How savvy Arsenal made £101m flogging deadwood but still have highest net transfer spend in bid to crack top-four

SAVVY Arsenal have managed to save themselves a whopping £101million in the last two years by flogging a number of deadwood players. One of Mikel Arteta’s biggest jobs when he took charge in December 2019 was reducing the wage bill after inheriting an over-paid side.

And slowly but surely the Spaniard has managed to save the Gunners a hefty sum of cash.
According to football business Twitter account Swiss Ramble, Arsenal are £101m better off since the summer of 2021.
This has been due to selling the likes of Joe Willock for £25m to Newcastle last year in what was their only major cash sale.
Though the likes of Lucas Torreira and Ainsley Maitland-Niles were shipped out on loan to Fiorentina and Roma respectively where they received almost £2m in loan fees as well as having their wages covered.

Meanwhile David Luiz and Willian were released to save a combined £290,000-a-week in wages, with Sead Kolasinac and Calum Chambers allowed to join Marseille and Aston Villa on free transfers in January.
And Arsenal paid former skipper Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang £7m as they ripped up his contract to allow him to link up with Barcelona on a free earlier this year.
It has been claimed that Arsenal have saved an incredible £16.1m in wages after the first year from releasing the 33-year-old.
Moving onto this summer, Matteo Guendouzi was sold to Marseille for £9m, Torreira signed for Galatasaray in a £5m transfer and Bernd Leno joined Fulham in a deal rising to £8m.

Defenders Konstantinos Mavropanos and Daniel Ballard also departed on permanent deals to Stuttgart and Sunderland respectively for a combined £5m.
In total, Swiss Ramble have stated estimated annual savings have come to £101m, with £62m saved in wages and £39m from player amortisation.
But while Arsenal have saved a pretty penny, they have also splashed the cash with no Premier League side boasting a higher net spend in the last two seasons than them.
Their net spend is a staggering £218m – £1m higher than London rivals Chelsea – though the Blues could overtake the Gunners before the transfer window slams shut on September 1.
Big money signings include Ben White [£50m], Gabriel Jesus [£45m], Oleksandr Zinchenko [£32m], Fabio Vieira [£34m] and Martin Odegaard [£30m].

Their transfer activity has been a huge gamble for Arteta and technical director Edu as they look to bring Arsenal back to the Champions League for the first time since 2017.

Brendan Rodgers’ side’s 2-1 defeat to Southampton on Saturday further highlighted his team’s need for new signings.
They’ve only brought in one player this summer so far, and need cash to rejuvenate their depleted squad.

How Casemiro will fit in to Man Utd XI with ex-Real Madrid star unleashing Fred and finally getting best out of him

JUST a few days ago there seemed little chance of Casemiro leaving Real Madrid.  Why would he want to rock the boat just a few months before the Qatar World Cup?

Manchester United’s Fred could benefit from the arrival of his Brazilian teammateCredit: AP
In an ideal universe, the offer from Old Trafford would have come in the January transfer window but that is not the way that things have worked out.
The horror show against Brentford has highlighted the urgency of Manchester United’s needs.
True, the long-term aim of Erik ten Hag may well be a dynamic, high pressing side – a model of play for which Casemiro is not a natural fit.
But the short term necessity is to balance out the side – a need which may extend into the next couple of seasons as United rebuild.

Brazil coach Tite refers to Casemiro as his “competitive leader.” And it is certainly that type of temperament that United could do with at the moment.
The 30-year-old midfielder is not the quickest or the most mobile.
However, he has excellent awareness of what is going on around him allowing him to plug defensive gaps while also transferring the ball quickly and efficiently to the front players.
A fascinating aspect of Casemiro’s move to Old Trafford is the effect this could have on his Brazil midfield partner Fred.

He is much maligned by the Premier League pundits and it is unfortunate that they do not see more of him for Brazil.
He is coming under pressure for his place from Bruno Guimaraes of Newcastle, but for the time being Fred is first choice on merit after a sequence of good displays.
It is striking how much more freedom he enjoys when he wears the yellow shirt.
Fred, 29, is able to use his lung power to link up with the strikers, and even run beyond them.
Brazil’s coaching staff have a healthy admiration for him, as the type of unselfish player who makes those around him look better.
They also suspect that he can be too nice for his own good and has reigned in too much of his natural box-to-box game for Man Utd because he has been asked to do so.

The balance of Fred’s game could be about to change. There is no doubt now about who is going to do the holding midfielder.
Casemiro will sit in front of the back four, probably not too far away from the centre-backs. Once he has bedded in, the division of responsibilities will be much clearer. Casemiro holds, Fred can run on.
The ideal midfield trio of functions has one to get the ball, one to give it and one to go. In this case they win possession collectively, Casemiro gives the forward pass and Fred makes the forward burst.
The news of Casemiro heading to Manchester United has come as a huge surprise. Nowhere will that news have been greeted more warmly than in the house of United’s No.17 Fred.

And he claims the Red Devils can wrap up the Gakpo deal by Wednesday if they can cough up the outstanding millions.
