Where England’s 2018 World Cup stars are now with SIXTEEN players from team and standby list set to miss out on Qatar

ENGLAND have undergone quite the transformation since Gareth Southgate took over. Southgate brought 28 players with him to his first tournament which saw England reach the World Cup semi-finals, with a number of them still crucial members of the team four years on.

But as many as 16 of the players who were a part of Southgate’s first tournament squad are set to miss out on the World Cup later this year.
Below we outline what has happened to each player since the Russia World Cup.
JORDAN PICKFORD
EVERTON stopper remains Southgate’s go-to-man between the sticks, starring at the 2020 Euros as England made the final.
Enjoyed a less productive time at club level as he narrowly avoided relegation with The Toffees this season.

PENALTY hero in Russia, but poor form saw him lose his spot in Tottenham’s team after the tournament.
New defensive options emerged and Dier lost his place, but he has made a resurgence at club level this season under Antonio Conte and could be an outside shout to regain a spot come November.

ONE of the few who has remained a key player in defence for England.
Like Walker he has won nine trophies at club level since Russia, and has diversified into a makeshift right-back for Guardiola’s City.
HARRY MAGUIRE
TRANSFERRED to Manchester United from Leicester City the year after the World Cup and became club captain under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
Remains one of Southgate’s favoured options in defence despite some horrific form at club level this season which saw Man United finish with their worst ever defensive record in the Premier League.
JESSE LINGARD
STARTER in 2018, Lingard lost form and consequently his starting spot at both Man United and England as newer options emerged.

JORDAN HENDERSON
LIVERPOOL club captain guided the team to a first Premier League title in nearly 30 years and won the Champions League, FA Cup, League Cup and Club World Cup to go along with it.
Didn’t start at Euro 2020 but his qualities make him an integral part of the squad even when not playing. Southgate confirmed his omission from the most recent squad was to allow him to rest and because he didn’t need to know more about him.
HARRY KANE
ENGLAND’S captain and Tottenham’s talisman. He won the Premier League Player of the Season award in 2021.
Now extremely close to overtaking Wayne Rooney’s England record of 53 England goals, moving on to 50 with a penalty against Germany earlier this week.

PHIL JONES
AS was the norm before the World Cup, injuries blighted his career, and he has remained a Manchester United player all throughout despite his atrocious injury record.
Jones could finally sold by Man United this summer having made just 35 appearances for the Red Devils senior side since the 2018 World Cup.
FABIAN DELPH
AFTER a successful year as Man City’s left-back under Guardiola, the return of Benjamin Mendy saw Delph’s minutes cut significantly.
He was then sold to Everton in 2019 but has failed to nail down a starting role in the squad, and has made just 41 appearances for the Toffees since his switch.
ASHLEY YOUNG
YOUNG was Southgate’s first-choice left wing-back in Russia, but the emergence of Luke Shaw and Ben Chilwell among others saw his time in the position soon fade out.

PERHAPS the most surprising one who could miss out on the next World Cup from this squad seeing as he was one of England’s star boys at the time.
Continues to play for Man United but missed a penalty in the Euros final and underwent major surgery on a shoulder injury which has seen him struggle for form since his return this season.
DELE ALLI
STRUGGLED to carry on the strong form which had earned him a spot with England that summer.
Lost his place at Spurs before transferring to Everton in January, but has still failed to find the reset button for his career there.
RUBEN LOFTUS-CHEEK
HAD a storming season following the World Cup but stagnated and has since lost his place in the England squad.
Went on loan to Fulham in 2020 but suffered relegation. Has since found a spot as a squad player in Chelsea’s midfield, making 24 league appearances last season.
TRENT ALEXANDER-ARNOLD
THEN aged just 19, the right-back has since gone on to become one of the world’s football’s most effective creators, smashing records for defensive assisting numbers at Liverpool.
He’s won six trophies at club level but somehow remains down the pecking order in the England set-up with the likes of Reece James and the aforementioned Walker and Trippier keeping the 23-year-old down in fourth choice.

ALWAYS second fiddle to Pickford in the England set-up regardless of club form, he has earned just seven caps since the World Cup.
Relegated with Burnley this season, he could be subject to a £40million move to newly-promoted Nottingham Forest.
TOM HEATON
THE GOALKEEPER on England’s standby list, he was usurped by Pope as the No1 at the Clarets due to injury and subsequently lost his place as a starter the following season as well.

THERE may not have been any trains running to get supporters home.But at Hampden last night Scotland got back on track.

A week on from the World Cup campaign hitting the buffers and being derailed, it was all aboard the Nations League.
And never mind ScotRail.
It was Scott-Ral who were just the ticket for the Tartan Army.
Steaming in at the back post like two locomotives.
Arriving bang on time.
Tony Ralston and Scott McKenna were just the ticket in this 2-0 victory over Armenia.
And this much-needed win gave Steve Clarke a platform to build on now ahead of games against the Republic of Ireland on Saturday and Armenia again next week.
This was the comfortable night he needed on his third anniversary as Scotland boss.

After last week’s dismal display against Ukraine, his players simply had to perform.
Anything less than a victory here and his critics would have been lining to annihilate him.
But it was clear from early on that Scotland would be winning all three points.
Let’s get it right, Armenia are a poor, poor side.
It beggars believe how on earth they managed to beat the Republic of Ireland last weekend.
Yet Scotland still had to turn up. They still had to find ways through a team that had ten men behind the ball virtually at all times.

That’s often been the downfall of our national teams in years gone by.
Scotland tend to struggle to break weaker teams down when they’re so defensive.
Yet the way Clarke’s side handled this game was worthy of real credit.
There was no-one in dark blue feeling sorry for themselves after last week’s World Cup misery.
Of the ones who started against Ukraine – like John McGinn, Callum McGregor and skipper Andy Robertson – there was a real intend.
While fresh legs like Stuart Armstrong, John Souttar and scorers McKenna and Ralston brought added energy.
Chances are there will be more changes to the line-up for this weekend’s clash with the Irish in Dublin.
But this team did everything asked of them here.
Scotland could have been two or three goals to the good inside the first 15 minutes.
Stand-out performer Armstrong struck the post with an early shot before Robertson had a drilled shot saved. Next Jack Henry and McGinn came close to hitting the net.
There was a lull after that.

Armenia had so many bodies back defending that Scotland had to keep the ball moving quickly to carve them open.
But there was always the right balance between patience and urgency.
It just felt inevitable that the team would take the lead.
What was maybe surprising, right enough, was where the opening goal came from.
Big Ralston had had a sensational, fairytale season for Celtic and did score a handful of important goals.
But even he wouldn’t have been expecting to mark his first Scotland start a goal. Yet didn’t he just.
With 28 minutes on the clock he timed his run perfectly to get on the end if a superb cross from Armstrong.
Planting his header down into the ground, and back across the goalkeeper, it was 1-0 Scotland.

Everyone could settle after that.
The way Armenia were set up, there was virtually no chance of them getting back in the game.
If there were any fans still concerned, Scotland’s second goal certainly made sure of the victory.
It came after 40 minutes with another unlikely scorer.
Towering McKenna just wasn’t going to be stopped from powering a McGinn corner into the net.
It was his ball from the moment it left the Aston Villa midfielder’s boot and there wasn’t an Armenia player capable of getting in his way.
It was dreamland stuff for the Nottingham Forest centre-back who went into this game on the back of his promotion to the Premier League.
It could have been even better too.
McKenna had the ball in the back of the Armenia net deep into stoppage time at the end of the first-half.
Only this time when the VAR took a look at it the goal was disallowed for off-side.
The second half was a foregone conclusion in many respects.
The game was won and the points in the bag.
The only question was whether Scotland would add to their goals tally.
Che Adams had certainly enough sights of goal to get on the scoresheet.
But this was a night when his best efforts came to nothing.
The Southampton striker got himself into some great position and put a shift in for the team.
But his finishing wasn’t sharp enough when opportunities came.
The closest Scotland came to adding a third goal came in the final ten minutes.
McGinn looked desperate to score and he unleashed a thunderbolt of a shot which was heading for the roof of the net before the Armenian keeper got his fingernails to it.
The Scotland fans’ favourite had another go in the dying moments but curled an effort which was just too high.
McGinn just wasn’t going to get his goal despite his desire.
In the end, though, the 2-0 victory was more than enough to send the supporters home happy. Albeit not on the train.

Defeat hard to take so late
Wales will need to learn their lessons from their defeat today.
They live on to fight another day in the Nations League, all be it an uphill challenge now.
In the World Cup, such a lapse of concentration after working so hard to get back into the game, could result in a flight home.

The Cardiff City Stadium erupted when the home side equalised in stoppage-time, only to have their hearts broken.
These youngsters can feel proud of their showing.
