      ENGLAND and Italy played out a 0-0 draw at Molineux this evening – and the 2,000 or so kids in the stands were not impressed. Polish referee Szymon Marciniak’s final whistle was met with BOOS from a number of the young England fans lucky enough to be inside the stadium.

      The chaos that marred last year’s Euro 2020 final meant this game was played behind closed doors, although children accompanied by an adult were allowed in.
      And those that were in the stands were not afraid to make their feelings known at full-time.
      Some of the youngsters who excitedly took their seats 90 minutes earlier hoping to see Gareth Southgate’s stars score at least once loudly booed when the dull stalemate finally came to an end.
      Not the entire 2,000 odd school kids jeered the Three Lions off the field, but there were audible boos from the stands at Molineux.

      One positive that can be taken from England’s dull display this evening is Fikayo Tomori’s excellent performance on his full debut.
      He looked comfortable in his position throughout and played with a high level of confidence and composure.

      When speaking to Channel 4, the England boss said:
      “There were things we did really well in Germany and things we needed to improve on, we did improve like beating their midfield press, we had two or three really good chances which we need to score, we lacked the sharpness in the final third.
      “In the second half we were much the better team. When you are pushing and there is no crowd behind you and that makes a difference.”
      “We are trying to move the ball through a good, well-organised team. We gave the ball into our forward players, we have given them all a go and tried to refresh it so that sharpness in the final third is not there. I was pleased with the general performance.
      “We have been too reliant on Harry Kane and Raheem Sterling and other players have to step into that space. A number of them have been able to it with their clubs but have not converted at international level.
      “Today Aaron Ramsdale did very well and make a couple of important saves, his composure with the ball is what we hoped.
      “Fikayo Tomori did really well and pleased he has come through from the slight injury he had, that will give us more depth.
      “James Ward-Prowse used the ball well, controlled the game and his passing was good.
      “Tammy Abraham was fine and was not unhappy with his performance.
      “This has been a difficult series of matches, two away game and you saw how difficult Hungary are to play against.
      “Then in Munich then when we have the advantage we did not have the crowd. Physically and psychologically that makes a difference.”

      Hungary held Germany to a 1-1 draw in Budapest.
      Marco Rossi’s side took the lead through an early goal from Zsolt Nagy.
      But it took just three minutes for Jonas Hofmann to level the score.
      Italy remain at the top of the table, with Hungary just one point behind.
      Germany closely follow, and England are at the bottom.

      When speaking to Channel 4, Mount said:
      “It is frustrating, we want to win, create chances and score goals. I probably should have done better with my chances, we had a few other chances and it is something we have to look at.
      “We are keeping clean sheets so it is something that is a positive but we have to work at it.
      “We have had chances today and probably should have scored, sometimes you go through little periods where it is difficult.
      “We have to keep working hard in training, look where we can improve.
      “We have the players to to do that, the talent and quality, just work at it.
      “I was in a 10 role so gave me freedom to roam and find spaces, linking the midfield to the attacking boys.
      “I found myself in spaces to shoot but did not to do well enough from my shot but it was too easy for the keeper.
      “It is a difficult one to take because I feel we could have come away with more.
      “We want to win every game, even if it is a friendly. We have looked a the last two games, felt confident in what we do but it is a tough one.”

      For Steve Clarke this was a pitiful performance from his team which was shocking as the one against Ukraine.
      It was little wonder the travelling fans were so incensed at time up.
      They stood stunned after the final whistle at what they’d just witnessed.
      The performance was abysmal with the goals Scotland conceded nothing short of shambolic.

      Grant Hanley hardly got up off the ground in his attempt to jump and cut out Duffy’s header.
      Would John Souttar have done better? Who knows.
      But it was certainly the type of defending which backed up the supporters who were bemused by Hanley’s selection ahead of the new Rangers centre-back.

      He replaced Jack Hendry who was culpable at Ireland’s second goal which wasn’t any easier on the eye.
      Hendry challenged Parrott in the air when a long ball was punted forward. But the Brugge stopper was guilty of being far too weak.
      He then got sucked infield when the ball broke for little Obafemi and had no clue where Parrott was when he ran in behind him to score.
      Anthony Ralston couldn’t tuck in quickly enough either.
      The Celtic right-back was actually one of Scotland’s best players.
      Nobody could say he wasn’t up for it with his will to will and desire typically there for all to see.
      There just wasn’t enough of that out there in light blue Scotland shirts.

      Ireland just weren’t made to work for their two first-half goals which was the most galling thing.
      There was also a real lack of cutting edge from Scotland’s attack in the moments when they did get into good positions.
      John McGinn had two big chances to score when Ireland were mugged when they tried to play the ball out from the back.
      But on each occasion the Aston Villa man lacked the composure to score.
      His first effort fell tamely into the arms of keeper Caoimhin Kelleher while his next attempt missed the target altogether.
      Clarke could have made any number of chances at the half-time break.
      The one he opted for was to take off Hendry and put on Billy Gilmour in an attempt to get some control in midfield where there had been none.
      But before the Chelsea man could even begin to pick up the pace of the game Scotland were 3-0 down.
      This time there was absolutely nothing anyone could do about it.
      Obafemi’s strike from 30 yards was nothing short of sensational with Gordon blameless between the sticks this time.
      There was just no way back after that.
      Ireland’s third goal hit the net just five minutes into the second half but it was game over.
      Clarke tried to mix things up again by taking off Che Adams, Ryan Christie and John McGinn and replacing them by Jacob Brown, Ross Stewart and Stuart Armstrong.
      But it was too late.
      If anything the home side were hugely unfortunate not to score a fourth goal and really humiliate Scotland.
      In 61 minutes substitute Scott Hogan looked to have scored with a header. But Hanley managed to hook the ball off the lines with millimetres to spare.
      Just about everyone inside the stadium as expecting the linesman to flag that it had crossed the line.
      There was even a VAR check to make sure the official’s equipment wasn’t faulty. But it turned out that Hanley did make a last ditch clearance.
      All it did was keep the score down because there was no way Scotland were getting back into the game at that stage.
      Sub Stewart had a late chance to pull a goal back but the Sunderland striker asked for far too much time inside the penalty box and didn’t get his shot away quickly enough.
      It pretty much summed up Scotland’s day.

      So tonight, when England face Italy in the Nations League, there is undoubtedly an edge.
      Few Three Lions fans would have failed to take some pleasure in seeing Italy fail to qualify for this winter’s World Cup so soon after winning the Euros.
      But now comes a chance to stick it to them directly.

      But seeing the Italian shirts will still be like a rag to a bull – and England fans will hope it can spark the Three Lions to go for the kill after two lacklustre performances in the Nations League so far.
      Not only can England get some sort of revenge – they badly need a result to boost their Nations League campaign after a loss to Hungary and draw in Germany.
      It won’t be easy though – Italy have lost just two of their last 15 games against England.
