      Where is Gary Lineker and why isn’t he on Match of the Day?

      GARY Lineker has been the backbone of the Match of the Day presenting team for almost a quarter of a century.But the former Leicester, Spurs and Barcelona striker wont be appearing on the show on Saturday February 10 — here we take a look at why.

      Where is Gary Lineker and why isn’t he on Match of the Day?
      Gary Lineker has been forced to pull out of presenting Match of the Day on Saturday February 10, 2024.
      He usually hosts the football highlights show every Saturday night.
      Gary took to X, formerly Twitter, on the afternoon of the show he’s missing to break the news to fans.
      In typical style, he joked: “Some good news for some: I’ve been silenced….with a rotten cold that seems to be lasting forever.

      “Hate missing hosting @BBCMOTD but I’ll be watching.”
      So instead of being in the studio, he’ll be convalescing at home.
      Fans were quick to wish the former striker well, with one person tweeting: “Get well soon Gary, we need you in strong voice!”
      Another commented: “Get well soon Gary!”

      While a Newcastle fan joked: “Get well soon Gary. And you’re doing the right thing. We don’t want Wor Al catching it 🖤🤍.”
      Gary is regularly joined on the show by pundits including Alan Shearer, Ian Wright and Micah Richards.
      MOTD and BBC Sport struck a new four-year agreement with the Premier League in December 2023, meaning the TV programme will continue to show Premier League highlights until 2029.
      Gary is also believed to be set to agree a huge contract extension with the BBC.
      Who has replaced Gary Lineker?
      Mark Chapman will step in to replace Gary while he is ill.
      The Manchester United fan has been a regular on Final Score and Match of the Day 2.
      So although Chappers is BBC Sport’s chief rugby league presenter, he also knows a thing or two about the beautiful game.
      When was Gary Lineker last missing from Match of the Day? 
      The BBC dramatically suspended Gary from Match of the Day in 2023, leading to the programme being broadcast without presenters, pundits or the usual commentary team over the weekend of March 11/12.
      This came after the BBC ruled that a tweet he posted about former Home Secretary Suella Braverman broke impartiality rules.
      Gary took to Twitter to hit out at the Illegal Migration Bill, which bans migrants who arrive on small boats from ever settling in Britain.
      His suspension sparked chaos as scores of his co-hosts launched a mutiny.
      A BBC spokesperson said: “Some of our pundits have said that they don’t wish to appear on the programme while we seek to resolve the situation with Gary.
      “We understand their position and we have decided that the programme will focus on match action without studio presentation or punditry.”
      The show’s commentary also stood down, with commentators usually heard on football broadcasts outside of the UK replacing them.
      Gary and the team returned MOTD to present highlights of the FA Cup quarter-finals on March 18, 2023.
      More recently Gary missed the footy highlights and analysis programme on April 1, 2023.

      Taking to X, formerly known as Twitter, earlier this week, she said: “I want to go to the Afcon final but I don’t have the vaccinations ☹️.
      “Is there anyway around it? Apparently takes 10 days before you’re allowed to travel.”
      According to the Government website, a yellow fever certificate is required to travel to the Ivory Coast due to the risk of transmission in the country.
      This plea came after a post where Astrid claimed she was part Nigerian.

      A follow-up picture showed the Chelsea supporter wearing a Nigerian football team top and holding a Nigeria flag alongside a piece of paper apparently from genealogy company Ancestry.
      The paper in question showed a breakdown of Astrid’s ethnicity in regions.
      It showed her to be 39 per cent English, 36 per cent Welsh, 19 per cent Nigerian and three per cent German.
      She also had less than a one per cent link to Italy, Spain, Belgium and highlighted previous African Caribbean migration from her family tree.

      Astrid more than likely won’t be in attendance for Sunday’s final at the Alassane Ouattara Stadium in Abidjan.
      The match kicks off at 8pm UK time and is being shown on a number of UK broadcasters, including Sky Sports Premier League, Sky Sports Football and BBC Three in the UK.

      Lescott followed up the tweet defending himself as he claimed that the post happened when his phone was in his pocket.

      De La Hoya’s post spread like wildfire on Instagram and on X, much to the delight of his girlfriend Holly Sonders – the founder of the Topless Sports League.
      The former golfer, sports broadcaster and model commented: “100k views on this in 4 minutes? I think our show will do pretty well.”
      De La Hoya retired from boxing in 2008 after a brutal beatdown at the hands of fellow great Manny Pacquiao.
      But he came out of retirement in 2020 to throw down with former UFC light-heavyweight champion Vitor Belfort.
      A bout of Covid, however, scuppered the fight as De La Hoya – who admitted to being hit too many times in sparring – ended up being hospitalised.
      During an appearance on The MMA Hour, he said: “I’m done. Like I said, everything happens for a reason.
      “And I’m actually glad I didn’t come back.

      Kurt Hamrin dead: World Cup legend who took on Pele and still holds Serie A goalscoring record passes away

      SWEDISH football legend Kurt Hamrin has died aged 89.The former Sweden international’s old club Fiorentina announced his passing in a statement offering their condolences on their official website on Sunday morning.

      It read: “President Rocco Commisso, his family, the Fiorentina board and everyone associated with the club share the pain of Kurt Hamrim’s family and the entire footballing world for his passing.
      “Hamrin was and always will be a legend for all football fans and especially for Fiorentina fans.
      “He still holds the record for goals in the purple shirt along with [Gabriel] Batistuta.
      “With the lily on his chest, he won a Cup Winners’ Cup and two Italian Cups and has inextricably linked his life to the city of Florence.”

      Another of Hamrin’s former clubs, Italian champions Juventus, issued their own statement after learning of the winger’s passing.
      It read: “Kurt Hamrin, one of the highest-scoring foreigners who played in Italy, has left us at the age of 89.
      “It was Juventus who brought the Swede, born in Stockholm on 19 November 1934, to Serie A.
      “He spent only one season in Turin, which was very important for his career.

      “Afterwards, there were experiences in Padova, in Fiorentina (where he was Paolo Rossi’s idol as a child fan, declaring how much his way of playing influenced him), in Milan and in Napoli.”
      The cause of Hamrin’s passing is currently unknown.
      Hamrin was, up until his death, the last surviving player from the 1958 World Cup final between Sweden and Brazil.
      His death came a month after Brazil’s last survivor of the match Mario Zagallo passed away.
      Hamrin began his professional career with AIK in 1952 before he joined Juve in 1957.
      He would spend the bulk of his career in Italy, where he also had stints with AC Milan, Napoli and Padova.
      The majority of the wideman’s career, however, was spent in Florence with Fiorentina, whom he scored 150 goals for in 269 appearances.
      Hamrin bagged 190 Serie A goals during his time in Italy, a haul which sees him ninth above the likes of Alessandro Del Piero and Zlatan Ibrahimovic in Serie A’s all-time leading goalscorers list.
      Hamrin made a total of 32 appearances for Sweden between 1953 and 1965, scoring 17 goals for his country.

      Three of those strikes came in the 1958 World Cup, where they played a Pele-inspired Brazil in the final.
      Pele bagged a brace, as did the recently-deceased Zagallo, as the Samba Boys ran out 5-2 winners.
