BBC bosses ‘are talking to Gary Lineker’ after Match of the Day host slammed Rwanda plan in ANOTHER Twitter storm

BBC bosses are said to be talking to Gary Lineker after the Match of the Day host was slammed for blasting the Government’s Rwanda plan. The TV host, 63, found himself at the centre of yet another Twitter storm after urging ministers to scrap their Rwanda scheme and come up with a “fair new plan for refugees”.

The TV pundit called out the government and Grant Shapps for the Rwanda schemeCredit: PA
In a letter which is campaigning for change, Together With Refugees branded Britain’s refugee system “ever-more uncaring, chaotic and costly”, and said asylum policies are not working.
And Lineker landed himself in hot water after co-signing a letter with other celebs, calling for the scheme to be thrown out.
Now, BBC bosses are “talking to Lineker” about his posts, the Times reports.
The former England star turned pundit said about the letter: “We need a new system that reflects the will of the British people who have opened their homes, donated and volunteered in their local communities.

“That’s why I’m backing this new campaign, because fair really can begin here.”
The Beeb are now said to be discussing whether their updated social media guidelines, which came into play in September, are tight enough after Lineker is accused of ridiculing cabinet minister Grant Shapps and Conservative backbenchers.
Talks between bosses and Lineker about his tweets are reportedly set to take place.
A BBC spokesman said: “We aren’t going to comment on individuals or indeed individual tweets.
    Most read in Football
“While the guidance does allow people to talk about issues that matter to them, it is also clear that individuals should be civil and not call into question anyone’s character.
“We discuss issues that arise with presenters as necessary.”
Lineker previously sparked an impartiality row in March after saying the Government rhetoric on immigration was similar to that of 1930s’ Germany.
But after a review, BBC bosses decided to allow its top stars to share their own views on social media and only ruled they should stop short of political campaigning.
Grant Shapps said on Monday morning that Lineker should stick to presenting football.
When asked if the Match of the Day host should continue expressing political views, Defence Secretary Mr Shapps told Times Radio: “He’s been through all of this before.
“The BBC have told him he shouldn’t do this type of thing but still it continues.
“The point I would make to Mr Lineker is: what is right or moral about having people trafficked dangerously across the English Channel, losing their lives at sea, illegally entering the country?
“That is not a civilised, morally correct thing to do.”
He added: “I just fundamentally disagree with him. What happens to him next is up to the BBC.
“As far as I see it, they have issued previous warnings to him, so it’ll be interesting to see what they do and say at this point.
“I know millions of people watch him for his football commentary and TV presenting, I would have thought it’s better to stick with that.”
Tory deputy chairman Lee Anderson told the Daily Mail: “For once in his life, Gary’s absolutely right – we do need a system that reflects the will of the British people. What the people want is to stop the boats and to tell overpaid crisp salesmen to put a sock in it.
“Alongside cracking down on illegal migration, we need another robust system which keeps Lineker as far away from the public as possible, to give us all a rest from his Left-wing, out-of-touch nonsense.”
The Beeb row comes as the Prime Minister is trying to convince his own backbenchers to support his Rwanda Bill, with both the right of the party and the One Nation faction set to announce whether they support it later on today.
    Read more on The Sun
The Bill seeks to declare Rwanda a safe country and also empowers ministers to ignore parts of the Human Rights Act.
Mr Shapps told Sky News Home Office modelling suggests that of the current cases which are challenged successfully, “99.5% of them would not be challenged once this is in place”. More

I’m an Arsenal Invincible who’s launched social media platform to end abuse – I signed up Harry Maguire as an ambassador

ARSENAL Invincible Gilberto Silva is on a crusade to ensure footballers and fans are free from cyber abuse. The Gunners legend and Brazilian World Cup winner revealed how he was too scared to leave his house after becoming the victim of atrocious hatred and vile threats.

He also suffered racial abuse during his time at Arsenal and at Greek club Panathinaikos and claims online hatred is affecting the performances of current Premier League players.
Gilberto’s personal nightmare inspired him to launch AI-powered anti-hate social media platform Striver.
And he has already recruited Manchester United and England star Harry Maguire – himself targeted by sick keyboard yobs and Three Lions boo-boys.
Gilberto became a victim of sick taunts in his very first season at Arsenal.
    Read more football news
The Gunners’ black stars were racially abused during their 4-0 Champions League triumph at Dutch club PSV Eindhoven in September, 2002.
He explained: “Somebody in the crowd was making monkey noises at us.  Thierry Henry was very upset at half-time.
“I just tried  to focus on the game.
“It’s ridiculous we are still having to tackle racism  nowadays.”
    Most read in Football
Gilberto also suffered sick abuse after he he took Atletico Mineiro to court over a medical dispute following his final injury-hit season with the Brazilian club.
He revealed: “I had an issue with the club over my knee injury. I spoke to the president, but the club didn’t help me at all and I had to take care of myself.
“In the end I decided to retire, but I wanted to play another season.“I had no happiness in going to court but, in the end, I had to.”
However, it sparked a frenzied backlash on social media.
Gilberto, now 47, added: “The fans became so offended by that and  smashed me.
“Mentally, it affected me very much, all the negativity, the trauma and it was very tough to deal with. I was forced to shut down all my social media.
“The club is in Belo Horizonte near my home and, honestly, I was even afraid to go out on the streets.
“Eventually some fans understood my position and said: ‘We respect your history with us.’
“But it took time for me to be confident enough to go on social media again.”
That was despite being a legend in his homeland after a glittering career.
The midfielder won a Premier League title at Arsenal – when Arsene Wenger’s team went the entire 2003-04 season unbeaten – and two FA Cups.

He also won the Greek Superliga and Cup with Panathinaikos, the Copa Libertadores and two Campeonato Mineiros with Atlético Mineiro and the 2002 World Cup with Brazil.
Now, Gilberto believes footballers are suffering more abuse than ever.
A study last year by communications regulator Ofcom revealed more than 300 abusive message are sent to Prem players EVERY day, while Manchester United stars Marcus Rashford and Maguire featured prominently in the list of the 10 most abused footballers.
Maguire has now become a Striver ambassador and Gilberto also wants to offer advice to Arsenal’s three Brazilian Gabriels – Jesus, Martinelli and Maghalaes.
Gilberto continued: “We have seen a lot of players who have been target for racists, for example Brazilians Vinicius Jr and Rodrygo at Real Madrid.
“We are all living in the same world. I don’t need to disrespect anybody, either in a stadium or on the streets. But some cowards on social media feel they are free to say anything they want. We have to stop it.
“I mentioned these issues the other day with Martinelli and I want to sit down with  the other Arsenal boys.
“Step by step we will talk to the players when they have an issue and support them, because at some point people feel afraid.
“Some are frightened to post anything on social media if their team has lost for fear fans will go mad at them.
“Others are leaving social media for the same reason. It’s crazy because it’s their voice, their channel to communicate with fans.”
Roberto Carlos, Gilberto’s Brazil teammate, is also involved in the launchCredit: AP:Associated Press
Gilberto’s Striver platform – co-founded with businessman and “Steyning Town’s most valuable player 1988” Tim Chase – has been designed to give footballers – male and female – a safe space to communicate with their fans.
Any abuse is removed BEFORE comments are posted.
Fellow Arsenal Invincible Sol Campbell has joined Maguire is signing up to the Striver app, which also boasts Brazilian legend Roberto Carlos as a shareholder.
Gilberto said: “We have created a safe environment where they can  interact with  fans without being abused by anybody.”
Chase insists other big names will be joining – from the men’s and women’s game – over the next six months.
Gilberto added: “Last season I was working with Maguire’s United team-mate Fred, so I was able to see the abuse Harry suffered.
“I have seen a lot of the tough situations he has faced, but he has a very strong character because it’s not so easy to face this and then perform at your best in games.
Harry Maguire has been made an ambassador for StriverCredit: AP
“He hasn’t let the abuse stop him from doing what he loves, but people forget  players are human and just want to do well for their club.
    Read more on The Sun
“However, it’s really tough for them when their families, their kids, have to listen to  abusive comments.
“If we want things to change we have to start that change ourselves. Maybe I’m a dreamer, but why not?” More

The DJ has now promised not to play the song again in the lead up to Christmas.
He told BBC Radio Northampton: “I can take on the chin with my home fans and Portsmouth, but I don’t think I’ll be playing it again.
“I think it’s a shame people in professions like mine can’t play Wham! until [late] December, but it’s a game and we all have to jump on board.”

Barton said women commentating on men’s football was the same as him “talking about knitting or netball” – and called those who disagreed with him “eunuchs” and “fart parcels”.
He then defended his comments on Piers Morgan Uncensored on TalkTV last night- and said England and Arsenal footballer Alex Scott is not qualified enough to speak on men’s football.
Last night Scott spoke out on Twitter while sharing an article which sees her speak about her charity work.
She wrote: “Only thing I want to give oxygen to today on this platform & raise my voice to right now is this article below and how I’m so honoured to have spent the day yesterday with Refuge Charity who continue to do such incredible vital work for women & children.”

It comes after she laughed off Barton’s comments in an Instagram story.
During her footy career Scott won eight league titles, three WSL Cups and seven FA Cups.
Scott also won the Champions League once, and two Community Shields.
But last night when quizzed about her commentating Barton said: “She hasn’t played in it”.

“One is 200 years old and one is about 40 years old… it’s the same rules but football is about a lot more than rules… The games are at two different speeds,” he said in his rant.
Barton said it was the same as him commentating on Formula One just because he can drive a car.
He went on to say that great commentators would be overlooked if we were bowing down to tokenism.
The controversial star’s comments have received a huge backlash after the former Bristol Rovers boss said he does not think women pundits should be allowed to comment on the men’s game.
Barton tweeted: “Women shouldn’t be talking with any kind of authority in the men’s game. Come on. Let’s be serious.
“It’s a completely different game. If you don’t accept that. We will always see things differently.
“The women’s game is thriving. Fantastic to see.
“I cannot take a thing they say serious in the men’s arena.”
TNT Sports presenter Laura Woods slammed Barton’s comments in a Twitter post.
She said: “Usually avoid these conversations as I don’t like adding more oxygen.
“But throwing young vloggers to the wolves is wrong.
“I started my career vlogging and I’ve always got on with Joey. He also sent me a lovely good luck message for TNT in June.
“Does that make him a eunuch too?

“Joey’s entitled to his opinion. If he feels that strongly about women in the men’s game he could ask for a private conversation with the broadcasters & state his case.

Barton, 41, tonight defended his comments on Piers Morgan Uncensored on TalkTV.

“I’ve been watching hours and hours of football. I worked behind the scenes at Sky for 10 years before I was even given a shot on camera, watching my male colleagues who maybe weren’t as good as I was, getting chances I was never given.
“I don’t really understand what we need to know, how long we need to work behind the scenes before we are allowed on camera. To be a pundit, the laws are the same. Emma Hayes and Sarina Wiegman can both read the game, are you saying they can’t offer an insight?
“Sounds like to me that Joey has a problem with particular pundits who haven’t done enough in the game, but how does he know? And how do we quantify that? There’s EFL players who are commentating, co-commentating on Champions League games. So what level – as far as Joey Barton is concerned – do you have to get before you can be an expert on the ‘men’s game’?”
