Mike Tyson was challenged to DEATHMATCH by UFC legend Royce Gracie but boxer refused as ‘there was no way I’d win’

UFC legend Royce Gracie challenged Mike Tyson to a ‘no-holds-barred’ fight ‘to the finish’, a new memoir has revealed. The boxing icon tore apart the heavyweight division in the late 1980s before a rape conviction, along with excessive partying and further personal life problems, rocked his career.

While Iron Mike was preparing his comeback to the ring, the MMA promotion UFC was founded and Brazilian fighter Gracie, now 54, won three fights on its first night in late 1993.
And his desire to be seen as the top fighter on Earth led to a stunning challenge for the Baddest Man on the Planet.
In a memoir by sports writer Fiaz Rafiq,’ To The Top: Enter the Octagon, the Ring and Entertainment’, it is revealed: “[Tyson] was challenged by the Gracie Brothers, in particular Royce, back in the early 1990s.
“The UFC champion’s perception was that Tyson was the best boxer in the world, but he refused to accept that Tyson was the best ‘fighter’.
“The Gracies had a point. They had been beating all-comers from various styles long before the Octagon was first engineered.
“And Royce wasn’t going to rest until he did everything within his means to provoke the heavyweight champion into accepting a real fight in a no-holds-barred setting.
“To settle the matter once and for all, Royce formally challenged the most feared boxer of our time to a fight to the finish, and so did his elder brother Rickson.”
Gracie felt that Tyson, 54, was beatable despite his huge frame and ferocity – yet the proposition was declined with Iron Mike feeling there was ‘no way he’d win’.

Rafiq wrote: “For Royce, any fight was a matter of who could implement their own strategy, and much of the Gracie style was developed to avoid even the chance of their opponent landing a lucky punch.
“What Royce lacked in brute force, he clearly made up for in technical skill, as his opponents – including a professional boxer – quickly discovered.
“‘There’s only one way to find out,’ he told me, as a smirk crept across his face followed by loud laughter. Sadly for posterity, Tyson declined.”
In fact, Gracie came back a few years later with a fresh proposal, which was dismissed by a boxing world that is now clamouring for YouTube brawlers such as Jake Paul and crossover events like Conor McGregor’s match with Floyd Mayweather.
Rafiq continued: “In Iron Mike’s case, one rejection wasn’t enough for Royce.
“In 1997 the Gracie’s challenge made the headlines again, after the publication of a one-page advert in Men’s Health in America, in which the UFC champion once again challenged the former heavyweight boxer ‘officially’. Anywhere, anytime, no rules!

“Years later I asked Royce about the famous challenge, and discovered that the heavyweight had been, at least in theory, willing to put up.
“‘I heard that my brother tried to bring him in [to the UFC],’ Royce explained. ‘He had accepted but people around him – the lawyers, managers, and the Commission – said no way, because boxing had too much to lose.
“But he had accepted and he wanted to do it. I talked to him before and he’s like, ‘I’d love to try this stuff out, man’.
“But people around him did not allow him to do it. If he lost a fight, if it happened, well, boxing was already in the decline in America so it wouldn’t be good for boxing’.”

But the WBC king has revealed he’s open to a crossover bout with Ngannou and a wrestling match with former WWE champ McIntyre.
He said on Instagram: “This is a message to Francis Ngannou and the UFC guys: Look, if you want some of this Gypsy King money, you know where to come find it.
“You want some of this Gypsy King power, I’ll give it ya.
“Any time, any place, anywhere. Seven days a week and twice on a Sunday you big ugly dosser.”
Fury, 32, then took aim at McIntyre, who recently claimed the former unified heavyweight champion has been ‘stalking’ him on social media.
He said: “This is a special message to my long-haired boyfriend Drew McIntyre, who can’t stop thinking about me and can’t stop talking about me.

“Drew, you want a good hiding (flexes his biceps)? I’ll give it you too. Any time, any place, anywhere.”
A fired-up Fury then turned his attention to Joshua, saying: “While I’m on a rant, I may as well call out one more person.
“A big useless dosser, not a real fighting man, hype job, bodybuild, CrossFit, big, ugly s***house.
“And that’s Anthony Joshua. AJ, if you’re out there let’s make this fight happen you big dosser, you big s***house, bum dosser.
“I’m going to smash your face in too, and there’s not one thing you can do about it. Prove me wrong sucker, prove me wrong.

    “I’m No1, numero uno.”
He added: “Just been thinking, another message for AJ: AJ, if you go past three rounds with me, I’ll quit in the corner.
“Because that’s how confident I am of taking you cold out in the first two, three rounds. Out, like a light switch.”
Fury and Joshua’s long-awaited Battle of Britain is on course to take place in Saudi Arabia in late July or early August.

But his co-promoter, Bob Arum, has cast serious doubt over the blockbuster fight taking place this year.
He told Ring Magazine: “If I had to bet whether the Tyson Fury versus Anthony Joshua fight would happen or not, I would say no.
“As far as I can see this whole thing with Eddie and (a Fury vs AJ fight in Saudi Arabia) is just a mirage.”
He added: “Eddie is desperate, he has one more fight with AJ, and he wants it to be the fight against Fury.
“But if a fight against Tyson is delayed, to the winter, then AJ has to fight Oleksandr Usyk, and that’s not that big a fight. Eddie is a desperado here.”

JAKE PAUL has trolled Kamaru Usman following the UFC welterweight champion’s shutting down of a fight with him.A few days after revealing his eagerness to beat ‘the s*** out of one of these internet guys’, The Nigerian Nightmare poured cold water on a showdown with the younger Paul brother.

Usman’s backtracking on the fight bamboozled Paul, who took aim at the UFC’s 170lb king with a four-point tweet.
Paul, who was cageside for Usman’s brutal knockout of Jorge Masvidal last weekend, wrote: “So let’s get this straight:
“1. Usman calls me out to fight on TMZ sports interview.
“2. I quickly accept the challenge to fight and will give him biggest pay day of career ($10m+)
“3. Usman then backs out of fight because I’m “a Disney kid”
    “4. Usman visits Disney world.”
Paul stretched his unbeaten record to 3-0 earlier this month with a first-round knockout of former UFC welterweight Ben Askren.

The 24-year-old is targeting future fights with UFC stars Nate Diaz and Conor McGregor, bouts which have been laughed off by combat sports fans.
But the YouTuber insists the fights aren’t out of his reach.
He said: “Even someone watching this interview right now is like, ‘Oh, this kid’s crazy.
“‘Nate Diaz is such a dog, he’s going to kill Jake, he’s out of his mind.’ But they’re going to tune in and watch, right?
“It’s two massive names, and it would be a massive pay-per-view, and then when they see me obliterate him, they’re jaws are going to be dropped – they’re not going to know how to react.

“They’re going to think it’s rigged again.
“And at that moment in time, I’ll be undeniable to fight Conor McGregor, because I beat the guy that beat you, Conor.
“And the Jake Paul vs. Conor fight is a massive fight.
“I’m like, why wait? I don’t need to be in this sport forever. I’m not trying to get 100 fights.
“Let’s do the biggest fights right away.”

Jake Paul to return by ‘end of the year’ with Conor McGregor’s training partner Dillon Danis among potential opponents

JAKE PAUL is in line to return to the ring by the end of the year – with Dillon Danis among the potential opponents. The internet sensation improved his record to three knockout wins in as many fights after beating Ben Askren in one round.
Jake Paul is set to return by the end of the yearCredit: Instagram
Dillon Danis is among the potential names to fight Jake Paul
It came only four months after he left ex-NBA star Nate Robinson out cold and sent into a viral meme.
Having become one of boxing’s most polarising characters and the face of Triller boxing, Paul is set for a rest and recovery job before fighting again.
Triller’s Ryan Kavanaugh told SunSport: “I would probably think it will be towards the end of the year.
“He wants to take a five or six month break.”
Already Paul has a long list of rivals calling him out, including ex-UFC champions Tyron Woodley, 39, and Daniel Cormier, 42.
Love Island star and Tyson Fury’s half brother Tommy, 21, has also entered talks with the YouTuber.
But 2-0 Bellator welterweight Danis, who shot to fame as Conor McGregor’s training partner, is another who fits the bill in the eyes of Triller.
Kavanaugh said: “Look, I’d love to see Jake fight, like a Dillon Danis. Personally, I think that’s a great fight.
CASINO SIGN UP OFFER: CLAIM UP TO £800 IN CASINO BONUS CASH

“Now Jake’s proven, at least minimum, that he’s a boxer. He might not have beaten the best boxer, but he knows how to box.
“We’ve got to put a real athlete in there that has real fighting and boxing skills. But there’s a lot of people, who would be suited.
“I think Dillon Danis is the type of fighter who fits the mould.”
Paul, 24, has long long feuded Danis, 27, online and even lobbed toilet paper at the jiujitsu champion in December.
It led to the grappler being offered a fight in March, but he was unable to accept amid a knee surgery.
Danis is now training again and revealed he was approached by Triller to co-headline one of their pay-per-view bills.

Kavanaugh confirmed the talks, giving him the green-light to face Paul, but only if given permission by Bellator.
“We don’t talk to any fighters that would interfere,” Kavanaugh said.
“So as long as he is clear from all of his Bellator obligations, we would definitely love to have him on a card.
“And I’d say we definitely have had the discussion that we are interested if he has no other obligations.
“The thing Jake does, he delivers to any boxer a very, very big social following.
“They come in with one and they leave with something much bigger.
“I think with someone like Dillon, that type of mould helps deliver equal value.”

Although the trend of social media stars getting into the ring has become somewhat lucrative, White is refusing to follow the crowd.
When asked if he’d contemplate getting into the Paul business, he told the media at the UFC 261 post-fight press conference: “He ain’t fighting in the UFC.
“You’re getting me talking about this f*****g guy again.”
Paul, 24, is 3-0 as a professional boxer following TKO victories over AnEson Gib, Nate Robinson and former UFC welterweight Ben Askren.
But the level of competition the former Disney star has faced has yet to impress veteran promoter White.
The 51-year-old said: “He’s getting handpicked opponents and God knows what else is going with that whole f*****g this.

“It’s just not what I do. What I do is what happened tonight. What happened tonight is we sold this place out and it was packed.”
Paul’s first-round demolition of Askren reportedly drew in a whopping 1.5million pay-per-view buys.
White is sceptical about Triller’s claim, saying: “The numbers that you’re hearing that they did are full of s**t.

“They’re full of s**t. They didn’t pull those kind of numbers. Not even f*****g close.
“Tonight, what happened here tonight, is what I do. The best versus the best.
“There is a market for that, people want to see that stuff and that kid going to make a couple of bucks and good for him. But that’s not what I do.”
After getting wind of White’s comments, Paul launched a blistering attack of his own.
He tweeted: “Dana you say you make the fights fans want to see…so hurry up and make [Jon] Jones vs. [Francis] N’gannou.
“Pay them their fair share….$10M purse for each guy, plus PPV. Why are UFC fighters so underpaid vs. Boxers?

Usman, 33, revealed he’s interested in facing the social media star in an interview with TMZ.
After getting wind of the UFC star’s comments, Paul said: “Challenge accepted.
“@USMAN84kg if your boss Dana gives you permission to box me and make more money than you ever have, let me know and we can lace them up.
“I promise it will be your biggest pay day.”
But how do the pair stack up against one another?
Well, with both men seemingly keen on sharing the ring with one another, SunSport has taken the liberty to break down the pair’s respective records.

    Age
Father Time is on Paul’s side as he is 24 years old, while the dominant Usman is 33.
Usman, however, is still very much at the peak of his powers and has shown no sign of slowing down any time soon.
Usman will celebrate his 34th birthday on May 11.

    Experience
Paul has significantly more professional boxing experience to his name than Usman having had three sanctioned fights to the UFC star’s zero.
But when it comes to overall combat sports experience, Usman’s dwarves Paul’s.
Usman, Africa’s first UFC champion, has had 20 professional mixed martial arts fights during his nine-year career.

    Physical
The brash Paul, who made waves last weekend at UFC 261, is an inch taller than Usman at 6’1.
But the pair both have the same reach, with their arms extending 76 inches.
Somewhat surprisingly, Usman walks around one pound lighter than Paul, who tipped the scales at 191lbs (13ST 6lbs) for his showdown with Ben Askren earlier this month.
But the Nigerian-American’s muscle-bound physique blows Paul’s out of the water.

    Form
Paul is currently on a three-fight win streak having won all of his outings via TKO.
Usman, meanwhile, has won his last 18 fights in a row – with 14 of those wins coming inside the UFC octagon.
And the former Sanford MMA standout has won three of his last four fights by way of KO or TKO.

A three-fight skid – including a loss to VanZant – prompted the UFC brass to give the 30-year-old her marching orders.
Bellator were expected to pick up the Hawaiian but have seemingly been beaten to the punch by BKFC.
Ostovich, who ended her UFC career with a 1-3 record, is expected to make her BKFC debut in July.
And according to MMA Fighting, a rematch with VanZant is currently in the works.

VanZant came out of the 125lb clash victorious, submitting Ostovich with a second-round armbar.
Ostovich returned the octagon 22 months later – a hiatus which was in part down to an eight-month USADA suspension – to lock horns with Gina Mazany.
But she suffered a third-round TKO loss to The Ultimate Fighter season 18 star.
Before the fight, Ostovich seemingly predicted her days on the UFC roster would soon come to an end.
She said: “This could be my last fight – I’m looking at it in those terms. I’m feeling really good.
“No gyms are open in Hawaii and even without Covid, living on an island made things harder.
“I don’t even know how that whole (doping) situation even happened.

Paul, 24, went on to claim that he pocketed a whopping £54million from pay-per-views buys alone.
He now wants the UFC welterweight champion to have a slice of the pie if Dana White allows him.
Taking to Twitter, Paul wrote: “Challenge accepted.
“Usman if your boss Dana gives you permission to box me and make more money than you ever have, let me know and we can lace them up.
“I promise it will be your biggest pay day.”
Usman didn’t beat around the bush when quizzed on his thoughts of Paul as a boxer.
Reported by TMZ, he responded how he’d ‘beat the s***’ out of Paul while addressing a potential match-up with Conor McGregor.
He said: “He’s (McGregor) fought once in the last year and a half and that didn’t end well for him.
“Imagine what I would do to him. I would take his life in there.
“If these guys don’t show me anything, maybe I’ll put out one of these guys who think ‘I can box’ and beat the s*** out of them.”
Paul has called out every big name in combat sports including Floyd Mayweather, McGregor and Daniel Cormier.
But it appears unlikely UFC chief White will give Usman, who demolished Jorge Masvidal on Sunday, the green light to switch to boxing.
White has made it no secret of his dislike for Paul’s moving into boxing, labelling it a ‘f****** circus.’

    “That’s a freakshow.”
Paul is preparing for a potential bout with Tommy Fury after confirming talks are underway.
