      Tottenham’s Bryan Gil posts cryptic pic about ‘being happy but not realising’ after Valencia transfer collapses

      And following the collapse of the move, Gil made a cryptic post on his Instagram page.
      He posted an image with the caption: “Sometimes an old photo makes us value the moments where we were happiest and we didn’t realise.”
      Gil has not played a single minute under Antonio Conte this season.
      It is clear to see he is far down the pecking order in terms of attackers at Tottenham, with the signing of Richarlison pushing him further down the order.

      The 21-year-old played just 85 minutes of Premier League football under both Nuno Espirito Santo and Conte before the latter sanctioned a loan move to Valencia for the winger.
      Tottenham brought Gil for a fee of £22million plus Erik Lamela from Sevilla, with Gil at the time being one of La Liga’s rising stars.
      However, things have not worked out for him across the English channel and his move to England is threatening to turn sour.
      Tottenham had been in line to secure a loan deal for Dan James before he sealed a season long-loan with Fulham.

      Premier League clubs smash £1BILLION net spend barrier for first time in transfer window as Chelsea splash most cash

      PREMIER LEAGUE clubs’ net spending broke the £1billion barrier for the first time this transfer window.But League chiefs believe the rise in revenues across the board means spending is NOT out of control.

      The total amount spent by Prem clubs in the summer window was a staggering £1.92bn and 34 per cent more than the previous record of £1.4bn, set in the summer of 2017.
      With the 20 top flight clubs recouping £850million in sales, it meant a net spend of £1.07bn, the first time the billion pound mark has been crossed, dwarfing the £665m net spend of 2017.
      Top-flight chiefs, though, believe the stunning spending is justified.
      The previous 2017 record equated to 30 per cent of the clubs’ total turnover that season.

      And even though this summer’s dealing went through the roof, it only represented 32 per cent of turnover.
      That is because of the rise in broadcast TV revenue, which will be worth more than £10bn over the next three seasons after a huge rise in overseas income.
      With gate income up with full houses back after the Covid-induced squeeze on clubs and a number of increased commercial deals, Premier League bosses are happy the spending was not disproportionate.
      There is also an acceptance that 2022 was the first summer after the pandemic.

      Added to that was the arrival of new owners at Chelsea, who contributed £255.3m – 13 per cent of the League’s total spend – and the first summer window for the new Saudi-led Newcastle board.
      Their £204m net spend, according to Transfermarkt, was marginally more than Manchester United’s while Brighton and Leicester made the biggest profits.
      And Nottingham Forest’s remarkable squad overhaul was also, at least in part, felt inevitable after so many of the promotion-winning players under Steve Cooper were on loan at the club or coming to the end of their contract.
      Football’s leading financial analysts, Deloitte, suggested the spending pattern was no surprise – but a sign of the Prem’s rude health.
      Lead partner Tim Bridge said: “The record level of spending during this transfer window is a clear indication of Premier League clubs’ confidence, as fans return to stadia and a new broadcast cycle begins.
      “It’s now become part and parcel of the Premier League that clubs are willing to pay significant sums to maximise performance.

      “This season, the desire to acquire playing talent has reached new levels as the pressure for clubs to stay in the competition is higher than ever before.”
      However, Bridge warned: “Recent years have demonstrated the risks of clubs sustaining high levels of spend while failing to get their financial house in order. 
      “Particularly in the current economic climate, as costs begin to rise, the importance of retaining financial stability off the pitch should be as much a focus for clubs as ensuring their success on it.”
      Around £150m of the spending went to Championship clubs, including Spurs’ £20m acquisition of Djed Spence from Middlesbrough – one of those on loan at Forest last term.
      Forest’s total spend of £126m was the highest by any promoted club in English history and only the third time a team joining the Prem had splashed out more than £100m.

      Bridge added: “The high spend of those clubs looking to secure their place in the Premier League is an indicator of the widening gap between the Premier League and the Championship. 
      “This shift is partly attributable to the financial impact of the pandemic, which was felt more harshly by Championship than Premier League clubs.”

      10. Willian
      THERE was a bit of a theme yesterday with Fulham in signing players who have previously played for their London rivals, but the arrival of a 34-year-old Willian is a bit of a head scratcher.
      Willian, who joins on a one-year deal, will add Premier League experience to the Cottagers ranks and no doubt maintains a wicked delivery on a set piece.
      However, the modern game requires lots of running, and Willian is unlikely to be able to provide that, meaning his impact will be felt mostly from the bench.
      9. Dan James
      ANOTHER signing from Fulham in this list, Dan James seemed to be one of the hottest properties on the market on deadline day with as many as three clubs vying for his services at one point.
      In the end, Fulham signed him on loan for the remainder of the season and will provide the exact opposite of Willian in terms of work-rate.
      However, James was benched at Leeds to the start the campaign and his lack of end-product has previously come under the microscope in his spells at Manchester United and Leeds.

      8. Wout Faes
      WOUT FAES became Leicester City’s first and only outfield signing of the summer transfer window on deadline day.
      The 24-year-old joins in a £15million deal from Reims as the Ligue 1 side’s Player of the Year for last season.
      Faes will have big boots to fill thanks to the departure of Wesley Fofana, and a massive job on his hands due to the perilous state Leicester find themselves in – winless from their first five games.

      7. Antony
      ANTONY’S transfer to Manchester United was the real blockbuster transfer on deadline day – an £85.5m deal from Ajax.
      The deal was practically done the day before, but the winger arrives with a lot of excitement surrounding him with some eye-catching displays of trickery at Ajax.
      However, over £85m on a player who has failed to outscore an 18-year-old Mason Mount – who had nine league goals with Vitesse in the 2017/18 season – screams of an over-payment regardless of the his other qualities.

      6. Arthur Melo
      FORMERLY a transfer target for Arsenal and an ex-Barcelona player, Arthur Melo has joined Liverpool on loan for the season with an option to buy for £32m from Juventus.
      Arthur bolsters an area which has proven to be a source of weakness for Liverpool this season amid a crippling injury crisis.
      However, he had not played a single minute for Juventus this season prior to the move and there will undoubtedly be question marks over whether he can handle the physical demands of the Premier League and Jurgen Klopp’s system.

      5. Duje Caleta-Car
      A direct replacement for Aston Villa bound Jan Bednarek, Duje Caleta-Car comes in with a big reputation from his time on the continent.
      The Croatian was William Saliba’s partner at Marseille for the majority of last season, and their keystone defensive partnership saw them reach the semi-finals of the Europa Conference League and come second on Ligue 1.
      The fee for the 25-year-old is reportedly £12m-£15m, but his ability to play out from the back will give an extra dimension to Southampton’s already impressive centre-back unit.

      4. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang
      THE £10m signing of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang by Chelsea from Barcelona offers an interesting solution to the club’s recent struggles in front of goal.
      The Gabon forward thrived under Thomas Tuchel during their time at Borussia Dortmund, and if he can replicate this he will be an instant hit at Stamford Bridge.

      A transfer Manchester United fans are bitterly disappointed about.
      James Garner was one of the heroes from Nottingham Forest’s promotion campaign last season, and the United faithful were hoping to see more of their academy product under Erik ten Hag this season.
      However, he hasn’t played a single minute and United consequently allowed him to leave, with The Toffees snapping him up for just £15m and seeing the 21-year-old pen a four-year deal.

      2. Manuel Akanji
      A signing which went massively under the radar for most, Manuel Akanji joined Manchester City for just £15m early on deadline day.
      The centre-back comes in with Champions League pedigree from his time at Borussia Dortmund, and is an strong ball-playing defender.
      Pep Guardiola experimented with an interesting 3-2-3-2 in the second half against Newcastle in order to salvage a draw against The Magpies, so the signing of Akanji could hint at another tactical evolution for City under Guardiola.

      1. Billy Gilmour
      The £9m acquisition of Billy Gilmour from Chelsea by Brighton could turn out to the coup of the summer.
      Brighton had been scouring the market looking for a player to replace Yves Bissouma before finally landing on Gilmour, who could now re-ignite his stuttering career under Graham Potter.
      Potter has had success with other Chelsea products, namely Tariq Lamptey who when fit is often among the most dangerous wing-backs in the division, and if similar magic can be worked on Gilmour he could soon command a huge transfer fee.

      Manchester United explored the possibility of signing him when a deal for Ajax attacker Antony proved difficult, although they eventually got it over the line, and now the star has admitted he thought he was set for Old Trafford.
      The Dutchman said: “At the beginning of the window United had reported ‘very calmly’. We were waiting for that.
      “It was getting closer and the signals were getting more positive.
      “Then you think: it might fall that way. But eventually that option faded a bit, actually only last week.”

      Southampton were also keen on the ace and rumours had suggested they agreed a £34million fee with the Dutch club.
      Leeds chief Victor Orta then travelled to Holland to try to negotiate the transfer but Gakpo has turned them down after he allegedly refused to board a plane to England to finalise the transfer to Elland Road yesterday.
      After deciding to stay at PSV, Gakpo explained: “I’m glad it’s over. For me it was the first window where it was stay or go.
      “In the last week it was looking at what was the right thing to do. I feel at home here, in my own city. Everyone knows how I feel here. But of course there are other things at play and I think you should have all the options. I did that too.

      After admitting he had held talks with several Premier League clubs, he said: “There are more factors at play. The World Cup also played a role.
      “I spoke to the national coach. I called him and asked for advice. The advice was clear: that I had to follow my gut feeling, but that a transfer before the World Cup is not really ideal for the player, because then you have to get used to something. I agreed with him.
      “It was all last minute for me, because until last week I thought I was going to Manchester.
      “Then it was choose another club and decide whether I wanted to go there. That is not nice for PSV and also not for me, because it felt rushed.”
      The seven-time capped Netherlands ace has been in incredible form this season.
      In just nine matches he has netted seven goals and six assists.

      Another deal that seemed to take an age to get over the line was Wesley Fofana’s switch to Chelsea.
      The Leicester defender went on strike, refused to train and then took a cheeky swipe at Brendan Rodgers after completing his “dream” move to Stamford Bridge.
      The £70m is the initial fee – as with the rest in this list – making him the third most-expensive defender ever after Harry Maguire and Virgil van Dijk but it could rise to £75m in achievable add-ons.

      Aurelien Tchouameni’s move from Monaco to Real Madrid seems like it was done a lifetime ago, such was the frantic nature of the closing stages of the window.
      The European champions identified their target and got the France international in early to integrate him in the squad, where he is hitting the ground running alongside compatriot Eduardo Camavinga.

      4. DARWIN NUNEZ – Benfica to Liverpool – £64m 
      Liverpool were one of several clubs to splash the cash on a new No9 this summer and landed Darwin Nunez from Benfica despite interest from Manchester United.
      He made an immediate impact with goals in the Community Shield and then at Fulham on the opening day before shockingly headbutting Joachim Andersen to earn a three-match suspension.

      5. CASEMIRO – Real Madrid to Man Utd – £60m 
      With a deal for Frenkie de Jong failing, Ten Hag knew he needed to bring in another midfielder and made a sudden swoop for the experienced Brazilian midfielder Casemiro.
      The five-time Champions League winner could cost up to £70m and is being paid a staggering £350,000 per week for an initial four years – a huge investment for a 30-year-old who has never played in England.
      Tchouameni’s arrival meant Casemiro was not even a guaranteed starter under Carlo Ancelotti anyway – and the fee essentially covered the cost of the new signing.

      6. ALEXANDER ISAK – Real Sociedad to Newcastle – £60m
      Eddie Howe was determined to add a striker to his Toon squad – and he certainly did that by landing Alexander Isak from Real Sociedad.
      The Sweden international smashed the club record with his £60m move and wasted no time getting to grips with the Premier League by blasting in 38 minutes into his debut at Liverpool.

      7. MATTHIJS DE LIGT – Juventus to Bayern Munich – £57m
      Matthijs de Ligt was dubbed one of the next generation of elite centre-backs but it did not quite work out for him at Juventus as hoped.
      Bayern Munich were not put off, though, and splashed out big money on the Dutch defender who will likely form a solid partnership with Dayot Upamecano for many years.

      Despite having £50m Ben Chilwell who plays in the same position, Chelsea decided to spend an initial £55m on Marc Cucurella from Brighton.
      The Spanish left wing-back, who can also play in a back three, was also a target for Manchester City but they refused to pay what the Seagulls demanded.
      Among the other new arrivals at Stamford Bridge this summer were Raheem Sterling (£47.5m), Kalidou Koulibaly (£35m) and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (£12m) on deadline day.

      9. ERLING HAALAND – Borussia Dortmund to Man City – £51m
      He may have cost £51m but Erling Haaland is already looking like an absolute bargain with nine goals – including two hat-tricks – in his first five Premier League games.
      City, who Haaland’s dad also played for, won the race for the Norwegian’s signature ahead of some of Europe’s biggest teams after triggering his low release clause at Dortmund.

      10. RICHARLISON – Everton to Tottenham – £50m 
      Completing the top ten – eight of which are Premier League signings – is the £50m move Richarlison made from Goodison Park to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
      The deal could rise by a further £10m for the Brazil star who has more keepy-uppies than goals and assists combined so far under Antonio Conte after riling Nottingham Forest players and supporters with his cheeky showboating.

      Chelsea ‘failed with last-minute £39m bid to land Ibrahim Sangare in transfer from PSV Eindhoven on deadline day’

      CHELSEA’S hectic summer of transfers lasted right up until the last moments of the window.Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Denis Zakaria were both announced last night, and the Blues are also claimed to have failed in a late approach for PSV Eindhoven star Ibrahim Sangare.

      Chelsea contacted the Dutch club this week about potentially signing the midfielder, according to to Eindhovens Dagblad.
      The Blues were claimed to have been willing to pay £39million to sign the 24-year-old.
      But PSV rejected the approach as the Dutch transfer window closed the day before the UK deadline and they could not replace the Ivory Coast international.
      Had Chelsea expressed their desire to sign Sangare earlier, the Blues could have got themselves a cheaper deal.

      Sangare had a reported £32m release clause, but signed a new five-year contract in August that removed the clause.
      The midfielder has also been the subject of reported interest from Manchester United and Leicester in recent months.
      In the end Chelsea signed Zakaria from Juventus on a one-year loan deal to provide cover in the middle of the park.
      The Blues have the option to sign the 25-year-old for £30million next summer.

      But despite Todd Boehly splashing the cash in his first window as owner, signing a midfielder proved difficult.
      As well as Sangare, Chelsea also failed to sign Edson Alvarez from Ajax in a £43m move.
      The Dutch champions blocked his exit – despite Alvarez going on strike to try and force through a transfer.
      And elsewhere British sanctions meant a deadline day swoop for Russian midfielder Arsen Zakharyan fell through.
      A £12.6m deal with Dynamo Moscow had been agreed but fell through due to the sanctions the UK has placed on Russia amid the war in Ukraine. More

      A statement on Everton’s website confirmed the deal.
      They said: “Everton midfielder André Gomes has joined LOSC Lille on loan for the remainder of the 2022/23 campaign.
      “The 29-year-old, who made a permanent move to Goodison Park in the summer of 2019 having impressed during a season-long loan from Barcelona in 2018/19, joins the Ligue 1 outfit after making 100 First-Team appearances for the Blues.

      “Portugal international Gomes, who was part of his nation’s European Championship win in 2016, has previously won league titles in his homeland and Spain.”
      In his 100 appearances for Everton, Gomes registered two goals and seven assists.
      Last season the 29-year-old played 14 times in the Premier League, with most of these coming either from the bench or when the squad suffered a shortage.
      Everton were also bolstered in midfield earlier in the window when they brought in Amodou Onana for £32.4million.

      The Seagulls have been on the hunt for a midfielder following the departure of Yves Bissouma to Tottenham earlier this summer.
      Gilmour made a stunning start to his Chelsea career under Frank Lampard but fell out of favour under Thomas Tuchel and endured a difficult loan with Norwich City last season.
      The ace has only appeared 11 times in the Premier League for the West London club but continues to be a regular for his country.
      He was included in the Blues’ party for their pre-season tour to the USA but was then among a group of players that were allowed to leave and link-up with their development squad part way through.

      The midfielder was initially left without a squad number at the start of the season.
