AT LEAST there is one positive to be taken from this shambles. At least the World Cup is not about to start.Until Fifa came to their senses and moved the Qatar tournament to later this year – the weather in Doha was 40C yesterday – the opening match would have been in a few days’ time.

Gareth Southgate has got away with one, big time.
None of it is his fault, really. But the England squad, as they proved with this horrific performance, would have been completely unprepared for a major tournament.
Deservedly so, Southgate’s team were beaten by the 40th best team in the world.
The first World Cup match against Iran is on November 21. Perform like this and they will be back home before we even get into December.

And there are so many players suffering niggles that a World Cup now would have come at a bad time.
Harry Maguire, such a key defender for Southgate, is on the road to rediscovering his form after a nightmare season for Manchester United. As he proved here, there is still work to do.
Playing in a three-man defence, he was alongside Conor Coady who might be a brilliant cheerleader for Southgate behind the scenes, at this level, is not good enough.

And then there is this massive issue on the left of defence. Leicester’s James Justin, naturally a right back despite often playing on the left, was brought into the squad because of injuries to both Luke Shaw and Ben Chilwell.
You had to have some sympathy for Justin who suffered a truly terrible debut and unsurprisingly, was put out of his misery at half-time and replaced by Bukayo Saka.
As for the other debutant along with Justin, Jarrod Bowen did well in flashes but did not really do enough and Harry Kane did not have any service.
Jude Bellingham was handed a full 90 minutes in central midfield but on his 13th appearance, the 18-year-old tried a bit too hard.
The winning penalty was a bit dodgy and Zsolt Nagy made the most of contact from substitute Reece James.

England travel to Budapest for their Nations League opening game against a familiar foe with these two sides having met in World Cup qualifying in the last 12 months.

The game was marred by reports of racism towards England’s players which led initially to the game being planned to be played behind closed doors, although it is now reported that around 30,000 fans will be in attendance.
Phil Foden will miss the games with Hungary and Germany after testing positive for Covid-19, the Man City midfielder has been sent home but boss Southgate says he should be available got the games against Italy and Hungary at Molineux.
Defenders Fikayo Tomori and Marc Guehi are injured and will miss out, while Raheem Sterling has missed some training sessions but should be fit.
England’s only real injury worry was the withdrawal of Arsenal centre-back Ben White as he struggles to shake off a muscular injury.

IRELAND suffered a disastrous start to their Nations League campaign as they went down to a shock defeat in Yerevan.The visitors bossed the first half but failed to make their dominance count and were rocked back for the opening quarter-hour after the break.

Eduard Spertsyan’s goal condemned Ireland to another winless day in the UEFA Nations League
They regained something of a foothold in the game but were stunned in the 74th minute when Eduard Spertsyan beat Caoimhín Kelleher.
It was the latest in a growing list of long-range goals conceded by Stephen Kenny’s Ireland team as a familiar frailty came back to haunt them.
They huffed and puffed in search of an equaliser but lacked the necessary guile to unlock the Armenian defence.
And it leaves Kenny’s stated ambition to win their Nations League group looking like a long shot with tougher tests to come, starting against Ukraine on Wednesday.
There were two competitive debutants in his starting XI.
With Gavin Bazunu not fully recovered from a back injury, Kelleher started between the posts with Nathan Collins on the right side of a three-man defence with Séamus Coleman moving to wing-back in the absence of Matt Doherty.
It was not long before Kelleher was pressed into action but he did well to deal with Tigran Bargeshyan’s snap shot in the sixth minute.

Ireland had the lion’s share of possession and chances in the opening period but failed to really test keeper David Yurchenko.
Callum Robinson fired wide after he had been played in by the impressive Chiedozie Ogbene.
And, after a move which also featured Josh Cullen, Collins and Jeff Hendrick, the Rotherham United player pulled the ball back to his fellow forward.
His first-time shot was going in before Hovhannes Hambartsumyan did well to clear.

Ogbene then pulled a Hendrick ball out of the air with a sublime touch but the Armenian defence reacted well and cleared the danger.
When Yurchenko could only punch Parrott’s cross, Séamus Coleman seized on the loose ball and his shot hit Spertsyan’s arm but Ireland’s appeals were waved away.
Hendrick then picked out Robinson with a fine through ball but he ran out of road as Yurchenko narrowed the angle and, so, he pulled it back to Ogbene but he fired wide.
BIG CHANCE
Whatever about that chance, Ogbene will feel he should have done better on the stroke of half-time.
Cullen swung in the free-kick and, as the Armenian defenders ganged up on Duffy, Ogbene was left free but his header was off-target.
Kenny will have been reasonably happy with the first-half display but annoyed they had not made their dominance count and the home side carried much more of a threat after the break.
Enda Stevens loss the ball high up the pitch, allowing Barseghyan to break. He picked out Hovhannes Humbartsayan on the right who returned the pass.

The Slovan Bratislava player shifted the ball from one foot to another and fired past Kelleher but, although the assistant referee failed to flag at the time, Humbarsayan was correctly ruled offside and so the goal was chalked off.

Ireland survived that period and had chances of their own, albeit from set-pieces.
And disaster struck in the 74th minute.
Armenia were still complaining about a challenge from John Egan on the edge of his box when Cullen tried to clear his lines with a pass to substitute Michael Obafemi.

RALF RANGNICK got his Austria reign off to a dream start with a 3-0 win over Croatia on Friday – winning applause from Manchester United fans in the process.The former boss confirmed he will not have any role at Old Trafford next season at the end of last month.

BELGIUM returned to the international stage with high expectations – but it didn’t quite go as planned.A double from Memphis Depay, a decent effort from Denzel Dumfries and a terrific strike by Steven Bergwijn was enough for the Red Devil’s to be embarrassed in Brussels.
Michy Batschuayi was able to grab a late goal for Belgium, but the game was well and truly wrapped up by then.

He scored two really well taken goals tonight, with the second being the pick of the two.
The front man was delicacy personified as he controlled the ball in the box before smashing a volley past Simon Mignolet in the Belgian net.
Van Gaal has still got it
Despite facing a battle with prostate cancer, Netherlands manager has proved he is still at the top of the game tonight.
His tactics were almost inch perfect, and Netherlands should have really kept a clean sheet in this one.
He made some bold decisions in leaving out the likes of Matthias De Ligt, but it paid off in his favour.
Huge, huge credit should go to the Dutch manager.

It is a bad time to be a supporter of the Red Devils it seems, and not only if you are a Manchester United fan…
Belgium seemed to really struggle tonight, despite a bright start from Eden Hazard and Romelu Lukaku.
Once big Rom came off, they seemed to lose track of the game, and the goals started to flood in for the Netherlands.
Boyata started brightly but became really, really poor as the game dragged on, and Belgium were not good enough all over the pitch.

But not this time around, as the Belgian national team suffered a humiliating 4-1 loss to rivals Netherlands in their first Nations League match in Brussels.
Holland opened the scoring on 40 minutes through Tottenham ace Steven Bergwijn, whose impressive performance will give Antonio Conte much to think about.
Memphis Depay doubled the visitors’ lead just six minutes into second half and Denzel Dumfries put it to bed after 61 minutes.
But there was more misery for Belgium as Depay netted a fourth just four minutes later before Michy Batshuayi eased the blow during stoppage time.
