fitting the pair decided that they should collaborate together.
After a delay, the ‘Drop 1 Look Book’ collection saw the release of limited edition t-shirts, hoodies and caps.
Incredibly, the clobber – costing roughly between £40-£120 – sold out in just a day.
Heil told The Irish Sun: “Our audience is seriously committed and loyal.
“We sold out of a couple of styles within the first 24 hours of launching the site and we didn’t really promote it other than our immediate followers and Conor’s fanbase.”
August McGregor later introduced tailored suits to their range, as well as winter jackets as his empire continues to grow.
It has been estimated that the clothing line brings in a staggering £50m in profits per year.

    SPONSORSHIPS AND THE DIGITAL AGE
In 2018, upon a signing a multi-million pound six-fight deal with the UFC, McGregor renewed a contract with Monster Energy drinks worth somewhere in the region of £750,000-per-year.
Brand McGregor also appealed to Reebok, who made him one of their most high-profile athletes and offered him around £4m per year.
And digitally, McGregor knows what’s up when it comes to selling himself.
He has investments in tech products like The MacTalk App, which allows fans to download McGregor soundbites for £1.09 a pop, as well as his own website, TheMacLife.com – a MMA media outlet and news website dedicated to the man, who can’t help but generate money with his name.

“Once we have that card completely solidified, we’ll make that decision, but she’s got to be near the top of it or at the top because she’s going to be in every combat sports headline around for that one.
“So we have to give her her due.”

Feldman revealed:  “We’re going to do a special series about her. It’s going to be called Paige VanZant: Ungloved.
“We’re going to do a behind the scenes of her getting ready for this fight, her home life and everything leading up to this journey and ultimately her first fight with Bare Knuckle Fighting Championships on Feb 5.”

A fan replied by comparing the shot to one that McGregor landed on Mayweather in the opening stages of their 2017 boxing match.
According to the man himself, his ability has improved in the three years since, and he is waiting to prove it on his comeback.
McGregor, 32, posted: “They won’t let me fight again in 2020. But yes, that boxing bout was 3 years ago now.
“I am infinite times better than I was then. No question! Excited to show! Only got 40 seconds out the last time.”

McGregor has not fought since January as he knocked out 37-year-old Donald Cerrone in the 40 second fight his tweet refers to.
He even retired in June having grown frustrated after being frozen out of the title picture.
McGregor did want to come back before the end of the year, but was denied by the UFC, who already had their remaining two pay-per-view headliners confirmed.
But Dana White has since revealed McGregor’s UFC return to face Dustin Poirier at lightweight is a done deal.

The pair had both been offered a January 23 headliner but contracts were yet to be signed.
Now it appears an agreement has now been reached, after White addressed the situation following Anderson Silva’s final UFC fight.
White said: “The fight’s done, I think so, yeah.
“As far as I know it’s done.”

McGregor – whose Proper 12 whiskey sponsored the fight – hailed the 25-year-old following the showstopping finish.
But the Irish UFC star also sent his well-wished to Mexican Santa Cruz, who was knocked out cold.
McGregor, 32, tweeted: “My lord! What a vicious uppercut that was.
“Praying for the health and safety of Santa Cruz there.

“The young man “Tank” Davis has some serious venom in that back hand shot. Incredible!”
Davis, 25, slipped on the outside and bowled in an uppercut that bounced off Santa Cruz’s chin and left the four-weight champion out for the count.
Afterwards, he said: “He was just right there for it.

“He’s a guy that he punches but he doesn’t try and get out of the way when he punches.

“There’s nowhere he could have went as the ropes were there, that’s how a professional fighter knows, they adapt to the fight.
“He’s a tough warrior a strong Mexican, he came to fight, he came ready but I was just a better person tonight.”
Davis closed the show in front of his mentor and promoter Floyd Mayweather.

He did return a year later for a one round demolition job against featherweight kickboxer Tenshin Nasukawa in Japan.
Now, the 43-year-old stated he could fight once more, but ruled out returning to challenge the best boxing has to offer.
Instead, Mayweather is ‘absolutely’ willing to get in the ring for another exhibition bout or against an MMA fighter.
He told CNN: “As of right now, I’m doing exhibitions. I’m 100 per cent sure that I’m not fighting against any boxer anymore.

“So, that’s out of the question. I mean, just my faculties mean a lot to me.
“Money don’t make me, I make money and my health is more important than money.
“As far as me doing exhibitions and me fighting MMA guys, will I do that in a boxing ring? Absolutely.”
Mayweather last November announced online that he was ‘coming out of retirement’ and would work with UFC boss Dana White on a comeback.

The two are still in talks, and Mayweather has been teasing a return having continued to train in his Las Vegas gym.
UFC lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov revealed he has been approached to fight the 50-0 icon in the Middle East.
Mayweather previously talked up a fight with Khabib, 32, or rematching McGregor, also 32, but wanted £230million for each bout.
The former five-division champion and also promoter, has kept a good relationship with White, opening the door for another crossover event.
Mayweather said: “I take my hat off to everybody that’s in combat sports, I respect all combat sports, I love the competitors, I love the guys.
“Dana White is doing a helluva’ job, I want to say tell Dana to keep up the good work.
“I actually have a guy that’s in combat sports that’s in the UFC. Of course, I’m for it all.
“In the past, me and Dana have bumped heads but that’s a part of life. You go through ups and downs but we live, we learn and we laugh.”

In the final spar the ex-featherweight and lightweight champion lands some telling combinations and counters.
McGregor would go on to lose his ring debut against Floyd Mayweather in August 2017, winning some of the early battles before tiring and being stopped in the 10th round.

The Irish southpaw would later admit he should have gone back to work with his old coaches at the Crumlin ABC before the money-spinning crossover bout.
For his UFC return in January, McGregor did spend time at his first gym and even brought head trainer Phil Sutcliffe to Vegas to have him in his corner.

I learned may things boxing in Crumlin where I grew up, and my deep love is why I do this today. I will be in Octagon again soon and fully expect to box again.
    McGregor on his fighting future

Earlier this year, McGregor’s head coach John Kavanagh told journalist Gareth A Davies he would be expect the UFC star to box again.

The trainer said: “I’d honestly be surprised if Conor doesn’t have a boxing match in the next 12-18 months.
“He loves boxing. He loved the training for the Mayweather fight. It has to be something big, whatever he does seems to always get bigger. He’s always looking for that next step up.”
McGregor would later tell Bleacher Report that he “fully” expects to box again.

He said: “I plan on being around for a long time inside the Octagon, boxing ring, and well beyond my fighting career.
“I love the fight game. I learned may things boxing in Crumlin where I grew up, and my deep love is why I do this today.
“I will be in Octagon again soon and fully expect to box again.”
And plans are afoot for the 32-year-old to step back into the ring and face Manny Pacquiao with a fight reportedly pencilled in for the Middle East next year.

Eddie Hearn planning for UFC-style promotion in boxing in 2021 and axing world title belts ‘as there’s too many’

EDDIE HEARN wants to follow in the UFC’s footsteps and have a sole champion reign in each boxing division.
The promoter admitted there too many belts to win, with a champion needing the WBC, WBA, IBF and WBO to be deemed undisputed.

Hearn revealed he is working on a ‘blueprint’ for each division to have just one champion, like is the case in the UFC.
He told Sky Sports: “If you look at the UFC model, which we’re all envious of.
“It’s one promotional company and one belt, and that’s what I want to get to in boxing.
“And it’s going to take a lot of work, but we’re putting the blueprint in for that.

“It’s something that we’re going to be pushing hard for in 2020 as we continue to expand.”
Hearn is currently working on a deal for unified champion Anthony Joshua, 31, to face WBC king Tyson Fury, 32, twice next year.
It would see the first ever heavyweight to hold all four major belts, and achieving the goal of one champion.

But Hearn admits the history each strap provides will make it difficult to convince a boxer to instead merge them all together.

He said: “What we do have to understand is belts do matter.
“These governing bodies are steeped in history. These fighters that other fighters look up to and they’re role models and heroes.
“They see them with the green and gold WBC belts. So we can’t forget that.”
