James Maddison told sealing Newcastle transfer would be ‘step forward’ in his career from Leicester

JAMES MADDISON should get in the car and drive to Newcastle to take a “step forward” in his career, according to Danny Mills. The Leicester playmaker, 25, is the subject of a hot pursuit from the Magpies as Eddie Howe desperately tries to add attacking reinforcements before the transfer window closes.

And former England defender Mills encouraged Maddison to pack up and make the move to the north-east because of the project at St James’ Park.
He told talkSPORT: “It’s a step forward. You’ve got to look at where the two clubs are going.
“If you’re going to go off where they finished last year, OK, that’s the only argument that you have.
“But Newcastle is a club on an upward trajectory.”

Mills continued: “Leicester, at the moment, are on a downward trajectory.
“They’re about to lose Kasper Schmeichel, they’re losing players left right and centre, they still haven’t bought a player in. Youri Tielemans could go as well.
“So, Leicester at the moment look like a club heading down. Their recruitment has been non-existent.
“Newcastle, with everything they’re putting in place, building for the future – it’d be a great move from Maddison.

“It’s the sort of player Newcastle fans would love, bit of creativity in midfield.
“If I was him I’d get myself on that A1 and start driving.”
Newcastle were bought by a Saudi-led consortium for £300million last year, making them the richest club in world football.
They finished last season strongly, although finished three places below Leicester, and have bolstered defensively with Nick Pope and Sven Botman joining Matt Targett as summer signings.
However, Newcastle have not won the top flight since 1927 nor a domestic trophy since the FA Cup in 1955.
Danny Mills reckons the Newcastle project is an appealing prospectCredit: Richard Pelham / The Sun
By contrast, Maddison won the FA Cup under Brendan Rodgers last year while the 5,000-1 Foxes famously won the Premier League in 2016 – but are yet to sign anyone this season as they are hamstrung financially.
Newcastle submitted their initial £40m bid last Friday but it was immediately rejected by Leicester, who hope to tie their star midfielder down to a new contract.
However, the Toon went back in with a second offer of just over £45m.
That was still well below Leicester’s valuation of around £60m for the former Norwich star, who is tied down at the King Power until 2024.
Rodgers said of the £40m offer: “It’s not for me to put valuations on the players, it’s not my side.
“But that might just cover three-quarters of his left leg, that price. He’s a top player.
“He’s still very much a player here.

“Naturally the players are sought after because they are talents.

Journalist Fabrizio Romano claims that a medical is scheduled for the player in Paris and that personal terms have been agreed.
PSG were desperate to sign Sanches, 24, as he worked under new manager Christophe Galtier and director of football Luis Campos at Lille.
During his time at the club they won the Ligue 1 title in the 2020/21 season.
He played 90 times for Lille across the three seasons he spent there scoring six goals having made the move from Bayern Munich.

The likes of AC Milan and Arsenal were also interested in Sanches but the chance to stay in France and team-up with Galtier again was too tempting.
Sanches’ move to a club with ambitions of winning the Champions League shows a great turn around in his career as at one stage he was deemed a failure after spells at Bayern and Swansea didn’t go well.
Him joining the Parisians could trigger a mass exodus of midfielders as the new gaffer looks to re-build the squad this summer following the dismissal of predecessor Mauricio Pochettino.
Players such as Idrissa Gana Gueye, Georgino Wijnaldum and Julian Draxler could all leave PSG.

However, Leicester officials have made it clear that they will only consider a sale if an offer of at least £85million is tabled.
Thomas Tuchel and Todd Boehly are said to be reluctant to match the eyewatering fee, but the duo have considered offering Ruben Loftus-Cheek as part of a deal.
If the two clubs were to reach an agreement, it would see Fofana earn a huge pay-rise.
According to The Daily Mail, the Frenchman’s wages could increase dramatically to £200,000 if he decided to join The Blues.

Arsenal will look to axe EIGHT flops including record transfer Nicolas Pepe to help fund Mikel Arteta’s summer spree

THERE is positivity in the air ahead of the new season, that’s for sure. The exciting new additions and an instant chemistry between Gabriel Jesus and his team-mates has got Arsenal fans relishing the curtain-raiser.

Hector Bellerin could leave if Real Betis stump up the cashCredit: Getty
But there is also some concern at the number of players not part of Mikel Arteta’s plans still at the club.
And some of those who are surplus to requirements will need to be shipped out before further additions come in.
Frustratingly, to myself and many other Gunners fans, these individuals were taken on the pre-season tour, which deprived us of the chance to see more Hale Enders impress.
So, who are the misfits Arsenal should shift before the transfer window closes to fund and make room for the desired central midfielder and another winger?

    Nicolas Pepe
The Ivorian has been a constant frustration to Arteta and he is certainly one who has been given chances to adapt to the way his coach wants him to play.
Pepe has amazing skills and an eye for goal, but his link play, work rate and speed of thought are simply not in tune with the rest of theteam.
His plus points are far outweighed by his minuses, and as revealed by SunSport, the club will have to sell him at a huge loss, if they can find a buyer.
His wages may well prove a sticking point and I can see a loanwith Arsenal having to fund some of his exorbitant salary, sadly.

    Hector Bellerin
I think most fans see Bellerin as one of our own. His length of service, loyalty and inherited cockney twang will see him leave with all our blessing but leave he must.
The current right-back we have on our books is not the same one who lifted three FA Cups because he lost the devastating turn of pace which made him the player he was at his fabulous best.
I hope Betis can raise the funds to buy him after his successful loan there in 2021-22.

    Pablo Mari
Arteta has to take this one on the chin as the Spaniard wanted his compatriot.
The manager obviously wanted a left-footed centre-back but Gabriel is far superior to Mari.
Mari is good enough in the air and his distribution more than adequate, but his lack of pace has been consistently exposed in the Premier League.
The Spaniard seems far more suited to Serie A where he spent last season with Udinese.
    Ainsley Maitland-Niles
The irony of his manager now buying versatility players on purpose, when the popular Englishman seemed to be a victim of that attribute, will not be lost on AMN.
Neither loan at West Brom or Roma have led to anything and a team that buys him will first have to promise him a midfield role I suspect.
The arrival of Albert Sambi Lokonga and the contract renewal of Mohamed Elneny will severely limit game time for this frustrated player.
But as a homegrown player with undoubted ability, I hope a mid-table Premier League side might bid for him.
    Lucas Torreira
After two successful loans in Spain and Italy, it is surprising to me that the tenacious midfielder has so few suitors.
There seems no way back for him under Arteta, who I sense sees the Uruguayan as simply not physical enough for the anchor role and also mistrusts his passing accuracy.
The player and his agent are both on record saying the player never truly settled in London so I hope we can get a reasonable bid for this popular squad member.

Mikel Arteta still wants to bring in more new recruits this summerCredit: Splash
    Reiss Nelson
Nelson has never truly kicked on despite his obvious talent and flair – another one Arteta has never truly trusted.
I am sure that once the winger finds a home where he is loved and played consistently his career will reignite… but it will not be at Arsenal.
The club will have watched him last season in the Dutch top-flight and had they been impressed they would not have purchased Marquinhos and bid for Raphinha.
    Alex Runarsson
With the arrival of Matt Turner and the rise of Arthur Okonkwo, Arsenal need to simply rip up the Icelandic keeper’s contract and put it down as a reckless risk that failed to pay off.
    Matt Smith
Despite having more medals than Harry Kane, it is time for this talented midfielder to be sold so he can flourish.

Smith is 22 soon and he deserves to be playing regularly.
He was virtually ever-present for Doncaster last season in League One, but I would hope a Championship side will gamble on him. More
