Chelsea legend Ashley Cole compares Jack Grealish to Eden Hazard and backs him to make England Euro 2020 squad

ASHLEY COLE has backed Jack Grealish to be part of England’s Euro 2020 squad and compared him to Eden Hazard.
The Aston Villa star, 25, made his international debut in September before following it up with appearances in the victories over Wales and Ireland.

Last night he was handed a first competitive start in the Nations League clash against Belgium.
And even though the Three Lions lost 2-0, Grealish was widely-praised for his performance.
England legend Cole was watching on from the Sky Sports studio and saw enough to convince him that Grealish will have a role to play at the European Championship next summer.
He said: “Grealish was pulling the strings and running the show.

“When you talk about little magicians who can win you games. He’s one of them.
“Grealish should go to the Euros if he keeps producing the quality he’s currently producing.
“He’s got that (Eden) Hazard quality, he can beat players left and right, can get fouls for Mason (Mount) and Harry (Kane) to take free-kicks. He will win England points.”
Belgium star Hazard, who was ruled out yesterday due to injury, earned legendary status at Chelsea before joining Real Madrid in 2019.

The 29-year-old playmaker scored 110 goals in 352 for the Blues and won two Premier League titles and plus Europa League trophies during his time at Stamford Bridge.
Grealish has enjoyed an impressive start to the campaign since helping Villa beat the drop last term, scoring five and producing six assists so far.
He will be hoping to win his fifth England cap on Wednesday when Iceland travel to Wembley.

Belgium vs England LIVE REACTION: Three Lions FAIL to qualify for Nations League finals after defeat

ENGLAND will NOT be at the Nations League finals next summer after losing 2-0 to Belgium.
Though Jack Grealish’s starring performance tonight was a glimmer of hope for boss Gareth Southgate.

Follow ALL of the latest reaction below…

    THAT’S ALL FOR TONIGHT
England fell short when they needed to pull out a win to keep their Nations League hopes alive.
As for Belgium, they’re one point from booking their place in next summers finals.
A win or a draw against Denmark should do the job, but if they lose, Denmark take top spot.
England face Iceland next week in what is now a pointless fixture.
    Goodnight!

    LIONS OUT
Unlucky England were KO’d from the Nations League as group leaders Belgium hit a dodgy double to clinch victory inside the first 23 minutes.

    SOUTHGATE SPEAKS
England boss Gareth Southgate spoke to Sky after the game: “The scoreline does feel harsh. We don’t like losing football matches but I’ve got to give enormous credit to the players.
“Right the way through the game we created problems with the ball and defended resiliently. I feel we were excellent.
“We had a different profile of players in attack – we lost a lot of speed up front without Raheem and Marcus – but I can’t fault the attacking play.
“I thought Jack had an absolutely outstanding game. We created far more opportunities than we did against Belgium at Wembley.
“I saw somebody with the bravery to play [Grealish], which I knew I would.
“He took the ball in tight areas, his technique was good, he took players out of the game; and we knew he would buy a lot of free-kicks.
“I just thought he was outstanding. He should be absolutely delighted with the way he played.
“I thought Bukayo also showed a lot of maturity and quality on the ball. Although we are out of the competition, there were a lot of plusses for us today.”

    TWITTER REACTS
It’s safe to say, Jack Grealish was England’s best player tonight.

    KANE SPEAKS
England captain Harry Kane spoke to Sky after tonight’s disappointing loss: “I think we were dominant today and were unlucky to concede the two goals.
“The first was a deflection and I don’t think the second was a foul. From there we dominated but we couldn’t find the end product.
“If we play like this going forward we’ll win the majority of our games.
“Mase and Jack are really good on the ball, turning defenders and playing one-twos on the edge of the box.
“I really like playing with Jack – you can see his quality on the ball, one against one, and he’s always looking for a forward pass which is great for a striker.”

    TABLE CHECK
England are looking miserable in third.
Denmark’s late winner against Iceland puts them three points ahead of England and within two of Belgium.
It all goes down to the clash between Belgium and Denmark next week to see who will be progressing to the Nations League finals.

    FULL-TIME STATS
England managed to hold on to the majority of possession in the second half, but much like the first half they didn’t really use it.
Belgium were happy to sit back, invite pressure and then hit England on the counter attack – conceding the two early goals allowed them to do that.

England continued to use Jack Grealish as their main outlet, they based 42.7 per cent of their attacks down the left-hand side.
England had 16 attempts but only managed to register three of those on target. Woeful.

    FT: BELGIUM 2-0 ENGLAND
Belgium manage to hold firm securing all three points, they have their revenge for last months defeat at Wembley.
England pushed for goals in the second half but ultimately came up short when it mattered.
Jack Grealish is the only positive from tonight’s game, he was the one player who looked dangerous in the final third and he’s proved he can be of use to Southgate.
Southgate does need to address some issues within the team, they’re looking rather flat a times.
Belgium will have to wait a little longer to confirm their place in next summer’s Nations League finals.
Iceland did equalise late on, but Eriksen restored Denmark’s lead minutes later scoring from the penalty spot.

    PEEEEEEP!

    BELGIUM 2-0 ENGLAND
    83. England haven’t really looked like scoring, it’s been a poor attacking display from Southgate’s men.

    BELGIUM 2-0 ENGLAND
    80. Rice plays the ball into Sancho on the right-hand side, the winger holds play up allowing Walker to overlap.
Sancho passes the ball to Walker, the right-back drives to the by-line and hangs a cross up in the air, but Courtois being the man-mountain he is comfortably catches the ball.

    BELGIUM 2-0 ENGLAND
    79. Mings manages to break up a dangerous Belgium attack and play it to his Aston Villa team-mate Jack Grealish.
Grealish senses Meunier breathing down his neck and he delicately flicks the ball over his shoulder sending the right-back for a hotdog.

    BELGIUM 2-0 ENGLAND
    77. Rice intercepts Witsel’s pass into Tielemans and plays the ball into the feet of Kane.

    BELGIUM 2-0 ENGLAND

Chelsea suffer injury blow as Ben Chilwell limps off in the first-half against Belgium with back injury

CHELSEA have been dealt an injury blow after Ben Chilwell limped off in England’s loss to Belgium.
Chilwell was replaced by Bukayo Saka after 38 minutes of the Nations League clash with a suspected back injury.

Ben Chilwell was forced off against Belgium with a suspected back injury

The former Leicester full-back missed the start of Chelsea’s season with a foot injury but has been a mainstay in Frank Lampard’s first XI since his return to fitness.
Injury and self-isolation kept him out of England’s previous Nations League fixtures.
The match against Belgium was Chilwell’s first cap in almost a year.
The news will leave Frank Lampard sweating after Chilwell made an extremely promising start to his Blues career.

He has played a key part in a Chelsea backline which conceded just one goal in six games before the international break.
The 23-year-old is now a doubt for Chelsea’s trip to Newcastle next Saturday.
Chilwell was on the pitch for both of Belgium’s goals against Gareth Southgate’s side, as England fell two goals behind within the first 30 minutes.

Chilwell’s former Leicester team-mate Youri Tielemans gave Roberto Martinez’s side a 10th minute lead with a deflected effort from outside the box.

Dries Mertens then doubled Belgium’s advantage from a free-kick.
The result means England are now unable to qualify for next year’s Nations League finals.

Kasper Schmiechel left needing medical attention and subbed off after nasty collision sees him kneed in the head

KASPER SCHMEICHEL needed medical attention after a nasty collision in Denmark’s Nations League win over Iceland.
The Leicester City goalkeeper appeared to be briefly knocked out after he was accidentally kneed in the head by Albert Gudmundsson.

Kasper Schmeichel appeared to be briefly knocked out after a collision with Iceland’s Albert Gudmundsson

Schmeichel was subbed off at half-time so he could receive medical attention

Schmeichel was able to walk off the pitch after receiving medical attention, but appeared to be in some discomfort.
He was subbed off at the break to be taken for a complete medical assessment.
Gudmundsson was unable to slow down sufficiently to avoid Schmeichel as the Foxes keeper came rushing off his line to catch the ball on the stroke of half-time.
The impact knocked Schmeichel’s head back awkwardly, leading to concerns he may have also injured his neck.

Leicester fans will be anxiously awaiting news on the extent of Schmeichel’s injury.
The 34-year-old has played in all eight of the Foxes’ Premier League matches so far this season.
Denmark won 2-1 thanks to a injury time penalty from former Tottenham midfielder Christian Eriksen.
Eriksen opened the scoring from the spot 12 minutes into the match.

But Denmark’s Nations League finals hopes looked to have been dashed five minutes from time when Viðar Örn Kjartansson equalised for the visitors.

However, Eriksen stepped up again to convert from 12 yards and help Kasper Hjulmand’s to all three points.
The result puts the Danes second in League A Group 2, three points clear of England, who lost to Belgium on Sunday.
Denmark now travel to Belgium on Wednesday, knowing they need a win to qualify for next year’s Nations League finals.

Belgium 2 England 0: Three Lions KO’d from Nations League as Tielemans and Mertens strike despite Grealish shining again

NO express pace up front, no sorcery in central  midfield, no composure in defence.
In one of their last serious tests before next summer’s Euros, there was little to  suggest that England can be genuine contenders to win the thing.

Skipper Harry Kane and his England team-mates were down on their luck as they battled well in Belgium but lacked quality at both endsCredit: Rex Features

You might call it a reality check, but in reality, Gareth Southgate’s men have been uninspiring in four of their five competitive matches this autumn.
Their chances of reaching the Nations League finals were ended by two early goals from Youri Tielemans and Dries Mertens.
And even though England created chances against Fifa’s world No 1 team, Belgium had superior quality at either end of the pitch.
Southgate can point to injuries and suspensions to key players — Raheem Sterling, Marcus Rashford, Harry Maguire, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Joe Gomez might all have made his starting line-up.

But his devotion to playing with three central defenders and wing-backs leaves the Three Lions without a creative force behind skipper Harry Kane.
So to decide against starting with the pace of Jadon Sancho, who had scored against the Republic of Ireland on Thursday, always felt like a conservative move — and there have been too many of them from Southgate.
At least the England boss has lost his blind spot over Aston Villa’s Jack Grealish, who was excellent on his first competitive England start and will take some shifting from this team.
But it still wasn’t enough to unlock an experienced Belgian defence.England aren’t bad at all but neither are they world-beaters.

Boss Gareth Southgate sees England struggle to turn possession into goals, with Belgium chief Roberto Martinez watching onCredit: Reuters
You sense that, in his heart of hearts, Southgate doesn’t quite believe they are ready to win a tournament, hence those overly-cautious starting line-ups.
Sterling had failed a late fitness test after suffering a knock in training, so Southgate elected to start both Grealish and Mason Mount to support Kane in attack.
England’s victory over the Belgians at Wembley last month had been notable, yet they had been thoroughly outplayed for the opening half-hour.
But a subsequent home defeat by Denmark left Southgate’s men knowing they would probably need a victory in Leuven to reach the finals — and that was never really on the cards.
Belgium are unbeaten in competitive home matches for more than a decade and you could see why, even though England had more shots on goal.
Within two minutes, Kane went on a driving run at the heart of the home defence and drilled one just wide.
But England were behind inside ten minutes.
Eric Dier’s pass put Mount under pressure, Jan Vertonghen nicked possession and Romelu Lukaku, surrounded by five England players, managed to tee up Tielemans.

Dries Mertens enjoys making it 2-0 to Belgium with a free-kick on 23 minutesCredit: Getty Images – Getty

Leicester midfielder Youri Tielemans fires Belgium in front with a deflected effortCredit: AFP or licensors
The Leicester midfielder leathered his shot, which deflected off Tyrone Mings, with Jordan Pickford only able to turn it on to the inside of the post and into the net.
Dier is respected as a player and a bloke but at elite level, he gives away too many goals.
England were straight back at  Roberto Martinez’s side, though,  Kieran Trippier whipping in a cross and Grealish nipping in at the near-post only for his effort to be deflected wide by Toby Alderweireld.
From Trippier’s corner, Kane beat Thibaut Courtois with a stooping header, only for an alert Lukaku to dart back and nod off the line.
But midway through the first half, Belgium were two up — Declan Rice penalised for catching Kevin De Bruyne after he had nicked the ball.
Mertens, playing in his hometown stadium, bent in a superb free-kick with Pickford clutching at air. Ben Chilwell was forced off through injury before half-time and replaced by Bukayo Saka, leaving Southgate without four defenders who might be considered first-choice.
    BOBBED AND WEAVED
If there was to be a change at half-time you would have expected Sancho to arrive and give England an injection of pace.
Instead it was Harry Winks, not currently playing for Tottenham in the Premier League, who replaced Jordan Henderson.
Still, England had a couple of early sighters in the second half.
Grealish got away with a foul on Axel Witsel, before Alderweireld brought down Spurs team-mate Kane on the edge of the area but Mount was wayward with his free-kick.
Then Grealish, on a darting run, was tripped by Thomas Meunier only for Trippier to plough his free-kick into the wall.
Mount soon released Kane but the skipper — who had just taken a heavy whack from Jason Denayer — shot meekly at Courtois.

Grealish, increasingly influential, bobbed, weaved and shot just over.
Pickford made a fine save to deny Lukaku and with England stretched it was the hosts who looked the more likely late scorers.
This has been a grim old autumn for Southgate — and even though off-field controversies have often overshadowed the actual football, there is little doubt they have gone backwards.

Wijnaldum scores twice in 15 mins as his Dutch scoring hot-streak continues in win over Bosnia

DUTCH master-blaster Georginio Wijnaldum kept up his amazing streak of international goals as an early double sunk Bosnia-Herzegovina.
The Liverpool midfielder now has seven of Holland’s last 13 goals – and 12 in his last 19 internationals.

The 30-year-old Dutch skipper was unmarked to slot his opener before nudging home a second on 15 minutes, via Steven Berghuis’ header.
Lyon attacker Memphis Depay then showed why he is being linked with Barcelona, Juventus and Roma by tapping Holland 3-0 up on 55 minutes.
Smail Prevljak soon netted Bosnia’s consolation in their 3-1 Nations League loss.
But Holland ending a five-game winless run never looked in doubt as they dictated most of the game.

And Wijnaldum was again their star turn.

So perhaps his staggering form was why he declined to rule out a move when questioned about Barca back in September.
In the final year of his Anfield contract, the former Feyenoord, PSV and Newcastle star said: “They are only rumours. I can’t say anything at the moment.”
Not surprisingly, though, he has a good relationship with fellow Dutchman and Nou Camp chief Ronald Koeman, notably from the latter’s two years as Holland manager.

Raheem Sterling faces late fitness test for England ahead of Belgium clash with Jack Grealish waiting in the wings

Jack Grealish impressed against Ireland and could step inCredit: AP:Associated Press

Jack Grealish is ready to step in if Sterling is ruled out with injury in Sunday’s Nations League clash.
The Aston Villa ace impressed in England’s 3-0 win over Ireland on Thursday and could get a chance to catch the eye in a competitive clash.
But Gareth Southgate faces a defensive headache with both Harry Maguire and Joe Gomez out of Sunday’s clash.
Manchester United centre-back Maguire is suspended while Gomez suffered a serious knee injury in training last week.

Harry Kane is set to make his 50th appearance for England after sitting out the friendly win on Thursday.
Southgate said it was a “privilege” to have Kane in the team in the build-up to Sunday’s showdown with Belgium.
The England boss said: “Every country is going to play differently and have their outstanding players who have different sorts of attributes.

“Harry is a different type of centre-forward to Romelu Lukaku, for example.

“Different to Olivier Giroud or Kylian Mbappe. We are just delighted we’ve got him and we know his impact. His scoring record for us is just phenomenal. Absolutely phenomenal.
“You always know, going into a game with the likes of Harry, with Raheem as well, that we’ve got a tremendous goal threat which a lot of countries would be delighted to have.”
