Gary Lineker slams Gareth Southgate for ‘leaving England’s most creative player on the bench’ in shock 1-0 loss to Italy

GARY LINEKER criticised Trent Alexander-Arnold’s exclusion from the England team as he identified a lack of creativity in Gareth Southgate’s side.England lost 1-0 to Italy and have not scored a goal from open play in 450 minutes of football.

Lineker also bemoaned James Maddison’s absence from the squadCredit: Getty
The defeat at the San Siro relegated the Three Lions from Nations League group A but Lineker has bigger concerns.
The Match of the Day presenter feels Southgate has got things wrong by not placing his trust in Liverpool star Alexander-Arnold, who provided 12 assists in 32 Premier League games last season.
Lineker also believes Leicester star James Maddison is worthy of a place in the England squad because of his eye for a pass.
Lineker tweeted following the defeat: “A gentle reminder that England’s most creative midfielder, James Maddison was not in the squad of 28.

“And England’s most creative footballer, Trent Alexander-Arnold sat on the bench getting splinters in his arse…”
Lineker was not alone in his criticism of Southgate as the England boss was booed by the travelling fans at the end of the match.
England are five games without a win, their worst run since 2014, and have only one match to try and turn things around before the World Cup – a Wembley meeting with Germany on Monday.
But Southgate is ready for the pressure and has faith his players can get back to winning ways.

He said after the match: “We are on a run of bad results, it’s for us to put that right.
“The only way to do that is to stick what we believe, stick with what’s got us success in previous tournaments and in the end the players have got to stay really tight.
“There’s going to be a lot of noise but that will be around me and that’s absolutely fine. It’s my job to take that pressure for them.

Giacomo Raspadori’s second half strike was the difference.

It’s also England’s worst run in 22 years.

Channel 4 cut away from their post-match interview with Gareth Southgate to instead air GOGGLEBOX.
The Three Lions put in another shoddy performance as their winless run extended to five matches.
England watched on helplessly as Giacomo Raspadori’s 86th minute strike sealed the win for Italy.
And the result condemned England to relegation in Nations League A, setting up a horror draw for Euro 2024.

Three Lions fans waited with bated breath for Southgate’s interview after the final whistle.
With the World Cup on the horizon, supporters wanted to know what his thoughts on the performance were.
But just before Southgate was due to speak, Nations League broadcaster Channel 4 ended their football programme.
And they instead booted up an episode of reality TV show Gogglebox.
England fans who had been waiting for answers from Southgate were left fuming.

Many blasted Channel 4 for the bizarre decision to cut away from the Three Lions gaffer.
And it means that Monday’s dead rubber against Germany will be the final time fans can hear Southgate’s thoughts before the World Cup boots up in November.
One tweeted: “Pretty stunned Channel 4 don’t have a post-game interview with Southgate. So many questions after that.”
Another boomed: “Channel 4 not showing Southgate’s post-match interview until gone midnight because they’ve got to show Gogglebox?
“Put it back on the BBC where it belongs ffs.”
One yelled: “Just when you don’t think it could get worse, Channel 4 don’t show us the interview with Southgate.
“We’ve got to go straight to people stroking their dogs and eating muffins in front of the TV.”
    GATE KEEPER
Another cried: “Finishing before any interview with Southgate having to talk live about that dire match, purely for Gogglebox, is nothing short of a disgrace.”
Southgate still managed to deliver his interview despite the cameras not being on.
After being booed by travelling fans at the final whistle, he said: “There’s going to be a lot of noise but that will be around me and that’s absolutely fine. It’s my job to take that pressure for them.
“I understand the reaction at the end because that’s the results we’ve had in this competition. It’s an understandable emotional reaction.
“It is difficult for me to be too critical of the performance. We had more possession, more shots, more shots on target. For large parts we played very well.
“We didn’t deal with the decisive moment defensively and we had moments to be more decisive in their final third and our quality wasn’t quite right.
    PRESSURE MOUNTING
“It’s a spell where ultimately results are going to be the thing everyone reacts to but I thought there were a lot of positives for us as a team. A lot of good individual performances.
“I personally thought the performance was a step in the right direction but I perfectly understand that because of the result that’s not going to be the reaction.
“It is really difficult to pinpoint why we’re not scoring. I think we’re getting into the right areas and we had the moments we would have had in the past. People just didn’t deliver that final piece of quality.
“We’ve said we’re not in an ideal situation in terms of numbers of players playing at a high level regularly. But we’ve got to keep working on it and make sure we stay on track.
“The players in the dressing room know this was a game they could have won. And if they take their chances and defend the goal better, then we do win.
“It’s fine margins. We’re playing some of the biggest football nations and the fine margins are decisive.

“We can’t say there’s no value to these games. These were important matches against top level teams. As I said there were a lot of reasons for the results in the summer.
“Here, we haven’t got the result we needed or wanted. So we are in a run of bad results. It’s for us to put that right.”

The result saw them RELEGATED from League A of the Nations League for the first time ever.
After an underwhelming first half from both teams, Italy broke the deadlock in the 68th minute thanks to a fantastic strike from Giacomo Raspadori.
The striker brought the ball down on the edge of the box following a cross from Leonardo Bonucci before cutting inside and unleashing a an excellent shot into the bottom right corner.
Southgate reacted quickly by making a double substitution.

England ratings: Dier Three Lions’ best player on long-overdue return but Sterling struggles to replicate Chelsea form

DRAB ENGLAND looked bang off trend in Milan Fashion Week  – and were deservedly and embarrassingly relegated from the top flight of the Nations League. As a collective, Gareth Southgate’s men yet again did not do enough to create chances and have now gone five matches without scoring from open play.

Pressure is building on Three Lions manager Gareth SouthgateCredit: Rex
There was not the same defensive mayhem as in the humiliating home defeat by Hungary, despite a nervy start.
But one mistake by Kyle Walker was enough to allow man of the match Giacomo Raspadori to grab the only goal.
Eric Dier’s return and Jude Bellingham’s continuing progress were the only significant positives from another dismal night in this competition.
The most worrying thing is that England’s starting 11 for their opening World Cup game against Iran in less than two months may well not look much different from this.

The performance will need to be.
    NICK POPE – 7
Given a rare chance to show his mettle against top-level opposition in absence of injured Jordan Pickford.
Made a fine early stop from Scamacca, then didn’t have much to do until second-half saves from Raspadori and Gabbiadini.
Questions remain about his distribution, particularly under pressure over medium range.

    KYLE WALKER – 5
Elder statesman of the Friends Reunited Russia 2018 World Cup back three tried to calm things down after the nervy start.
Had a few hairy moments, not all his fault, but mostly sound on and off the ball.
Until, that is, he let Raspadori get on the wrong side of him and then cut inside to score.
    ERIC DIER – 7
Made a deserved, some would say overdue, return after last England appearance in November 2020.
Went about the unglamorous work of, you know, defending, with the minimum of frills and fuss.
Important-looking block on Bryan Cristante shot in the first half, nicked ball off same player in second.
Dier wrestling with West Ham’s Gianluca ScamaccaCredit: Getty
    HARRY MAGUIRE – 5
All over the shop at the start and outmuscled by Scamacca for the header saved by Pope.
Took a deep breath and improved at the back, while making a nuisance of himself at the other end from set-pieces.
Got an important foot in on dangerman Raspadori, something Walker didn’t manage for the goal.
    REECE JAMES – 6
Did his defensive work well enough after everyone had a sticky start.
Had more chance to show the other side to his game than Saka but could not reproduce the quality of his Chelsea deliveries.
Swung a second-half free kick over the bar from a decent position after Sterling was fouled.
    JUDE BELLINGHAM – 7
Did his best to take a bad game and make it better, covering huge amount of ground..
So refreshing to see an England midfielder willing to give and go, and he was England’s biggest threat after the break.
Sent late header over bar but has to start against Iran in Qatar, only question is whether in a midfield two or a three.
Bellingham impressed in the midfieldCredit: Getty
    DECLAN RICE – 6
Full of energy and commitment as usual, but without a great deal to show for it.
Spent some of the first half fire-fighting as the play mostly bypassed England’s midfield.
A nailed-on starter for the World Cup, the debate continues about whom to put around him to bring the best out of West Ham skipper and team.
    BUKAYO SAKA – 5
A lot of Italy’s first-half attacks came down their right and it must be quite an adjustment going to left wing-back from right wing.
Had little chance to show what he could offer going forward because his team were often on the back foot.
But things did not improve before he was taken off and it would be a surprise to see this tried again.
    PHIL FODEN – 6
The closest England came to having anything close to an attacking threat in the first half.
Started dropping deep early on in search of the ball as team struggled for good possession.
Not as effective after the break but rightly annoyed that Kane didn’t notice or didn’t pass to him on one occasion.
    HARRY KANE – 5
Until forcing a double save from Donnarumma in the last 15 minutes, never looked like closing in on Wayne Rooney’s England record.
Guilty of wasting half-openings, including first-half shot over bar and faiture to play in Foden in the second.
Came off worse in clash of heads with Rafael Toloi, thankfully with no lingering effects
    RAHEEM STERLING – 5
Had a disappointing game by the high standards he has set himself.
Unable to match the zip of his former Manchester City team-mate on the other flank.
Tempted Bonucci into a foul on the edge of the box but this was his only noteworthy contribution.

    SUBS
    Grealish (for Saka, 72’) – 5
Brought on as part of a tactical switch to 4-2-3-1 but it didn’t help much and he struggled to make an impact.
    Shaw (for Walker, 72) – 6
Like Maguire, trusted despite his lack of club minutes because of lack of alternatives. At least sent in a dangerous cross. More

Italy 1 England 0: Three Lions RELEGATED from Nations League A and face horror Euro 2024 draw after lacklustre display

SO have you got World Cup fever yet? Are you hanging up your wallchart, buying England’s hideous new shirt, and belting out World In Motion and This Time (We’ll Get It Right)?

    Nope? Thought not.
Not after England were condemned to Nations League relegation, without a win – or a single open-play goal – in five matches and with just one more game to go before a corrupt and immoral tournament in Qatar.
England’s millionaire footballers may have got themselves a hefty tax cut from the Chancellor yesterday but Gareth Southgate’s stock is dropping faster than sterling on the currency exchanges.
This Three Lions side lacked identity and was seriously short on entertainment value as they stank out the San Siro and were beaten by Giacomo Raspadori’s thumping second-half finish.

The biggest roar of the night from the England fans came when a paper plane – national symbol of boredom – was sent onto the pitch from way up in the nosebleed seats at this vast old stadium.
Southgate will recall similar scenes before the last World Cup in Russia – and that campaign went well enough.
But on the basis of this Nations League campaign, nobody should be complacent about England even progressing from a World Cup group which features Iran, USA and Wales.
This bloody great crumbling ruin of a stadium is condemned to the bulldozers but it still holds a great mystique.

England hadn’t played here since 1939 and they haven’t beaten the Azzurri on Italian soil since 1961.
Southgate gave Eric Dier his first England cap for two years and employed Bukayo Saka in the problem left-wing-back position.
The England manager’s favoured back five was rolled out – at least until Italy scored – and it is likely to be his Plan A in Qatar.
When Southgate spoke on the eve of this match of having  ‘compromised’ in his decision-making during a miserable stretch of games in June, he was probably referring to the fact that he has frequently used a crowd-pleasing flat back four – which has rarely produced their better performances.
The Italians – champions of Europe but absent from Qatar after a shocking play-off defeat by North Macedonia – had West Ham’s Gianluca Scamacca leading the line.

The Napoli striker bagged a brilliant goal to undo England’s defenceCredit: Getty
After a stripping opera singer – who tore off her cloak between God Save The King and the Italian anthem – the hosts made a rapid start.
England, in that God-awful kit, were sluggish – Maguire making an early error and then Federico Dimarco crossing to the far post where Scamacca skyscraping header was clawed away by Nick Pope, deputising for the injured Jordan Pickford.
It was scratchy stuff from England. They gave away far too many free-kicks in their own half – a trait which Southgate will be keen for them to ditch at the tournament.
There were moments when the Three Lions threatened on the break, especially when Saka – strangely voted as England’s Player of the Year by supporters – led a charge but Kane boomed his shot way over.
And by half-time, the match appeared to be dying a death. It was as bad as the goalless draw between the same two sides at Molineux in June – and those of us who lived through that one can assure you that that is saying something.

Italy made life difficult for even the most talented of England’s starsCredit: PA
Dier looked solid in the centre of the back three, as he has done for Tottenham ever since Antonio Conte’s arrival, and there were moments of promise from Jude Bellingham, yet the Borussia Dortmund kid wasn’t seeing enough of the ball.
But we were grasping at straws of positivity. As a spectacle, it was an abysmal 45 minutes.
The second period had a lively start – Dier making a fine saving tackle to deny Bryan Cristante a crack on goal, then a Raheem Sterling burst stopped by Leonardo Bonucci’s foul on the edge of the box.
But Reece James, taking most of the set-pieces, blazed the free-kick well over.
England’s set-pieces, such a strength at the last World Cup in Russia, have been largely poor for some time now.
Southgate has three of the best dead-ball merchants in world football in James Ward-Prowse, Kieran Trippier and Trent Alexander-Arnold – perhaps he need to find a way of getting one of them into his team.

England are now on a run of five games without victory ahead of November’s World CupCredit: Getty
From a James corner, Kane suffered a horrible clash of heads with Rafael Toloi but after lengthy treatment, the England captain continued.
But on 68 minutes, the Italians scored with a classy goal but one which will not have filled Kyle Walker with any great pride.
A gorgeous ball over the top from Bonucci caught England’s defence dozing and Raspadori teased Walker this way and that before he thumped a belting finish into the bottom corner.
Southgate sent on Grealish and Luke Shaw for Saka and Walker, moving back to a back four.
And there was suddenly more spark about England – Kane forcing a double save from Gianluigi Donnarumma with two angled drives.
But Pope had to be alert to deny Manolo Gabbiadini with his legs and then Dimarco drove against the inside of the post with Italy looking far more incisive than their visitors.
