Kyle Walker shines as Eric Dier has evening to forget during Three Lions’ 2-1 Nations League win over Belgium at Wembley

ENGLAND beat Belgium 2-1 at Wembley to go top of Nations League Group two.
Marcus Rashford’s first-half penalty and Mason Mount’s deflected effort after the break saw the Three Lions come from behind after Romelu Lukaku’s 15th minute spot-kick put the visitors ahead.

Eric Dier’s clumsy foul on Lukaku gave the Inter striker the chance to step up and slot home which he duly did and it set the tone for the Tottenham’s man evening.
Kyle Walker on the right side of the three centre-backs was the other end of the scale with repeated excellent challenges to quell the Belgians’ dangerous attackers.
And here SunSport’s William Pugh rates the individual performances of Gareth Southgate’s men.
    JORDAN PICKFORD – 5
Sent the wrong way from the spot by Lukaku for Belgium’s opener.

Not called on much but shut down Yannick Carrasco well when the midfielder was through on goal with 20 minutes to go.
    Couple of trademark aerial flaps.

    TRENT ALEXANDER-ARNOLD – 5 (replaced by James – 78 mins)
Some good deliveries but allowed Belgium a fair bit of joy down his flank.
Often relied on excellent Walker behind him to bail him out.

Understandably hauled off by Southgate with 12 minutes to go as England tried to shore up the defensive frailty down his side and hold on to the win.
    KYLE WALKER – 8
Classy performance slotting in as the right centre-back alongside Dier and Harry Maguire.
Brilliant pace and positional awareness saw him on hand to shut out Belgium on several occasions.

    ERIC DIER – 4
Brainless, clumsy foul on Lukaku to give away penalty after 15 minutes which gave Belgium the lead.
Looked jittery from then on and Conor Coady should be disappointed if he is not given a chance in Dier’s place next time out.
    HARRY MAGUIRE – 6
    Unremarkable.
But just the right kind of unremarkable. Hassle-free against his imposing former team-mate Lukaku.
    KIERAN TRIPPIER – 7
Another professional showing on his un-favoured left side of the defence.
Put in a far better showing than Alexander-Arnold on the opposite flank.
JORDAN HENDERSON – 7 (replaced by Phillips – 65 mins)
Clever movement to entice Thomas Meunier into the foul that won England their first-half penalty.
Good showing before he was replaced for fitness reasons after England took the lead for the first time.

    10

Jordan Henderson won the penalty that Rashford scored before half-timeCredit: News Group Newspapers Ltd
    DECLAN RICE – 7
Booked after half-hour for a firm challenge through the back of Axel Witsel.
Handled Kevin De Bruyne efficiently alongside Henderson.
A marauding run late on saw him put one on a plate for Rashford but the United man blazed over from 13 yards.

MASON MOUNT – 5 (replaced by Sancho – 89 mins)
Sloppy first-half. Did nothing to distinguish calls for Jack Grealish to start instead of him.
Touch was poor, looked out of sorts and like he was not enjoying his wide-right role too much.
UNTIL… He switched to the left flank, picked up a cleared cross on the edge of the box and looped one into the far right corner via an enormous deflection off Toby Alderweireld’s shin to put England 2-1 up on 65 minutes.

Mount celebrated his fortunate goal with best mate Declan RiceCredit: News Group Newspapers Ltd
    MARCUS RASHFORD – 7
Topped off an excellent week off the pitch with a solid showing on it.
Bright first half and dispatched penalty with aplomb to draw England level after half an hour.
Gave Belgium headaches throughout but should have wrapped up the win late on when he fired over after Rice’s superb through-ball.

    DOMINIC CALVERT-LEWIN – 6 (replaced by Kane – 65 mins)
Solid hold up play in place of Harry Kane.
Limited to half chances throughout and it just wouldn’t fall for him.
Replaced by Kane as England went 2-1 up.

    Subs
    Kalvin Phillips – 6
Busy when he came on as he attempted to quell Belgium’s comeback attempt.
    Harry Kane – 5
Missed a sitter with ten minutes to go.
Glanced a free header wide from seven yards when he should have buried the excellently delivered corner.
    Reece James – 6
Shored things up at right-back after Alexander-Arnold had looked vulnerable going backwards.
    Jadon Sancho – 5
Not enough time to make an impact.

Watch Sergio Ramos pull off incredible backheel tackle as Spain edge to Nations League win over Switzerland

SERGIO RAMOS pulled off an unbelievably risky backheel tackle in Spain’s 1-0 Nations League win over Switzerland.
The experienced centre-back was defending in a one-on-one scenario against FC Augsburg’s Ruben Vargas on the right hand-side of the penalty area.

As Vargas went to knock the ball past Ramos, the Spaniard used his trailing leg to backheel the ball away from danger.
Ramos’ unbelievable tackle most certainly stopped a shot on David de Gea’s goal, playing a vital role in Spain keeping a clean sheet.
De Gea had a busy start to the evening as he was forced into a smart save by Loris Benito, palming away the left-backs shot at the near post.
The hosts shook off the opening ten minute jitters by getting an early goal.

Switzerland keeper Yann Sommer had an absolute nightmare after his short pass was intercepted by Mikel Merino, who set up Oyarzabal for an easy finish.
Sommer would go on to somewhat make up for his earlier mistake denying Manchester City new boy Ferran Torres, turning away the wingers header.
Goalscorer Oyarzabal would go on to miss a glorious opportunity to put his side two goals ahead.

    1

Just when you think you have Sergio Ramos beaten, he pulls something incredible out of the bag

Sommer palmed the ball into Oyarzabal’s path, but the forward was unable to react quick enough to convert at the back post.

Heroics at both ends of the pitch helped keep Spain top of their Nations League group, winning two and drawing just once against Germany.

How England could line up for Nations League clash with Belgium, with Harry Kane OUT and Jordan Henderson returning

GARETH SOUTHGATE was expected to ring the changes and play his strongest XI against world No1 ranked Belgium – until Harry Kane was ruled out through injury.
The Three Lions boss fielded an experimental XI for Thursday’s friendly win over Wales.

    2

How England could line-up vs Belgium with Kane out injured

But big guns including Harry Kane and Jordan Henderson were expected to return against Roberto Martinez’s side on Sunday evening.
However, Tottenham star Kane was struck down by a training injury and is now set to miss the huge game.
That could give in-form Dominic Calvert-Lewin the chance to retain his place in the starting XI – having scored on his debut against Wales.
Despite calls for Nick Pope to retain his place in goal given Jordan Pickford’s shaky Everton form, Southgate is expected to stay loyal to the Toffees’ stopper and reinstate him.

The five-man defence worked well against Wales and the same system will likely be utilised against Belgium’s dangerous attack which includes Kevin De Bruyne and Romelu Lukaku.
Trent Alexander-Arnold will likely start on the right with Kieran Trippier on the opposite flank.
Harry Maguire should be recalled at centre-back alongside Joe Gomez – with some reports suggesting Kyle Walker could be a shock starter at centre-back.
After impressing with a goal and a clean sheet on Thursday, Wolves’ Conor Coady could also slot into the middle of the three.

    2

Another way Gareth Southgate could set-up his troops against Belgium

If Southgate does not hand Coady his first competitive Three Lions start, Tottenham’s Eric Dier is expected to play.
Jordan Henderson and Declan Rice are shoe-ins in England’s best starting XI and Southgate decision to opt for 5-2-3 or 4-3-3 will dictate whether they play alone or with Dier.
The front-three should have picked itself with Jadon Sancho back in contention after breaking coronavirus rules with Ben Chilwell and Tammy Abraham.
Borussia Dortmund’s star winger should have started wide-right of Kane – but Calvert-Lewin should now be his partner in attack.
New MBE Marcus Rashford is expected to take the left-wing slot in place of Thursday’s man-of-the-match Jack Grealish.
The Aston Villa man could be a surprise inclusion after he shone against Wales but Southgate is expected to stay loyal to Manchester United’s social superstar Rashford.
Grealish could alternatively slot into a deeper role in the heart of midfield having recently revealed he would play in any role just to pull on the Three Lions shirt.

ENGLAND face arguably their biggest test since the World Cup as they host Belgium in the Uefa Nations League.

But the visiting Red Devils come into this one top of this Nations League group and having been far more impressive than their hosts in the competition so far.
In their first two matches, England won 1-0 in Iceland before drawing 0-0 in Denmark, while Belgium have beaten the same opposition 5-1 and 2-0 respectively.

    Team news
Gareth Southgate is likely to restore big guns such as Harry Kane, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Marcus Rashford and Eric Dier to the starting line-up after making several changes against Wales.
But it remains to be seen whether trio Ben Chilwell, Jadon Sancho and Tammy Abraham will be trusted so soon after attending a party which breached the rule of six – and therefore linking up with the squad late.

For Belgium, there are question marks over the fitness of Eden Hazard, who has struggled for playing time with an ankle injury at Real Madrid this season.
