GOALKEEPER Unai Simon saved two penalties in a shootout, as Spain finally ended their 11-year trophy drought in the Nations League final. The tense showpiece finished 0-0 after extra time, before Luis de la Fuente’s side were victorious when the tie went to spot-kicks.

Athletic Bilbao keeper Simon became the hero, using his feet to save a penalty by Lovro Majer when the shootout was level at 3-3.
Then, he dived spectacularly full-length to tip Bruno Petkovi’s spot kick around the post.
Up stepped Real Madrid defender Dani Carvajal to convert his penalty with a cheeky Panenka and seal the victory for his country.
Spain last tournament win came at the 2012 European Championship, when they defeated Italy 4-0 at the Olympic Stadium in Kyiv.

But, they made harder work of it tonight.
They struggled to get a shot on target until the 84th minute, and when substitute Ansu Fati finally looked like breaking the stalemate, Ivan Perii was on the goal line to block his effort.
Incredibly, it was Spain’s only goal-bound attempt, compared to Croatia’s five.
In the first period of extra time, Majer broke through and fell in the penalty area under a challenge by Nacho.

Roberto Mancini reveals emotional final meeting with Gianluca Vialli as late Italy and Chelsea icon made incredible plea

HE is the international boss who thought about quitting after a late missed penalty led to World Cup heartbreak. He is worried about the lack of homegrown talent playing in his country’s top division.

And he is seeking more Euros glory to ease the pain of the recent past.
    No, not Gareth Southgate.
Because if you think the England boss has had a rollercoaster few years, it is nothing compared to what Roberto Mancini and Italy have faced.
Southgate led the Three Lions to a first major final in 55 years, only for Mancini to emerge triumphant from their Euro 2020 showdown at  Wembley, thanks to his side’s greater spot-kick composure.
    READ MORE FOOTBALL NEWS
But from such great heights came a great fall.
It was a year ago that North Macedonia stunned football with a   play-off semi-final win which meant Italy would miss a second World Cup in a row.
But it all could have been so different if Jorginho had scored a penalty a few months earlier.
Italy won a  spot-kick in the last minute of their qualifier against Switzerland in November 2021, with the score at 1-1.
    Most read in Football
If Jorginho had netted it, Mancini’s side would have gone into the last round of games top of the group, three points ahead of the Swiss and with a better goal difference.
But just like Harry Kane at a crucial stage of England’s World Cup quarter-final with France, the Arsenal ace blazed his effort over —having had another penalty saved in the away game against Switzerland.
Unlike Kane, Jorginho and Italy had chances to redeem themselves — and blew them. A draw in Northern Ireland sent them into the playoffs as the Swiss thrashed Bulgaria, then came that luckless night against North Macedonia.
Mancini later admitted: “When things don’t go well, it’s clear the responsibility lies with the coach. I  thought about leaving.”
But the former Manchester City boss stayed and guided Italy to the Nations League Finals later that year, winning and drawing against Southgate’s England on the way.
When the teams played out a dull goalless draw at Molineux last June, pressure started to build on the Three Lions boss.
When the same venue hosted a 4-0  thrashing by Hungary three days later, the backlash left Southgate on the verge of announcing he would step down after the World Cup.
But he did not, then quickly ended any speculation about his future following the France defeat by confirming he would stay on until at least 2024.
Southgate and Mancini go in search of redemption in tonight’s Euro 2024 qualifier singing from the same hymn sheet.
The England coach warned the falling number of Englishmen featuring in the Premier League will force future managers to look for players in the Championship.
Mancini, in response, said: “We are worse off than Southgate. I don’t know why there are so few strikers, we are very limited going forward.
“We have three teams in the Champions League quarter-finals. Yet out of them, there are seven or eight Italians at most.  This is the reality.”
For the record, it is seven. Meanwhile, England’s two clubs in the last eight, Manchester City and Chelsea, provide eight players in Southgate’s squad.
And the England party, even without injured Chelsea pair Raheem Sterling and Mason Mount, looks stronger on paper.
Italy will particularly miss Giacomo Raspadori, whose brilliant goal earned Italy victory over the Lions in  September. Napoli’s Raspadori is out with a thigh injury.
Vialli passed away in JanuaryCredit: Getty
But Mancini and Italy have something else spurring them on — the memory of former Azzurri striker Gianluca Vialli.
The most powerful image of the Euro 2020 final was head coach Mancini embracing  Vialli, his ex-Sampdoria and Italy team-mate, after Gianluigi Donnarumma denied Bukayo Saka in the shootout.
The former Chelsea striker had accepted a position with the national team during his first bout of cancer in 2018.
But tears of joy at Wembley in July 2021 became tears of pain in January when Vialli died, aged just 58. Heartbroken Mancini said afterwards he was on a mission assigned to him by his “little brother”.
He said: “I went to see Luca in London in December, I was a little scared. He told me, ‘I’m relaxed, don’t worry’. He was the one trying to raise my spirits.
    Read More on The Sun
“Gianluca told me we must win the World Cup in 2026 and that he’ll be with us. We hope to dedicate a great victory to him soon.”
In Naples tonight, Italy’s first game since Vialli’s death would be a fitting way for Mancini’s  European champions to start that quest. More

Brooks netted his treble by bundling in the first from close range before a strike with both his left and right foot in front of the watching Cherries boss Gary O’Neil at the Vitality Stadium.
Bournemouth’s official twitter account tweeted: “The perfect return for @DRBrooks15.
“The winger netted a hat-trick for the development squad this evening.”
It was the first time Brooks has scored since August 2021 when he found the back of the net against Nottingham Forest.

The 25-year-old has battled back from his Stage 2 Hodgkin lymphoma diagnosis in October 2021.
But the Wales attacker revealed he was ‘cancer free’ last October.
After 529 days, Brooks was in the Bournemouth matchday squad and an unused sub against Liverpool earlier this month.
Then Brooks, who has 21 Welsh caps, came off for the final 11 minutes of the Cherries’ 3-0 Prem defeat at Villa Park on Saturday.

But Southgate reckons 25-year-old Tomori’s good display in the 0-0 Champions League draw at Tottenham led some people to get carried away.
The England manager said: “There are a lot of players playing at a very similar level. We’re looking at a lot of data on that as well.
“Sometimes players making fewer key errors leading to goals in that position can be important.
“Fik had a good game at Tottenham the other day, which was in England and so had more spotlight.

“But there have been quite a few errors this season. The great thing is he is playing at a big club. There are high expectations every time.
“He’s in a group that are close but at the moment we have one or two just ahead of him.”
They include Harry Maguire — despite his lack of recent game time at Manchester United.
World Cup winners Raphael Varane and Lisandro Martinez are Erik ten Hag’s preferred pair.

Southgate added: “We are where we were ahead of the World Cup. It’s not a perfect scenario.

Wales consider shock reunion with recently departed England backroom staff member

WALES are weighing up a return for psychologist Ian Mitchell.SunSport revealed on Wednesday that Mitchell has left his post as the Football Association’s head of performance and psychology.
Ian Mitchell (left) has had successful spells with both Wales and England under Chris Coleman and Gareth Southgate
Dragons boss Robert Page stated earlier this year that he was keen to bring a psychologist on board to provide an extra edge in the post-Gareth Bale era.
Wales have not had one since Mitchell left for the FA in February 2018 after becoming a key figure in Chris Coleman’s set-up which included the memorable run to the Euro 2016 semi-finals.
Highly-rated Mitchell was popular among Football Association of Wales staff and he will not be short of offers following his departure from Gareth Southgate’s backroom staff.
Wales are now on red alert after the development that his services have become available.

Page said in January: “I want to bring in a full-time psychologist. Every other association has got one. We haven’t.
“We need to keep evolving, progressing and improving. That’s certainly an area we need.
