Fans all say same thing as Adams is ‘assaulted’ while through on goal but rival only sees yellow in Scotland vs Ukraine

FANS and pundits were furious Ukraine defender Valeriy Bondar escaped red for “violently assaulting” goal-bound Scotland striker Che Adams.John McGinn’s 70th-minute opener and a double from sub Lyndon Dykes put the Scots top of their Nations League group with a dazzling 3-0 win at Hampden Park.
“He absolutely wipes Che Adams out there!” 🗣️Great strength and skill from Che Adams to get away before he’s taken down by Bondar. Should it have been more than a yellow? 💥#SCOUKR pic.twitter.com/Cl0dDWQRKj— Premier Sports (@PremierSportsTV) September 21, 2022

Adams was sent flying backwards to the ground after Bondar’s body-charge
But social media blitzed into Bondar in the same way the Scots turned up the pressure late on.
The Shakhtar Donetsk star was only booked for “rugby tackling” Adams.
The Southampton frontman had snaked past the Ukraine midfield and was speeding towards the area when Bondar stood his ground and shoulder-charged Adams’ shoulder.
Adams was flattened and on his side as Premier Sports pundit Michael Stewart called for Bondar to be dismissed for “wiping out” the Leicester-born ace.

Stewart told viewers: “That tackle I think perhaps justifies a red card.
‘Of course he’ll be thinking there’s defenders there who are helping out to produce just a yellow card.
“But you watch Bondar here. He absolutely wipes him out.”
Fans on social media agreed, one saying: “Violent assault – not a ‘tackle’. Definite red.”

And other suggested Adams was fortunate not to have been seriously injured.
This tweet summed up that opinion: “It’s a terrible cynical challenge to make. They are ones that can really really hurt the opponent.”
Another argued: “What’s the point in VAR if we don’t use it that is a red card all day long.”
And many comments hit harder than Bondar did, with claims like: ”This isn’t red because he’s the last man. It’s red because it’s assault!”

Scotland 3 Ukraine 0: John McGinn and Lyndon Dykes strike as Steve Clarke’s men go top of Nations League group

THIS was one of those ‘if only’ nights for Scotland.Just not the one we all feared with 71 minutes on the clock.

No, this late and dramatic victory for Steve Clarke’s side at Hampden had the Tartan Army wishing ‘if only… they were all like this.’
Nil-nil wouldn’t have been the worst result in this must-not-lose Nations League clash with Ukraine.
But three sensational goals inside 16 pulsating minutes got three crucial points.
Super John McGinn broke the deadlock in 71 minutes before substitute Lyndon Dykes grabbed a late, late double to seal a stunning and fully deserved victory.

There was so much to enjoy about this Scotland performance on a night when the manager went with a fairly unexpected line-up and formation.
You just know his critics would have been shaking their heads disapprovingly when they saw Clarke had ditched his usual defensive back-three for a new-look back-four.
Naysayers asking why he’d turned his back on his go-to system after all these years. Especially in a game of such huge importance.
Yet the main reason Clarke has favoured that formation is to accommodate two of his squad’s big hitters, Kieran Tierney and Andy Robertson.
    Most read in Football
And with his skipper ruled out through injury there was no real need to stick with it.
Scotland also finished the last gut-wrenching World Cup play-off game with Ukraine with a back-four – after being overrun in midfield initially – so it made perfect sense for Clarke to revert back to it.
Six of the team that played that fateful night didn’t make this starting line-up for one reason or another.
But then Ukraine looked different too with Arsenal’s Oleksandr Zinchenko absence a major plus for Scotland given how much he dominated that last clash back in June.
The Tartan Army just wanted an overall better performance this time and not to go home wondering what might have been.
Of course, getting one wasn’t necessarily going to mean we wouldn’t get the other.
Before kick-off there were the expected boos and jeers from the stands during the minute’s applause for the Queen from those who find it impossible to sit or stand quietly for 60 seconds.
But the way Clarke’s team started the game had the masses on their feet and making the right sort of noise.
Scotland were terrific from the off.
There was a real purpose to the way they pressed Ukraine with stand-in captain McGinn leading off the front.
But it was one half-chance after another. Near misses rather than blatant ones.
Ryan Christie was superb all night and kept getting himself into little pockets of space.
Nathan Patterson was initially a major threat down the right flank too and looking in the mood to continue his outstanding club form for Everton.
The former Rangers kid almost had a chance to score after 15 minutes before being crowded out inside the box. Seconds later he delivered a cross which was glanced just wide by McGinn.
It was all looking so promising for him and Scotland. Yet with 23 minutes on the clock disaster struck.
Stuart Armstrong smashed a shot the Ukraine keeper saved and when Christie failed to score with the rebound Ukraine moved to break forward.
Patterson showed his diligent side by chasing back Ruslan Malinovskyi, only to fall awkwardly when he made his challenge.
Right away he knew he’d tweaked something, raising his arm in the air to signal immediately to the bench.
And that was his night over.
There was classy embrace form Ukraine boss Oleksandr Petrakov as Patterson went up the tunnel.

But Clarke must have wondered there and then if he was going to get any luck whatsoever against Ukraine.
The incident deflated the entire home support with a hush around Hampden for a good ten minutes after Patterson went off.
There was no blame attacked to the Ukraine midfielder for the incident. But just seconds before the break there was a flashpoint which had the Scotland supporters furious.
Striker Che Adams tried to burst through the middle but was completely taken out by defender Valeriy Bondar with a raised arm challenge and deliberate collision to prevent him from running through.
Italian referee Maurizio Mariani reached for his yellow card, but there was definitely an argument that it could have been worthy of another look on VAR. But that didn’t happen.
Every time Bondar touched the ball in the second half he got booed by the home fans.
Ukraine’s physicality was actually one of the notable aspects of the first-half.
No6 Taras Stepanenko went into the ref’s book for a late tackle on McGinn and was fortunate to escape another caution for a similar foul before the break.
His manager clearly realised how luck he’d been because he subbed the Shakhtar Donetsk star at the break.
    But Scotland didn’t let up.
Even after good opportunities came and went they didn’t let their heads drop.
Adams had a double chance to score in 63 minutes but hit the crossbar with his first header before the Ukraine keeper used to his legs to stop his second.
Seconds later Armstrong had his manager holding his head in his hands.
But it was coming. The goal was on its way. And in 71 minutes it arrived.
McGinn received a ball on the edge of the Ukraine box and held off that man Bondar.
With brilliant accuracy the Aston Villa star then hit the net with a sensational shot across the keeper.
The fear was that Ukraine still had time to nick an equaliser.
But Clarke’s men had other ideas.
A corner from sub Ryan Fraser picked out Dykes and his header found the same corner McGinn did moments earlier to make it 2-0 with 79 minutes on the clock.
Eight minutes later another delivery from the Newcastle man saw Dykes out jump his marker to grab his second.

Nathan Patterson suffers fresh injury setback as Everton and Scotland star is stretchered off against Ukraine

NATHAN PATTERSON’S bad luck appears to have struck once again.Having finally managed to break into Frank Lampard’s Everton side this season, the 20-year old was stretchered off in Scotland’s Nations League clash with Ukraine.

Patterson left Rangers for the Toffees in January in a then-club record sale for the Ibrox club.
He initially struggled to make any sort of impact at Goodison Park, being restricted last season to a sole FA Cup appearance against non-league Boreham Wood – and even then he was hooked at half-time.
Just as he looked set to finally get his Premier League debut, he suffered an ankle injury in training in early April.
It turned out to be a nasty one that required surgery and his season was over.
Patterson has returned with a vengeance this campaign, however, and has firmly made the right wing back slot his own at Everton, even after the return of club legend Seamus Coleman from injury.
But cruelly, he has have suffered another setback.
Barely 20 minutes into the Nations League match at Hampden, Patterson landed awkwardly when fighting for possession.
He was initially able to walk off the pitch himself, but a stretcher was subsequently called for and he was taken off.
Boss Steve Clarke was forced into a 25th minute change with Aaron Hickey coming on.
Speaking after the game that ended in a comfortable 3-0 win for the Scots, the head coach confirmed ‘it didn’t look good.’
Both Everton and Scotland will be sweating on Patterson’s fitness with some big games on the horizon.
It’s the Republic of Ireland on Saturday followed by a return clash with Ukraine next Tuesday.

But Germany have suffered a squad setback following the news of Goretzka, 27, and Neuer’s absence.
The Bayern Munich duo will also miss Friday’s match at home to Hungary as a result.
Hoffenheim’s Oliver Baumann, 32, will replace keeper Neuer, 36, and while Dortmund’s Julian Brandt, 26, tested negative, he has also been withdrawn.
Further call-ups will be announced in due course.
England have also been hit by injury woe after Manchester City midfielder Kalvin Phillips was forced to pull out due to a shoulder problem.

He was replaced by Liverpool’s Jordan Henderson, 32, who has recovered from a knock quicker than anticipated.
Henderson missed the last three games in all competitions for the Reds after struggling with a hamstring problem.
His setback initially saw him fail to be named in the latest 28-man squad.
But after Phillips, 26, was withdrawn, Southgate has turned to ex-Sunderland anchorman Henderson.

Dier BANS mum from stadium as he fears fan abuse is getting worse two years after charging into stands to confront troll

ERIC DIER has banned his mum from going to games because he fears abuse is getting worse. The defender, included in the England squad for the Nations League games against Italy and Germany, revealed friends and other family members were abused during Tottenham’s 2-2 draw at Chelsea last month.

Dier, 28, was banned for four matches and fined £40,000 for jumping into the crowd to confront a fan who abused his brother in March 2020.
Quizzed about fan behaviour, Dier said: “It’s definitely got worse. It is a huge, huge problem. There are some things I find very strange. It is not nice.
“My mum has not been to an away game. She would love to but I would be worried about it — and that’s crazy, isn’t it? All of our families go through it.
“Every player’s parents have been watching them since they were kids and have gone through that kind of stuff.”

Although mum Louise was not at Stamford Bridge on August 14, other members of Dier’s family were.
He added: “I had some family and friends at the Chelsea away game and they had problems and stuff. Not nice ones either. It was verbal not physical but, like, bad stuff.
“One incident was in the Tottenham away end. I am saying it is football fans in general — but I also want to emphasise that it was both sets of fans.”
Dier, who hopes to win his 46th cap against Italy in Milan on Friday, is clearly annoyed over his FA ban in 2020.

He claimed he had left the pitch and clambered over rows of seats in an attempt to protect his brother Patrick, who was involved in an argument.
Dier said: “I don’t know what I can say about it because I don’t know if I’ll get banned or fined again or whatever.
“But I don’t regret it at all and I’d do it again. For my family, team-mates, anyone, a friend of mine. I consider myself to be extremely loyal.”
Meanwhile, Dier is desperate to finally get on the St George’s Park wall of fame.
The Tottenham defender has been rewarded after his strong performances at the back for Antonio Conte by being included in Gareth Southgate’s latest squad.
Dier last played in a 4-0 win over Iceland in November 2020. He was called up by Southgate for three matches in March 2021 but was not picked.

And now he is hoping to feature on the wall in the Hilton Hotel at SGP, which started in April 2019 and includes every England representative from the men’s seniors to the futsal team who have earned 50 and 100 caps.
Asked what it would mean to reach the half-century, Dier said: “Yes, it would mean a lot. It’s something that when I wasn’t in the squad it was playing on my mind that I was so close to it. That did annoy me.
“I would love to be able to get to that kind of milestone. I’ve seen they’ve got a board up now in the reception of the hotel, of all the people who have made 50 and 100. It’s a dream to be able to reach that.
“I know I don’t seem happy but I’m very happy to be back. I’m very proud of making it back, I just don’t like dramatising it too much.
“I’ve reached my best level in my career, not just this season but last season as well. I think I’m getting better — and I think I can get better.”
Dier, one of the stars of England’s World Cup campaign in Russia in 2018, struggled under Jose Mourinho in the 2020-21 season and was heartbroken to miss out on Euro 2020 last summer.
Yet he is in his element under Conte, who has helped Spurs to be much stronger at the back.
Dier said: “It was my most difficult season when I did miss out on the Euros. I think there were many reasons for the light to be shone the way it was.
“It was not as bad as some people like to make out in terms of my performances. It was good for me, in some ways. I learned a lot from it.
“I don’t want to sound like a teacher’s pet but he (Conte) has done a lot for me. I have learnt so much, different things tactically. He is the godfather of that system.
    Read More on The Sun
“He gave me my belief back a little bit as well.”
On England’s fixtures, he added: “They couldn’t be better, to play Italy away, Germany at home. I’m just very excited. These are the games I want to play.” More

England could face horror Euro 2024 qualifying draw if they fail to beat Italy AND Germany in Nations League

ENGLAND must pull off a Nations League rescue job over the next week to stay in the top tier for next month’s Euro 2024 qualifying draw.Uefa confirmed the 53 remaining nations – Germany qualify as hosts while Russia have been banned – will be placed in two groups of either five or six teams, with the top two qualifying automatically.
Pressure is on Southgate to beat Italy and GermanyCredit: Getty
But the seeding groups will be determined by the final standings in the Nations League, with Gareth Southgate’s side facing relegation after two draws and two defeats in June.
It means the Three Lions probably have to beat both Italy and Germany to get into the top 10 in the standings and stay as first seeds, although the penalty for being a second seed is not likely to be too severe.
So unless England do pull off two huge wins, they could end up in Pot B for the Euro 2024 qualifying draw.
And that may lead to a horror qualifying group potentially featuring Spain, Sweden, Turkey and Northern Ireland.
However, two teams will qualify from each group meaning Harry Kane and co will be confident of progressing to the tournament no matter who they are drawn against.

First the Three Lions take on Euro 2020 champions Italy in Milan on Friday.
England suffered penalty shootout heartbreak against the Italians in the final last summer.
And then on Monday the Germans travel to Wembley for another crucial Nations League clash.
As it stands, Southgate’s men are bottom of League A Group 3, they have no wins and two draws from four games.

According to BBC reporter Alex Howell, the Newcastle defender isn’t currently at St George’s Park with the rest of his Three Lions team-mates.
Boss Gareth Southgate has given him time off for personal reasons.
Though it has been said that the former Tottenham man is expected to be at England’s headquarters in Burton upon Trent later on Tuesday.

Trippier has been ever-present for the Magpies this season having featured in all seven Premier League matches.
And he showed he is still capable of producing moments of magic as shown by his glorious free-kick in the thrilling 3-3 draw with Manchester City.
As well as Trippier, his Newcastle team-mate Nick Pope has also been called up by Southgate following his strong start to the campaign.

How England could line up against Italy with Gareth Southgate facing goalkeeper dilemma after Jordan Pickford injury

GARETH SOUTHGATE is set to pick his penultimate England team before the World Cup when they face Italy in Milan on Friday. The Three Lions will take on the European champions in the Nations League, before hosting Germany on Monday.
How SunSport expects England to line up against Italy
The two matches offer Southgate a final opportunity to look at players before he selects his 26-man squad for Qatar in October.
And there are still a host of questions for the England boss to answer less than two months out from the start of the tournament.
The most pressing one for these upcoming Nations League fixtures is who will replace the injured Jordan Pickford in between the sticks.
Arsenal keeper Aaron Ramsdale and Newcastle shot-stopper Nick Pope are both vying for the spot – with Dean Henderson expected to miss out.
    READ MORE IN FOOTBALL
Then there is the debate as to whether Southgate goes with a back three or back four.
If it is a three then expect Tottenham man Eric Dier to return to the fold after two years out of the national side.
Harry Maguire and John Stones will likely form a trio either side of him, with Chelsea wingbacks Ben Chilwell and Reece James on the flanks.
Alternatively, he could opt to go with a four and try out the likes of Marc Guehi and Fikayo Tomori.

Another way Southgate could choose to line up against Italy
Kyle Walker could then come in as a more defensive right-back compared with James and Trent Alexander-Arnold.
Kieran Trippier is also an option at left-back, especially given the poor form of Luke Shaw.
In midfield, Declan Rice is a certainty.

But the spot alongside him is up for grabs, particularly given Kalvin Phillips has been ruled out and replaced in the squad by Jordan Henderson.
The Liverpool man is an option, but you would imagine Jude Bellingham is the favourite to fill that spot ahead of Henderson and James Ward-Prowse.
Then up front, a 3-4-3 would allow Southgate to play his favoured front three – Raheem Sterling, Harry Kane and Mason Mount.
    Read More on The Sun
But a 4-2-3-1 could mean Mount takes up the No10 position either side of the wide men – any two of Bukayo Saka, Phil Foden, Jack Grealish or Jarrod Bowen.
And there is also a chance Kane may make way for Ivan Toney – who has earned his first England call-up and will be hoping to make a late case for a spot on the plane. More
