The Premier League club confirmed the deal at 5pm on Christmas Day – announcing their newest addition as “one more gift under the tree”.
Cunha – who will wear the No12 – flew to the UK earlier this week to complete his medical and the paperwork.
He will link up with Lopetegui and his new team-mates on January 1 with an initial loan deal from the Wanda Metropolitano.
However, the deal will automatically be made permanent until 2027 should certain clauses be met.

It means the forward could make his Wolves debut on January 4 away at Aston Villa in a crunch West Midlands derby or against Liverpool in the FA Cup three days later.
The transfer news comes as a Christmas blow to the likes of Arsenal, Everton and Leeds who were all keen to sign Cunha.
But it is the Premier League’s bottom side who won the race as they added extra firepower to their faltering attack that has scored just eight goals this season.
Cunha was born in Brazil and progressed through the youth ranks at Coritiba before earning his European break with Swiss side Sion.

After just one season, ten goals and eight assists in 32 games, he joined RB Leipzig in 2018.
There he gained Champions League experience and was even nominated for the Puskas award but 18 months later moved to Bundesliga rivals Hertha Berlin.
The attacker helped Brazil win the Tokyo 2020 Olympics gold medal last year and also sealed a switch to Atletico Madrid.
Despite seven goals in 37 appearances last term, he has played a bit-part role under Diego Simeone this season.
Cunha has featured 17 times in 2022-23, usually coming off the bench, and registered two assists but is yet to score.
On the international stage, the new Wolves signing is Brazil Under-23s’ record goalscorer with 21 goals in just 23 caps.
And he has now added eight senior appearances but was heartbroken to miss out on the recent World Cup squad.

Felix has scored 33 goals and laid on 18 assists in 129 appearances since making the switch from Benfica.
Earlier this month, Atletico chief Gil Marin admitted that the forward was likely to leave in the coming months.
He said: “The reasonable thing is to think that he is leaving, although I would love him to continue.
“But that is not the player’s idea. He is the biggest bet the club has made.
“I think he has the highest level in the world, but because of his relationship with the coach, the minutes played, his motivation… the reasonable thing to do is to consider his departure if an offer comes in.”
Felix played well at the World Cup in Qatar, scoring against Ghana and laying on two assists against Switzerland.
Speaking about his player’s form, Atletico manager Simeone said: “I want Atletico to win, that’s my sole focus.
“Then what has to happen will happen. No one is indispensable and things will be as they have to be.
“He had a good World Cup, he participated in goals. Hopefully we can have the Joao of the World Cup… I hope we can give him the peace of mind and joy to show what he demonstrated in the World Cup, which was very good.”

Liverpool were big admirers of the 21-year-old Fernandez before his stellar Qatar 2022 displays.
But his performances in the Middle East have now convinced United boss Erik ten Hag that he is the right man needed to bolster his own side.
As reported earlier this week, both teams will have to shatter the Premier League’s  £100million record transfer fee to snap-up his services next month.
That is due to Benfica having no desire to sell him for any less than his mammoth £105m release clause.

Now  UOL Esporte are claiming that United are willing to meet that figure – putting them in front of their Anfield rivals in the transfer chase.
The publication’s journalist Bruno Andrade added that “talks are ongoing” between all parties involved.

And it reiterates that United will meet the huge £105m asking price in order to “avoid any competition” from elsewhere.
Fernandez only arrived at Benfica from River Plate last summer but his international captain Lionel Messi admitted that he is not surprised so many clubs are keen on the World Cup’s Young Player of the Tournament.
