Scotland 2 Armenia 0 – Anthony Ralston & Scott McKenna’s first goals for county lift gloom in ideal Nations League start

THERE may not have been any trains running to get supporters home. But at Hampden last night Scotland got back on track.
Scotland’s Anthony Ralston celebrates scoring their side’s first goal
A week on from the World Cup campaign hitting the buffers and being derailed, it was all aboard the Nations League.
    And never mind ScotRail.
It was Scott-Ral who were just the ticket for the Tartan Army.
Steaming in at the back post like two locomotives.
    Arriving bang on time.
Tony Ralston and Scott McKenna were just the ticket in this 2-0 victory over Armenia.
And this much-needed win gave Steve Clarke a platform to build on now ahead of games against the Republic of Ireland on Saturday and Armenia again next week.
This was the comfortable night he needed on his third anniversary as Scotland boss.

After last week’s dismal display against Ukraine, his players simply had to perform.
Anything less than a victory here and his critics would have been lining to annihilate him.
But it was clear from early on that Scotland would be winning all three points.
Let’s get it right, Armenia are a poor, poor side.
It beggars believe how on earth they managed to beat the Republic of Ireland last weekend.
Yet Scotland still had to turn up. They still had to find ways through a team that had ten men behind the ball virtually at all times.
Scotland’s Scott McKenna celebrates his goal
That’s often been the downfall of our national teams in years gone by.
Scotland tend to struggle to break weaker teams down when they’re so defensive.
Yet the way Clarke’s side handled this game was worthy of real credit.
There was no-one in dark blue feeling sorry for themselves after last week’s World Cup misery.
Of the ones who started against Ukraine – like John McGinn, Callum McGregor and skipper Andy Robertson – there was a real intend.

While fresh legs like Stuart Armstrong, John Souttar and scorers McKenna and Ralston brought added energy.
Chances are there will be more changes to the line-up for this weekend’s clash with the Irish in Dublin.
But this team did everything asked of them here.
Scotland could have been two or three goals to the good inside the first 15 minutes.
Stand-out performer Armstrong struck the post with an early shot before Robertson had a drilled shot saved. Next Jack Henry and McGinn came close to hitting the net.
There was a lull after that.
Stuart Armstrong rattled a post early on
Armenia had so many bodies back defending that Scotland had to keep the ball moving quickly to carve them open.
But there was always the right balance between patience and urgency.
It just felt inevitable that the team would take the lead.
What was maybe surprising, right enough, was where the opening goal came from.
Big Ralston had had a sensational, fairytale season for Celtic and did score a handful of important goals.
But even he wouldn’t have been expecting to mark his first Scotland start a goal. Yet didn’t he just.
With 28 minutes on the clock he timed his run perfectly to get on the end if a superb cross from Armstrong.
Planting his header down into the ground, and back across the goalkeeper, it was 1-0 Scotland.
❌ “He’s a lucky boy to be on the pitch.”The frustration was evident for the Armenian players as a bottle seemingly gets thrown in the direction of the linesmen! 🤯 pic.twitter.com/9rfTjXJeXa— Premier Sports (@PremierSportsTV) June 8, 2022

    Everyone could settle after that.
The way Armenia were set up, there was virtually no chance of them getting back in the game.
If there were any fans still concerned, Scotland’s second goal certainly made sure of the victory.
It came after 40 minutes with another unlikely scorer.
Towering McKenna just wasn’t going to be stopped from powering a McGinn corner into the net.
It was his ball from the moment it left the Aston Villa midfielder’s boot and there wasn’t an Armenia player capable of getting in his way.
It was dreamland stuff for the Nottingham Forest centre-back who went into this game on the back of his promotion to the Premier League.
It could have been even better too.
McKenna had the ball in the back of the Armenia net deep into stoppage time at the end of the first-half.
Only this time when the VAR took a look at it the goal was disallowed for off-side.
The second half was a foregone conclusion in many respects.
The game was won and the points in the bag.
The only question was whether Scotland would add to their goals tally.
Che Adams had certainly enough sights of goal to get on the scoresheet.
But this was a night when his best efforts came to nothing.
The Southampton striker got himself into some great position and put a shift in for the team.
But his finishing wasn’t sharp enough when opportunities came.
The closest Scotland came to adding a third goal came in the final ten minutes.
McGinn looked desperate to score and he unleashed a thunderbolt of a shot which was heading for the roof of the net before the Armenian keeper got his fingernails to it.
The Scotland fans’ favourite had another go in the dying moments but curled an effort which was just too high.
McGinn just wasn’t going to get his goal despite his desire.
In the end, though, the 2-0 victory was more than enough to send the supporters home happy. Albeit not on the train.

Those two strikes saw him become the first male player in history to score 100 non-penalty goals for their country.
Ronaldo, 37, was already the all-time leading international goalscorer after overtaking former record holder Ali Daei of Iran, who scored 109 goals.
Overwhelmed with emotion, Ronaldo’s mum, Maria Dolores dos Santos Aveiro, broke down in tears and celebrated proudly after his second goal of the game.
His first goal was a tap-in after some good work from Diogo Jota.

The camera quickly panned to Dolores who raised her arms in the air, hugged the person next to her and appeared to have a tear in her eye.
Ronaldo then put Portugal 3-0 up just moments later and his mum was seen wiping her eyes with a tissue.
Perhaps the crying suggests that Ronaldo does not have long left on the international stage with the World Cup in Qatar expected to be his last.
He has been scoring for Portugal since the opening match of Euro 2004 against Greece.

However, the Portugal boss could be tempted to rest Pepe, 39, having featured in two consecutive matches.
And Santos has the option to reintroduce Manchester City ace Bernardo Silva or AC Milan talisman Rafael Leao.
Meanwhile, Jaroslav Silhavy might have to cope without left-back Jaroslav Zeleny and his replacement Jakub Jankto having lost both of them to injuries.
But the Czech Republic gaffer is expecting Milan Havel on the other flank to be available again.

‘He can get better’ – Gareth Southgate tells Jack Grealish to be ‘more tactically aware’ to get more England game time

JACK GREALISH has been challenged to “get better” and be “more tactically aware” in order to earn a starting place for England by boss Gareth Southgate. The £100million Manchester City star made another impressive impact off the bench last night as the Three Lions secured a 1-1 Nations League draw in Germany.
Gareth Southgate has revealed what Jack Grealish needs to do in order to earn a regular England startCredit: Getty
Southgate’s men went behind and looked to be heading for a second-consecutive defeat until Grealish’s introduction with 20 minutes remaining.
The former Aston Villa man instantly began to influence the clash down the left and played a key role in England earning an equaliser courtesy of Harry Kane’s 50th international goal from the penalty spot late on.
Grealish has only featured from the start in three of his last 11 caps in competitive matches for England with the manager seemingly preferring to use him as an impact sub.
The England boss has even been coming under pressure to use Grealish more, with Match of the Day host Gary Lineker tweeting last night: “The introduction of @JackGrealish has made a difference. You have to take chances to make things happen at this level.”

Southgate is adamant that he has full belief that he can be just as valuable from the off as he is coming off the bench.
However, he did admit that he thinks Grealish can improve tactically.
Southgate said: “He can do both. If we didn’t trust him we wouldn’t put him on the pitch with 20 minutes to go in the belief he can make a difference.
“At the start of the game the challenge for the wide players was to attack, defend and to try and score goals – high tactical level and you’ve got to be spot on – and that’s an area Jack can get better at.

England verdict: Jude Bellingham has all the tools to become a Three Lions and could be THE story of 2022 World Cup

THERE were groans from the stands when Jude Bellingham trotted onto the Allianz Arena pitch in an early England reshuffle. The supporters down here in Bavaria may not know too much about Kalvin Phillips but it is a very different story about Bellingham.

So it was absolutely no surprise that with Phillips struggling in the 14th minute, Jude Bellingham was handed his 14th cap for the senior team.
On a night when England scraped a draw thanks to Harry Kane’s penalty, the Germans will not have looked at our squad with too much envy although Bellingham will have been one of the obvious exceptions.
Bellingham, as they say on social media, is a proper baller.
Having played 90 times for Dortmund in his first two seasons at the club, he would have absolutely relished the chance to impress on enemy soil.

moment England star THROWS UP on pitch during Germany draw
Just six weeks earlier, he was on the wrong end of a 3-1 defeat.
Ultimately, it was a decent enough performance from Bellingham albeit a bit rough around the edges.
If Phillips’ injury rules him out of the next two games against Italy and Hungary at Wolverhampton, then Bellingham will have a serious chance to properly stake his claim for a starting place at the World Cup.
At the moment, he remains just on the edges of the starting XI with Gareth Southgate, as he has proved over the years, a fiercely loyal coach.

In his pre-match press conference, Southgate made a point of name-checking Bellingham unlike most of the other first-team hopefuls.
But here is a precocious talent who, potentially, would still give England an extra edge in those group games against Iran, United States and Wales and, maybe, could even be THE story of the tournament.
There is certainly no doubt that Bellingham and Declan Rice will form this country’s central midfield axis for the next decade.
Bellingham delivered a better display than the 1-0 loss to Hungary. He was handed a full 90 minutes in Budapest but was guilty of trying a bit too hard.
Clearly, this versatile player believes he should already be starting in this England team.
Bellingham certainly did not make an impression quite like 19-year-old Jamal Musiala, the former England youth player who was given a standing ovation when he was replaced midway inside the second half.
Nevertheless, Bellingham once again proved he can move around the pitch in a far more effective way than Phillips.
He robbed Nico Schlotterbeck to create an early chance for Harry Kane, while he also had a goal-bound long-range drive deflected out for a corner.

There were times when, like Saturday, Bellingham lost the ball when he was trying to create something from nothing.
This is something that will disappear from his game.
Bellingham extended a leg to win the ball and create a good chance for Mason Mount and also won possession on a few other occasions.
The ex-Birmingham ace has already decided that he will stay in Germany for one more year, particularly with Dortmund having already sold Erling Haaland to Manchester City.
But in 12 months here is a player who could be on his way to the Premier League, with Liverpool’s Jurgen Klopp a massive fan. Also, he is wanted by Real Madrid.
Yet it is easy to forget quite how young this player is.
Bellingham made his England debut against Ireland in November 2020 aged 17 and four months.
And he will not even celebrate his 19th birthday until later this month.
Bellingham showed against Germany why he is regarded as one of the world’s top talentsCredit: AFP
Compare this to Frank Lampard, Paul Gascoigne and David Beckham who, weirdly, all made their debuts aged 21 and three months.
Bryan Robson was aged 23, Paul Scholes 22 and six months while Steven Gerrard was 20.
Like all of those, Bellingham has the tools to be an England great. But the question for Southgate is whether the World Cup comes too soon.
The answer could be over the next two matches at Molineux. More

ENGLAND can breathe a huge sigh of relief as Harry Kane’s late penalty prevented them from losing two consecutive Nations League matches. The Three Lions conceded shortly after the interval courtesy of a brilliant team goal – finished off superbly by Jonas Hofmann.
But Nico Schlotterbeck’s clumsiness in the box enabled Harry Kane to level up the scoring and overtake Sir Bobby Charlton in the English goal scoring rankings.
However, Gareth Southgate’s men remain bottom League A Group 3 with Italy to come on Saturday, June 11.

    Grealish stakes big Qatar claim
Jack Grealish possesses that ‘wow factor’ that we need to see grace a World Cup Finals.
He has the ability to change a game in an instant and when he is allowed to play his attacking game free of any constraints, he is a danger to anyone who faces him.
England will be satisfied with a draw from the position they found themselves in, Grealish nearly inspired an unlikely win.
The Man City attacker has to be a sure thing for his ticket to Qatar.

Sometimes you just know too much
At times, two teams can cancel each other out and it was very much the case this evening between two European giants.
Having played each other so often, they know each other’s strengths and weaknesses and how they will set themselves up.
It took the creative wizardry of some of England’s options from the bench to shake the German resolve.
Disappointing having worked so hard to get their noses in front at the Allianz Arena.
    German defences finally breached
It looked like for a long time this evening that England just would not find a way through the resolute German defence.
The addition of Jack Grealish changed the game and gave the hosts a headache that they just could not cope with.
Having to put more players on Grealish to deal with the threat he posed, created pockets of space for his teammates.
Kane managed to get himself a yard of space on Schlotterbeck, causing the German to have a coming together which was deemed enough to prevent a goalscoring opportunity.
VAR coming to the rescue of Gareth Southgate and his players.
Confidence was high after the goal and it was Germany who were holding on at the end to prevent an England winner.
    I’m coming for Roo!
Harry Kane’s goal this evening took him to 50 goals for his country and puts him one step closer to Wayne Rooney’s record of 53 goals.
Tottenham’s striker is keen to achieve this before they even set foot on the plane to Qatar.
There was no doubt with his penalty tonight as he buried it in the bottom corner.

    Bookies none the wiser tonight
Both of these sides are often talked about when it comes to teams who could actually challenge for this year’s FIFA World Cup.
With their domestic leagues including some of Europe’s best sides, they are expected to compete.
Neither side has registered a win yet in the Nations League this campaign.
Fans will not accept these European powerhouses failing to deliver at yet another finals.
Germany made to feel the Kane
Despite the stats showing that both teams had six shots on target over the course of the game, clear-cut chances for England were few and far between.
Harry Kane will feel his night could have been a lot better if it wasn’t for a world-class save from Neuer and an air-swipe at a Jack Grealish cut-back.
To be the best, you set yourself high standards, Kane will know that.
    FT: Germany 1-1 England
The referee brings the game to a close.
For England, this will seem like a point gained.
Germany will be disappointed to let a lead slip so late on.
    Germany 1-1 England
90+4. England are unhappy that Germany do not kick the ball out for the injured Bellingham.
No team is obliged to do so.
There is no repeat of the empathy of Dunkirk.
    Seconds remain.
    Germany 1-1 England
    90+2. Bellingham is down injured.
Germany look to counter attack with Werner bursting into the box.
England manage to snuff out the attack.
Temporarily down to ten men with Bellingham on the floor still.
Germany 1-1 England – Kane chance
    90. Grealish again does brilliantly.
His trickery allows him to square a ball to the oncoming Harry Kane.
The England talisman has a swipe at the ball and misses it.
Gareth Southgate’s side are finishing on the front foot here.
We will have four additional minutes.
    Germany 1-1 England
    88. Harry Kane has his 50th England goal.
What a time to get it.

    Goal – Harry Kane (England)
Germany 1-0 England – VAR review
    86. The referee has been asked to go to the monitor.
Kane was definitely clipped in the box.
The referee awards a penalty to England.
Schlotterbeck is also shown a yellow card for his foul.
    Germany 1-0 England
    84. Bowen does brilliantly out on the right.
He whips a teasing ball into the back post that just needs a touch to go in.
Somehow Klostermann manages to clear it for a corner.
    Germany clear.
    Germany 1-0 England
    82. Germany are struggling to deal with Grealish.
They are having to get numbers over to try and block any crosses he gets into the box.
The corner is worked to Sterling on the edge of the box, he drops the shoulder to get some shooting space but his shot is only troubling fans and not the German keeper.
    Germany 1-0 England
    80. Raheem Sterling is penalised.
Jarrod Bowen is going to be joining us, on for Bukayo Saka.
Bowen immediately runs at Germany given the chance.
    Germany 1-0 England
    78. Werner is offering Germany options with his fresh legs as they play the ball into the channels more.
England are pressing Germany less and less.
Fatigue seems to be setting in a little now.
Germany 1-0 England – Kane chance
    76. Thomas Muller is replaced by Leon Goretzka.
Grealish crosses brilliantly from the left into the path of Harry Kane.
His shot is somehow deflected by the leg of Neuer.
Making himself big and getting a touch.
    Big chance.

    Germany 1-0 England
    74. Grealish runs at the full back and wins a corner.
As the ball is swung in, Maguire gets a head to it and his looping header causes Neuer problems.
The German stopper getting an outstretched hand to it to clear.
Germany counter attack at pace and Pickford makes another good save.
    Germany 1-0 England
    72. Jack Grealish comes on for Mason Mount.
Big things needed from the Man City attacker.
Kane is dropping deeper and deeper looking for the ball.
    Germany 1-0 England
    70. I wonder if Chelsea’s new owners truly realise how much money they will spend on whistles alone for the training ground.
The amount of times Timo Werner and Kai Havertz must be offside in training I am surprised they do not have a kit deal with Birds Eye just to keep them in peas.
Muller has a shot at the back post but Pickford saves well with a strong hand to keep him out.
    Germany 1-0 England
    68. Gundogan goes to ground after coming together with the referee.
The game has to restart with a drop ball.
German fans show their discontent to Bellingham kicking the ball too early.
Die Mannschaft are knocking on the door again here.
    Germany 1-0 England
    66. Hoffman comes off for Gnabry.
Timo Werner comes on for Musiala.
Fresh legs to test the England defence.
    Credit: AFP
    Germany 1-0 England
    64. Germany look the more patient of the two sides.
It is much easier to have that mentality when you have a one-goal lead.
England seem to be rushed in the final third and making simple errors as a result.
    Germany 1-0 England
    62. The travelling fans try to lift their team.
Another promising England attack breaks down when they gift possession back to the hosts.
Both teams’ passing is very poor at the moment.

Shocking moment Jude Bellingham THROWS UP on Munich pitch as England fans laud star for all-action Germany performance

ENGLAND midfielder Jude Bellingham was seen VOMITING on the pitch towards the end of the 1-1 Nations League draw with Germany. The Borussia Dortmund starlet came on as a first-half substitute for the injured Kalvin Phillips, who picked up an early thigh knock.

And he made his presence known all around the pitch as the 18-year-old chased every ball and always looked to close down the Germany players quickly in a highly impressive performance.
As is custom for the box-to-box teenager, he was constantly darting back to help his defence before pushing on in the final third.
No other player made more than his seven tackles as he looked to dominate Hansi Flick’s side, in front of German fans who know him so well.
But Bellingham’s tireless work-rate proved too much in added time… as he was spotted throwing up after tracking back the length of the pitch.

has everything to become a legend, but the World Cup might come too soon
The incident happened just outside the Three Lions’ penalty box when, after one final lung-busting run, the former Birmingham City kid bent over before spewing up on the Allianz Arena grass.
Fans were quick to pick up Bellingham’s exhaustion, as one Twitter user said: “Yo did no one just see Bellingham vomit on the pitch?
Another remarked: “What a performance by Bellingham… topped off with spewing all over the pitch.”
A third added: “Bellingham literally sick of the Germans there.”
