Thomas Tuchel has been fielding a depleted midfield in recent weeks.
N’Golo Kante is out injured, Mateo Kovacic has only just returned from a lay-off, and Conor Gallagher is struggling to find the form he showed on loan at Crystal Palace last season.
Chelsea tried to address the situation on deadline day after suffering their second Premier League defeat of the season away at Southampton.
And it was a Saints player who they tried to steal away from St Mary’s, but Tuchel’s men saw a £50million bid for Romeo Lavia rejected.

That was after, according to the Evening Standard, Ajax had told them that Mexican international Alvarez was not for sale despite Chelsea’s £40m bid.
He has made 108 appearances for the Eredivisie champions, scoring nine goals and assisting a further five.
And following the sale of Antony to Manchester United, Ajax insisted they would not get rid of Alvarez, leading Chelsea to search for alternatives.
When their bid for Lavia was then declined by Southampton, they opted to secure a loan deal for Juventus man Denis Zakaria instead.

Yet despite the arrival of Zakaria, new Chelsea owner Todd Boehly is still keen to strengthen further in the January window.
Dinamo Moscow’s attacking midfielder Arsen Zakharyan, 19, is one option being discussed.
And they are also working on making Zakaria’s move permanent, with the loan deal including an option to buy worth £26m.
Chelsea currently sit sixth in the Premier League table following three wins, one draw and two defeats from their opening six matches. More

Lewandowski, 34, joined Barca from Bayern Munich in a £42.5million transfer this summer after declaring his desire to quit the German champions.
He put pen to paper on a deal at the Nou Camp until 2026.
And now the finer details of the paperwork have been revealed by Cadena SER Catuluna.
Incredibly, the Poland star will get paid a net £8.6m in the current 2022-23 season – which works out as £165,000 per week after tax.

This will jump to £11.2m (£215,000 per week) next term and then £13.8m (£265,000 per week) in 2024-25 before dropping back to £11.2m in the final year, by which time he will be nearly 38.
Any club wanting to buy Lewandowski during the course of this deal would need to trigger his £430m release clause.
However, Barca have the option to terminate his contract early under special circumstances.
If Lewandowski plays less than 55 per cent of matches in the 2024-25 season, the club will be able to rip up his deal and release him.

There are also a series of bonuses in the contract including up to an extra £500,000 should he win LaLiga during his spell in Spain and £1.72m if he secures a league, Copa del Rey and Champions League treble.
However, there are no bonuses for only winning the Copa del Rey.
Lewandowski is the main striker in Xavi’s squad, especially after Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s £12m transfer to Chelsea on deadline day.
And he has made a lightning start to life at the Nou Camp.
Lewandowski failed to score against Rayo Vallecano on the opening day but then struck doubles against Real Sociedad and Real Valladolid plus another goal against Sevilla to take his tally to five in four matches. More

Rudiger’s agent confirms Premier League club offered defender DOUBLE Real Madrid’s transfer offer for ex-Chelsea star

Saif Rubie, the intermediary for a number of players including the German clashed with Simon Jordan on talkSPORT.
The ex-Chelsea man left Stamford Bridge on a free transfer after failing to agree a new deal.
Rubie revealed: “Let me confirm this, live on air, the Real Madrid deal was the smallest deal on offer.
“There was a club in England offering almost double the amount and a club in Europe doubling the amount.”
Manchester United had been linked with him.

Reports emerged that Rudiger was going to receive £10million in signing on fee.
Rubie took exception to these claims saying: “He [Jordan] said that Rudiger was being very greedy because he was getting paid a £10m signing on fee.
“And his advisors were getting £10m to go wherever they were going.
“Let’s break it down. A £10m signing on fee is usually broken across the period of the contract, that’s four years, that’s £40,000-a-week.

“Let’s say it is £10m to £15m, the transfer window has just finished.
“Antonio Rudiger has been one of the best, if not the best, defender in the world and Premier League.
“It made Carlo Ancelotti want to bring him to Real Madrid. What is the value of a top flight, top level centre half in the game?”
Rubie also admitted Chelsea’s old owners didn’t offer him a fair salary.
He said: “What if I told you Chelsea, and the old regime, basically made next to no effort to keep the player.
“At the time he was very happy to stay and potentially be the captain of the club. He was offered a contract that was half the amount Romelu Lukaku were earning.” More

Speaking during a post-match interview with Match TV, Zakharyan said: “I knew they were interested, maybe in the winter.”

And a dip in form has seen Arthur play for Brazil just once since 2020.
Liverpool are paying Juventus almost £4m to loan the midfielder for the season.
And should Arthur come good, there is an option to sign him permanently for just over £32m next summer.

How Nice can line up this season with SEVEN ex-Premier League stars after free transfer for former Chelsea ace Barkley

NICE could field a whopping SEVEN former Premier League players on their starting XI this season. That is after Ross Barkley arrived on a free transfer following his release by Chelsea in the summer.

The former England man was unveiled to fans ahead of Sunday’s defeat against Monaco – after checking himself out in the mirror in a cringe-worthy announcement video.
Barkley followed Aaron Ramsey in joining the South France side as a free agent this summer.
The Welshman, 31, made his switch earlier this summer after he agreed to terminate his Juventus contract.
He was swiftly followed to the Allianz Riviera Stadium by Leicester stalwart Kasper Schmeichel.

Nice then added Arsenal’s £72million flop Nicolas Pepe on a season-long loan.
And Fulham left-back Joe Bryan also headed to Nice on loan.
The Ligue 1 side were linked with an ambitious move for Edinson Cavani.
The Uruguayan, 35, had been a free agent since leaving Manchester United at the end of last season but instead signed for Valencia.

But it is possible Nice manager Lucien Favre could still line up with seven former Prem players in his team this season.
That is because former Southampton midfielders Mario Lemina and Morgan Schneiderlin also play for Nice.
Fans may be familiar with defender Dante, who spent three years at Bayern Munich earlier in his career.
While he has partnered ex-Barcelona defender Jean-Clair Todibo so far this season.
Nice’s team is brimming with young French talent, with Under-21 internationals Khephren Thuram, Amine Gouiri and Melvin Bard all players to watch.
Algerian right-back Youcef Atal appears to be the first-choice on that flank while Andy Delort and Gaetan Laborde will battle it out up front after the latter was snapped up from Rennes.

Man Utd overpaid by more than £100m on new transfers while City saved £90m… find out how savvy your club is

MANCHESTER UNITED overpaid by more than £100million on new transfers – more than any other Premier League side.It is a complete contrast to last summer when the Red Devils were the most savvy operators, saving nearly £60m on their new signings.

But this time around it is rivals Manchester City who have been most shrewd, saving just over £90m despite big buys including Erling Haaland and Kalvin Phillips.
Haaland, who has scored 10 goals in six Prem games, is already proving to be one of the best signings of the summer.
And given he has a value of £135m but cost City just £51m, he is also one of the biggest bargains.
By contrast, United overpaid by £54m on Antony alone, since the winger has a value of just £31.5m on Transfermarkt yet arrived for £85.5m.

According to OLBG using data collected from Transfermarkt, United’s total overspend was an eye-watering £102,620,00, with Casemiro and Lisandro Martinez also arriving for fees beyond their value.
Ajax proved tough negotiators and managed to wrangle £55m out of United for Martinez, whose true value is closer to £29m, while United overspent by £34m on Casemiro.
That spend dwarfs Chelsea as the next highest on £69,740,000, and West Ham who are third after ovepaying by £39,610,000.
The Blues splashed £62m on Marc Cucurella from Brighton but it is claimed the defender is only worth £25m, while Carney Chukwuemeka was also signed for £15m more than he is worth.

Kepa, 27, remains the most expensive gloveman in history after joining Chelsea for £71.6million from Athletic Bilbao in 2018.
But despite being No1 at Stamford Bridge in his first two seasons, Kepa has spent the past 24 months playing second fiddle to Edouard Mendy.
Reports claimed the 11-time Spain international was giving serious thought to moving on this summer.
And Napoli made an approach over a loan deal with an option to buy next year.

Kepa received several options for a fresh start away from Stamford Bridge.
But after giving careful thought to all proposals, he eventually decided he was best served staying at Chelsea.
Tuchel declared: “He tried and checked his options, which we were aware of.
“They were not satisfying for him or for us, so he stayed and I’m very happy about that.
