Defore, 41, took to social media to tease a third spell at the Stadium of Light – having last played for Sunderland in March 2022.
The club are in desperate need of a new boss as the Black Cats currently sit ninth in the Championship with six defeats in their last 12 matches.
This means the team faces going into Saturday’s clash against promotion rivals West Brom without a manager.
Unless Sunderland’s board can make a quick turnaround and appoint Mowbray’s replacement.

The list of contenders includes Paul Heckingbottom who was recently sacked by Sheffield United, Plynouth’s Steven Schumacher and John Eustace who remains out of work since his Birmingham sacking.
But fans would not have predicted for Defoe’s name to end up in the mix.
The ex-striker tweeted an amusing photo of him in a suit wearing a red and white tie captioned “Old pic, but ready for the job” and tagged Sunderland’s official X profile.
Sunderland are set to take on Newcastle in the third round FA Cup in what will be the first Tyne-Wear derby in nearly eight years.

Defoe made 100 appearances across two spells for Sunderland in both the Premier League and League One.
And since his retirement in 2022, he has had limited senior managerial experience.
During his time at Rangers from 2020-22  following the departure of Steven Gerrard to Aston Villa, Defoe was named as part of a four-man caretaker team.
He has since returned to his old club Tottenham as a club ambassador and academy coach.
The East London-born star now aims to inspire more black coaches and managers in the game. More

Jose Mourinho stuns Italian media with bizarre protest as he refuses to speak in Italian in Roma press conference

JOSE MOURINHO left Italian media baffled following Roma’s 2-1 victory over Sassuolo yesterday. The former Spurs manager launched his own one-man protest at his perceived ill-treatment from the media by refusing to speak Italian after the game.
Mourinho was full of mind games this weekCredit: Getty
Despite speaking the language fluently, Mourinho answered questions through an interpreter and responded in Portuguese.
As reported by Football Italia, Mourinho opened his post-match press conference by saying: “I want to thank the club and director Tiago Pinto, who over the last 24 hours gave me the support and therefore the emotional stability that allows me to do my work.
“They showed faith in me. This was a very important, hard-fought and deserved victory, because even when we were a goal down, Roma were still the best team on the pitch.
“I am very happy with the players and all our fans. I want to dedicate this to my fantastic assistant manager, Salvatore Foti, who was not here today but worked very hard to help us achieve the victory.”

Roma trailed in the game for nearly an hour before goals from Paulo Dybala and Rasmus Kristensen secured victory for the Giallorossi.
Ahead of the game, Mourinho had employed mind games against Sassuolo, the referee and VAR.
Just 24 hours before the match he said: “To be honest, I will say that I am worried about the referee. We had this official three times and I don’t think he has the emotional stability to work at this level.
“I am not relaxed about the referee or the VAR, who we were also often unlucky with.

“[And] I am worried about Berardi, who is a fantastic player, I love him, but he needs to show more respect for his opponents. He mocks other players and gets them booked, so I love and hate him. I don’t like that kind of behaviour on the field and would really dislike seeing that from one of my players.”
Mourinho appeared to suggest his choice of phrase had been used against him when he again referenced “emotional stability” after the game.
He said: “The reason I am speaking Portuguese is that my Italian is not sufficiently polished to express certain concepts. When I talked about emotional stability, I was referring to a quality that in life and in football is necessary to perform at the highest level.”
The dark arts continued into added time at the Mapei stadium, with a member of Mourinho’s coaching staff sent off for refusing to return the match ball to Sassuolo’s players when they attempted to take a quick throw.
On the incident, Mourinho said: “As for the situation that caused some irritation in the Sassuolo staff and fans when we did not give the ball back quickly, I went over to my colleague and simply said that to receive fair play, it is necessary to first give it and there is a player in the Sassuolo squad who is lacking in that area.”
That comment appeared to be another crack at Berradi.
The victory away at Sassuolo was Mourinho’s first win at the Mapei stadium as Roma manager and has his side now sitting in the top four.
Roma’s next game takes place at the Stadio Olimpico against Fiorentina. More

Haaland and his City team-mates were furious with the decision and protested the call.

Chris Eubank Jr issues chilling warning to Conor Benn as Eddie Hearn set to finalise grudge match ‘this week’

CHRIS EUBANK JR has sent a chilling warning Conor Benn’s way as their historic showdown edges closer to being re-booked.The duo were due to throw down in an iconic family grudge match last October before a pair of failed drug tests for Benn scuppered the mouthwatering showdown.

Negotiations over the Battle of Britain resumed after Benn made a short-notice and successful return to the ring against Rodolfo Orzoco in September.
SunSport understands talks are close to bearing fruit, with a spring punch-up on the brink of being finalised.
And after getting wind of some social media trash talk from Benn – the son of British boxing great Nigel Benn – Eubank Jr issued the welterweight contender a blunt warning.
He wrote on X (formerly Twitter): “DEAD MAN WALKING.”
    READ MORE IN BOXING
The jibe from Eubank Jr – the son of former WBO super-middleweight champion Chris Eubank Sr – was in response to Benn vowing to become only the second man to stop Next Gen.
He wrote: “I can’t wait to punch you in the head @ChrisEubankJr.”
The mouthwatering domestic dust-up between Eubank Jr and Benn fell by the wayside after the latter tested positive for the banned fertility drug clomiphene – which can elevate testosterone levels in men.
Benn was cleared of intentionally ingesting the prohibited substance by the National Anti-Doping Panel but both UK Anti-Doping and the British Boxing Board of Control appealed the decision.

The appeal is still ongoing and the date of when the outcome will be revealed is still unknown.
Benn is, technically, not prohibited from boxing in the UK – despite ripping up his BBBOFC license shortly after the doping saga began.
That has prompted promoter Eddie Hearn to press on with plans to re-book his clash with Eubank Jr.
February 3 is the working date for the fight, which The Daily Mail claims will take place at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
And the undefeated Benn appeared to confirm that is indeed the date for the biggest fight of his career in his ongoing social media spat with Eubank Jr.
In response to Eubank Jr’s “dead man” tweet, The Destroyer wrote: “I’ll remind you of this when you are being scraped up off the f***ing canvas.

Uefa recommended handball rule change that would have stopped Newcastle heartache against PSG

NEWCASTLE felt hard done by after conceding a late penalty against Paris Saint-Germain. The Magpies were leading going into the final minute before the ball struck the arm of Tino Livramento in the penalty area.

Referee Szymon Marciniak initially waved away PSG appeals before VAR overturned the call, with Kylian Mbappe duly scoring an equaliser from 12 yards.
However, replays showed that the ball had come off his chest first.
Under Uefa rules, Livramento was deemed to have made his body unnaturally bigger with his arm.
But in a series of recommendations for the 2023/24 season, Uefa’s Football Board – an independent advisory group – had in April proposed a change that would have saved Newcastle’s skin in the final minutes.
    READ MORE IN FOOTBALL
The statement on the organisation’s website, said: “With regard to the Laws of the Game, which stipulate that not every touch of a player’s hand/arm with the ball is an offence, the Board issued the following recommendations for next season for better compliance of the Laws with the nature of the game:

In their guidelines for the next season, the Board recommends that UEFA should clarify that no handball offence should be called on a player if the ball is previously deflected from his own body and, in particular, when the ball does not go towards the goal.
On the same notice, the Board recommends that not every handball should automatically lead to a caution after every shot at goal, as anticipated by current guidelines.
The Board encourages the referees to be more decisive in cautioning players who display unsporting behaviour, especially when attempting to deceive the referee by feigning injury or pretending to have been fouled.
UEFA should launch an initiative towards the IFAB for the amendment of Law 12, which foresees that a player should be sent off for denying the opposing team a goal or an obvious goal-scoring opportunity by a handball offence. The Board feels players should be sent off only if they deliberately and intentionally touch the ball with their hand/arm. In case of other handball offences, the players should only be cautioned.”

Keith Hackett, former general manager of the Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL), the English referees’ body, told the Daily Telegraph that this recommendation was not implemented by Uefa for its own competitions.
The Premier League, meanwhile, operates under more lenient handball rules.

TNT Sports commentator Ally McCoist suggested Eddie Howe’s side had been “robbed” by the decision.
He said: “That is a shambles! Honestly, that’s not on. It hits his chest, goes off his left elbow. If that’s a penalty, we may as well give the game up!

“It’s never a penalty, we’ve been singing his praises all night. If he’s the best ref in the business, how has he given that?! There is no way that that penalty kick should be given.
“That’s not on, I feel for Eddie Howe and those players, I genuinely do. It’s bordering on robbery, it really is.”
Fellow pundit Jermaine Jenas echoed this sentiment while Toon legend Alan Shearer also shared an X-rated post on social media with his own thoughts on the matter.
Jenas added: “I think that’s a shocker from the referee. He had such a good game and to give that right at the end, he’s caved to be honest with you.
“I think the players from Paris Saint-Germain put so much pressure on him throughout the match, he’d performed so well, but for that to happen in that moment like that, it doesn’t feel right.
“It’ll be a tough one to swallow for the players but Eddie Howe should be so proud of his team.
“They’re down to their bare bones, they’ve worked their socks off and they should’ve left Paris with all three points.”
Meanwhile, Shearer posted on X, formerly known as Twitter: “Do me a f***ing favour man. What a load of s***.”
Alexander Isak had put the Magpies ahead in the opening stages by taking advantage of a spilt save from Gianluigi Donnarumma.
However, Newcastle were soon penned back into their own half and defended resolutely before seeing their hard work undone by Kylian Mbappe’s 98th-minute spot kick.
A 3-1 win for Borussia Dortmund at AC Milan means it is a one-game shootout for one of three teams to progress into the knockout stages of the Champions League.
PSG sit on seven points, while Newcastle and Milan both sit on five.
